I was here trying to setup a program to enable multiple desktops on Windows 8, until it told me that a few hotkeys were already reserved... Namely Windows + any number/function key. So I decided to see what these did. To my surprise, pressing the Windows button and a number opened a program in my taskbar, with the number corresponding to the position it is in (Just tried numpad keys and those don't work). While I'm here I might as well mention a few more windows life-hacks that I know. Control button + Click = multiple select Shift + Click = select all files between two points Control + A = Select all files Control + Tab = Flip between browser tabs (Firefox, might work in chrome) Control + Esc = Opens the start menu. Another excuse to disable your windows button for gaming ;P WinKey + W = Search (Win8) Some basic ones EVERYONE should know WinKey + L = lock PC Control + C = Copy (On the command line, it means close) Control + V = Paste Control + X = Cut WinKey + M = Minimise all windows (Great for PornHub ) Alt + Tab = switch open windows (Windows 7) WinKey + Tab = Flip windows in a fancy way if Aero is enabled. Doesn't work on Win8.

Hi everyone. I recently formatted my laptop, and installed Windows 8 from a CD (the harddrive was completely formatted before installing). The installation of WIndows succeded, but when the computer would restart, it would just go into some kind of boot loop. The screen would flash a couple of times and the fan would spin, and then stop.... And then repeat it infinitely. I found out though, that if I force it to turn off (by holding the turn-on/off on the pc down for a while), and then boot in to the BIOS/UEFI and choose Windows Bootloader in "Boot Override" (Or something like that), it boots into Windows just fine. My question is, how can I fix this? The #1 boot priority is already set to Windows, so that shouldn't be the problem, right? I'd also like to know if there's a way, that I can make my PC load the BIOS/UEFI everytime it turns on. Like just opening the BIOS when pressing the start button. Thanks a lot, Chrissy. (My laptop is an Asus r551l if it's to any use)

Alright so I have an installation disk for windows 8 that allows me to upgrade to 8.1 for free through the store but I don't know when to install my mb and GPU drivers . Should I install the drivers on 8 and then do my required windows updates and install 8.1 or should I update, install 8.1 then install the drivers?

About a week ago i tried to get 64 bit chrome, flash player and java, and i thought that i got it, but it actually made my games and desktop have serious fps drop every 2 min or so. So i decided to reinstall the 32 bit and delete/uninstall the 64 bit version. Once i knew i didn't have the 64 bit versions i tried my games still no luck. Now i have reinstalled windows 8.1 and i discovered a new app that comes with my motherboard installation disk so i tried it, and the app was easytune and i tried it out cause i wanted to know if the settings i used was recommended and the overclock speed of my CPU that i did was recommended and it said it could go to 5.8GHz (also this program sets it for you) and i know my pc can't do that cause i have overclocked mine to 4GHz and when i put it to 4.2GHz computer goes on a boot loop and when its on 4.1GHz it can't handle a heavy load. (PC Specs below btw) Once i did a couple of restarts of my pc (for the program) and it crash cause of the extreme overclock so i put it back to 4GHz manully and then when i launched windows again i noticed that my icons and apps took a long time to load, but never when i just started my pc only when i restarted (also it could have been happening before easytune but i wasn't paying attention at that time). So even though i know this isn't recommended i reinstalled windows 8 AGAIN then upgraded to windows 8.1 then installed my drivers (motherboard/GPU/CD/Printer) and there it was again when i restarted and its been like this ever since (aslo i don't restart often). It takes ages for it to load and it never happened before i tried to install 64 bit chrome. I don't know how to fix this or reduce the waiting time cause i have tried disabling startup items. Please help me fix this i am a bit of a perfectionist in my computers so i want this thing fixed and perfect. Also i have another question same topic and area when i install windows 8 and upgrade to windows 8.1 through the store do i install my drivers on 8 or 8.1? Thanks in advanced PC Specs: Motherboard - Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z5S CPU - Intel 4670K overclocked to 4GHz GPU - Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 760 2gb RAM - GSkill F3-2133C10D-16GAB Power Supply - Thermaltake 750w Smart Power 80+ Bronze SSD - Sandisk Ultra11 240gb HDD - Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 Water Cooler - NZXT Kraken X61 280mm OS - Windows 8.1

Hello, I am in the process of selecting the parts for my first ever build, but I cannot decide on the operating system. I am torn between Windows 7 and 8. I will be gaming, coding, and editing videos on my computer, so I want the best OS for that. I should probably mention that I am new to Windows as well. Responses much appriceated. Thanks.

Hey guys! Recently something really weird happened. I built a new PC about a month ago, and everything was all fine and dandy. I then decided to install an AIO water cooling solution for my GPU using the NZXT Kraken G10, and that's fine and dandy too. But ever since then, my HDD stopped being recognized. At first I thought I might of bumped my PC too hard and killed it, but after plugging it into one of my older builds, it worked fined. It works in the external drive dock I have too. Of course, I can use my disk like this, but I'd really prefer to have it INSIDE my PC (less cables to worry about). So after verifying that it does indeed work (with the drive dock I bought) I decided to reinstall it into my PC. I have switched SATA data cables, SATA ports, and SATA power ports, but it refuses to show up in Windows. BIOS finds it just fine, but it is nowhere to be seen. Even in my Disk Manager, it won't show up (even after rescanning...) Any help would be much appreciated. Again, I can just chuck it into my drive dock, but since it's a Mini ITX build (built to save space), It kind of defeats the whole purpose of my build to use additional space, power outlets, and USB ports just for my HDD. On a side note, could this be a power issue? Though it only uses 740mA on the 12V rail...

I have had boot problems problems ever since installing a game that runs DirectX 9 on my PC. This has happened before! Help! my windows 8.1 PC has recently started to shut off at random times. This started yesterday. I have tried repairs in windows with no luck. I had the same problem earlier (~a month ago) when I installed Bioshock 1, 2, and Infinite, the crashing went away with one repair. I installed GTA IV and about an hour and a half in, it crashed. I got it to start to repair, but as soon as it started to initialize, it went into a weird reboot loop. I'm not sure it's windows because it starts and stops working before I even see the motherboard logo. I sometimes get a blue screen to help me repair, but most of the time when it successfully boots, I actually go into windows. Today I have noticed that it shuts off when I use the mouse or keyboard. I have used repair about 5 times! the most recent time, it asked me if I wanted to revert to before the previous repair, leading me to believe that it removed something critical. During the previous repair it said that a couple mouse and keyboard drivers were the problem. The first time it brought up the blue screen, it said the problem was DirectX 9, I believe Bioshock 1 uses that as well. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO PLEASE HELP!!! I cannot get into the computer. Does this sound like it's my SSD that is the problem, windows, or other hardware. I desperately need help. I know I can't use a recovery USB drive because you have to download it from the computer (Which makes no since Microsoft says here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-usb... that you can use it if you cant't get in, and I know it says to make one before problems), I had a random power flicker on my device while plating Gang Beasts about a week ago. We had a PS4, my computer, 2 monitors, and speakers on a power strip (possibly overloaded it), do you think this caused it? PLEASE HELP!!! Hi everyone, I was just wondering if any of you know of a way to get the colour (color) schemes from Windows 8/8.1 into windows 10. I really enjoy the light blue colour on windows 8 however it seems that it's not available in 10. Thanks in advance

I custom built my computer a little over a month ago and at first, I had a lot of trouble getting my mic to work (but after hours of tinkering with settings, I got it to work somehow). I have the Beats Studio Wireless and since my computer currently does not have bluetooth, I use the cord with the mic on it. I have a audio splitter cable to split the audio in from my mic and the audio out from my computer, so my one cord now is split to plug into a Headphone Jack and Mic Jack. Today I returned my Beats and got a new pair of the exact same kind, but now my mic does not work no matter what I try. Oddly enough though, the only thing it can hear is me pressing buttons on the mic, nothing else. Not tapping the mic, not talking, nothing. RealTek is the audio program that I use since it is used for my mobo (MSI Z97A Gaming 7). I have boosted all the mic sounds everywhere, made sure everything is unmuted, but still no luck. All programs that use my mic have the correct option selected, but no sound is coming through. Help would be very appreciated

Hey everyone, I have an msi gs60 ghost pro. Technically, it is a cyberpower fangbook edge, but they are one in the same. I was able to get an upgraded intel i7 to go in the laptop which has the intel iris pro 5200 graphics. Every time I set the scaling to 100% instead of the recommend default of 125% (so that stuff actually looks HD on my external 1080p monitor) I get really low frame rates. The laptop's screen is only 1080p so the 125% scaling looks terrible. I think it might have something to do with the windows overlays being rendered by the intel graphics while the rest is managed by the gtx970m. I am, however, not sure. At 125% scaling frame rates seem normal. I benchmarked with furmark and i got 60fps at 125% scaling but when i moved it down to 100% i was barely pushing 15 frames. This is the same case with other high performance applications that switch to the nvida graphics such as gta V, league of legends, 3dmark, etc. In short i can get good frame rates if windows looks like a giant blurry turd and bad frame rates when it looks normal. I would prefer to fix this without disabling the integrated graphics from a core level. Preferably, i would want only nvidia graphics when I am plugged into my external monitor. Also, I have tried going into the .exe properties and disabling scaling per program with the same results.

I have a Lenovo keyboard, specifically one that came with a Lenovo Yoga tablet. I'm currently using it via bluetooth on my Windows 8 system, but the windows key (android key?) doesn't respond and many of the FN keys are either non-responsive or incorrectly labelled. Is there any way to get into the devices functionality and change some of the keys? I plan on buying a Windows specific keyboard soon, but until then I'm trying to get by with this little thing.

Hey, So ive just built a new PC and im currently in need of a Windows 8 Key. I dont have the money to spend $100 on windows although i really wish i could. So basically in a little bit I will be building a computer. I currently own a laptop with windows 8.1. If I were to upgrade to windows 10 I could transfer the OS to the new computer, however I will be giving someone else the laptop. If I take windows 10 off the laptop will one of the versions be unauthenticated? I heard that even illegitimate copies of windows 7 and 8 will be getting a free upgrade to windows 10. If I transfer the 8.1 OS to the new system and one of the OS's are illegitimized by this, could I upgrade to windows 10 to get a full legit copy? Any explanation of the USB installation process could help as well.

I resently built a new computer with windows 8 on it (specs below) and everything ran great for some time. Until I moved the system across the room, idk if I shut it down incorrectly or what but won't boot (it would occasionally boot up but mostly gave a black screen with a blinking underscore in the top left corner) into windowsome anymore, I've tried about every windows utility , but nothing has worked . After the first 2 or 3 boots it goes back to the black screen. I've also wiped the ssd and reinstalled windows clean, didn't work, (when windows runs , it is slow on and off ) how can I get this thing to boot in a stable manor ? Greetings! I have a Lenovo Y510p laptop, and the Hard Drive is : ST1000LM014-1EJ164. I'm not sure if it's just really sh*t, or if it is windows or another program is causing the problem. I have set a custom Page file size, didn't seem to do anything. I have also disabled Superfetch and Windows Scearch processes, it didn't solve the problem either, it just made the 100% spikes intermittent. It happens randomly where the highest transfer rates are at 3.9 MB/s. This is slowing my computer down terribly. I'm thinking of buying a Western Digital Back² drive(A drive Linus reviewed a while back), if I can't solve this.

I actually ran into this memory leak issue a while back when I first built my current computer and installed Windows 8.1. After getting everything up and running, I couldn't figure out what was consuming 16GB of RAM. A reboot would fix it, but it kept re-occurring every other day or so. Finally I got to the bottom of it, and it turned out to be a compatibility issue with the Killer E2200 NIC and the Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring driver (NDU). Well I just recently reloaded the OS with a brand new clean install, and the issue re-occurred. I didn't think about sharing my findings back then, but because i just went through it again, I thought I might give people a heads up in case they are having similar issues. Here it is in a Knowledge Base type format: --- Applies To: Windows 8, Windows 8.1 Computers with motherboards featuring the Killer E2200 NIC Symptoms: Computers running Windows 8 with the Killer Ethernet E2200 NIC may experience poor performance due to high memory utilization. Heavy network usage such as downloading large files, or streaming media can accelerate the issue, causing games, applications, and the operating system itself to perform poorly. After a reboot, the system operates normally until the issue re-occurs. Cause: The Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring Driver is a kernel mode driver that was introduced with Windows 8. This driver is apparently incompatible with some specific NIC drivers including the Killer E2200 NIC, as well as some Realtek NICs. Heavy data usage causes this driver to consume available system non-paged memory until there is no more available. Resolution: Disable the Windows Network Data Usage Monitoring Driver (NDU) by performing the following steps: Open the registry editor by right-clicking on the Windows Start Button, select Run, and type regedit. Click OK. Warning, per Microsoft: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious, system-wide problems that may require you to re-install Windows to correct them. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use this tool at your own risk. In the left-hand pane, expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SYSTEM > ControlSet001 > Services and select Ndu. In the right-hand pane, double-click on the "Start" key and change the value to 4. Close the registry editor and reboot your computer.

So for starters, my computer is a dual boot system with both W7, and W8.1. So today we tried switching cases and we got everything working, but for some reason windows 7 boots perfectly and windows 8.1 will get caught in an infinite boot cycle. All files are still accessible through windows 7 so the drive isnt completely corrupt. Anybody have any idea what might be going on?

I tried to boot my laptop that has windows 8.1 on with a ubuntu live CD. I did some editing on it and now if I try to boot into windows it says recovery can't be found and gives me an error 0xc0000225. I have googled for hours and the regular fixes just don't do it. If I connect it to another PC I can see all my data there(I did back up) but when I boot the same error comes up. I'm 99% sure that the HDD is locked so how can I unlock it. HELP!
-
Ok, first off the error itself, the machine isnt throwing any codes but rather going back and forth between the desktop and the windows 8 metro application thingy (you know that thing everyone hated), so the pc is completely useless, i dont have the cash for a new windows os (if anyone has a code that would be awsome), but the only thing i use it for is a pyton/html workstation so im compltely fine with throwing ubuntu on it and calling it a day. Im not new to linux as my gaming pc is running ubuntu, but the boot usb wont load ubuntu, i would love to just format the drive using a bios something or other, but im a super noob 16 year old who dosent know shit. Laptop model is a compaq cq58 if its at all important. Any help would be extremely appreciated and i wouldnt mind throwing some csgo skins your way either (dont get your hopes up its like 50cents maybe).

Specs and Peripheral of the PC in question: http://imgur.com/a/NTTaO So I am trying to get my 3d printer to install the arduino drivers, and I am coming across a problem with installing them by browsing through device manager and updating drivers. The driver that came with it is unsigned so most internet guides have said to follow these steps 1. PC settings and advanced boot 2. Go to troubleshoot and advanced - startup settings 3. Reboot and then choose (7) install unsigned drivers So I can use my keyboard to select advanced and reboot to the screen from step 3, but at this stage I would need to type with the keyboard either 7 or f7, and none of the keyboards I have tried have worked. So far I have used a PS/2 Keyboard and 2 USB keyboards in various ports. I have turned on full initial support of USB in bios, but still cannot select any options in the aforementioned menu. Any and all help is appreciated.

I'm trying to do a clean install of windows 8 on a family member's Dell inspiron. I complete the windows 8 installation without problems untill I see "gettings devices ready", at around 76-80% through - It cuts to a blue screen with the error message "driver_power_state_failure". I can't find anyone having the same issue while doing a clean install, most people get this error message upgrading from windows 7. I've tried many things, but I don't want to risk ruling anything out, so if you guys have any idea of what I should try I would very much appriecate it.
