Budget (including currency): $200 Country: Usa Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Blender, some games that my macbook air wont like, archtecture homework and renderings Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Upgrading from a macbook air 2015 for the Arab market (lol it has a mixed english and Arabic keyboard) After watching LTT videos for three days straight, I remembered this was in my basement, now I want to fire it up and see what it can do and what upgrades would bring it up to modern performance.

could a 3,1 mac pro be used to run a minecraft server?
thehardwarehacker posted a topic in PC Gaming
so, this is more asking if this idea would work on any sort of small to medium scale. i have a 3,1 mac pro tower, with 8 cores, and currently 16GB of ram, all other part are base for rite now. if i want to set this up as a minecraft server for when some of my nephews come over (about 3-6 of them), and have them connect to it with laptops running the minecraft client, would that work at all? -
hello, i acquired a 2008 3,1 mac pro late last year, and i decided that i wanted to do i few upgrades to it to make it 'work flow friendly'. so, ive done processor upgrade (from 4 to 8), now i aim to do a graphics card upgrade, only thing is theres alot of loose info floating around on what does, and doesn't work. i am looking for a graphics, thats ether top of the line, or close to for the model, and that absolutely works, with no tinkering, with the 3,1. is there any definitive answer for this?

I recently built a PC with the intention of using it as a small office server for transfering files and accesing data remotely. Specs: Core i5 7500 H270 MoBo 32 GB RAM 2x 1 TB HDD's in RAID 1 1x 128 GB SSD for the OS and cacheing The question is whether I'll have any trouble or unexpected issues using Windows Server 2008, since the software and network guy only has licenses for Win Server 2008 and he's the one who is gonna set up the whole deal.

While watching videos about some budget gaming pc it made me want to get one, so while browsing Facebook marketplace I came across a 25$ Antec 1200 case with the fan. So here's my question, as I'm buying a case from 2008 and not financially available to get some new parts, I was wondering what are the best parts for the computer in the 2008-2010 budget range. I already have a monitor, keyboard,mouse, and hdd with windows 8(which I can soon upgrade to a sdd hopefully. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong place. Thanks for helping

So, I recently salvaged four different CPU's, as my high school was getting rid of some older workstation desktops. I managed to scrounge up: Intel Pentium E5300 2.70 GHz Intel Pentium E5400 2.70 GHz Intel Core i5 2500 3.30 GHz Intel Core i5 660 3.33 GHz I kinda want to start a general CPU collection, but i'm not sure these are even worth the small amount of space they take up (especially the Pentiums). Should I use them as the beginnings of my collection or should I find something a bit cooler? PS - I only have a (presumably) working motherboard for the 2500. PPS - this is my first ever post on these forums so i hope i'm doing it right.

So it's a weird place to ask help for uni assignments but I'll give it a shot. I have to find and describe 3 authentication methods that are supported by windows server 2008.Pretty stupid question I know . Can someone point me to an article , or a post or at least hit something. I've been googling around and managed to find some things but not for server 2008. https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc995189.aspx found that but no idea if that is what I need.

This was my first fully built or, rebuilt computers by me, it was what got me into PC building. The story: This computer dates back (2005) MOH Alies Assault online and LAN party days, when it was built, it had the following spec list: CPU: Intel Pentium 4 HT 650 3.40Ghz Mobo: ABIT FATAL1TY AA8XE (You can click me to get a picture of me, I'm actually pretty cool for my age) RAM: 2GB DDR2 GPU: Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT Silentpipe II 256MB I then traded in my laptop (2012), which was superior to this, for this computer that belonged to my dad, bought from my uncle, and then I began upgrading it since it was a bluescreening mess, was overheating, drives failing, awful awful and sick to it's knees. After many, many hours of searching online for used parts, doing myself a little bit of traveling, I came up with this: This is Viper Nemexis, Power Tower - IV (coming from the names I've given my computers, we're all 13 at some point of our lives.) CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Extreme QX 6700 3.45Ghz OC 1.376V (upgraded from a E2160 at 3Ghz OC) RAM: 4x1GB Hynx DDR2 533Mhz OC 667Mhz (4GB of RAM) Mobo: Gigabyte EP41-UD3L FSB 1333Mhz FSB GPU: Gigabyte GeForce 9600GT 1GB GDDR3 750Mhz/1950Mhz PSU: Trust 520W (idfk) Case: MGE Viper Blue Mid Tower Cooler: Arctic Cooling Pro Freezer 7 with screw mod (intel push pin mount sucks) HDD: Maxtor Diamond Max 21 500GB (OS) HDD2: Maxtor Diamond Max 11 160GB HDD3: WD Raptor 360 36GB 10K RPM HDD4: Hitachi 250GB 5.4K RPM Total build cost: 210€ Here is the video of some pan shots (bad but w/e) and some gaming performance test/pictures/whatever I can find: (CPU-Z // GPU Caps Viewer & 3DMARK Vantage scores at 8:05, skipping for those not interested in the gaming tests) What happened after this? I tried upgrading my GPU to an Asus GeForce GTX 560 Ti DCU II TOP, power supply couldn't handle it, sold it, got a GTX 750 Ti and it was running fine for a few more months, till I finally decided to upgrade again, to The Fox Project (build log coming soon). It served me well, unfortunately, it was disassembled and I gave away some of the parts, sold the C2QX, and my other uncle managed to screw the pins on the board so, RIP that board. Graphics card is still working somewhere, RAM was just spread around, PSU is in my room's part shelf and the 750 Ti was installed on The Fox Project. I don't expect much positive feedback from this because I know some elitists will look at my awful cabling and non 105+ uranium power supply with disgust, but I felt like sharing it anyway, we all deserve a chance for our first time. I miss it when it needed TLC after a blue screen because the processor was running too hot.. Damn, I wish I still had it today, it was my first ever somewhat enthusiastic build. Yes, I ran the thing overclocked 24/7, everything that had dials I wouldn't let go. Since it's one of my first times posting in the forum, I'd like to know if I can post my other two build logs in new threads? I hope that's okay? Is there a limit a day or..? Help pls If any mod has any complains, please do inform me, I am new, I am willing to correct my mistake, don't strike me pls ;_;

I have a HP ProLiant MicroServer running Windows Home Server 2008 R2 however when I start it up Windows attempts to repair the operating system. It fails and reboots the PC. I have a bootable USB with Home Server 2008 R2 on it. I know I can use this to repair the Operating System however I don't know how to go about doing this. Some additional information: The server contains 4 500GB drives, one is the boot drive and I believe the other ones are in a software raid. How can I repair this operating system? If I can't how can I read the data on these drives? If any more information is required please ask, thank you

Does anyone know of a good Windows server installation tutorial? I don't really want to mess with the OS until I know I atleast did the installation correct.

Hi guys, So I am managing a Windows 2008 Server (not R2). On it, I am sharing a folder. Under advanced sharing, the permissions are given to a specific group on the Domain Controller. On the Domain Controller, a user is in this group. However, this user does not have permission to view or edit this share. Even though they should. The only way they can connect to the share and view/edit it, is if the group Authenticated Users is added to the permissions of the Share. This, however, gives all users access to the share. For security reasons, this is bad. Obviously. I tried adding the user directly to the permissions list, which didn't allow them to view/edit the share either. I tried that because I have a similar (but not the same issue) where a different user is a part of a different group. And all users in that group have access to the share but except for that user. And the only way to give that user permissions is by directly adding them to the permissions list. Those are two different problems, but their root is the same. Sharing permissions isn't working right between the Shares and the Domain Controller. Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Vitalius

I recently started to experience frequent drops in connections with my internet. It all started after I changed my IP Addressing Scheme to 192.168.1.X /24 to 192.168.128.X/24. I also had to disable DHCP on my server because it wasn't working properly because it wasn't handing out IP Addresses (PFSense if handling that right now). I also put a media server up now cause I needed more room for my media. I was going to do my live stream sunday night but I kept getting disconnected. Keep in mind this problem started to happen AFTER I changed my IP Addressing Scheme. Any suggestions? and also my ping times keep spiking up past 100MS which is horrible for live streaming Update: Narrowed to my LAN. When I ping my router (The PFSense Box), the ping times are hitting pretty bad. over 100 ms i've been averaging.

Hi guys, Don't feel you need to answer all the questions. Any question you can help me with or advice you can give would be much appreciated. My workplace is planning on moving our employees over to Roaming Profiles at some point (where the profiles are on server and all computers on the network use the profiles there to log in, so it doesn't matter what PC you are on, you have all your things), and tbh we haven't dealt much with it. My supervisor has been toying with it and researching how to set things up and get it working, and I've been doing the same recently. I discovered that by way of Group Policy Management, I can basically set it up to where, when someone logs on to a new computer, their profile will download and it will give them everything they need/want. Their files/folders (Documents, Music, Downloads, Desktop, etc) will all be living on the server. They will never connect to it by way of Wifi or remotely (WAN) and only by Ethernet (LAN), so speed isn't a concern. One thing to keep in mind: All of our users, except for 3, are on Windows 7 Professional. 2 of those 3 are on Windows XP (due to legacy reasons), and the last one is on an iMac (the boss loves his Macs). All of our Servers and Domain Controllers are Windows 2008 Server Enterprise edition. How do I link a Group Policy to a Group? I have created a Group Policy to test with that has 1 of everything I want to be using (Applications, files, folders, Data Base connections, things like that), but I have yet to figure out how to link that to a Group. I have a Group with a Testing account in it. I'm just missing the part where I connect the two to where, when I log into the account, all of the Group Policy settings will take effect and the Profile will be a Roaming one. What is the easiest way to turn a .exe into a .msi package? I am very wary of online file format conversion (or package conversion in this case) tools. Too much uncertainty in regards to virus', malware, spyware, etc. I'll be using the .msi packages, once I make them, to update their programs and give new ones as time goes on. For those with experience with this, what advice do you have in how I should set this up? Basically, at first I was making a single policy with everything anyone could ever use and was going to say "Ok, this user gets these things and the rest don't.", like that. Then I realized how much a pain in the butt that would be to manage as it took 5 clicks and some typing to give a single user one "thing" (file, folder, drive, application, wtv). Now do that 50 times with 50 items. LOL NO. So, then I realized it would be better to have one generic policy (that covered everything everyone would need), and multiple unique policies based on department. Then I could just attach 2 policies to a single group, if that is even possible. I assume it is. Not sure if there is a more efficient way. We have around 50 employees in total right now and are going to be expanding in the near future (20 more people roughly), so ease of use is paramount to give us time to do other things. Lastly, how can I set a user to be able to write to a file, but not delete it? Basically, we are going to be using an intranet communication software. It will keep a history of their logs (for obvious reasons), which I want to allow to update, but not be deleted, and a copy to be kept on the server which will update either when the file gets bigger (i.e. more messages have been sent), or a new one is made (i.e. they empty it, which is against our policies, and it starts to fill up again). I can't come up with an elegant way to do that. *sigh* I am very adamant about using Group Policy to make Roaming Profiles (as long as that is the best way). My current method of updating user's ... well ... anything is to set a task in their task scheduler to run a Batch File that lives on a network drive that everyone has access to. This is not optimal at all. It barely gets by. Very very ghetto. Group Policy is basically the GUI version of what I want (mass updates for everyone, a centralized point where anyone can go to fix things, etc), which is epic. Thanks for any help you can offer, Vitalius

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone had experience with any third party resource monitors for Server 2008. If anyone has any recommendations, that would be very helpful. I have a deploy server that I'd like to check the performance on (I'm looking to upgrade my image deployment speed). The built-in resource monitor is only showing network speeds from 0-100Mbps even though we're pretty sure this should have a 1Gbit network card in it. I need to verify what sorts of speeds we're getting. Thanks!

After every restart (usually due to windows update), all the folders on my server go to shared to not shared. It is really starting to get annoying. Especially when using my VPN and need to access an important file but turned out that folder isn't being shared. I am using Windows Server 2008 right now. I will eventually move over to linux when I get the time to learn more about it. Right now Windows Server 2008 is holding steady for me. Another problem I am having is getting the Group Policies going. I am trying to make it so I don't require a password for the guest account I'm working on. So when people use any of my systems, they can just use the guest account to use it without me having to log in all the time. I have changed the password policy and set the minimum requirements to 0 and the complexity disabled. But still can't get past the part of the password without an error stating the password is too short or doesn't need the complexity. I also have that Group Policy Enforced, but it doesn't seem to work right now. My main problem is the shared folders going from shared to not shared
