i'm restoring an old Gateway desktop and i don't have any disk to restore the OS (don't think it even came with one) and i can't find an ISO anywhere online and was wondering if anyone knew of a place to get it? Gateway's site is no help and contacting them is useless, i tried. if you have the disk and could upload the ISO or know where to get it that would be great thanks.

So my father is running Windows XP on his work laptop and last weak they started running really slow and the boot time is around 10 min. I've already looked at the windows task manager and CPU and RAM usage is normal. I have also deleted any suspicious software and did a virus scan. So can it be the hard drive. Is there any software to check hard drive usage like on windows 8.

Is it possible to install Windows XP Pro 32-bit on my existing SSD that contains Windows 7 Pro 64-bit on two different partitions without any harm to the existing OS? Well let me rephrase that. I just installed WinXP on the same harddrive that my Win7 is installed on, but in another partition; did I damage the Win7 OS? If not, how can I boot to my Win7 because it keeps booting to my XP. I don't have the slightest clue why I didn't think before installing XP.

I was trying to install Windows XP on my 16GB Transcend drive. I managed to extract the files to the USB drive, but the after the first restart, it showed a BSOD upon 2 seconds display of the Windows XP logo. Here's what I did: 1. Shut down my PC, disconnected my only HDD. 2. Fired it up and disabled AHCI from BIOS(XP has trouble with AHCI enabled). 3. Inserted my Windows XP SP2 disk and USB drive. 4. After that, it was normal procedure - quick fromatted the drive with NTFS and started the installation. Everything went quite well but after the first restart, as mentioned above, there was a BSOD <see photo below> I reconnected my HDD and booted back to Windows 8.1. I checked the USB drive for dump file, but wasn't any. I don't think my specs matter but here they are anyway: Intel PDC G3220 ASUS H81M-E WD 1TB 7200rpm Twinmows 4GB DDR3 1333MHz

I have here a Dell Vostro 200 slim running Windows XP. I was looking to improve performance on this machine. Now I know the best solution would be to junk this system and buy something with Windows 7/8 or to install a linux operating system on here. However, the computer doesn't belong to me and the owner is looking to improve performance. I was looking to install some more RAM and an ssd onto the system, however I keep reading that ssds and windows xp do not go well together. Note: I was looking to use an ssd by Crucial or Kingston. In short, I was wondering what steps I would need to take in order replace the current hard drive with an ssd while avoiding all problems.

The aged desktop operating system (OS) has been demonstrated in a YouTube video (below) running on the original LG G Watch in an extremely trimmed down version. Video blogger Dave Bennett explained that he had to do some serious slipstreaming with Winmaker to keep the upload under 12 hours. The result removes the GUI and most of the drivers and runs a windowed command line. The result, at face value, is a little underwhelming but, considering that Bennett had only to install a BOCHS server and run his diminutive OS, the point wasn't so much to do anything practical, sensible or useful, but to climb the mountain because it was there. As he himself explained: Bennett has previously demonstrated running a Minecraft server on Android, and we're keen to see what he comes up with next. The LG G Watch was the first Android Wear device to reach the market and remains one of the few to opt for an oblong screen. Despite being on the shelves for less than a year, the device can be considered 'end of life' as many of the new features for Android Wear, including WiFi support, are not available for it owing to hardware limitations. 5 years ago people would have called you mental for proposing an idea to run Windows OS on a watch. look at us now. Hi, I want to install Windows XP (X) on 4 laptops Asus F5GL which comes with an intel T1600 1.66GHz 4gb ddr2 800MHz and nVidia 8200m. Now I wonder which verson of XP is better in performance such as gaming and browsing. I´m only looking at max dx9 games. Game such as GTA SA, NFS ug/2, Delta Force and so on. I know there are no more updates for it, but with an free AVG it will be just fine and most of the time it wont be connected to the internet. I got some recommandation of XP Pro SP2 32bit. I tested Windows 8 and it runs very fast BUT the lack of drivers it makes it slow when it comes to games. Windows 7 is a bit hungry in rams not like Windows 8. I don´t really want Windows 7, but if is better than any XP out there I would like to see and know why. Thanks!

Recently, I came across two old computers for the sum of $5 each. One is a Compaq Deskpro EP/SB and the other is a custom-built PC with a 1GHz AMD Athlon processor of unknown model. The one I'm currently fooling around with is the custom-built machine. I initially planned on turning it into a Linux Box by installing some distribution of Linux. As I already have disks for Ubuntu 15.04 and Elementary OS, I first tried booting the Ubuntu CD, knowing that it would run slowly. But, it never booted. Instead, I got a kernel panic before the Ubuntu splash screen appeared, with the error: So, I tried booting Elementary OS and got the exact same error. So, I tried booting into Xubuntu, as it's a lighter distribution and I figured that maybe Ubuntu and Elementary OS were too heavy for this computer. Xubuntu should, technically speaking, run just fine on this computer, but instead, I got yet another kernel panic when attempting to boot into it. The error is similar to the one I received with Ubuntu and Elementary OS, but slightly more informative: After that, I figured I'd just try and boot my Windows XP Professional CD to wipe the hard drive, to see if that would make anything any better. Once the Windows XP installer finished loading, and prompted me with what I wanted to do, I pressed enter to begin the Windows XP installation so I could wipe the hard drive. But, even that crashed too: So it's not a problem with Linux and this computer. It's an issue with this computer. It starts up into its installed operating system (which just so happens to be Windows ME) and otherwise runs just fine, so there must be a hardware or BIOS configuration that's not set right, but I can't figure out just what it is. Can anyone give me some guidance? I posted this same question on the Ubuntu forums, but I never received any responses.

I am trying to reinstall Windows XP on my dad's laptop. It looks like his hard drive with the OS (Windows XP) is corrupt and won't boot. Someone told me that I cannot purchase a ~$70 update edition on Amazon to reinstall the OS? Would I need to buy the full version or something, which I guess is more expensive? Thanks! EDIT: He can't find his original OS disc

Hey guys, I know that this is a weird question but I hope you guys can help. My grandpa was a big fan of a game called casino 2000 which he played on his old windows xp computer. However, my grandpa's sight wasn't too good to begin with but it is starting to get worse so he can't play casino 2000 anymore. Because of this I would like to ask if you guys know a pc game where he can play blackjack which is easy to see and understand because of the bad sight. Due to his old pc the game will be running on windows xp. It would be amazing if you guys could help, it would make me and my grandpa very happy. Thanks in advance! ~HeetHoofd

Does iTunes still wreck old computers? I remember that on my old Windows XP family computer in about 2006, opening iTunes would render the whole thing useless. Using it was slow and awful, and you couldn't do anything else while is was open. I also remember a few of my friend's computers acting the same way. I haven't used a non-gaming computer in a while (except at school, with no iTunes) so I wonder is this still true? Thanks for reading!

I got an old Windows XP PC from a relative. I took it apart, cleaned it out, and put it back together. Now I am trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 32-bit. I downloaded the ISO file and burned it to a DVD. I changed the boot priority to have the DVD drive as the first and only boot device. I put the disk in and the computer does not recognize it. I get back a message saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". I have tried redownloading and re-burning the disk image to no avail. PLEASE HELP

The specs are in my signature. I bought the ATI Radeon X1600XT for $17 (eBay), the AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ for $17(eBay), the RAM for $7 (eBay), cooler for $7 (Newegg) and the 350W Dell PSU for $8 (Micro Center). I had the Z11 lying around from my 1st build (which is now in a BitFenix Shinobi.) The motherboard and 256MB of RAM came from a dead computer that my grandmother gave me to tinker with (Compaq SR1616NX) and the 1GB RAM was something that my Dad had lying around. I also put in a SanDisk SSD and a WD Caviar Blue 500GB, which was in a broken laptop. You may think I'm crazy for doing so, as the board only supports SATA 1, but I had it around collecting dust. SanDisk gave me 2 SSDs (64GB Ultra Plus and 120GB Extreme) after I RMA'd a fairly basic 64GB SSD. The computer is built mainly of spares and used parts. In total, it cost me about $116. The case cost $60, but like I said it was lying around doing nothing. It will be running a dual boot, Windows 7 and Windows XP. The Windows 7 install will be on the SSD, and Windows XP will be on the mechanical drive. I will be using this machine mainly as an experimental machine. I will occasionally play Minecraft on it, and I will use it for HD video on my TV.

Hey guys, I want to play LAN games with my friends, but from all our own houses. I wanted to do this using a VPN. Seemed like a perfect plan. I set up a VPN server on my Windows XP machine. Then I connected and all was fine. So I sent some information to my buddy, and he couldn't connect. The error message told hem there already was a connection of the same kind. That was me. Now I have been searching for a multi client VPN server, but I can't find any good software. I know I could install windows server, but I'm not physically at the computer. I only have a TeamViewer connection with it. This means I can't install a new operating system. Does any of you guys know good software to setup a VPN? And please, don't come with Hamachi or Tunngle, I don't like them... Thx

Hello people, good evening. I'm new to the forum and I come in bearing questions. I'm not too knowledgable about computers and I have two of questions in my mind. I have an old computer that I mainly use for gaming. Specs are: -Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU -Nvidia GeForce 9800GT -4GB of DDR2 RAM (yeah it is that old) -Windows XP Professional I'm trying to make the most of it. Since I don't have the money to upgrade the hardware for the foreseeable future, should I update the sofware from XP to Windows 7? Or would that decrease the performance? My second question is, is there any point in spliting a single HDD into multiple partitions?

Hi. I have a situation with a customers computer. I have built a new system for this person with win8pro 64 bit. Previously he was using xp and outlook express for email client. Using pop3 service. Server was configured to delete emails off the server once they were downloaded to the computer using outlook express. I now have from the old computer the data files (email, contacts and what not) in the (as I understand proprietary outlook format) .DBX. Thunderbird does not understand this format. How can I get these emails into the new computer with windows 8 using thunderbird. I currently have his gmail configured with the new system. which is only getting the new email. But he needs his old ones. Anyone?

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2964358 (and http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-27249695 ), although I have written it up myself Microsoft has released an update for IE today which fixes the major security flaw discovered earlier in the week. It is update KB2964358 and is "Important" (clearly very important because it has not been released on a Tuesday). The update applies to IE 6 through 11, and is supported on Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 upwards. When XP support was discontinued, there was a lot of discussion as to whether this would happen. The answer is clearly yes, which is a good thing for all of those IE users, but it does appear to show that Microsoft will be forced to commit to supporting IE6-8 and XP for general consumers for a while to come, albeit only the critical vulnerabilities.

Hi there, I'm currently upgrading my pc that is presently running Windows XP. I want to install Windows 8 on to it and do not care much about losing data or programs. Would it be a good idea to format the hard drive and then install Windows 8 on to that same hard drive? Thanks

Hacking ATM Machines is nothing new, but it seems that instead of relying on ATM skimmers now some smart hackers in Europe are reportedly targeting ATM Machines using Malware-loaded USB drives to steal money. Most of the world’s ATMs are running on Windows XP operating system, which is highly vulnerable to Malware attacks. Just like your Desktop Laptops, some ATMs also have USB sockets, which is hidden behind the ATM’s fascia. The German security researchers who discovered the hack detailed their findings at the Chaos Computing Congress in Hamburg, Germany recently. They said that the thieves cut holes in the fascia to access a USB port and then uploaded malware to the machines. The malware creates a backdoor that can be accessed on the front panel. "These researchers explained that the malware allowed the thieves to create a unique interface on the ATMs by typing in a 12-digit code. This interface allowed for withdrawal and also showed the criminals the amount of money and each bill denomination inside the machines. This meant the thieves could save time by only taking the highest value bills." Dara Kerr from CNET news reported. Once the thieves finished their theft at a cash machine, they would patch up the hole to allow the same exploit to be used on other machines. This indicates that the criminal crew is highly familiar with the ATMs mechanism. The malware does not appear to harvest customer PINs or other sensitive data and now some banks have upgraded their ATMs to prevent them from booting from external USB drives. Watch the video on YouTube in Chaos Communication congress
