Watching the WAN show and someone asked them why the jacket has a left hand zipper. She is completely right on this being wrong. For a unisex jacket it needs to be a right hand zipper. Pants and shirts worn by men must all be made with the buttons and zippers on the right side with a belt feeding into the left side. With it always on the same side this creates what is called a gig line. Mens clothing is never made in contradiction to this rule. Anytime I ever see a man wearing his belt the wrong direction or wearing something with the buttons or zippers on the other side I will immediately notice. A uniform made for women is the opposite with the buttons and zippers on the left and the belt feeding into the right side. Only with a uniform are women meant to follow this rule. For regular female clothing there is no rule and their clothes can be made either in the male or female fashion. I have never once in my life had clothing that contradicted this rule. If I were to put on a jacket that had the zipper on the left side I would immediately notice and would think that it was made for women.

I couldn't find the WAN show post so I'm just doing this here. I want to share my thoughts on some comments Linus made during the last WAN show and I want to know what you all think too. About Linus’ thoughts on Tesla: About being right to wait to get on the EV bandwagon: I think waiting to get an EV isn’t a problem, the technology still has a long way to before they are leaps and bounds ahead of traditional gasoline powered vehicles. But, what Linus said about a future where there will be a lot of competition and getting something, “really sweet for a lot less” isn’t going to be viable for a while longer. Though Rivian has a great prototype, they are a new company and will have the growing pains that new companies have. They will have to learn about production and work out the bugs that come along with it which will take a while. Not to mention they need to secure viable battery production before they can become competitive. This all ignores the fact that when it first launches, the R1-T and R1-S won’t be competitively priced. I would say that traditional automaker’s EV’s are even further behind Rivian because of their amount of investment into their technology. Even when there are more EV’s on the market in the future, Tesla’s cars are already close to competitive so the prices dropping even lower isn’t likely. Bottom line, the competitive EV world that Linus mentioned won’t be around for a long long time. So long in fact that waiting for it would be unbearable. Regarding the problems Linus has with the way Tesla does things: 1) Right to repair. Linus has a good point here. Tesla is not the best when it comes to “right to repair” and they’re not great when it comes to doing the repairs themselves. One major complaint I have with them is that they don't let their own authorized partner garages pre-order parts in advance to anticipate future customers’ problems. Instead, Tesla requires that the customer’s vehicle must come into the shop and inspected before a list of parts can be ordered from Tesla. This slows down the repair process and makes it a hassle to deal with. They have a long way to go in the way of convenience when it comes to repairing their own vehicles. I would also like to see them release schematics and make parts available for ordering online but they may not want to allow parts to go out for repair freely because they would rather use them to make new vehicles instead of repairing existing ones. 2) “Hardware as a service”. Linus’ comment about the most recent update being a, “paid update” is partially false. It is not a required update, it’s an optional performance upgrade. No one is being forced to pay for it, nor are they being forced to pay for security or essential updates. I don’t think anyone knows what the right solution is, but why shame them for trying? Using a slippery slope argument is a terrible argument for reasons I shouldn’t have to go into. I understand your frustration that the hardware has the ability to perform better but is locked due to software. This frustration is understandable but irrational. Making the extra performance a simple software update is advantageous in several ways: it makes the car more affordable and easier for consumers to get their hands on, production can be streamlined because they do not need to produce separate differentiated hardware, people can upgrade in the future if they want once they have the money. In the end, using software to differentiate products is beneficial to all parties involved. Your frustration is irrational. 3) Marketing. The word, “auto pilot” is just a name. Anything that someone would assume from the name and not what it does should be the blame when something bad happens, not the product. Users agree to the terms before they use Auto Pilot. Any mis-use of the product thereafter is due to the user’s misunderstanding and irresponsibility. It does not give anyone a, “false sense of security” because it never claims to be level five. Any misunderstanding is the fault of the individual, not Tesla. People or legislators who fear autonomous driving will always be a part of the equation. Even if Tesla called Auto Pilot something else, or even if they didn’t release it, people would still be against it. There is no getting around it so it isn’t a valid argument. The thing that Linus seems to not fully grasp is how much data level 5 autonomy requires. Linus said he wants, “a level 5 autonomous vehicle as soon as possible,” but his idea of hiding away the technology until its ready and flawless is completely unreasonable. It’s a paradox to get it as fast as possible and have it hidden away from the real world. Google had taken ten years to be able to drive in one part of a city. That’s far too slow. The, “long tail” requires an unthinkable amount of data and minute cases that only an implementation like Auto Pilot can collect in a reasonable amount of time. Anyone who fears all of autonomous driving because of an incident at a lower level had a fundamental misunderstanding of the technology and shouldn't be taken seriously. This technology will not be made illegal, thinking this way is letting irrational fears get the best of you.

With Christmas being next week I thought it would be cool if the wan show featured some slightly different news. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.standard.co.uk/showbiz/celebrity-news/could-ladbaby-actually-be-christmas-number-1-2018-with-we-built-this-city-on-sausage-rolls-a4023791.html%3famp This is a guy from Nottingham in England who has decided to create a song for numerous food banks in the UK. I believe it is currently number 2 in the UK charts by featuring it in the wan show you're effectively helping to feed the UK, with all the drama of Brexit and Google potentially stopping us getting the free app due to the daft European commission we need this song to number 1 to help those who cannot afford to buy food for the family at home.

Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong section or not allowed in some fashion. Two weeks ago, there was a link to a competition to win a Jord watch on the WAN Show found here: After entering (and not winning) said competition, they did in fact send a $50 discount code which I will not be using Per the e-mail, Jord said it was fine if the code was shared with someone who will make use of it. So if anyone here was thinking of getting a Jord watch, here's a $50 off discount code: dead link removed

Samsung was caught advertising the samsung note 9 while on an apple iphone. The worst part is that this isn't the first time this has happened to a smart phone company, also happened to Huawei. https://www.slashgear.com/samsung-tweets-from-iphone-to-promote-the-galaxy-note-9-02556566/ Any thoughts on this?

Full article here: https://www.extremetech.com/electronics/280986-google-patents-wheeled-vr-shoes Google has patented VR shoes so that people can “walk” around without really going anywhere. This is kind of like the treadmill things in Ready Player One. This honestly sounds awesome ‘cause it’ll kill 2 birds with one stone: playing video games and exercising at the same time :) . Please put this in the Wan Show, want to hear Linus’s thoughts on this

Has Linus ever explained how he uses an Apple watch even though he doesn't daily an iPhone? Heard him mention it in the latest WAN Show and would like to know how feasible it is for me to do the same.

I use float plane for all videos but when I miss the WAN show live can we get it uploaded to floatplane as well? I don't want to use youtube if I can choose not to.

I just remembered that linus and luke used to make fun of squarespace's motto in old wan shows. Does anyone remember what it was? It driving me insane. I think it started with "just"

Hello, I don't know if Linus will see this, I will be thankful if a mod or so hints him to this, because I don't know what the correct way is. Watched the VoD of WAN Show on Youtube (different timezone, WAN Show is too late for me), wanted to share some experience about Magix and why Intel probably picked it for the marketing slides. Magix is a producer of software for audio and video editing. Several years ago I bought Magix Video Deluxe, to have something to edit family videos with, without losing sanity while using Windows Movie Maker. On itself it was fine, used all threads from consumer grade CPUs, easy to use UI and most of the world was sitting for some years on 4C/8T, so that no one cared. Several years later AMD shocked the industry with Zen and consumer grade 8C/16T CPUs. I bought an 1800X and used if for different things, one of it was to edit a video. Finished the edit, clicked on "Export" and waited to see how small the needed time will be. After a minute I was worried, that I did an error somewhere, because the remaining time was only couple % lower compared to my old CPU. Task-Manager showed only 50% utilization, maybe my target HDD went bad and slowed it down. Checked the HDD, it was fine according to SMART and transfer speeds in file explorer were fine. After not knowing what to do, I remembered that I could something use, that should work perfectly fine: ffmpeg. Took the original video, let ffmpeg convert it and saw 100% utilization together with the earlier expected remaining time for the export. Something had to be wrong with Magix Video Deluxe. Looked through the options and found the parameter, with which a user can limit the number of used CPU cores for an export. Played with it around to get the confirmation, that the software it self has a hard cap off 8C/8T. The version I had was a bit old, so installed the test version of the current release, but it had the same behaviour. After that, I searched their forum and found some threads asking my question. Together with the information from support, both had been kindly phrased, the intentional answer was:"Go and buy Intel Scrooge McDuck, they are superior with their QuickSync, we [Magix] don't care about core count!" Maybe because of that Magix had been listed in the marketing slides from Intel Don't know if Magixs' more expensive suits work better, but they lost me as a customer. I tried out their Magixs' Vegas, which they bought from Sony and worked as hoped. It used all 16 threads too, like ffmpeg. But with such an attitude, they will not so money from me ever again. Sincerely, GTrash81

Hello, I know what's causing Linus' OBS to crap out like that, the CPU's getting overburdened by requests, to confirm that, you need Moo0 System Monitor (it's software I use myself, for a minimalist stats monitor and not affiliated in any way), which is the only one that I know of at least that has "CPU Loader", that will show you what's getting too many requests, on my system, it's usually 1 of my many chrome tabs that just fills that "CPU Loader" bar, when it does, chrome's just unusable, everything else still works as it should. R7 1700X and to make it easier on us, if you want to know more about my specs, you can check: https://equallyepic.weebly.com/frozdypcspecs.html Unfortunately and I'm sorry I don't have a way to solve it, but at least you now know the of the most probable cause. Maybe a future video? This only started to become an issue in 2020, I don't have the resources to research these things, all I know is that this wasn't a thing for me at least in 2019.

The old episodes of WAN show podcast (https://linustechtips.libsyn.com/wanshow) are missing on podcast apps (Pocket Casts, AntennaPod, Podcast Addict etc., only Spotify has them). The newest episode available is the one from August 24, 2018. I found out about this when trying to listen to the Collab podcast which featured Louis Rossmann. Why is it so? Can it be fixed?

Greetings! I hope this doesn't come off as a complaint, it's more of a criticism: WAN Show podcast uploads to Soundcloud are SUPER borked. I of course don't listen to it on Soundcloud, but use an RSS feed of it that I found on the forums at some point, plugged into Overcast. However, the uploads to Soundcloud (and iTunes too actually) are often days later than even the YouTube upload, are usually uploaded twice, often have the wrong album art, and many times they've accidentally uploaded the wrong audio file! Here are my two suggestions: • Clean up and correct the uploads and schedule • Provide an official link to the RSS feed (I had to go pretty deep into the forum to find that one) Just thought I'd bring this up. Thanks for an awesome podcast!

When I saw that linus made a podcast I was pretty excited. And, since I use apple podcasts I searched it there. It was there. But noone in LMG mentions anything about it. So is there an imposter uploading it or is it legit
-
Not sure if it's intended, but I just searched "LinusTechTips" into the google podcasts app on a whim and saw the WAN Show available, didn't know about it, but I wonder, are the shows uploaded to the app by LMG or is it auto-magical stuff google is doing? sorry if this doesn't belong here

Hi all, The WAN show is one of my favourite podcasts that I regularly listen to and I'm sure I share that sentiment with many thousands of other listeners. The hosts seem to genuinely enjoy discussing the latest tech topics with one another and the occasional frank perspective offered by people 'in the biz' can add enormously to a developing news story. It is pretty unfortunate then that the publication of the audio only version of the WAN show (i.e. on Soundcloud or ITunes) is often delayed until the middle of the following week. Yes, the Youtube version is available, but that can't be downloaded in advance and it can't be played in the background on a mobile device with the screen off. For these reasons it is essential to have a dedicated audio-only download and to have it be timely when its for a show based on the latest news stories. So my question is: Can we please get earlier releases of the WAN show on Soundcloud and ITunes (particularly the latter as it is sourced by many popular podcasting apps)? Thanks for your attention!

I've recently wanted to listen to the WAN Show as a podcast on Spotify. All of July's episodes are there but August's aren't. Can someone please explain what is wrong? Is it me or have LTT given up on Spotify? Side note: I don't know if I'm writing this in the correct place so tell me and I'll move it to the correct place.

A while back- like, a month or two? Maybe more? I can't remember exactly- someone on the WAN Show mentioned that Windows 10 has been gradually getting worse over the past few updates, or something, and that there were two ways to make it better: Either go back to 8.1, or enable... something. I can't remember what that thing is. It was something like... some alternate version of Win10, I think? I can't remember the episode, I can't remember who said it (I think it was Luke, but I'm not 100% sure), and I can't remember when in the show it was said. Can someone here, who's got a better memory than I, please either tell me what the solution was or just point me to the right timestamp of the right WAN Show episode?

@LinusTech WAN show is on while I'm at work, so I've never been able to catch it live on twitch. I download the audio track from YouTube and digest it as a podcast while I'm driving. I might be the only one. Whatever. I'm a floatplane subscriber. Floatplane is broken for me right now, but that's a different story, and I already sent an email about that. I'd like to be able to grab a download of the audio track from the WAN show directly from floatplane. Is there a way to support that? Since I've never been able to catch the show live, I've never caught the after party. Can we start getting these somewhere? I know twitch only lets you keep so many recordings, so that's probably out, but what about putting them on YouTube, or Floatplane? What about some other podcasts? I mean you're already set up for all of the wonderful videos, why not leave the lens cap on and don't worry about pictures for a bit?
