Summary Free VPN providers found to be storing user data and tracking their online activity Quote “The vpnMentor research team, led by Noam Rotem, uncovered the server and found Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data for potentially over 20 million VPN users, according to claims of user numbers made by the VPNs” My thoughts Nothing in the world is free anymore. If it’s “free” that means that you and your data are the product being sold and bought. Summary Hong Kong based UFO VPN exposed millions of log files about users of its service, including their account passwords and IP addresses, despite claiming that it keeps no logs. My thoughts Mandatory by government perhaps? or just a chineese government business? Sources https://www.comparitech.com/blog/vpn-privacy/ufo-vpn-data-exposure/

Hi guys, recently I set up a VPN on my Windows 10 PC. It is working, I can log in and on the both client and server side it says that I am connected. I just wonder how can I share a folder from server side and map a network drive on the client's side only via VPN, not LAN. I tried to insert server's address in the drive mapping menu on client's side like: \\192.168.0.200\folder_name and 192.168.0.200\folder_name and server_pc_name\folder_name, but none of them work. The Windows "network" tab in the file explorer of client couldn't find the server PC either. I don't know if it is some kind of Windows 10 firewall thing or that i need to set up a port redirecting on my router. Thanks in adv. If you need extra info which isn't included in the descriptions, let me know in comments.

Recently, my ISP has decrease my maximum bandwidth and I've been looking for ways to maintain my data consumption while staying within the new margins. One idea I had was to set up a personal VPN server on one of my existing cloud servers and compress the data sent between my home network and the server. But, I have no idea where to start. I've set up OpenVPN servers for personal use before but I don't know how I would add compression to that. My server is running Debian 10.4 if that helps.

Hey all, I am looking to get a vpn app that runs on Android and PC. PIA is a big no since the government managed to block their entire website and their app won't even start. Btw, they are the only VPN provider that is completely locked and can only access their site via another VPN. Or maybe the pia bastards don't care about us IDK. I looked at surfshark, they have pretty positive reviews but their marketing and website is very scammy and the fact that nobody knows who those people are scares me. Internet access is being monitored here (north Africa) and the only free and safe way i found is tor but it is horribly slow. I am willing to pay maybe 25 usd for a year and I don't mind paying 50 for 2 years or whatever for at least 5 users. But i simply can't afford more than that. What do you guys recommend?

I have a VPN tunnel set up so I can access my home network from anywhere else. Simple setup through PFsense. I have 4 devices (Proxmox server, FreeNAS, Plex, Nextcloud) that I need to reach through the VPN. All of their IPs are static and saved by the DHCP server on PFsense. 3 of them I can reach no problem through the tunnel, but I cannot ping, ssh, or access the WebUI for Proxmox. All of them are in the same IP range 192.168.0.0/24, and the tunnel connects to this same address range. Things I have tried: Changing the IP (was originally 0.3, changed to 0.103 and 0.203 with no luck) wireshark pcap said network traffic (No useable data as it's encrypted in the VPN) recreating the VPN over a different port (no change) Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I'm happy to take any assistance or ideas you may have.

So, I have this strange case with one worker at one of my clients, which I can't figure out. They are using Surface Pro 6 Tablets with dockingstation at the company and without at home doing home office. We set up a VPN connection which works fine for 10+ workers except one. At this one surface, the network drives (mapped via GPO) tend to not show up. This can be solved by restarting the tablet several times (first time never worked so far, more like 3-4 times) and at some point it magically works again, then everything is fine. Has anyone have had this issue or any idea, where to look? P.S.: The Server is running Windows Server 2016 Standard, a local domain is set up with policies and the drives are mapped via groups to each user.

Hello, I have installed SoftEther VPN Server on my home PC and SoftEther VPN Client on my notebook. I have managed to establish connection and I can access other devices on my network. To be sure, my notebook is connected to the internet through my phone hotspot. So far so good. The problem occurs when I try to access service that is running on my Home PC/VPN Server. For example, I have web interface for Universal media server running on port 9001. IP of home PC/VPN Server is 192.168.0.3. If I try to access 192.168.0.3:9001 from any other device on my home network it works, but if I try to do it from notebook while connected through VPN it doesn't. If I disable VPN connection and connect to home network Wi-Fi, everything works. Any help is appreciated.

DOES VPN INCRESES SPEED?
-
Hello everyone, i am experiencing slow(er) Speeds when connected to PIA VPN. They advertise "no bandwidth limitations", but as soon as i connect my 1Gbps Connection is getting choked to max 200-250 Mbps download. My normal 50Mbps upload rate doesn't change however. I have already played around with the encryption and other settings and applied the PIA recommended settings for the fastest performance out of their FAQ. The only thing these settings really change for me is the ping, not the download or upload rate. Seems there is indeed a bandwidth limit happening here?! Real bummer, because thats one of the main reasons i went for them. Altough i found out about a few other nice-to-haves in the settings.

Hello Forum. My question..: How many users do a VPN server actual have pr server Ip address. example i use a vpn and i have for example access to 50 servers in Sweden. I was just wonderings if im connected to server X in sweden and i share that same server and ip with other users, then how many uses the same ip at the same time.. are we talking 50-100-500-1000 ? Ps.. I have tried to ask the VPN provider but they refused to tell me since it was not allowed. Thank you for your answer in advance.

Hi, I have a QNAP NAS which I would like to download some torrents on. I understand that I would probably need a VPN to download safely so my ISP doesn't get too suspicious. I would like to know what the fastest VPN would be for this? My location is Toronto, ON as I understand that server locations have something to do with speed. Also, if anyone comment on their opinions/experiences any of the below VPNs: NordVPN Surfshark Norton VPN Thank you.

Hi all, It's been a funny time on the internet with GDPR bombarding us with requests for data sharing and cookies, YouTube demonetisation and Sponsors being baked into the videos now; frankly it's gotten to the point where ads are just everywhere and it's triggering my OCD. Here's a list of ways around it, things and workarounds I had to research myself to get rid of everything. If you have any suggestions, feel free to comment bellow. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NETWORK + DESKTOP ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Pihole or PFSense + DNS Blocking allows you to block ads on your entire network, LTT did a good video on this and if you are interested I would suggest searching YouTube. + It's as easy as setting up a raspberry pi with a bit of code, assigning it an IP and you're of to the races. - Ads will display a Gray area with the message "ads.doubleclick address could not be found" Simple DNS Ad blocking. + It's free and can be done in no time at all. Just set your Windows DNS to 1.1.1.2 - This works reasonably well but has the same drawbacks as PiHole There's another workaround for that, see browsers and extensions. Windows versions like LTSC, without Bloatware + Way less bloatware, almost no telemetry - No Cortana (some might consider this a plus) - No windows store (can be patched in through Powershell although some games and apps require a windows version more recent than what LTSC offers so those will have to wait until 2021 for the next update) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Brave browser + The brave browser will filter out many scripts websites try to launch and stops auto-play, blocks cookies and many other things. - It doesn't work with google sync so passwords need to be exported first and then re-imported. To do this you need to activate password export in the google chrome advanced settings. Once this is done, it works just like chrome except faster and it blocks a loooot of trackers. These are some useful Extensions: Ublock Origin + As a browser extension Ublock origin blocks ads, the way adblock used to do it before they began whitelisting ads for their customers. + This will get rid of the empty ad spaces that DNS blocking leaves behind. Sponsorblock Many sponsors are being baked into YouTube videos (raid shadowledgend, Nord VPN, Skillshare...) We've heard them all, it is frustrating to skip forward, miss something, skip back again and keep watching. There's a fix for that too! You should still support your favourite creators through merch, affiliate links, superchats etc. This is simply about how to get an undisturbed viewing experience! + The browser extension Sponsorblock once installed automatically zaps user submitted ads in YouTube videos and simply skips them! Great! - It still displays a little pop up to let you know it just jumped past an ad in the video. If you wish not to see that, this can also be disabled in the extension settings. I don't care about cookies This little extension will get rid of the cookie/gdpr requests every website bombards us with. It doesn't accept cookies, even if it did, Brave would not save them, rather it just deletes the request window out of the websites HTML ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ON MOBILE ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Network wide ad blocking through DNS blocking will also result in less ads on your mobile device. Unfortunately this has a few flaws. Smartphones change networks often, and even use Mobile data, and those being outside of your home network will still let ads through. Many apps then cache these ads until you open the app again. Personnaly this meant coming home, unlocking my phone and still seeing ads... However, all hope is not lost! VPN Using a VPN, you can use DNS blocking again. This blocks ads system wide, even in apps. + Personally I use Blockada, it's free and easy to set up. Battery life seems not to be affected and most ads are gone (with some exceptions, we'll get into that.) - It still leaves those empty grey boxes when the ad can not be found. Brave and Opera Custom Browsers like Brave and Opera do a lot of ad removal and can get rid of scripts. + Opera is even able to delete those pesky cookie messages, especially helpful on mobile where screen space is already limited. - Although Brave is an awesome and fast browser, Opera wins this one in my regard since it blocks those cookie messages which brave cannot do. Newpipe An alternative YouTube player that doesn't display ads when used in conjunction with the other methods. + It's free and even let's you download videos. It's open source. - It doesn't use google play functionality so it needs a bit of configuration, but it's definitely worth checking out Instagram and Facebook These badbois were tricky. I just couldn't see how to get rid of their ads. The ads are hosted on the Facebook servers so dns blocking those would render them useles. Up until 2017 it was allegedly possible to get rid of all ads by flagging them as inappropriate for about a week, which would then somehow make it so Facebook doesn't deem you worthy of ads anymore. Maybe checking all of those requests was less profitable for Facebook. Anyways I'm currently still working on that. + It is however possible to use Opera and the website versions of those apps, and then to add them to the home-screen. This got rid of the in app ads - Using Instagram on the web version means no more gesture control in the stories. A worthy trade-of in my opinion. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's all folks. I hope this was of service to you. I know this list is not complete, and I am sure there will still be ways to feed us ads, but I'm counting on you to tell me more in the comments bellow. At the risk of sounding cringe: Make the internet great again!

Hi all, I have a Ethernet and WiFi on my desktop - both on same network. I need to use a VPN to remote work - its a custom VPN provided by my company not much settings to change unlike if you setup a VPN yourself from Windows 10. How can I make it so that the VPN connection goes through the WiFi card (its mostly for RDP session not need of too much bandwith so WiFi is more than ok). I partially succeeded but it requires me to disable the Ethternet , start the VPN and then re-enable the Ethernet. I want to avoid to do this and also sometimes when I re-enable the Ethernet the VPN drops. Does anyone tried something like this and could share his setup ? Thanks

Hi, So I was wondering that if I can use my home network (Broadband Connection) as VPN or a proxy server. That is, if say, I am on the road and I am using mobile data or a public hotspot, can I route through my home network? Thanks.

Hi, Before I buy a raspberry to do the PiHole setup I have a few questions since I was thinking about buying a new VPN for various reasons. sorry for my low tech skill in this field. I had 1 year of PIA in a humble bundle offer and it was fine except I had to remember to switch it off EVERY time I wanted to play any game or it would get me banned or give me connection issues. now I'm looking into different VPN offers but the question remains: is there a way to filter only Http/Https/torrent/voip/etc.. traffic on the VPN while leaving all Gaming ports (or even specific sources like Steam client browser which I think works on the same http ports) access the internet unbothered? my idea was to buy a firewall, do consumer-grade firewall exists? or can it all be done with a Raspberry without problems? can it be software integrated in my Router? if yes what model do you reccomend? I'm waiting for an upgrade to Fiber Modem soon (this year the ISP says) so I don't want to buy a different modem for now, but maybe I should buy a different one or I can still do everything while keeping the one from my ISP? (I don't know how expensive or common are fiber modem today) this way I can even select websites like my banking and have it unfiltered so even if I use my phone wi-fi I don't set an alarm when they see an access from Switzerland or another country. this way I can leave all the work on the machine and stop having to install the vpn on each computer and mobile at home. how does that work with Alexa and the Fire stick tv? is there something else I should know before going into this? maybe I did not take into consideration something and I will find myself stuck later on. thank you, I hope this is the right forum section

Hey y'all Danish Netflix is pretty shit, but I already have a subscription (giftcard). Which VPNs would be ideal for getting access to Netflix in other countries? I would like to pay as little as possible. Cheers!

Site A is Main Office Site B is Satellite Office Both sites running latest version of PFSense. IPsec Site to site bridge in place. Customer has white listed external IP of Site A for access to supported equipment. I would like to route all traffic bound for Customer.Domain.Com from Site B through tunnel and out to customer from Site A. If i called the Customer they would just add Site B's ip address to their white list, but I would like to learn correct way to selectively route traffic like this. Is this a new Phase 2 for the VPN? A firewall rule? etc. Any help would be appreciated. not sure if this is the best place to post to but im not getting answers on reddit or negates forum. Thanks. -StanFabInd

I need to know this, please someone help me out, I got 2 Riot accounts I used to have 1 username for both, recently I had to separate the 2 accounts and have a Different name for NA and LA account, and I recently got a drop after 5 or 7 hours of watching Streamers, YES u are supposed to watch only 1 streamer and 2 hours max, but I was interested in the game so I ended up watching 3 streamers, after 2 days I didn't watch anyone I got a drop today, but I got the drop on my LA account by accident and cause I forgot I separated the accounts, I Have a Valorant drop for the wrong Riot account, Does that mean I need to get another twitch account, and Watch more Valorant streams, and sign up and connect my NA Riot account this time and not sure if I'm correct but are Valorant drops IP lock? does that also mean I need to use a VPN? I have so many questions about this, not enough answers ... I wish Riot games had Tech support but that won't be available till the Game is fully released maybe I'm wrong maybe ... I could play with my LA account ok ... but I'm an idiot and I really do need help with this

Networking Noob question. We have been all sent home to work remotely we are having to use Azure VPN to connect to work. I normally run PIA as my default vpn, since my system has two on board NICs can I marry(?) one VPN to each NIC? The thought is one NIC will handle all my work stuff and the other for my normal home use so I dont have to keep swapping VPNs. Not sure if this is possible but the hardware in use is: Mobo: Asus Prime X-299 Deluxe and the router: Netgear Nighthawk XR500. I would like to hard wire it vs going WiFi. I have a very basic understanding of subnetting (not sure if that will be required) but havent done it in years and never done it with a VPN softwear.

I have such issue. Thought it's just me, but today found another person with the same issue. Does anyone else experience it? Any solutions? Using pia's ovpn profiles on networkmanager on arch linux. Running it 24/7. NM tells me that authentication failed. Usually happens every 1-2 days at night ~1-2am gmt+0, but also happens at other times. Could be the network, but my own ovpn server connection (previously main, now backup) stays connected. Set up ping with 5s interval, but that did not help much besides fix another issue with random connection drops (it reconnected after 30-60s before, now almost instant).

Hi there good people of LTT and followers. I thinking about that a lot for the last year. We have some good bargain workstations and our restaurant, as an entushiast and ex-employed of video/after effects/3D. I use to work with all the resources of my home, but always think of those 32 Xeon extra cores doing nothing at restaurant 24/7. This week I access remotelly to them to use them for folding@home. So my question is. Which will be the best option to set them under my LAN? VPN and something like teamviewer to remote access and launch rendering queue?. I have simetrical 600Mb on both locations, so don't think bandwith its a problem. Thanks In advance.
