In terms of raw performance, you can pick up some older dual-socket CPUs that'll beat out modern quad cores at the same price point (though they'll use more power). The build will probably be a ZFS storage box at first, and if I upgrade later on I might use it to host virtual machines or as a computing node or something. Specs: Intel x5650 @2.66 GHz (x2) - Each one consumer about the same amount of power as a 4670K and has the same raw performance (though much less performance per clock) 24GB DDR3 1333 ECC Memory (3x8GB) (x2) - The motherboard I'm looking at has 6 slots, and supports up to 96GB of memory. However, 96GB of registered ECC memory would cost an arm and a leg, and I found 24GB kits for relatively little, so I'm going with 48 to fully populate the board. For a ZFS build, a lot of RAM will make it speedy, and an ESXi machine will help with VM hosting. ASUS Z8NR-D12 - I ended up not being able to find a Z8NA-D6, but Newegg is selling this model for $200. What's more, it's being sold from a reputable reseller with some RMA support. Unfortunately it limits the cases I can install it in. RM 850 - It's got two 8-Pin CPU connectors, which are required for the motherboard I'm using. I'm looking for one with less wattage, and the Seasonic 520W might be one (I'm looking for confirmation). NVidia GT 520 - The board doesn't come with a graphics adapter, and I have one lying around. I'll probably pick up an LSI 9211 if I end up needing more than 6 drives. The drives will probably be WD Red or Seagate NAS, my research shows little reason to choose an SE over a Red, with the exception of peak performance. However my intention is to have a lot of data hit the cache first before going to the disk, so the performance doesn't matter as much. If the system performs well enough, I might pick up an Intel I350-t4 (4x1Gb) or an Intel x540 (10Gb NIC). A network iSCSI target for game footage, video editing, backups will help a good deal if the array can push upwards of 300 MB/s. I need an SSI EEB case. A full tower ATX seems like a waste, so I'm looking at the GD07 from Silverstone. I might go rackmount, but I'm having trouble finding a rackmount case with SSI EEB compatibility. Here's a 2U one from Norco. A 1U would be ideal but is much harder to find power supplies for (and is also much louder). I believe it is, since the end of the Kingston part number seems to indicate the # of dimms and the total kit size, while the Asus QVL only specifies dimms. EDIT: No more ASUS Z8NA-D6. Can't find it anywhere, and the new one I'm looking at is $130 cheaper, and supports twice as much memory. The original case I was looking at from Norco isn't listed as compatible with an ATX power supply. If I end up using this system as an ESXi host, then I won't need the hotswap bays as much. The new case I'm looking at has 6 internal bays for drives, which is more than I need. Can't use the GD07 or GD08 either. I wouldn't be able to use the drive cage. Got to find a new case for it. I HAVE BOUGHT PARTS: CPUs: Intel x5650 (x2) - Bought off e-bay, pulled from a working system and tested. Should be fine as long as they aren't damaged in shipping, CPUs don't die very easily. Motherboard: ASUS Z8NR-D12 - It's the only one I could find that was relatively cheap (Newegg is trying to shed these babies), and it came with RMA support and a 3-year warranty. Can't beat that. CPU Cooler: Intel BXSTS100C - It's meant for a 130W LGA1366 CPU, so it should be able to work with the x5650's no problem while being quieter than it otherwise would be. RAM: 24GB DDR3 1333 ECC Memory - It's Kingston, so I know they did the validation well. It's not directly listed on the Asus QVL (they only list DIMMs, not kits), however I got this reply from Kingston support, which I interpret as "The part is supported, but discontinued. Here's a better option". I only bought one kit so I could see if it would work (running a single CPU). If it doesn't work, I'll send it back. Worst case, I'm out $180. I'll take the chance, since the modules they list as compatible are about $100/8GB, whereas this is $60/8GB. If this kit isn't compatible, I'll go to town with modern, supported RAM. Then I can fill this baby up with up to 96GB (not that I need that much RAM for a storage server ;)) PSU: Seasonic S12II 520W Bronze - I don't need much power for this build, and according to the Seasonic website it has one 8-pin and one 4+4 pin CPU connector, so I should be able to use it with this motherboard. It's got power for 6 SATA drives, and I can use 4 molex-SATA power adapters if I need more drives. Seasonic confirmed that it should work: OS Drive: Adata SP600 64GB - Going to host the OS while I verify the system gets put together. Once I can verify that all components are working, I'll reuse it as a ZIL or L2ARC, or maybe for something else. Fantastic deal, only cost me $5 more than the 32GB version. For now, it'll be running in single-socket mode, which I believe I can do (more linked here). Once I get the memory I need, I'll install the second CPU.

I'm looking to buy a used X58 Lga 1366 Motherboard, Asus Sabertooth is preferred but not a must. Any good places to look? (Ebay prices seem to be massively inflated on X58 Chipset motherboards) - I'm okay with bendt pins and other easily repairable issues.

I was gifted an old i7 990x as a 'thanks' for helping tear down a friend's old Alienware. I thought I'd grab a cheap second hand x58 mobo and build a sweet little gaming rig for my kid. Sadly, it seems mATX x58 motherboards are rare and crazily expensive. So should I give up and sell the cpu or is it worth keeping looking for a board??

Hello, this is my first time on the LTT forums and i was looking around for solutions on trying to push my old machine back up to speed after 7 years. It's been running pretty slow as of this point, and there are also a few very noticeable problems such as: - Power loss to USB cables when more than 3 USB ports are utilised from the rear port (motherboard) - PC slows down on 30 minute intervals, with the machine taking a long time to load on startup and after the interval starts, the pc locks up a few of the windows for around 3-5 minutes, e.g. chrome tabs stop responding, file explorer windows stops responding - These intervals also either freezes up the app or take a long time to load the files (e.g. moving to different region of the game's map and it has to load that part) PC specs are as follows (note: all the components are 7+ years old, and no OCs were done): Intel Core i7 920 MSI X58 Pro-E Kingston HyperX 1333MHz triple channelling kit (3x 2GB) and Kingston value ram (3x 2GB) Corsair 750W PSU XFX nVidia GeForce GTX260 (896MB, 448-bit, 999MHz clock speed) 2x 1.5TB Western Digital Green, 3.0TB Western Digital Green (boot up partition is on one of the 1.5TB WD Green HDD) Coolermaster CM690 Casing I've done the following steps that i thought of that could possibly improve its performance: - Defragmented all the HDDs - Disassembled the whole PC to clean out dust and replace the thermal compound (which includes disassembling the GPU cooler and replacing the thermal compound there) - Bent back a few of the pins on the motherboard (there were 3 small pins which looked out of place) Cleaning out the dust and replacing the thermal compound solved the crashing issue i had, which i'm gonna assume that the issue was caused by overheating. As of now, i don't know which of the components are failing. I've tested the all the drives, and did diagnostic tests on the RAM sticks and they all seem to be working fine. So far what i've concluded is that either the PSU or the motherboard could be failing. I would gladly try any solution (with explanation and reasons, of course) presented on this thread

Decided my old I7-950 needed some updates. $40 ebay Xeon x5675, scavenged 24gig of Samsung DDR3 1333 ECC server memory. (free) Couple hours of testing and playing 4ghz offset Voltage max at 1.21v on all 6 cores with a max CPU temp of 62c on air with my old Tuniq tower Extreme. Waiting for my new case a Corsair Obsidian 750D AF to try any higher. The motherboard needs more cooling. Yes i am using a screwdriver as a power switch. Old case and old parts are paying for the new case so i only have $40 total into the upgrade. I work primarily with servers so I haven't over clocked a CPU since my old Q6600 and phenom x2 955 days. What is the normal ghz for a 1366 on air? Anything i should be weary of? Thanks

Hey everyone! I'm trying to build a cheap desktop to upgrade the trash I have right now. I want to use it for every day purposes and gaming. I was wondering what motherboard would be better? LGA 1366 single socket LGA 1366 dual socket What are the advantages and disadvantages of the mobos? I want to put 2 xenon x5660s into the dual socket but if I cannot overclock it I think the single socket board would be better. I am afraid that the dual socket will cause a bottle neck with speed and graphics. What board would best suit my needs?

Current CPU MOBO RAM combo i7 950 3.06ghz LGA 1366 MSI X58m Kingston 12gb (3 X 4gb) (not sure of the exact type sure its basic) I have been successful with OC to 3.6 maybe higher now that I Have an H100i V2 I am not really felling the crunch with speed or profance but really its the features. Mobo features is really where I am felling limited. Sata 2 only 2 usable PCIe slots no USB 3. The machine was built originally in 2010 but everything has been replace excepted the MOBO RAM CPU. I am sure I am not getting the performace my Samsun EVO or my GTX970 is capable of. 3 questions - Does anyone think my combo is worth anything to sell on say ebay or craigslist? If yes - Sell it as a bundle or part out? - How much?

Hey all, just wanting to see what would be the best dual-socket lga1366 motherboard. Preferably it would have at least 3 PCI-E lanes for video cards, and lots of RAM slots. I was looking at the EVGA SR-2, which would be really awesome, except that the max "supported" RAM amount is 48GB. Though it can go to 96 by the looks of things. It's pretty pricey though, but still better price-wise than a 1st Gen Threadripper to start up. I'm picking up two Xeon X5570's for $30, and need a dual board at some point to be able to use them. Sorry for my bad english. i am running my x58 which include x5670 @ 4.20ghz at 1.375v with my asus p6t (non SE) i wanted to push it more.. since i got it for really cheap and running it for like a year or so now.. i wanted to know about some modding.. especially bios mods.. since i have an issue that most peoples also have but i couldn't find a solution maybe bios modding could help here.. my x5670 multiplier doesn't go higher then 22x.. like my bios allows me to ramp it up to 24x.. but i don't after booting into windows it doesn't stick there.. i tried each and everything to overclock my cpu more then this.. but it doesn't overclock more then that.. i really wanted to try different motherboard bios like asus p6t SE or deluxe.. since i wanted to try something new if my cpu doesn't even go higher then this after modding the bios i will be happy that i learn something.. please if someone can tell me the methods of crossflashing bios.. please help me guyz i wanted to learn.. and one more thing.. i am a BIGG noob when it comes to modding bios.. HELP

Ive recently come across a dual socket 1366 motherboard along with a pair of xeons x5660 for $120. i was thinking about picking it up some time this week and using it as my temporary pc mainly for ableton live 9, nas, and some light weight gaming until i manage to save enough money for a ryzen build. I do have some questions about this build and im going to list them down below. 1st question. can a graphics card, a raid card, and 3/4 usb 3.0 pcie cards run at full speed in a pcie 2.0 slots? Theres 7 pcie 16x slots running at 8x. 2nd question. Is there a Windows based nas program? Once i get enough money for a ryzen build, i will be strictly using this as a htpc/nas. 3rd question. What gpu would you guys recommend for streaming and fortnite? Fortnite mainly. I want to run the game at 1080p with high/epic view distance and textures and everything thing else set to low or off.

Worth to overclock CPU at 4.5 GHz and buy new rams so I can run triple channel for higher speeds and capacity? Will be able my pc run games like pubg at high /1080 p and 60 frames? Hello there, Yesterday I was having issues with a game so I decided to uninstall and reinstall my display drivers. It worked until they updated. Every time I'd shut down and boot back into my PC or restart, it would progressively take longer to boot into windows. Late last night, however, I could no longer boot into windows, the BIOS would flicker and it would not get past initializing the RAID drivers after BIOS. After the BIOS had flickered for a bit, it would just simply go to a blank, black screen yet it was doing something since the monitor did not once turn itself off or go to sleep. I thought that it was the BIOS chip that had died but this morning, I tried two motherboards, two CPU's, 3 different RAM sticks all with the same issue. With the hard drives plugged into the motherboard, however, it will simply say 'Loading Asus express gate' and then go to a black screen without showing BIOS. Specs: Xeon X5670 - stock speeds Asus P6T6 WS Revolution Corsair Vengence RAM - 2 x 2GB 1 x 4GB DDR3 AMD HD 5830 1GB GPU Aerocool 600W PSU It has got to the point that I cannot even load into BIOS on either motherboard tested. I can't figure this out so I am coming to the forum for help... I can only suggest GPU or RAM that is the issue since I don't have spares of these. Please, someone help. Thanks, BP.

I own a Gtx 680. and I will use my Computer mostly for Gaming. Which Cpu will not bottleneck my GPU? I currently own an x5460, which gets way to hot witch my Coolermaster Seidon 120m. Hello, I'm looking for the absolute cheapest mobo with a 1366 socket that supports overclocking. I've only been able to find $100+ mobos or like $40 that are locked, mostly Dell workstation motherboards. I have a Xeon X5670 and I'm trying to learn to OC well with the cheapest stuff I can. I got the chip for $30, I'm getting a gtx 560 ti, and I have a pretty cheap 300w power supply and I'll be getting a much better 450-500w psu soon that can actually handle the system I'm making under load. Summary: I want to find even the crappiest cheapest lga 1366 motherboard I can with overclocking support. Can anyone recommend anything? Thanks

Hi there i have just picked up a gigabyte GAX58USB3 1366 board and i was under the impression this x58 chipset is xeon compatible so i have ordered an x5687 which is on its way. i have since looked on the gigabyte website and noticed that it isnt listed as compatible although the six core ones are so does anybody know if it will work anyway if the bios is up to date etc. i have got a x5470 771 cpu with the 771 to 775 adaptor that i have been using without any problems for a year now and that was deffinately not listed as compatible but still worked so i figured this may do. Any advice appreciated.

Hi guys, I'm trying to revive an old Intel DX58OG board with an Intel i7 920. Here is a photo album: http://imgur.com/a/zFy3o I think the pins might be bent, but I'm not sure. I included images in the imgur album. If I unplug the CPU power the fans will spin very fast and the post code LED will not display anything. With the power connected, the post code will give either 17 or bF. Any help?
