  1. Windows prompted for an update before restarting, I approved and at about 25% pc restarted into auto repair screen Now no matter what I do it keeps booting into auto repair Startup repair fails Safe mode resets back to auto repair screen I don't have a restoration point If I click on System Image Recovery it let's me browse for an installation media there I can see that all the drive letters are different somehow Also in the command prompt it starts as X:\windows\system32> instead of C:\ X:\ is the boot drive for some reason but it's a 500MB empty partition In C:\ I have a windows.old folder which wasn't there before
  2. Hi! I wanted to ask if anyone have a problem after installing the latest ((May) Windows update? After installing there is no sound at all. And i have tried everything.......
  3. So after a recent windows update my one server is once again acting funny and I neeed to fix it. I run blue iris and some boinc stuff on it, everything was working fine until the windows update and now after a few hours everything gets laggy and then either blue iris crashes or the whole pc does. When it's running normal blue iris uses like 3gb of ram, when everything gets glicy and slow it drops to a few hundred megs. Any idea whare I can start to troubleshoot it? I could reinstall but that's a pain
  4. Anyone here having issues with the update version 2004? Particularly stuttering on a constant interval (the audio even stutters hard that everything sounds gibberish)? It's unusable on my end and I've been trying to identify by process of elimination what could've caused it. I've reverted twice now and on both scenarios, the stuttering stopped. Specs on my signature/profile if that helps. I was pretty excited with WSL 2 coming to Windows. I use Docker and it was really fast but the constant stuttering just makes the pc unusable. I guess I'll live with my linux containers on Hyper-V for now until there's a solution to this.
  5. I'm bringing this to the news sessions because this issue has occurred with myself on my laptop running Windows 10 1803. So far so good, quality updates are important for stability and safety as we know without messing much with the OS itself so all good right? let Windows Update do it's thing and we're good right? Well no... after all this is Microsoft. In my case it was the later, it would go through a very long update is installing process only to around 94%~ say it was not possible to update and reverting changes only to repeat it at every single reboot. This was particularly extremely annoying as it made rebooting the notebook an extremely time consuming issue to go through this entire windows update failed process first, without mentioning the random unexpected reboots windows did on itself to install the update only to fail as well, making it an infinite loop indeed. Personal rant: Microsoft made available something called "Windows Update Troubleshooter" the program promises the convenience to fix issues of the Windows Update with an automated diagnostic, all you gotta do is run it and your Windows Updates problems should be solved.... awesome right? well no not really... this tool is as useless as useless can be, all it did was let me know "OH YOU HAVE UPDATES TO INSTALL YOUR FIX IS REBOOT" so pretty much all it made was force the boot loop... completely worthless tool... Microsoft ain't even trying come on... Nonetheless the issue is resolved already, following just a few simple commands on an administrator CMD will allow the update to be successfully installed: net stop wuauserv net stop cryptSvc net stop bits net stop msiserver Ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old Ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old net start wuauserv net start cryptSvc net start bits net start msiserver So it makes me wonder why can't Microsoft knowing how bad their Windows Update is and it's awful reputation with issues as this being somewhat common, try coming up with straightforward actual troubleshooting without having to force us users to adventure on google to fix their screw up.
  6. Sources: Softpedia MSPowerUser Microsoft is pushing Windows 7 & 8.1 "important updates" that are part of their telemetry. The articles state it seems all PCs that get the updates will part of the data collection regardless if they are part of the Microsoft’s experience improvement/usage analysis programs or have opted out, contrary to Microsoft's statement. My thoughts: I understand the importance & usefulness to collect data. It helps to fix, optimize, innovate, etc. However I firmly believe that it should always be on a opt-in/opt-out basis. I find it strange that Microsoft is pushing data collection on Windows 7 & 8.1. Could it be that they want accurate numbers on how many are still hanging onto the now aging OSes? Do they want to more user information to better sell it? It might be the cynic in me but I find it to hard to believe Microsoft here. To me there has to be more reasons to force data collection further, especially when this time it's outside of Windows 10.
  7. Windows updates got you down? Do you dislike some of the new features of a windows version newer than 1607? You want to avoid any further feature-updates but still get the bug fixes and security patches? You don't care about any Windows 10 features like edge, the WINDOWS STORE (might be actually important to some) or Cortana (or maybe you wish they did not exist)? If your answer to all or most of these questions was a “yes” then you might be a prime candidate for a version of Windows 10 called “LTSB” or “Long-Term Servicing Branch”. This editions intended use case would be critical applications in large businesses. It will only get thoroughly tested security patches, no annoying updates and will forever be on the feature-level of 1607 or the “Anniversary Edition”. It comes without edge, Cortana and even lacks an image viewer. More to that later. It has a special disk-check running at startup which saved my work after a power outage and gets all the features from the “Enterprise” editions of windows. You down? Wanna switch to LTSB? Try all this out in a VM first (I personally use hyper-v, if you don't have a windows pro version then you might wanna give VMware player a try). A few warnings: -this should only be done by more advanced users, you won't really find help on any issues which might be OS related as LTSB is almost strictly used by businesses who talk directly to Microsoft about any problems -not that many drivers come preinstalled (compared to the normal Win10), prepare to spend some time on the internet or even better; grab the latest drivers for all your devices and expansion cards beforehand -microsoft won't sell you a key to this os, more about that later though -as I mentioned before, no windows store Still here? Then let's get started! If you have a legit key of Windows 10 you should connect that with a Microsoft account ( see this article ) in case you'd like to go back to that. Now well start downloading LTSB, not from a Microsoft server but from a site called “The Eye” which is NOT a pirating site. This is completely legal. Windows 10 LTSB from “The Eye” After the download has finished, use Rufus (recommended by Linus) to create a bootable installer USB. If you have troubles getting the PC to boot from your created USB then reformat it and set Rufus to “DD”-mode, this fixed some issues I had myself. Now just install it like any other version of Windows 10. Deactivate the telemetry crap and create a local account. Done. Now over to some programmes I’d recommend: -ImageGlass, a very light yet powerful and versatile image viewer -SpyBot - anti beacon to remove the last bits of tracking -ClassicShell will add better windows search and will enable you to finetune the look of your taskbar. I’ve set mine to fully transparent, just beautiful! Now you are left with an unactivated copy of windows. This might be ok to some, you can just set desktop backgrounds by right-clicking the downloaded image, but others want the “full” experience. Sadly this is not easily possible as MSFT won't sell keys to LTSB to the average joe. Stay away from cracking programmes, please do. You just got a fresh install of Windows, why get malware all over it? Utilising small written lines of batch code that use licensing servers accessible by the public to activate windows is pretty easy. I find this morally ok as there is no way of buying this version and users with existing windows keys already gave Microsoft their money. If they would let me buy it, I would be happy to pay, but they won't. BE CAREFUL! If you find a way of doing this then you NEED to know what you are doing and you NEED to know what that batch file is doing. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS AS THIS IS BORDERLINE ILLEGAL Hope you enjoy your update-free windows experience!
  8. Hey guys, so I finally did the windows update it's been asking me to do but ever since I did, I can't play any game without it having a really low frame rate. Even easy to run games like Dota 2 or Smite won't run and games that I used to get 60+fps on are now running at around 20 fps. I checked all my drivers were up to date and I've checked my temperatures in case they had something to do with it but they're fine too. Here's my specs (Laptop): GTX 970M i7 4720HQ 16gb ram 1TB 7200RPM If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated!
  9. Hey, wanted to see if anyone here has suggestions before I resort to resetting Windows. The issue is with Windows 10 (64-bit) on my Gigabyte P57 (gtx 1070 and 7700HQ) laptop. I put off updating for a while because it always asks me to update in the middle of class, and today my computer crashed (blue screen with the :(). When it was restarting it said windows was updating, which I thought was a bit strange. Anyways, I decided I would finally update windows. The usual banner that shows up in the middle of my screen after a few minutes of being on did not show up, so I checked for updates manually. The update in question is https://bit.ly/2riJ4Jw (KB4093105) and my installed update history says it has been successfully installed (twice), but it also says it requires a restart to finish (7 times). Check for updates always thinks it up to date when I log back in, but after checking is says I don't have the Cumulative Update for Windows 10. Now for the strange parts. Every single time the update fails I have to log in twice. Yes, I type my password (correctly), hit enter, but instead loading my desktop, it loads that screen right before you enter your password. I enter my password a second time and it loads the desktop. Also, 2 times my keyboard stopped working, once before I was able to log in and once after I had been logged in for about a minute. One time my wireless mouse was not working, which was the same time my keyboard stopped working before I was able to log in. So, any ideas? Or should I just get on with the reset and re-installation of programs?
  10. Question for the forum, I have a laptop that only has official OEM support for Windows 8.1, and does not support Windows 10 (as SLI has been reported not to work when "upgrading" to Windows 10). I installed GWX Control Panel back when Windows 10 launched to keep Microsoft from pestering me to update and auto-downloading Windows 10 to my machine. I suppose my question is, what is the current state of the Windows update pestering? Will it still try to automatically force me to update to Windows 10 if I uninstall GWX CP?
  11. Hi, After latest Windows 10 update, HDD Sentinel reports 80% performance. Before update, performance was 100%. SSD is Samsung 860 Evo 250Gb. Also HDD Sentinel reports that TRIM is disabled but Samsung Magician reports that TRIM is enabled. Look at the attached pictures for more info. What is problem and what could be solution? Thanks in advance.
  12. Hello! I have a Hp pavilion dv6 laptop which I've been running Windows 10 for a long time now. However, today I installed the 2018 April update and i can no longer adjust the display brightness after that. The brightness is "stuck" all the way up. Can anyone please help me with this. Thanks.
  13. Hey guys, I've seen at least one other post about this problem but there wasn't really a fix in the comments, sooooo After this recent windows 10 update I got there's a new drive shown in the file explorer. It's a 449 mb drive with only 43.9 mb of free space. I'm really damn sure it's a virtual drive, since I haven't added any drive. Do they even make usb sticks that size nowadays? How do I get rid of this annoying little fella? I get a notification every 2-3 minutes that "the drive is full". It's really annoying.
  14. Hi guys, I've come across a problem that's driving me absolutely crazy. Coming here as my next option is to reinstall windows on all 5 windows PCs in the house, which would be bad. Following a large update on all machines last Thursday every machine in the house has pretty much lost the ability to connect to https domains in any browser, including embedded browsers. In Firefox the connection hangs on: "Performing a TLS Handshake with..." In Chrome the connection hangs on: "Establishing a secure connection..." Discord will often receive messages, but be unable to link to a voice channel or make a call Spotify will appear to be offline when started but stream music if I can get as far as my library, although it won't show album art Peer to Peer applications work perfectly, including Deluge and Steam (the steam store, embedded browser, workshop, etc all don't work) Pinging 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 both work as expected These problems are mirrored (although, oddly, to different severities) across all of the PCs in the house This blog post from Microsoft's Directory Services Escalation Team talks describes the general symptoms I've been having: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askds/2018/04/10/tls-handshake-errors-and-connection-timeouts-maybe-its-the-ctl-engine/ But having followed the suggested regedit changes nothing changes. I've ran a renew, a refresh, and a flush. Nada. I've tried automatic DNS selection, as well as using Google and OpenDNS, and that doesn't affect the issue. I've run a Netalyzer, here are the results: http://n1.netalyzr.icsi.berkeley.edu/summary/id=369839a0-22440-5bc3d0b8-e0d9-4f45-b60a I don't know exactly what to make of the results, we're really reaching the end of my networking know-how here. Any help is seriously appreciated. We've called our ISP and spoken at length to their techs who can't figure it out either. We've factory reset our router, gotten a new one sent over, factory reset THAT router. I'm convinced it's a problem with an update to how windows security certification works because it started immediately after the update on all machines, and ANY other operating system (linux distros, android, OSX, shitty smart TV OS) all work normally. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
  15. Hi, after i updated windows and started up, my cpu ran at 70c+ Then it just shutdown. I tried to start the PC, i got in then it shutdown, immediate black screen, no spinny shutdown ball. Even in BIOS the CPU runs at 70+ and shuts down after a while. If i let it cool i can get into windows then after 1 min ish it black screens and shuts down. I will let it cool down a bit then try to boot into safe mode, although I doubt it will help beacause it even shuts down in bios. I have tried: - Reseting BIOS - Plugging in and out PSU power chord - Turning PSU on/off PC specs: GPU: MSI Gtx 1070 Gaming X CPU: AMD Ryzen 1600x @ 3.6Ghz CPU-Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 RAM: Corsair Dominator Platinum 16gb 4x4gb @ 3000Mhz Mobo: Gigabyte GA-AX370 Gaming k5 SSD: Samsung 850evo 250gb HDD: Western Digital WD-Blue 1tb PSU: Corsair RMx 750watt OS: Windows 10 64bit Edit: I’m getting into windows for a while then it shuts down i think the problem is that my h100i pump failed. Although it is wierd that it failed excactly when i updated windows (overnight) oh well just bad luck i suppose. Going to buy an el cheapo CPU cooler to check if that is the problem. Edit-edit: It was the h100i. The pump failed
  16. So my Laptop updated by itself while I was at work and now my disk utilisation is sitting at 100% anyone else had this problem? seems every update I get causes a new problem. This isn't the first time this has happened either happened a couple of updates back and then suddenly fixed itself.
  17. NOT RESOLVED Hey LTT, TLDR How to force W10 to install just security patches? OR Read bolt olny DESCRIPTION i had a problem with W10 stability on "official patch" such as BSOD, performance loss, bugs, etc.. So i made something like "clean installation of w10" and modify it to be useble. This modification solved almost all problems with W10 that i had, but there's one problem with which i need help. PROBLEM The problem is that i have to keep Windows Update service disabled to prevent it from auto-updates which will cause instability again (tested), but i need security patches for things like spectre/meltdown etc.. TRIED SOLUTION Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Configure Automatic Updates. Doen't work, its not specified for W10. You can set your internet connection to metered and it won't download anything unless you tell it to. As far as i know metered connection can't be set for ethernet in W10 GUI so i followed this guide: LINK I restart PC and check for updates > it started to download updates. Doesn't work. SOLUTION My current solution is to enable Windows Update service and let it download > locate its directory > save it on server > load backup > install it manually. This solution is too uneffective so i hope you can suggest something better. FAQ What's ideal solution? Ideal solution is to just chose Windows Update to download using Windows GUI. Why don't you just use latest version of Windows 10? latest version is for my work practically unuseble.. on my modification i never had BSOD or anything that could ruin my experience. Thanks for any help! --- LW: • i tried to search for this topic on LTT and haven't found it > i created this one. • I chosed Operating Systems > Windows, because it seems to me as closest thread to this topic.
  18. Hi, I just noticed that my Cpu is variating in core clocks even though I've manually overclocked my Ryzen 7 1700 to 3.9 gigahertz successfully! If you look at the picture below you can see my coreclock sitting at 3.62 gigahertz! What is causing this? Thank you for any help provided! Specs: Ryzen 7 1700 Asus x370-prime mobo 500-watt psu from corsair Gtx 1070 armored OC from Msi 16 gigabytes of ddr4 clocked at 2993

  20. Hi guys, I have an EVGA gtx 970 SC that was OC'd to +50mhz on clock and +450mhz on memory. I also have my ryzen 1600X OC'd to 3.9Ghz @1.375v The title says it all. Had a GPU overclock that was rock stable for months, only to have it crash after my creators update (which i was forced into!). Had to dial it down considerably to +40 on core and +350 on memory. Anyone had anything similar happen? Any advice?
  21. Please keep in mind the next 3 issues seem to be connected. So today i decided to restart my computer while trying to fix a harddrive issue (i will get into it later. So instead of updating as usual, it went to a screen saying “scanning and repairing drive”. I thought, alright, maybe this is a good thing. I came back 15 minutes later to see it at 32%, then came back 2 hours later to see it still at 32%. So my immediate problem is getting my computer past this screen. The issue i was TRYING to resolve was the system program suddenly using 99.5% of my disk space while playing games and in idle. So i guess that is my second problem. I have already disabled superfetch and windows shell host, and nothing seems to fix it. My third and FINAL problem is a program known as “wmi provider host” constantly using around 12% of my pentium g3258 @ 4.3 ghz. The last 2 issues have been going on for months. specs: intel pentium @ 4.3 ghz Zotac 750 ti 2gb asus h81m-a coolermaster hyper 212 evo evga 500w 1tb seagate hdd
  22. So yesterday windows 10 decided to do a big update, the one where it reinstalls the os. Everything seemed fine, but then I realized that my 2 monitor setup stopped working. It was set as "duplicate" where monitor 2 was the main display and 1 was the secondary. In DISPLAY SETTINGS I tried to set it back to duplicate or extend or show only on 1 (it shows only on 2) bit with no success: It looks loke windows is doing that and it pops up the regular "do you want to keep settings or revert" thingy, but it actually just leaves monitor 2 as the only display. Also, the "make this my main diaplay" is grayed out. I tried installing new latest nvidia deiver using DDU, rolling back to older driver, nothing changed. Only thing helping is plugging out the cable of one of the diaplays. Then i can get the one that i want to work and exchange if I want by plugging out the other cable. What now???
  23. Hello. I have very strange problem. I was sure I fixed it but it is back. So. I had problem with MB screen didn't show so I couldn't enter BIOS when I didn't have it. I had to wait some time to enter BIOS. I couldn't enter safe mode too, when I tried PC shut down every time I tried. So I reinstalled Windows, formatted all drives. Problem was gone. Motherboard screen was there everytime I launched my PC, no matter how long I waited and I had no problems with entering safe mode. Today I installed Windows 10 1709 update and here I come again. Almost full clean system, just Origin, Steam, Battlenet and Mozilla installed and same problem again. I'm sick of it and I will not lie I'm almost crying What can cause those problems?
  24. !!New Problem!! My games are running, I am browsing the internet pretty smoothly, streaming, facebooking all with out any problems or issues. I am using a dedicated IP as well. But none of these apps (Steam, Uplay, Epic Games, Battle Net) are connecting to the internet. I actually deleted all of my storage, formatted all storage drives, created new partitions and installed WIndows to get rid of this problem permanently. But OMG this problem is persistent and I have no idea why this is happening. When I was installing WIndows, I was doing that with a boot ready USB flash that had an older version of Windows 10. Everything was working fine (Steam, Uplay, Epic Games started working properly) until the Windows started updating itself. When it updated itself to the latest version, the problems re-appeared. I noticed that one of the virus protection definition was not installed and was getting obstructed with an error code. But I managed to fix that. But the game launcher softwares continue to persist with the connectivity problem. At this point, I am guessing that everything works fine on the older version of Windows 10. The problem occurs on the newer version. But this can't be the actual cause of the problem as thousands of people are using the softwares on latest version of WIndows 10 without any issues. I really need some advice on this. I also tried looking up the "Error code - 21" that is popping up in steam but barely anything comes up in Google or Youtube. I contacted Steam help center and they mentioned its a network issue. But I don't know WHAT is the issue with my network because everything else is working fine and the games are running online as well. Seeking for some advice.........!!!
