I just started Visual Studio and I followed a video that created a local database and connected it to Server Explorer in Visual Studio, the steps I did were: 1. Right click my project, choose Add -> New Item -> Service-based Database 2. Went to the Server Explorer on the left, right clicked on Data Connections, choose Add Connection, selected the database that I created, tested the connection and it passed then pressed Ok 3. Populated my Database with three tables and added ten rows of data Now I don't know exactly how would my form have access to the database I created, I have a small experience with databases as I've studied web development for a month and I remember I made a variable to store the connection to the server, database, username, password then used that variable after every query I made.

I have a somewhat okay knowledge in Php but I recently started Visual Studio and I was wondering how would I go about converting my code to Visual Studio. I wanted to create a combo box that will print out the main category then the sub category under it then the items under it and so on until all main categories are finished. I had no idea how to write them on C# so I first created the code in PHP and tried to dissect them. So far my current code in Visual Studio is: private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e){sc.Open();//For Main CategorySqlCommand get_maincategory_name = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM maincategory", sc);SqlDataReader dr2 = get_maincategory_name.ExecuteReader();while (dr2.Read()){comboBox1.Items.Add(dr2["maincategory_name"].ToString());//For Sub CategorySqlCommand get_subcategory_name = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM subcategory WHERE maincategory_id='1'", sc);SqlDataReader dr3 = get_subcategory_name.ExecuteReader();while (dr3.Read()){comboBox1.Items.Add("--" + dr3["subcategory_name"].ToString());//For InventorySqlCommand get_inventory_name = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM inventory WHERE subcategory_id='1'", sc);SqlDataReader dr4 = get_inventory_name.ExecuteReader();while (dr4.Read()){comboBox1.Items.Add("----" + dr4["item_name"].ToString());}}}sc.Close();} My PHP code looks like this: echo "<select>";// FOR MAIN CATEGORY$maincategory_query = mysqli_query($con,"SELECT * FROM maincategory") or mysqli_error();while($got = mysqli_fetch_assoc($maincategory_query)){$maincategory_id = $got['maincategory_id'];$maincategory_name = $got['maincategory_name'];echo "<option disabled>$maincategory_name</option>";// FOR SUB CATEGORY$subcategory_query = mysqli_query($con,"SELECT * FROM subcategory WHERE maincategory_id='$maincategory_id'") or mysqli_error();while($got = mysqli_fetch_assoc($subcategory_query)){$subcategory_id = $got['subcategory_id'];$subcategory_name = $got['subcategory_name'];echo "<option disabled>--$subcategory_name</option>";// FOR ITEM$item_query = mysqli_query($con,"SELECT * FROM item WHERE subcategory_id='$subcategory_id'") or mysqli_error();while($got = mysqli_fetch_assoc($item_query)){$item_id = $got['item_id'];$item_name = $got['item_name'];echo "<option>----$item_name</option>"; }}}echo "</select>"; The problems I'm having: It's only showing the first main category name and nothing else. I'm currently figuring out how to put dr2["maincategory_id"] (to replace the 1) inside the sql statement under WHERE but I'm having trouble figuring out what's the syntax on how it wouldn't be interpreted as a string. I don't know how to disable(or to make read-only) certain parts of the combo box.

In the middle of a toolbar in Visual Studio, I see a drop-down menu for choosing a configuration, and two options - Debug and Release - any difference between them? Like, at all?! Thanks!

I tried to run one of my projects for school but every time a run it I get the message that says "Project out of date". I read that I can fix it by deleting the tlog files and rebuild the project but it only works temporarily. Lets say I create another project/solution and run that, I get the message again, Or if I close Visual Studio and open it again later I get the message again. Can someone help please? Much appreciated.

I'm a part of a local theater group, and we want to digitize songs and sketches and make them public for the members. So I'm concidering a NAS setup. I don't intend to use a self-built setup like a linux system, but rather a setup like WD My Cloud or similar. I'm also thinking about making a simple user interface with Visual Studio for navigating and opening the videofiles. I own a domain name that fits. Would it be possible to link that domain name to the NAS? Or maybe even to that UI I mentioned (which would be a .exe file)? The domain is registered at Hover.com. Do you have any recommendations? Also, would there be any restrictions on how many people could access the files at the same time? Other than bandwidth limitations.

So I'm doing a disk cleanup by uninstalling some old programs that I no longer use, and I noticed Visual Studio 2010. It is the only premium software that I have on this computer (other than Windows 7 + Steam games). Anyway, I am wondering if there is a way to retrieve the product key before uninstalling so that I can use the key again if I choose to reinstall it in the future. I know that Visual Studio is not bound to hardware like Windows or Office, but the only thing I found in the program was that the program was registered to my name. At this point, it's not particularly important with the 2015 'Community Edition' which is free and has all the features of premium anyway, but I'd still like to have my 2010 key just in case. Out of curiousity, is it similar for other paid programs?

Hi all, I'm looking to see if anyone can help with an issue I'm having trying to publish to a local IIS server. I have an application I have developed that, when I run it on my DEV workstation under IIS Express, it works perfectly. But when I publish it, the application suffers Internal Server Errors and I'm not sure why. I've checked the event log and solved an issue with the user the site is being run under, not having access to the app pool, but no further log entries are being generated. Attempts to set debug flags and show the stack error after being published only show me an internal server error has occured in plain text, no 500 response or anything. I'm publishing from a Win8.1 Enterprise workstation with Visual Studio 2013 Premium, to a local Win 2012 R2 Standard server. Even publishing the stock Web Application project, it runs but trying to get it to DO anything returns an error. So I'm stumped on what to try next.

I created this trivial little column sum program as part of a basic into to optimization of one's code under various frameworks. I was then going to use it to show the weaknesses and strengths of various C++ compilers. The issue is it runs fine under G++, Clang++, and ICPC. On Visual Studio it crashes saying the vector indices are out of bounds. Am I missing something totally obvious after being away from vectors and arrays for a long time, or is this a Visual Studio issue like I think it is? under /usr/bin/time -v ./dummy 115000 20000, I get no error messages or exits with any abnormal signals/codes whether compiled under G++/Clang++/ICPC nor any warnings from the -Wall -Wextra flags. I'm stumped. @LukaP, got any ideas?

Hey everybody, I am trying to populate a checkedboxlist with the appropriate checked items from a text file. When I press the Load button on my program, it should populate with the checked items from the text file. I have already converted the items to strings that write to the text file with a Save button, now I just need to be able to read the text file with a Load Button. Almost done making this program in visual basic - going to remake it in C#, but for now, visual basic help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! PS: Here's what I have so far for the Write portion of the program: Dim sb As New System.Text.StringBuilder For Each item In My.Forms.Form2.clbDiscA.CheckedItems sb.Append(item) sb.Append(" ") Next SW = New StreamWriter("C:\Users\Pikey10\Documents\Visual Studio 2013\Projects\Planner3\Read Write\clbDiscA.txt") SW.WriteLine(sb.ToString()) SW.Close() End Sub

Hey everybody, I don't understand this error message: "Provide value on 'System.Windows.Baml2006.TypeConverterMarkupExtension' threw an exception.' Line number '7' and line position '14'." It's a Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) in Visual Studio using Visual Basic. Here's the code, I'm not sure I understand what's wrong: <Window x:Class="MainWindow" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="MainWindow" Height="350" Width="525"> <Grid> <Grid.Background> <ImageBrush ImageSource="space.jpg"/> </Grid.Background> </Grid> </Window>

Hi everybody, So I am new to C# (switching from visual basic) and I am having a tough time understanding how visibility works. I basically am trying to pass this: private void txtbClassNameA_KeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e) {///line of code that makes the enter key the keydown event txtbClassNameA.Visibility = false; } }} I am not sure how to program the enter button to initiate the key down event, and can't figure out how to set the visibility of my text box to false. Thank you for any help you can give!

Hi everybody, I want the text entered in Form 1 to change text in Form 2. Does this involve turning something from private into public? It's a school planner, so I want the text entered into the main menu to edit the text in a separate form. It goes like this: Enter text into text box in Main Menu to name the school subject. Separate form will have a textbox that gets the text entered from the Main form. Thanks for any help in advance!

I am currently an IT student and one of the classes I recently took was database development. Alhough, the class only focussed on back end development. I asked the instructor about learning front end development and he gave me a book on visual basic; now I have a few questions. As my first programming language, how difficult will it be? (considering I am learning it on my own) What are visual basic's main uses? After learning VB, what would be a good language for me to learn if I wanted to advance my programming knowledge? Thanks in advance.

I've been creating a program, and I would like some of the features to be separate in a DLL. I have followed the steps on the microsoft guide and this guide I found on codeproject (the codeproject one is much more in depth!). However, when I compile it I get LNK2019 and LNK1120 errors - unresolved external symbols. The code for the .cpp file is currently: #include "stdafx.h"#include <Windows.h>#include <ifmib.h>#include <IPHlpApi.h>#include "SystemUtilisation.h"DWORD systemUtilisation::GetReceivedBytes(DWORD adapterIndex){ MIB_IFROW mi; mi.dwIndex=adapterIndex; ::GetIfEntry(&mi); return mi.dwInOctets;} and the .h file (SystemUtilisation.h) is: #pragma once //This makes no difference#ifdef SYSTEM_UTILISATION_EXPORTS#define SYSTEMUTILISATION_API __declspec(dllexport)#else#define SYSTEMUTILISATION_API __declspec(dllimport)#endif#include <Windows.h>#ifdef __cplusplus //This makes no difference, I was trying it to see whether it would helpextern "C" {#endifclass SYSTEMUTILISATION_API systemUtilisation{public: static DWORD GetReceivedBytes(DWORD);};#ifdef __cplusplus}#endif I am compiling with Visual Studio 2012 express, and the errors are: Error 1 error LNK2019: unresolved external symbol _GetIfEntry@4 referenced in function "public: static unsigned long __cdecl systemUtilisation::GetReceivedBytes(unsigned long)" (?GetReceivedBytes@systemUtilisation@@[member=sakketheengineer]@Z) A:\Users\My user name\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\ShutdownScheduler\SystemUtilisation\SystemUtilisation.obj SystemUtilisationError 2 error LNK1120: 1 unresolved externals A:\Users\My user name\Documents\Visual Studio 2012\Projects\ShutdownScheduler\Debug\SystemUtilisation.dll SystemUtilisation If anyone can help me (I'm a bit of a noob at this sort of thing), I would greatly appreciate it. :D
