Where is the RAM controller on skylake?
CornFlix._. posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
I am troubleshooting for a friend and narrowed it down to the ram controller. He has an z170 board so its skylake or the generation before. It wont start with a 3 short beep - beepcode which means that something is up with the ram. The ram sticks are totally fine and different ram wont do the trick. The only thing left is the ram controller which is either on the cpu or the northbridge. I can't find any useful information online which is why i am asking here. I dont want to tell him to buy a new motherboard only to realise that he needs a new cpu. -
So today I discovered that my PC won't turn on anymore, what a nice Sunday after going through a The Varus infection… The specs: intel core i5 6400 @ 2.7 GHz asus z170a motherboard 24 GB of mixed DDR4 RAM (3 8 GB sticks, I don't remember the exact speed.) Zotac GTX 1060 6GB be quiet L8-400W PSU 1 TB of Storage split between 3 SSDs OS: opensuse Tumbleweed Linux (64 bit) BIOS version: I have no idea The situation: After having worked mostly fine for years the system doesn't boot properly anymore, just spinning the fans and lighting the motherboard power and CPU_LED leds. The power LED in the power button isn't lit. This is true even with everything but PSU, monitor, CPU and CPU and case fans and power connectors as well as some dumb USB and audio headers disconnected. (24 Pin and 8 Pin are connected, I have tried reseating.) I have tried removing the CMOS battery and putting it back in after several minutes, removing system memory, unplugging all SATA devices, no changes. When checking the power supply as described here the PSU claims to be fine (5V between Power Good and Ground), it should be noted that I have only tested this with no load, manually connecting Power on and Ground. Previous issues: In the past years I have experienced random system freezes (video freezes, audio loops a ~ quarter second long clip) with the system sometimes still being accessible via ssh. In these situations I would normally hard reboot the system, recently I discovered that when doing nothing in this situation the system reboots itself after some time (still showing that same frame until the reboot). These happen usually when playing minecraft or rendering video, this might mean that one CPU core doesn't like sustained load… Also during the past few years the CMOS battery consumption has been unusually high, consuming one battery every ~ four months. (When the system is powered off I disconnect it from the wall.) For both of these issues I could never find a cause. What I haven't tried yet: I have not tried swapping PSU, CPU or motherboard, as I don't have any spares lying around. (I could grab a working PSU from a family members system, but wouldn't be comfortable potentially damaging it.) I also didn't try checking the Power good pin while the system is powered on, as the pins aren't exposed while plugged into the connector. Reseating of the CPU didn't happen either, the thermal paste is years old and I don't have any laying around. Question: Ii there anything else I should try? Given the previous history, which of the three remaining components (PSU, CPU, mainboard) is most likely to be at fault and should be replaced first? Thanks in advance! -gaboversta

Hi guys, Currently in a progress of building my new pc and I can't decide. Should I go with a motherboard with a 1150 socket and get a i5-4670k or it 4770k.Or should I go with a 1151 socket with i3-6100 or i3-5300. Also what cooler would be good with those CPUS. THANKS!

I have recently built a PC with components I brought from Amazon, Ebay and Facebook Marketplace, and have come into an error relating to the DRAM and CPU lights. Specs are: Motherboard: MSI B150I GAMING PRO Mini ITX CPU: i7 6700 GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SC RAM: 16GB DDR4 Corsair Vengence @ 2666mhz Probably not relevant specs, but: CPU Cooler: Intel stock cooler PSU: Aerocool Integrator 500W, 80+ Bronze Case: Thermaltake Core V1 Storage: 120gb PNY CS900 SSD & 2.5" WD 1TB HDD When I turned the PC on for the first time, the DRAM light stays on for about 1 second, and then the CPU light quickly flashes and goes back to the DRAM light. I have tried various things to diagnose this, taken out all front panel connectors and starting PC by making contact w/ a screwdriver (same light sequence), using different DDR4 RAM (same light sequence), unplugging the GPU power (same light sequence), unplugging the CPU power (just CPU light), taking out the RAM when starting (same light sequence), using different power cables (same light sequence) and resetting the BIOS w/ CMOS battery (unplugged for 30 mins w/ RAM unplugged and pressed the power button quite a lot to drain power. Fans start spinning, then stop about 1 second after, then straight back to same light flashing). The fans on the GPU tend to go faster then slower ever so often when lights are flashing. I haven't yet tried a new GPU, but I don't think it's a GPU issue because surely the lights wouldn't be flashing?, or using the integrated graphics (for the same reason as GPU), trying PC out of the case and trying a different GPU (even though it's again for the same reason, but I do have other GPU's). I've been looking up on here, Linustechtips forum page, though the motherboards manual, Tom's Guide and other websites and think the issue lies with either the motherboard or the CPU, from what I have diagnosed and what other people have said. I am thinking about buying a new motherboard to test if it's the CPU, but I'm also thinking about buying a different new CPU and returning it if that works with the motherboard, but am unsure which way to go which is where I would like help. Would also greatly appreciate any help that can be given without throwing more money at the issue, but if I have to, then I guess I have to. This is the first Intel build I've done before, so am less aware of some issues that might happen and some common fixes that can be applied to potentially solve the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for reading.

Kaby Lake processor on Skylake motherboard BIOS update
Guest posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
BIOS - Basic Input Output System Features to look out if you want to use a Skylake motherboard on a Kaby Lake processor Skylake motherboard chipset: (if you see this in your motherboard it means it is a Skylake board and was originally designed to work with Skylake processors) Z170 (allows overclocking), 4 DIMM slots, SATA RAID Q170, 4 DIMM slots, SATA RAID H170, 4 DIMM slots, SATA RAID B150, 4 DIMM slots H110, 2 DIMM slots DIMM slots refer to how many sticks of RAM the chipset can support. Kaby Lake processors: (here are list of Kaby Lake processors, desktop only) K at the end - allows overclocking T at the end - lower powered (low TDP), basically consumes less power at a small decrease in performance E at the end - embedded processor, usually means they are stuck into the motherboard Intel Core i7 (4 cores 8 threads) i7-7700K i7-7700 i7-7700T Intel Core i5 (4 cores 4 threads) i5-7600k i5-7600 i5-7600T i5-7500 i5-7500T i5-7400 i5-7400T Intel Core i3 (2 cores 4 threads) i3-7350K i3-7320 i3-7300 i3-7300T i3-7100 i3-7100T i3-7101E i3-7101TE Pentium (2 cores 4 threads) G4620 G4600 G4600T G4560 G4560T Celeron (2 cores 2 threads) G3950 G3930 G3930T Great, now if you can confirm you have one of the item above (or planning to get one) then you need to know that Skylake motherboard won't work without a motherboard BIOS update to support Kaby Lake CPU. Now to update motherboard you need to gain access to BIOS of the motherboard. Most of the board will not allow you to do that without the matching CPU even if Kaby Lake has the same socket as Skylake. Then what to do? Fortunately some motherboards allow users to update BIOS without needing a CPU at all. Each of them are named differently so here is a list of it. (just look for these features when buying motherboard) Gigabyte: Q-Flash Plus (note the Plus, not regular Q-Flash) Asus: USB Bios Flashback (guide is for X99 chipset but should work with Z170 chipset: http://event.asus.com/2012/mb/USB_BIOS_Flashback_GUIDE/) MSI: BIOS Flashback+ ASRock: No info. Instant Flash still requires you to get into the BIOS. (http://www.asrock.com/support/BIOSUI.asp?cat=BIOS8). Contact them here (http://www.asrock.com/support/index.asp?cat=RMA) EVGA: You can not do that but they offer a service (http://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmviewfaq.aspx?faqid=59679&topicid=0) SuperMicro: No info, but they offer a service (https://www.supermicro.com/support/rma/rma_bios.cfm) ECS: You can not do that most likely. eBLU still requires to even have access to OS (http://www.ecs.com.tw/extra/eblu/) If your motherboard does not have the feature mentioned then you need to get a Skylake processor to update BIOS. NOTE: This only needed if your BIOS is not updated to use with Kaby Lake processor. Hope this help. (not sure if it should be in Guides category or CPU category) -
Sup peeps! I've been streaming time to time for a while now and my viewer base is starting to grow. Now that it's starting to get a bit more serious, a pc update is in place. Current setup includes an i7 6700k, GTX 980Ti, 16Gb DDR4 300MHz, 500gb ssd, couple of hdd and 2560x1440 165Hz monitor. I mostly play cs go with some rocket league/world of warships/h1z1/bf1 mixed in. I'm trying to get a bit more of the stress to my cpu because my upload speed is quite low (100 down/5 up) and raising my stream quality would either need a better connection or a better cpu. Upping the bitrate makes cs go lag just enough to make me frustrated and unwilling to stream but upping the cpu usage makes my fps drop enough that I notice when the dips go under 144Hz and that distracting while playing. Currently I'm leaning towards LGA 2011-3 and i7 6850k because of the full 40 lanes. Only thing that I'm wondering is that is the update from 6700k to 6850k worth it and does the two extra cores bring enough to table that i could leverage them? I also do game on full 2560x1440 so the res does make it a bit more demanding and the other option that I was considering was buying the new asus PG258q 240Hz monitor and gaming with that as the resolution is only 1080p and should be easier to run. Do share your thoughts.

So i know that some skylake non-k cpus were able to oc with certain boards, . My question is: can you do it with a g4560? And if so.. what mobos?

I would love to find a motherboard socket 2011\1151 with 32gbs of ddr4 like this: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/g998TW/gigabyte-motherboard-gax99socchampion I just don't know if there are any more please help me out I would like 32gb but if there are none then 64gb, as 128 would be overkill?? I would like to just populate 4 DIMMs instead of 8 I am a gamer, video editor but only up to 1080p @ 60fps, and edit 4K photos

With Ryzen out and some great Intel options I am wondering what would be the better course in a few months time. I game at 1080p and the only AAA I have for now is BF1 although I play more World of Warships at the moment. However I hope to get into some more high end games soon including the Witcher III and Skyrim Special editions that came out. Thus I want to know if buying an i7-2600 or even 2600K used would be a good option for me. That is IF my motherboard can handle overclocking the K since it is not a Z class. It is also a first generation Sandy Bridge and I believe it may have the Sata bug that plagued the early models. It is already giving me some trouble on a few of the ports. Obviously I would like a new GPU to get the best results and I am torn between three options, 480/580 8G, 1060 6g, or try for a 1070. Which leaves me to my big dilemma, if I only upgrade then I can get the better GPU! While a new build in either platform will be at least 300-500 dollars and result in a cheaper GPU option out of necessity. I don't render much video except for family film, however with my son just turning 4 that may increase soon. So let me know what you guys and gals think would be the best option going forward in a few months time if you were in my shoes. As always I appreciate your time and input.

Hi Everyone! I have 2 GTX 970's and i want to run them in SLI. I just got a PSU that was big enough to run it. I found out that my motherboard only supports crossfire and not SLI. I would like to know if there is any last gen motherboards out there that support a 1151 socket, DDR3 ram and are SLI supported. I would like it to be a ATX size. Thanks for the help!

Im planing to build a portable pc build in the node 202 case, from fractal design. In that i need a motherboard, in which i have run in to problems. cause of the case, it have to be an itx board. Here im using a core i5 6600k. (lga1151). There's alot of motherboards which support this, but heres the thing. I use ddr3 ram, and i need onboard wifi. I have used PC partpicker for help, but all the suggestions seems to be outdated or non-existing. My budget for this particular part is at max 100 USD.

I'm about to start building a new rig with an i5 8400, so a quick question first. I have a CoolerMaster Hyper TX3i as a cooler, the questions I have are, what is the difference between that and the Hyper TX3 EVO? And, kinda obvious but, it will work fine on my CPU/mobo, right? Thanks!

Hey,got a little problem. I got a g4560 with cooler and everything, but i have bigger and better one,its from an old Athlon PC.Its nearly 2x bigger than the stock one, not mentioning that it actually has COPPER on it. i have the mounting piece of metal and everything.the problem is that i cant find an adapter for the mounting thin that i would put in the holes you normally put a stock cooler in. P.S. :No need to hurry, my mobo hasnt still arrived (the first one died at the first start) Thanks for your responses and answers, Axxesload

If you are from Germany, you may be familiar with Mindfactory and its "Mindstar" flash deals - products sold at increasing discounts until out of (pre-allocated) stock. I came across a deal I thought could be very interesting to anyone looking for a 1151 CPU [on server-grade chipsets] who can buy from Germany: a Xeon E3-1245v6 for €219 at the time of writing this: https://www.mindfactory.de/product_info.php/Intel-Xeon-E3-1245v6-4x-3-70GHz-So-1151-TRAY_1169383.html That's 300MHz higher base clock than a locked 7700 for the price of a 7600-7600K Shipping is not included, but you can typically get free shipping by buying between 00:00 and 06:00 AM (at least within Germany). (Screenshot in case the deal finishes by the time you read this)

Hey there, While building my first PC I've encountered a problem. While trying to install "Coolermaster Hyper 612 v2" on an 1151 socket, there wasn't any instruction in the user manual regarding this socket even though the cooler description says it supports 1151. The user manual mentions how to install on 1366/1150/1156/1155/775 and AMD sockets. How should I proceed? Cab i install it similar to any of the above-mentioned sockets? Thanks.

I am looking at two asus z170 (deluxe and WS) boards for a build and i was wondering which one would be better???

Hello, I've been looking for a new motherboard lately because I currently have an 1150 motherboard and running an i5 4460 and it just hasn't been cutting it anymore. I've seen that kaby lake is coming up, and was going to upgrade once it released. My main build is black and blue, and I would like my motherboard to look the same. The only issue is, is that there is one thing that literally no black and blue motherboard has, and that's the cover for the ports, such as what the ASUS Z170-A has on theirs. If you guys could provide any insight on this, I am really hoping to upgrade. I'm not interested in RGB lightning, and my budget is around $150 for the motherboard.

6700k Choosing a Motherboard for a 6700k
AlexBass99 posted a topic in CPUs, Motherboards, and Memory
Hi, I'm going to upgrade my PC and I don't know if I'm choosing good motherboards, I want to buy a i7 6700k and for the moments I have this: - Asus Z170-A https://www.amazon.es/Asus-Z170-Skylake-Crossfire-Importado/dp/B0126R2LBK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482787597&sr=8-1&keywords=aSUS%2BZ170-A&th=1 - MSI Z170-A PRO https://www.amazon.es/MSI-Z170-PRO-zócalo-DDR4-3200/dp/B0152T1FQG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1482788368&sr=8-1&keywords=placa+base+1151+7.1 - Gigabyte GA-Z170M-D3H https://www.amazon.es/Gigabyte-GA-Z170M-D3H-DDR4-SDRAM-Celeron-Pentium/dp/B013GJ0LBY/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1482789135&sr=8-19&keywords=ddr4%2B1151%2B7.1&th=1 - Gigabyte GAZ170XP-SLI https://www.amazon.es/Gigabyte-GA-Z170M-D3H-DDR4-SDRAM-Celeron-Pentium/dp/B013E37LDS/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1482789135&sr=8-19&keywords=ddr4%2B1151%2B7.1&th=1 I don't know if the MSI is the worse because is more cheaper or actually is better than the others -
Hello. I am running a system with an i3-6100 and a Z170 board and all that fancy new stuff. I am wondering if, for fun (on a separate HDD), I could install Windows 98 to use on my machine. I have the install disc, and with it I have Windows 95 and Windows 2000 Professional. Can any of these run with my hardware? I don't want to waste my time trying if it won't ever work.
