\If you are a user of Ubuntu there is a good chance at some point in time you have used Wine at some point in time. And at some point you have also questioned why things are the way they are and how to install wine. And when you install Wine through the terminal you do not get the latest version of Wine, in this case Wine 7.0. Well I am going to walk you through how to install Wine 7.0 through the terminal and I will also give you access to an install script repository and a video I made so that you can choose your own method of following along. So lets get into the installation process shall we. Step 1 Enabling the 32 bit architecture. This is something that needs to be done to prevent any conflicts with installing any software through wine. sudo dpkg -add-architecture i386 Step 2 Next you need to download the WineHQ key to be able to download from the WineHQ sources wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key Step 3 Now you need to move the key into the correct place sudo mv winehq.key /usr/share/keyrings/winehq-archive.key Step 4 Now you need to add the WineHQ repository to the sources list wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/jammy/winehq-jammy.sources Step 5 Now you need to move the WineHQ sources to the sources list sudo mv winehq-jammy.sources /etc/apt/sources.list.d Step 6 Now you need to update the system sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade Step 7 Now we install Wine version 7.0 sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable Now you have Wine version 7.0 installed. Which now means you can install any Windows software without too many problem. I can also vouch that Epic Games Store will also work through Lutris as well. Now go fourth and use Linux how you want it without the bloatware that comes with Windows. Code repository https://github.com/Nmatt1/Wine7.0 Video

I just installed Arch Linux on my laptop. I'm using the KDE plasma GUI and using lutris with the steam wine to run brawlhalla, but it is REALLY laggy. Normaly on windows on this same pc I get 60-100 FPS but with linux I get 5-20 FPS. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Now those of you who use Linux probably already know what Wine is. And from what i could see from their website, Wine is not an emulator, my best understanding is that it takes the native windows code and translates it into code that your operating system, in Wine's case linux, can understand. This seems to enable your system to run programs with 100% of your system resources available. And I'm starting to wonder why game console emulators don't take the same route to emulating old console games. If this method were applied to console emulation, mobile phones could run up to ps3 and XBox360, maybe higher, and they could also run Nintendo's entire console and handheld library, including the Switch. So what's preventing programmers from doing so?

Hi, I am here to share how Office 2016 can be installed on Ubuntu 18.04LTS using PlayOnLinux (I tried on Kubuntu 18.04.4LTS, and elementaryOS 5.1.5). But the main reason I decided to post this here because I need help with PlayOnLinux scripting (which until now I still don't understand). I have previously made a post about this on the PlayOnLinux forum (to no avail, but someone managed to get it installed based on my guide so I am happy ). Steps Install PlayOnLinux (according to instructions on playonlinux.com for the latest version, which is needed for WINE 4.15) and required dependencies:- sudo apt-get install playonlinux winbind smbclient gnome-disk-utility wine-stable:i386 Using POL, install WINE version 4.15 (32-bit). Download Office 2016 from office.com (offline version was the only one that worked for me. The IMG contains both x86 and x64 installers). After downloading it, mount the IMG file using gnome-disk-utility. On POL, Click Configure > New to create a new drive 32-bits Windows Installation Wine Version 4.15 Name the drive as you like. I named it "Office2016" Select the new drive > Install Components. Install "msxml6" and "riched20" Select "Wine" tab > "Configure Wine" "Applications" > Windows version = Windows 7 "Libraries" > set the following:- riched20 (native, builtin) msxml6 (native, builtin) Exit "configure wine", open "Registry Editor". Navigate to "HKCU\Software\Wine", and Right click on "Wine" > New > Key. Rename new key to "Direct2D". Right click on "Direct2D" > New > DWORD Value. Rename new DWORD to "max_factory_version". Ensure that "max_factory_version" is set to 0. Close the Registry Editor. On the configure window > Miscellaneous > "Run a .exe file in this virtual drive". Select the "setup.exe" that was in the IMG file that you mounted back in step 4. The installation should run normally, but the installation window will be half blank. If you have an indicator applet, the Office logo should pop up there. Else Wine should spawn a system tray for you. Click on this to spawn the progress window in the bottom right. After installation completes, use the "kill all processes" in the POL configuration window. Create application shortcuts as needed (in the "General" tab). Copy "AppvIsvSubsystems32.dll" and "C2R32.dll" from <office2016-root>/Program Files/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/ClickToRun/ to <office2016-root>/Program Files/Microsoft Office/root/Office16/ Start any of the Office applications. It will prompt that Office is not activated. DO NOT use the license key that came in the box of the Office 2016 -- it will not work. Instead, go back to office.com > My Account > Service & Subscriptions . Under the "Install" link there is a "Show Product Key" link. Clicking on it reveals a product key different from the one you have in the box. Use this license key to activate Office instead. Once done, Office will be activated and can be used.

Hi LTT. I will be going back to college soon. For this i got a laptop, put on POPOS [20.04]. I will need the program Chemdraw. <links removed by staff> I have gotten so far as installing the program(using wine and winetricks), but upon going through the install wizard, and finishing the following errors occurs and the program closes without launching. I don't understand where they are coming from. Any Ideas?? I'm a bit lost here. I don't understand which keys are missing. Previous errors were a little more straightforward. Thanks.

I am new to the Linux field of os' and this is probably the dumbest reason I am making a forum but taking Linus Media Groups' inspiration with the gaming on linux, it has been in the back of my head since then. Ok to the point now. I have a problem with Overwatch from my windows install of windows where i also keep my steam files, (not in the same file actually but same disk) but every time i try to run overwatch after the battle.net launcher has found it i cant run overwatch and I keep getting the Initialization error F. Like I said I new to linux and the lower tier of coding it has so don't laugh to much if its a really simple line I have to enter or if its a depositor overwatch needs with wine.

I have recently switched from ubuntu to fedora. So here I was reinstalling my games. Every thing working better then on ubuntu, exept in game I can not choose with display my game is displayed on, in stead I get only 1 option: a virtual display (game starts on the wrong monitor) an X11 standard display. What am I doing wrong? I don't have a clue. P.S. still an uber noob when it comes to wine.

Well, the title and tags are self explanatory, but here goes: I am using the latest version of ubuntu and am trying to install wine. But it always says that I have broken packages, and that I have to install the dependencies, which are the ones shown above. Can anybody help me? Thanks for your time, Daniel

Hi I am doing a marketing project on a local beer/wine store and I need some information from a survey from people who are of drinking age. Its 5 yes/no questions and an age range question. If you guys could give some of your input it'll be great. So I decided to install Linux Mint Cinnamon on my laptop coming from Windows 10 because I was bored with it and wanted something fresh and I am absolutely loving it and I don't know why I didn't do it earlier. Now that I've come over and really liked it I'm heavily considering converting my gaming machine to Linux as well but from what I've seen on gaming-oriented Distros is that they're exclusively for gaming, no extra functionality for word processing, web browsing and so forth. I know I more games on Steam run well on Linux then ever before and I can use Wine and/or PlayonLinux but I don't want to choose a Distro that hinders gaming performance. If it helps at all my gaming rig has a Ryzen 5 2600 (stock clocks), 16GB of 3000MHz G.Skill RAM and a 1050Ti (which I intend to upgrade soon). I am a relative newbie with Linux but I'm more than happy to do some work in the terminal. Any help would be greatly appreciated, have a good Sunday afternoon.

Hey I'm trying to get Wine on my Mac (MBP 2015) to run some engineering programs that are only available for Windows. I got that idea from my professor at university but he's too busy to individually teach us and said that we need to figure it out on ourselves if we want to run it using Mac. I've downloaded Wine Stable from WineHQ, also XQuartz latest version and my program that I want to run (THERM, also latest version. I'm aware it's not on supported list but he insists it works as he runs it using Wine). Last night I got somehow THERM installer to run and it installed the program somewhere. Then I tried to launch it to not do anything. Then I thought maybe I should just wipe everything and start over but now I don't even get THERM installer to show up. Maybe I didn't wipe it last night? I also don't know how to test it as I don't know where it might have installed my program. I really would like to get Wine running and not bother with VM or Boot Camp as they require Windows install and eat up more RAM. Also, please don't suggest getting PC or come with suggestion not to game on Mac, I'm not going to do that. I just want to use my Mac the best possible way until I build PC in the future. I know I'm rare case but maybe we have someone here who knows what the issue might be. Thanks in advance Mondrayy

So, we have a thread for car discussion, LGBT, music, what random stuff we bought, music we're listing to etc here in Off Topic. So I figured why not one for alcohol & those who appreciate a nice beer, whether that is craft, mainstream or you make your own (like myself) or maybe you prefer bourbon or whisk(e)y or a nice refreshing white wine or warming red, or if you're into home-brewing/distilling/wine making feel free to discuss all that here. So i'll get it started, I work with alcohol on a daily basis as it is part of my job, as a hobby I brew beer & am active with a craft beer group on Facebook, I don't drink excessively (any more), I mostly enjoy IPA's (India Pale Ale) & rum. I love the fact where I live (Gold Coast, Australia) we have some pretty good craft beer, in fact two of our local beers just took out #1 & #2 in the Hottest 100 Australian craft beers over the weekend, which is cool. Currently i'm drinking a Czech Pilsner, I popped into one the local liquor stores today saw it and thought "I haven't had a Pils in a while" so decided to give that a go, along with some Ballast Point Grunion Pale Ale & a 6 pack of Brooklyn Lager cause it was on a special & dad wanted something & it comes recommended from mates who use it in a marinade at their bar for their slow cooked lamb shoulder. I know a lot of the audience here are probably under the legal drinking age of their country/territory of residence, but not all of us are, I am also aware some people are not a fan of alcohol & that's cool, but some of us are. So let's get to it & discuss what we like & whatever! Also here's a shot of the Pils I was drinking whilst typing this up, now i've moved on to the Ballast Point.

Hi, I am currently trying to install the MSI gaming app on ubuntu using wine. I have a MSI gtx 1060 and a pentium g4560. All advice would be greatly appreciated. I have some linux knowledge but it is fairly basic and I haven't used wine very much.
