Hey guys, I wanted to get the opinions of how feasible it is to do a Home Server/NAS build? Long term goal is an on-demand (via WOL) NAS and Email server, short-term is an on-demand home-lab where I can spin up VMs remotely to use for various things, primarily networking (think GNS3). Would a Ryzen 1700/1700X be good with the high core count? I would be maxing out the memory at 32GB immediately--which is a slight bummer because in the long term I would prefer 64 GB. Since the memory cap is holding me back, going with something server grade like the upcoming Naples seems promising for a budget solution, but how much of a price jump would I be expecting? I was this to be a semi-long term server so I am willing to spend my budget anywhere between 1800 and 2500. Thoughts, suggestions?

I am looking into running freenas with two host OSs probably windows 10 and linux but I have seen that you need a gpu for each system I have an rx 480 is there anyway to use that gpu only for two vms each with their own peripherals. sorry for posting in general I didn't know where to put this post.

I am wondering if there is a way to run to vms from freenas with only one GPU I currently have an msi armor oc edition rx 480. I want to virtualise windows 10 and ubuntu.

Hello, I'm setting up an OS X 10.11 VM in VirtualBox but I'm having issues with booting it up. I followed this guide for doing it and used the vm image that came with it. I'm using version 5.1.14 r112924 of VirtualBox. When I hit startup, the vm window appears and it seems to work fine, but while still displaying console text, it just stops and doesn't do anything at all, not even any hard drive use in the vm. Here's a screenshot from a bit after it stops: The line that looks the most important is the 3rd and 2nd last lines, but I am not very familiar with Mac OS so I'll leave the judgement to those that really know what they're doing. How can I solve this problem and get the OS properly working? Thanks for any help.

I work for 8 years with 3d rendering and advertising, and for personal reasons I'm going to work from home now. Hi Fist of all, im pretty new to this building custom PC's, but i like the idea to have more running on a high spec pc. Im lookning in to build a PC with UNRaid or esxi (UNRaid look nice but is new to me, Esxi I know very well, but Esxi has limited support for GPU pass through, in a reasonable price level - well at least to their website and Tesla or Grid, is just overkill) it will run approx 10 VM where two of them are with dedicated GPU (one gamer and one regular Power user with Video Edit - Avid and Adobe) Looking for the right motherboard, with two CPU Intel CPU Chip: input appreciated, but was thinking E5-2640V4 or E5-2660V4 - maybe some similar in the non Xeon world but need a descent amount of cores M2 slot - ideally two or more for quick cache - this could be SSD for Raid10 4-6 big HDD for raid10 (5-10TB each) Tree GPU - one for VM Remote desktop or some similar but more cool, one for gaming and one for video edit. most likely going to build it in a desk layout or a frame layout in the bookshelf - so last criteria - it looks fancy showoff nice! Input more than Welcome.... even if you want to tell me that im an idi.... trying to build such thing :-)

If i have a pc with 2 vm and turn only one on will the whole cpu run or just the cores assigned to one vm

So I started a similar topic on TH but then I realized this is probably a better place to ask. I am trying to install Sims 3 on a VM for my niece (last time she had access to my pc for an extended period I got malware). The problem is that Sims 3 checks your gpu for compatability and if it isnt listed in the games gpu list then you have to add it manually. The problem is that when running a VM the virtual gpu obviously isnt on the list of supported gpus and it adding it is very hard since every manufacturer has custom made rules for their gpus. I tried tinkering and converting the rules from other manufacturers to get the virtual GPU to work but to no avail. The thing is that the game tries to set video settings to suit the gpu (which you later can change), but if it isnt recognized it wont even give you the chance to set the settings. (EA.. pls...) I got the idea that if I could change the VM gpu information in the registry to have identical information to say an nvidia 460, the game would start propperly. The thing is tho I dont really know how where to start, I need the dxdiag to output identical display info as it would with a supported gpu. I am running windows 10, I would switch to linux and make it easier on me but I cant because of adobe. Worst case scenario I might have to dualboot linux and then through that run a VM with a gpu passthrough with AMD and Nvidia at the same time (the only 2 gpus I own, sadly fx8350 doesn't intergrated graphics). Lastly; is there any possibility to create a virtual device that would mimic a gpu just cosmetically? As in only look as if a gpu is connected so that Sims can let the game launch? I've been trying to make VMware workstation 12 run my Windows 10 VM, but I always get this BSOD everytime I run it on my rig. Same BSOD appears when I re install windows 10, it only happens when I use windows 10 as my host OS. I've been scratching my head for the past hour now and I need windows 10 to run on my PC without any hitches. Hello Community, i am running Ubuntu LTS 16.04 and a KVM Win10 VM with Hardware Passthrough. (My system is listed Beleow) With my normal usage i am getting between 85-95% Cpu Usage + a Heavy Ram Usage. My system doesen't feel that snapy anymore, furthermore i am not so happy about my single Thread Perfomance. So i want to do a little upgrade between 500-1500€. Thought about a Ryzen CPU+ Faster Storage, but i am not sure since Ryzen only has 24 Pci Express Lanes. And Some(Hardware Passthrough Related Issues) Or should i wait on Skylake EP ? Hello, Can someone tell me how to access a terminal server VM from a remote workstation over VPN? The server is Windows 2012 with Virtual Box installed. AD DS is installed on the physical machine and the terminal server is a VM. The remote workstation needs a specific application that runs in the terminal server. The VPN enabled router will be something like a SonicWALL TZ300. Does the VPN client software see the terminal server on the network? How exactly do they connect? Thank you.

What would you guys recommend to use to create a set of virtual machines. I have a old computer to use but not sure if i should use Windows Virtual Machine Server but require a licence to do this. Any recommendations for software to use?

I'm trying to set up virtual machines to run 2 instances of GTA V and/or Ark, so me and a friend can play at the same time. The problem is Virtualbox will not allow me to allocate more than 256mb of vram to a machine. So how the hell did Linus do it?

Hi guys, I will finish school in like a month and I am planning on building a new computer afterwards, based on a Ryzen 7 1700X. Currently I am using Windows 10 as my OS but I am not really liking it, so my plan is to switch to a Linux distibution such as Linux Mint. The only problem with that are the games (and some other programs). Maybe you watched the WAN-Show where Luke said the he was planning to build a machine to run Linux and Windows and kinda stream the game running on Windows to the other platform. (I hope you understand me.) That's also what I roughly had in mind: My idea was using KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) to run Windows, because I don't know if running it on a usual VM would bottleneck it. So I wanted to ask you guys if you have any experience with that or some other ideas.

i have a windows os and want to dualboot with a linux flavor is there a way to be able to natively run the os but then in windows run it as a vm. so that way i can dualboot but if i need something i an open it as a vm. a easier way to explain this is can a vm tool boot from partition.

i want to make a os tailored around virtualbox. what is the best way i could do this. one option i thought could be me installing arch or something of the sort and uninstalling everything not needed. what could be a good way to do this. are there any other options. thanks for the help.

While running Ubuntu or any other Linux distro on a pretty much straightforward, I can't find any .ISO disk images for Chrome OS. I found something from here and here but it's a .img file which virtual box doesn't support. Any help would be greatly appreciated? Do you know any method @Comic_Sans_MS @Ryan_Vickers?

I'm trying to set up pfSense with VirtualBox. I have installed, but I can't set to the Web GUI. Not sure what all to include here to help troubleshoot, but here's a picture to show what I see in VirtualBox right now. Ask me any questions you need! The network adapters are setup with Adapter 1 running the real ethernet on Bridged Adapter [Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I217-V] and adapter 2 on Internal Network [intnet].

Hello everyone, I'm pretty new to unRAID and VMs. I installed unRAID on an old (but beefy) PC of mine that i used to host servers on (TS3, MC, SE, etc.) in order to convert it into a family NAS as well as use its VM capabilities to run a windows 10 to host my servers. I plugged in 4 4TB drives (1 is parity) and a 128 gig SSD for cache and the NAS runs like a charm. Now onto VMs. I cannot get it to work with passthorugh devices. If i set the VM to use dedicated GPU or the motherboard's sound card, it gives IOMMU errors (below) and doesn't start. If i select VNC as graphics and no sound at all, it runs fine. I tried useing PCIe ACS override but no luck with it either. From what i could gather from extensive google-ing, it seems like proper VT-d support on the chipset i'm using is pretty hit/miss . Machine Specs: Asus P6X58D Premium | Xeon X5650 | 12GB DDR3 RAM | GTX 1050 | RX 480 | 4x4TB NAS drives | 128GB SSD for cache | 120GB SSD for VM vDisks. GTX 1050 is in the top PCIe slot to be used by unRAID. I'm trying to passthrough the RX 480 to the VM (second PCIe Slot). Any idea how i can fix this without getting a new mobo because that's kind of not possible atm (and my friends are w8ing for my servers )? IOMMU report: Error log from trying to launch a VM: I posted this on reddit and unRAID's own forums which seem to be deserted on the KVM topic. Since posting this i tried some things: Moving GPUs around PCIe slots = no luck. PCIe ACS Override = no luck. PCIe ACS Override + vfio_iommu_type1.allow_unsafe_interrupts=1 in syslinux.cfg allows the VM to start but causes the following: With the RX480 as the passthrough device, it renders bright green squares on the screen for a few seconds after VM startup and then shows the "press any key to boot", again in green. If i press a key and send it to boot it starts loading windows, again with inproer green rendering and then crashes and the entire unRAID server hangs up. With the GTX1050 as a passthrough, it fires up the OVMF UEFI emulated bios after starting the VM. When i leave it and proceed to boot the windows installer, it start loading and hangs up again like with the RX480 (subsequently crashing the whole unRAID server a few seconds later as well), but the GTX1050 renders properly - no green artifacts and whatnot. Both of these didn't leave anything in the logs for me to investigate thou. You are my last hope LTT forum people. I'm really liking unRAID as a NAS, I just need to get these VMs to work properly.

Which is the best method to get MacOS on windows using virtual machine. I want graphics card support too, which is the most important thing i care about. PS I tried Hackintosh, no luck everything failed.

Hey there, I am planning on getting a new PC that will stay in my flat and function as my gaming PC (I mostly play EU4 and occasionally BO2 Zombies, MC or LoL, so an rx 480 / 1060 will be plenty). I also want to run unraid and to make the machine a NAS, I have some random 500GB drives laying around which I will be using for the array, though I would like to have a propper 2TB + drive for the parity so that I can add bigger drives without having to rebuild the array. I would prefer to have at least 2 preferably 4 threads assigned to the NAS, while CPU performance is pretty important in my beloved EU4. Thus I thought about going red this time around. I would probably also prefer to go red with the card since FreeSync panels are way easier to come by than GSync ones. I will also need a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse, but I pretty much decided on the letter ones. My budged is about 1250€, the smaller and quieter the PC can be the better, and if I have to go with a midtower I'd probably spend the extra few buck to upgrade to an S340 Elite or the equivalent 70€ phenteks case. For mouse and keyboard I will most likely go with the G403 and the G610 with brown flavour, unless someone knows another 10keyless brown keyboard with similar features around that pricepoint. I am located in GER and would prefer buying from mindfactory (this purchase will put me above 10K total ). Also: when I have a window I really like backplates and I hate the saphire one since it is messy AF. My first idea was this (I am very sorry, but I had it in there already and searching it all on PC partpicker is a pain in the butt since the MoBo wasn't even listed the last time I looked) Any suggestions?
