  1. Hey guys, A new system admin here in my fourth week. I am attempting to archive a 33GB .PST file downloaded from Exchange and move it to a dedicated Archive drive in a VMWare VM over the network. Attached I have a photo of what I am seeing before it errors out on me. The file transfer at the full gigabit speed until it drops and remains to a crawl. The host's drives are running a traditional HDD raid so I am assuming it may be a cache issue that the drive simply cannot handle/maintain the sustained writes? Let me know what you guys think and I can provide any additional details. Thank you in advance!
  2. Having an issue with adding another TrueNAS box to a VMWare storage pool. I can ping the address I set to the TrueNAS box on each of the hosts, but it isn't showing up in VMWare or VSphere as an iSCSI target. Any reason why this might be happening?
  3. Installed Project64 on my pc before reboot, and it runs fine. but when try to run project64 after reboot pc they give this error "Cannot open a ROM because plugins have not successfully initialized" when try to open ROM on Project64, Some applications such as VMware and ThrottleStop ran fine before reboot, after reboot pc it get c000003e error when try to run those applications. I also tried RetroArch on Linux it works fine but after reboot pc it crashes when loading content. VMware also works fine in Linux without errors. I also tried Windows 8.1 it gets same issue. Health in two HDDs is even good. Two HDDs don't have bad sectors issue. PC Specs: CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K GPU: AMD HD 6570 RAM: 4GB RAM OS: Crunchbang++ 64bit and Windows 10 64bit HDD: 2x500 GB HDD. HP Compaq 8200 Elite PC
  4. Hi, I am trying to ping between my host windows PC and guest windows VM. At the moment I have my network set upto bridging mode where it is bridged to my laptops inbuilt WiFi adapter. So far I am able to ping the home router, reach the internet and also ping another PC connected to my home router after disabling its firewall. I have disabled the firewalls in both the VM and the host and they still cannot seem to be able to ping each other. The host can also ping the router, ping the other PC in the network and access the internet. My router IP: 192.168.1.1 IP of the VM: 192.168.1.131 IP of the host: 192.168.1.5 IP of the other PC on the network: 192.168.1.4 Can anyone please suggest how I could achieve this. Thanks.
  5. Hello Everyone looking for a suggestion here.I am planning on to assemble a Gamng/esxi machine. CPU: AMD 3900x/3950x MOBO:X570 Phantom Gaming-ITX/TB3 RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-64GVK GPU: 2070/2080 Super I already have a ssd and hdd from old machine to use. Case:Fractal Design Node 202 Case+750W PSU I want this to be as minimal as it can be in terms of space. Looking for suggestions here or your feedback to how I should proceed. Thanks in advance
  6. Hello friends, I think it goes without saying Zoom is one of the most sketchiest conference programs being used today, And as I have a job interview this Friday, I would like to get it running in a VM first. I've tried pushing my camera both with the Virtualbox extension pack and as a standard USB device, neither work on Windows or Linux (Not pictured because my PC BSOD when I kill the VM but I also tried Manjaro), Camera is a C920 Pro, Works fine on my base system, Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

  8. 1st thing 1st I think this thread is in the right sub-forum, if its not I apologise. *waves frantically at Linus and Luke* Hello there guys, this is my first post. I'm a long time fan of LMG, and I have used the forums a few times to find help and advice. But this time I just can't find what I need, I think my Google-Fu is not strong enough. HISTORY I will start here. Until recently I, like every respectable geek, had 2 main PCs. The gaming rig and the server. Rig 1 - Day 2 day, Gaming, etc Windows 10 SSD - Windows SSD - Games HDD - #Stuffdrive Rig 2 - Media + Backup Server LIAN LI PCB70B Ubuntu 9 HDDs 1 - 500Gb - Ubuntu install and main downloads/sort + dump folders 8 - BtrFS - 1-3Tb - Backups, Media, Music, everything This way I had full network access to my entire library, all of my backups, and everything. Backups are run from within Windows and stored on the server. I use Kodi for the media centre on both PCs. BtrFS was NOT setup in a pool (im just not that good) but i used it primarily for the built in compression, and long term data storage benefits. My plan is to eventually upgrade the server to an UnRaid box and fully utilise its abilities. Recently my life situation changed. I am living with friends and having 2 PCs running is out of the question. THE PLAN Consolidate both PCs in to the Lian Li Tower case from my server. There is more room, for all the HDD's, and cooling for everything. Plus it has a hefty 1200w PSU. Run the rig as if it were still the main Windows gaming rig. Virtualise my entire Ubuntu server inside VirtualBox. This way all of my full setup will still be accessible. Everything over "the network", and the least amount of configuration (Inside the Ubuntu server at least) Run my PC as normal, but when I want to use the server, I just run the VBox VM, and crack on as normal. Or have it auto-boot with Windows. THE PROBLEM HOW DO I DO THIS? All the drives from the server (ex Ubuntu) are formatted in BtrFS, Windows doesn't work with updated, fun, decent, future looking File Formats such as BtrFS. So I think that as i'm not going to be accessing any of these drives from Windows itself, I should be able to use some form of hardware pass-through for the server drives, directly into the VM. I've been trying my hand at Google-Fu combined with my own knowledge, I know I should be able to do it, with either the "Serial Ports" feature or through CMD using "VBoxManage" but I don't know how. I could play around with this, but last time I did such a thing, I wiped the encryption headers from a 3Tb drive. (Don't do trial and error without sleep people!) THE ASK Can anyone out there help me with this? I know it should be doable. I know what I want + need Re-build my rig into my Lian Li case Connect ALL drives Not a problem I have enough SATA ports on my Mobo + HBA card. Build Ubuntu server in VBox. With the help of a dd img backup. (This I already have a guide for) Connect all server drives to the VBox server. Profit Wouldn't this make a great video for luke?
  9. I am a student in college (not a very good one, thus why I'm here asking for help) and I will eventually be in classes where I will need VMware, but that is at least a couple of years out. Currently, I have no experience using virtual machines, but I'm in some development classes that I believe would be improved if I could host XAMPP locally in order to test my php/perl scripting without having to upload it to the student server (which is time consuming during scripting/debugging), so I've concluded that it would probably be best to set up virtual machine capabilities in order to install XAMPP (on Linux, in a VM). I don't have any experience doing any of this, but I think I can figure it out. What I'm wanting to know is which Virtual Machine software suite is most similar to VMware, but FREE, since I really need to learn VMware, but I can't afford it currently (even with the student discount). I don't want to learn a program that will make learning VMware more difficult due to the need to "unlearn" things that operate completely differently, so I'm trying to get whatever free VM software is the closest to VMware in usability/UI. What would serve my needs best? Virtual Box? Hyper-V? Something else? I'd like to stress that I have zero experience with any of this, and I'm just going by what I could find using google search. Am I over-complicating this? I tend to do that. To be clear: I'd like to be able to run php and perl locally on my PC (Windows 10, 64 bit) so that I do not have to upload my webpages that include server-side scripting to the server to see if they work because it is very time-consuming.
  10. Here is some context: My company uses an OLD DOS software for product purchasing, distribution, and sales. As it is a 16-bit software and DOS, it must be run on an XP or older OS. Due to aging hardware and older OS compatibility issues, I have decided to try using Virtual Windows XP machines on more modern hardware (ie. Windows 10 x64 machines.) I have set up the virtual machine as Windows XP Professional x86, enabled networking via NAT to the existing network adapter (Intel Lan Adapter.) I have an internet connection on the virtual machine (can get on Google.com with no problem, but I cannot see the server on the network, or any of the other connected workstations for that matter.) Any words of wisdom?

    VMWare help

Hello there, I was playing around in VMWare workstation pro 12. Then I had to turn off my virtual machine and now it wont even boot. I never touched any setting which have anything with this to do, and all the posts I can find online with this problem is people who want to upgrade to windows 10, and I've had windows 10 working without any problems... bear in mind this is on my Laptop not on my primary dekstop, Thank you
  12. I want to transfer my OSX Guest OS to an actual hard drive and put it in a mac I have, is there a way to convert the VMDK file to an IMG file?
  13. I have been developing an app on my OSX Sierra Guest (Windows 10 Host) and after updating VMWare Workstation, I get that first image during the VMWare boot screen, and that second image (Kernel Panic) during the apple logo boot screen. For some reason, recovery mode isn't working (I am holding Windows+R while it boots, right?).
  14. Right, So i'm new to networking and servers. I'm going away for a bit next weekend and i want to be able to use my Vmware esxi server from the hotel i'm stopping in. I also want to be able to use the IPMI adaptor on my Server. Basically i want to be on my network from the hotel. Does anybody know how to achieve this? Thanks
  15. Hey, right now i have a hp proliant server and the CPU isnt cutting it for my needs anymore. I am planning to upgrade to an I5 or something similar for some more performance. I figured this would be a good time to play with VM stuff on a server. My current server has 4x4TB drives in ZFS raid an the OS running on a 32gb ssd. If i wanted to recreate that in a VM how should I go about doing that? From what i've pieced together it seems I should install esxi on a usb/sd card, create the VM and give it space from the SSD and 4x4TB drives then create a ZFS raid with the 4TB drives? (I also read something about just passing the controller through to the VM?) Basically I just want to let this VM have access to a big 12TB mount for movies and tv shows and such. It doesnt need to be ZFS it's just what i've worked with. Or should I do raid 5 from the motherboard and assign the VM the one partition instead of doing software raid in the VM. This is the hardware I am planning on using https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gwmJGf (cheaper variant) https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZBGNZ8 Thanks!
  16. So I started a similar topic on TH but then I realized this is probably a better place to ask. I am trying to install Sims 3 on a VM for my niece (last time she had access to my pc for an extended period I got malware). The problem is that Sims 3 checks your gpu for compatability and if it isnt listed in the games gpu list then you have to add it manually. The problem is that when running a VM the virtual gpu obviously isnt on the list of supported gpus and it adding it is very hard since every manufacturer has custom made rules for their gpus. I tried tinkering and converting the rules from other manufacturers to get the virtual GPU to work but to no avail. The thing is that the game tries to set video settings to suit the gpu (which you later can change), but if it isnt recognized it wont even give you the chance to set the settings. (EA.. pls...) I got the idea that if I could change the VM gpu information in the registry to have identical information to say an nvidia 460, the game would start propperly. The thing is tho I dont really know how where to start, I need the dxdiag to output identical display info as it would with a supported gpu. I am running windows 10, I would switch to linux and make it easier on me but I cant because of adobe. Worst case scenario I might have to dualboot linux and then through that run a VM with a gpu passthrough with AMD and Nvidia at the same time (the only 2 gpus I own, sadly fx8350 doesn't intergrated graphics). Lastly; is there any possibility to create a virtual device that would mimic a gpu just cosmetically? As in only look as if a gpu is connected so that Sims can let the game launch? Thanks in advance, 1k cookie points to whoever solves this.
  17. Hello! I have a problem, and many have asked this before but, why is performance in VMware (or any virtualization software) so bad? Everybody I have found who ask this question is running hardware not capable of running VMs, but my hardware should be capable of it. All OS's have this bad performance, but especially Windows 10 is bad. Choppy animations and slow performance in general. VMware tools are always insalled. The machine was dedicated 4 cores and 6 GB of RAM. This is always the case with all VMs. Core i7 4790K, 16 GB of RAM, GTX 770, host is Windows 7 running VMware 12.5.
  18. I just installed VMware on my Dell R310 rackmount server. I am now installing Ubuntu. In the install process, it is asking if it should add a new MBR. Should I or would that screw up everything else?
  19. Hello! I am trying to build a small computer lab for the after school program at my church. I decided to try to use a single server running 9 virtual desktops on 9 23" monitors placed around the room. I have a $7,000 budget, and threw together the following part list: ASAP Server Parts List I recently saw Linus' video where he showed that i7's were much more capable at running his video processing operation than his 22-core Xeons. I understand that one isn't simply better than the other, but I would like some feedback on this parts list. Are these Xeon processors the best processors for the job? I don't plan on doing any intensive work on any individual station: just basic flash games, web browsing, simple typing applications, and maybe Portal. However, with the other costs of making the lab, I'm pretty much out of space in the budget, so I would like to keep the price pretty much the same, if possible. Thank you guys so much! Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
  20. Hi I have a windows VM running in VMware on a local pc account and I want to run it on another local account on the same pc. My worry is that doing this may start creating problems with the windows licensing. For reference, its a windows XP Professional license with service pack 2 installed. The way i would go about accessing it is by loading the windows VMDK file in VMware on my second account and booting it up. Would this cause any problems with the license. Would MS think the product is activated on 2 different PCs? I think its unlikely due to it effectively been like accessing the same hard drive and system components but just from a different Window. Any help is appreciated!
  21. Hello fellow geeks, I'm planning to build my own unRAID NAS, but running VMWare in my homelab already got me thinking. "What if the NAS also runs VMWare?" So that set off a whole string of ideas of which my last one has such a thin line between genius and stupid I just have to do it. The idea: Get an SSD and a bunch of large harddrives. Don't get a RAID controller Install VMWare on the SSD Install unRAID in a VM (on the SSD) Attach the harddrives to the unRAID VM (direct mapping, not an image) Create a RAID volume in unRAID like normal and enable CIFS, NFS, etc. shares. Attach the unRAID volume to VMWare via NFS so I can run more VMs with plenty of disk space. Optional bonus stupid idea: create a Windows VM and attach an iSCSI volume to it so I can use native Windows credentials for shares. And presto, a NAS and VMWare box all in one.
  22. So i currently have a macbook pro as my daily and it has been for the past 5 years (not to mention the fact that before that I had been all apple for a really long time). And my goal is to run an OSX (el captain or sierra) VM on my new alienware 13 that I have coming in. The trick here is that I would like to find a way to take my current OSX with all of my apps and files and transfer it over to a virtual machine (willing to run any free or reasonably priced virtualization software such as virtualbox, vmware, hyper-v, etc...) I have read people trying to do this with time machine and then restoring from time machine which doesnt exactly seem to work all the time. Of course apple makes this really easy when you buy a macbook they have a tool to transfer everything over wifi to the new computer but that doesn't seem to work either. Any help would be awesome.
  23. So, i want an online web server and a network shared VM in the same machine. The base operating system is Windows Server 2016, How do i connect my non-vm physical computers (one is XP 64bit, other is Win10 64bit) to a local VM in my server so i can share the horse power of my server to other users in my network (connected by Ethernet) i have a rough idea of incorporate ESXi but it probably won't work. 24. Here's an alternative way to install windows 95 for those still having issues installing windows 95 manually without the floppy setup disk what you need: .DOS on a floppy or on an image (.flp .img) .Windows 95 cd .VMWARE player (it's free) or virtualpc (I recommend VMWARE) .Magiciso (the free trial version will do) .a copy of MSCDEX.EXE and oakcdrom.sys (both can be found online) MSCDEX.EXE: http://www.techadvice.com/tech/M/MSCDEX.htm oakcdrom.sys: https://goo.gl/YTZ3nL Magiciso: http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm step 1 create a new virtual machine (make sure to add a floppy image drive if you are using vmware) step 2 put your dos floppy/image in or mount it and install dos step 3 download and install the free version of magiciso open magic iso go to new - floppy - 1.44 find a copy of mscdex.exe find a copy of oakcdrom.sys (generic cd rom driver that works with dos.. might have to try another if it doesn't work) RENAME the oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys drag both these files into magic iso on the floppy disk we just created save the file close magic iso find the file we just saved in your explorer change the extension from .ima to .flp (if you are using vmware) or .img (if you are using virtualpc) (if you can't see the extensions you're going to need to change your folder options to show extensions) google it. it's easy to do step 4 go back to your virtual machine mount the floppy image we just created a:\ copy mscdex.exe c:\ copy cdrom.sys c:\ (don't forget to rename oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys in step 3) step 5 find config.sys in your c drive type: edit config.sys now add a line that says this device=c:\cdrom.sys /d:mscd001 exit and save step 6 find autoexec.bat in your c drive type: edit autoexec.bat now add a line that says this c:\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001 exit and save step 7 restart the computer or virtual machine step 8 we're still not done yet now move to your c drive and type mscdex.exe: /d:mscd001 /M:5 /V /L:d /S /K (this part /M:x refers to the amount of buffers your drive has.. it's either 4 or 5. usually 5) step 9 create a blank floppy image either in vmware or magic iso then mount that new one put your windows 95 cd in the cd drive type: d:\ setup.exe step 10 it should be booting windows 95 now now you might run into troubles when it tries to install the other drivers it might ask you for windows floppies even if you're using the cd version which I never understood but anyways, you can find all of these drivers on the windows 95b cd if you have it they're all in cab files so you'd need to extract them 1 by 1 and put them on floppy images to use them. (huge pain) but I actually just got it to load the drivers off the win95 cd by just trying it over and over again until it worked. it might have been because I either did or didn't restart after putting in the windows 95 cd can't remember, but I'd try both if you're having trouble all in all windows 95 is incredible wonky to install in a virtual machine. I highly recommend using VMWARE and not virtual pc for this one. If you didn't have a hard time installing this.. you got incredible lucky make sure you check to make sure windows95 is seeing your cd drive if not go to the add new hardware wizard in the control panel and see if that detects it (Note: I tried to install it without installing MS-DOS first the first time by using fdisk and format then creating the autoexec.bat and config.sys manually. Even though I did this right I ran into problems when windows started installing. Installing dos before hand made it run a lot smoother for some reason. Ask around and find a copy from a friend. A lot of people still have a copy lying around that they don't care about)
  25. Good morning LTT Forum Junkies I'm looking to downsize my current set of servers to one single server that can withstand some expandability (more VM's) and sata is a must. I would really like an atx form factor so I can build it as a desktop tower size (perhaps using an air 540 case). My server setup: Server 1 (vmware) HP Proliant DL320 G6 4 CPUs x 2.133Ghz E5606 Xeon Vmware Sphere 6 Processor sockets: 1 Cores Per: 4 2 nics 4 virtual Machines Currently 3 data stores ( I have drives to expand this but ran out of slots) 4tb currently all together Ram 20gb (15.5gb currently allocated) VMware is running from a 120gb samsung evo ssd. systems ran server 1 Server 2016 Domain Controller Windows 7 File Server/Murmur Server/Plex Server/Milestone VMS for security Cameras. Windows 7 vm of my old pc incase I need to go back and grab a file or run a program I had on that machine that is so rarely used I decided not to transfer it to the new. Random Linux playground Server 2 Free Nas 4 2tb drives zfs ( I have 3 more but ran out of slots) Build FreeNAS-9.10.2-U6 (561f0d7a1) Platform Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz Memory 16344MB System Time Thu Oct 12 10:25:09 CDT 2017 Uptime 10:25AM up 49 days, 15:53, 0 users Load Average 0.11, 0.34, 0.47 I'm looking to find one atx motherboard with say 12-16 cores 32gb of ram and enough sata ports to make the pope cry. Problem is I want to keep this down on a budget. I will sell these 2 servers once I get the new server up and going so that money can be rolled into the purchase price. It would be awesome if I could find a place that would buy these servers and sell me a driveless server with dual 3ghz or higher hexcore cpu's and 32gb of ram. I understand the freenas server is overkill on power but it was what was available to me and had the appropriate sata ports and slots at the time. Any suggestions or leads would be super helpful. I really want to keep the price down as much as possible. This is just a home server setup that I use to practice on and run plex and a murmur server for my gaming habit. Thanks LTTF!
