  1. I often find that the documentation on this subject either leaves a bit to be desired, doesn't emphasize some really important aspects, or is just downright hard to follow at times. Because of this, I wrote my own tutorial that primarily sources personal experience on the topic in an effort to drastically improve the available documentation on the subject (in a sort-of verbose nature). One of the goals of the tutorial is to show the reader examples and explain why things are being done so that the reader comes away from the tutorial with a better understanding of how PCI-e passthrough works overall. Feedback is highly encouraged! Submit an issue or pull request if you think the tutorial needs further improvement. I'm also open to suggestions of any kind. https://clayfreeman.github.io/gpu-passthrough/
  2. Hello I have 3 servers running freeNAS 1 of them is the storage server and the other 2 I want to use as Hyper Visor. So I want to have the storage server with freeNAS have a NFS share and mount that NFS share in the storage pool of the other 2 servers so I can utilize the storage server its storage for the VMs on the other 2 servers. I have been digging a lot and I can not find it I can how ever mount the NFS share fine in Ubuntu server centos etc I just can't find a way on how to do this in FreeNAS it self
  3. After talking about my upcoming new PC build a friend told me that Intels Virtualization technology (Vt-d / Vt-X) is way faster than AMDs (V / Vi), and that if I want to pass a PCIe device through to a virtual Win10 guest system, I would get a hefty performance penalty on AMD because their Ryzens are not designed to directly access/control IOMMU groups and that I HAVE to get an Intel system to avoid those problems. There were some numbers during the conversation, ranging between "about 90% of possible fps on AMD, maybe less" and "at least 30% performance loss on AMD". Though I find one forum post on tomshardware with the "best answer" claiming Intel is "better" with IOMMU, I can't find any reliable data on that topic, especially if it comes to PCI-passthrough. I never heard about any noticable performance differences between team Red and team Blue regarding virtualization myself, which is why I planed to go for a Ryzen 7 / X570 based system on Arch Linux, including a Win10 guest system with a 5700 XT passed through for games. Hope you can help me out here, I really don't want to buy unsuitable hardware.
  4. Just Wanting to talk about Hyper-V Virtualization on Enterprise hardware. Things like old Dell Poweredge R610's running windows 10 with Hyper-V? Dell R620 Overkill for virtualization for a startup? Differences between Hyper-V as an operating system and\or running as an application. Feature differences between Hyper-V on Windows Server and on Windows Pro installations.
  5. I'm inspired to do the gaming nas that what linus did way back 2015 and i like to do it too but i have one small problem. All virtualization videos of linus tech tips uses intel cpu and unraid. Unfortunately i dont have the luxury of buying another pc and a paid os just to do the project. I want to replicate the project using what i have already, which is a ryzen 5 2600 and a free os called freeNAS. Also i dont have the experience on tweaking bios and working with other os other than windows. Could someone help? I just want to know how to replicate it using the hardware that i have. Thanks
  6. Background for context: I'm creating this topic to find what you guys think of these three operating systems and what the pros/cons of each are. That and I'm trying to come to the best conclusion as to what os i should use for the sole purpose of having a host for PCI-Passthrough for the guest VM's to have. I have enough money to get UnRaid OS (basic) if I really have to, and I say this because in my experience with using linux, I did all the steps necessary to get it working and not only that but i also made sure that all hardware in my server are in separate IOMMU groups (which they are, every last part are and no ACS override patch is necessary.) What bugs me the most is that after following all necessary steps to get it working, it always fails one way or another. The only distro that i know of that worked without spitting out errors to my face is Manjaro. But, there in lies another issue: OVMF Tianocore firmware not recognized by libvirt gui, and within the software library gui i had it installed and restarted my server and yet it still didn't recognize that it was included. That is unless my particular build of Manjaro is buggy then fair enough. But, until I can find out about it with manual testing (I don't have physical access to it for now because it is located at my father's house and the drive is a long way's away. There's a good reason for it, I don't trust my step family with my computer. period. And my father is FAR from computer illiterate and knows which is which. Moving on..) i will have to plan ahead and make sure that i can go with the best option and if necessary, i will buy just to get PCI Passthrough working. From reading a couple of forums, OpenSuse, Arch, CentOS and Gentoo are arguably the ones that are well-suited to have run as the host for having these vms. OpenSuse caught my eye in particular due to having a gui desktop, and the kernel(s) (if I'm not mistaken, otherwise please correct me) are pre-configured for this type of virtualization application. And the command line scheme is familiar to me because i am used to the "apt-get" style that i learned from ubuntu originally when i first began using linux. Speaking of that, why does manjaro have to have a confusing command scheme? Instead of "apt-get" its "pamac" or something else. I get that linux can be open source and the command variable schemes can be different but dang is it confusing the hell out of me. XP Anyway, that aside I don't mind getting my hands dirty to get PCI passthrough working just as long as it works, otherwise my genetically coded stubbornness thanks to my scotch-irishness will make me continue until insanity comes around to making it work. So, what i know so far already are: i.) Citrix XenServer is Windows-centric (i.e., requires the server management console software to be run on a windows system in order to create vms, etc. Note that there's an open source version of this said software for linux available.) ii.) in order to get vmware esxi i would have to put in a lot of info before i can buy a license or let alone download a free version of the said hypervisor software. iii.) In order to get to download XenServer hypervisor, i must create an account and i'll be able to download it for free or buy a license to get more features. (Makes sense if i have to do that so I can add the licensed vers. to my account's shopping cart to purchase, fair enough.) iv.) unraid requires that you get a trial key or a key that allows you to use it full time (basic, pro, etc.) made by purchasing a key. So, is there any info at this point that needs to be corrected? If so, please correct me. Use Case moving forward: In my head, i would have a host that i can get access to in order to create and spin up a vm so that i can not only run it as a server for my windows machine to play games but as well as a hackintosh rendering station for content creation (non-commercial; private use at home.) and finally have it serve up some media for my kodi/plex clients and be a general-purpose file server. Final Conclusion: So, in terms of: i.) ease to setup a vm with a pci host device passed through to guest machine without too much difficulty (i.e., the manjaro example where the ovmf firmware wasn't detected after installation of package.) ii.) ease to obtain an .iso. iii.) ease to setup the packages required to host vms (libvirt, qemu, ovmf, etc.) iv.) less prone to errors when passing through a host device to a vm (note: while all devices are in completely separate iommu groups.) So, in your experience or opinion, which distro mentioned here is best for this application?
  7. Hi guys,I'm planning buying new configuration for my home server. I'm gonna use it for my "VMed" OS of choice (MacOS Mojave), to run my website, and to edit videos in Final Cut Pro X and myb Windows to fireup some games(like CSGO, not demanding games). Specs: CPU x 2 - Xeon X5690 - 200$ Motherboard - DELL POWEREDGE C1100 5MV6K CN-05MV6K - 30$ RAM - Samsung 48GB (12x4GB) 2Rx4 PC3-10600 - 50$ Graphics Card - Asus ROG RX580 8GB - 300$ SSD - Samsung 260GB - 30$ Hard Drive(s) - 2TB - 50$ Motherboard probably isn't the best choice so I'm looking for for some suggestions. Anyone have experience? Tnx<3
  8. I'm using Vmware workstation player. I have 1 guest OS that is Windows 7. I want better performance. There is little difference in my game performance when gaming on both Host and Guest at the same time vs just gaming on either one of them. I've come to the conclusion that it must be the amount of processors/cores I've assigned in Vmware workstation player. My CPU is an AMD Ryzen 5 1400 with virtualization support and I am using a Radeon Rx580 4gb. 8gb of Ram. My VM is 40GB. My processor has 8 cores. Also supports SMT/Hyperthreading. How many cores would you recommend that I assign to my VM? I get the same Frame Rates on the Host with the VM running a game as I would with the VM not running. I get the same Frame Rates on the VM while running a game on host as I do with just playing a game on the VM and not the Host.
  9. Alright so for background, for LTX my girlfriend wanted to go with me but she doesn't want her own gaming computer because she lives in a dorm and is lame. So i decided that I would sell my mini itx gaming machine and build a micro atx virtualized gaming machine instead. So what I'm rocking right now is a Threadripper 1900x on an Asrock X399m Taichi motherboard with 4 dimms totaling 32 Gb of ram. Where I've been running into problems is with my graphics cards. I have an rtx 2080 and a 4gb rx 480. I have so far been able to get my rx 480 to boot absolutely fine into a virtualized instance of Windows 10 using Limetech's Unraid. Where I run into problems is with Nvidia's usb controller built into their higher end cards for their virtual reality link. It kept throwing up errors at me about it not being able to separate it from the rest of the card even though I would be selecting it to add with the card. I gave up and decided to ask a friend if I could just borrow one of their rx 480's instead for the trip and temporarily trade him my rtx 2080. I have not however tried ACS override in Unraid though because somehow I missed that. I have also heard that you have to add and edited nvidia vbios if you want to use it as your main graphics output for Unraid and that there is some trickery involving making the driver not think it's virtualized. I have also heard that amd cards work fine out of the box for both of these. Since my system is entirely custom liquid cooled except for the rx 480, would it be better to just use the rx 480 as my first gpu and put the 2080 in another slot or will it be the same level of difficulty? Or am I better off just temporarily changing my loop and using two rx 480's instead?
  10. Hey everyone, I got my hands on HP DL380 G7 (2x Xeon X5650, 16gb RAM, HP Smart Array P410 512MB FBWC RAID Controller) and I was wondering if I should use virtualization (vmWare) or choose freenas/unraid and use jails or containers or whatever are they called for running the things I want. I would like to run: -Server for file storage and sharing -VPN server -Some modded minecraft server -maybe a PiHole -Plex I was first thinking about using unraid but then I read on the internet that the P410 doenst work well with ZFS + I though that the CPU power would be wasted on just unraid thats why I am leaning towards virtualization. So I am thinking about virtualized windows server that would act as file sharing server and plex, ubuntu running minecraft, some linux distro for pihole and VPN. The question I have is how should I set up the disks? I have 3*3TB HDDs and 512GB SSD. If I understand it correctly I will need to use the P410 in RAID0 (which is tottaly unsafe?) or RAID1 which would leave me with 4.5TB of actuall storage I can use for my VMs right? If I go with RAID 1 is there a point in having the SSD in? And one last questing - Is it possible to connect the HDDs without making RAID out of them? So vmWare would work with the drives instead of the RAID? PS: I am sort of new to servers so if I said something stupid, sorry about that. PPS: I know its a lot of text so thanks to anyone who actually reads this.
  11. These are my specs. I'm wondering why my virtual machines are running slow, and I will explain the details now. I have 2 W10 Pro N Virtual Machines running with Virtual box, one using 2GB of RAM and the other 3GB + firefox with 12 tabs. I have almost nothing running in the VMs, and the performance of my system by now it's going like this: Do you know why my VMs are running slow? Am I doing something wrong?
  12. Hi all, Im looking for a new way to run osx on my pc I don't know weather it is best to build a new system and run Linux then virtually host osx on that machine like in This video or is there a better way to run it on windows. I have it hosted at the minute using virtual box but it's lagy and I can't get it to work on my ultra wide monitor. Thanks in advance for any help
  13. TLDR; I'm looking to build a server to run 4 Windows VM and RDP in via thinclients. How do I license each Windows 10 install on the VM's? I'm trying to draw up a proof of concept for a small business of my family member. They have recently had an increase in employment and are struggling to get suitable laptops/desktops for each employee. Currently there are 2 Offices in different locations, 4 employee's per office. The 1st Office opened has 4 Desktops with Intel Dual Cores (unsure of exact model), 8Gb RAM. The newest office currently only has 2 laptops one of which being a private one only my family member can access. All Office work is administration, so Office apps and more intensive above that use case. I dabble with homelab virtualization projects and believe that the growing needs of this business would be perfect for a server VM configuration. I firstly plan to only deploy a single 12 or 16 Core server at the first office and moving the existing desktops to the new office. I plan on buying some older intel xeon workstation (preferably with 2 sockets) so that I can upgrade to more cores in future if we need them. I'll use ESXi to manage and create the, currently, 4 VM's and plan to either ebay some refurb'd thinclients or use WTWare on some Raspberry Pi's to use as thinclients to RDP to server. The one issue I am currently struggling with, with homelab i just create a VM for Windows 10 Pro and do license it because its a throwaway VM Project, in a business I'd have to license each VM. How would I go about doing this? I'm so confused by the Windows Server Licensing and this appears to be a replacement for VMWare ESXi, it is also very expensive and appears to only cover 2 Window Pro Vm's? Feel free to share any other information you think i may have missed in all this too? Added note, I do plan on eventually added a VPN to the server so that i could also use it to RDP from the 2nd Office as employee numbers grow. As it currently stands im more interested in replacing the 4 Desktops in Office 1 with VM's that have 3 cores each and 8Gb RAM each with possible expansion in future by making everyone dual core or upgrading CPU's down the line. BTW by dual core i mean 4 vCore as in 2 physical 4 threads.
  14. Hi everyone! I wanted to know if anybody can help me with my new workstation. We are a couple and we are planing to build a new PC for 4k Video editing, audio recording and production, engineering and architectural desing (BIM), and some soft gaming. And our goal is to have only one workstation for both of us. We use principally Davinci Resolve in ubuntu studio and we try to only use Linux. So i need advice in 2 things. First of all, Software: It's possible to have 2 independent users in linux running at the same time with independent graphics server each one?. Something like have a PC for each one. That should be the same use as run a virtual machine for the second user (like in the video with the hackingtosh VM), but due that we uses the same software, the same distro, and the same files, i think that run without a VM would be better. And like that i think i don't have to concern about to give to one or another "pc" more or less cores or ram or whatever depending in wich of us are doing the more resource hangry task. (because that will be automatically did... or not?). And well, sometimes i need a windows machine that will be a VM but that happens only once each week or less. And Second of all, Hardware: What PC i need? I think that a 3900x with 32gb of ram would be good enogh. I haven't selected yet a GPU but in this moment nvidia is less problematic with Linux than AMD. In the ideal Scenario of having one distro runninng with 2 users, is possible to have 2 GPU? one for each user. What cards would be better under 600 (that doesn't have to be the same because not rarelly we use the pc at 100% of capacity at the same time). or in what i need to think for get one? Also i have a great doubt with the storage. I have a 500gb nvme and some hard disks. Normally i use the ssd only for all the software and the hard disks for media and all the archives, but for video and audio edition, what is the recomended read speed i need from a drive for be able to work with multiple tracks? I have had crashes with my usbHD that works at 100mb/s. Do i necessarily need a SSD for save the video and audio files? Thank you very much! If anybody knows a forum for read about this multi-user things i will be happy to see.
  15. Hello everyone, To get some context, here's the hardware and detailed on my plan for the next month trying to upgrade my current machine : Be aware that I didn't try anything yet, and all this work is just preemptive research to see if my goal is achievable. To summarise, I'm going to be upgrading my GPU from a 1070 to a 2070s. Since I won't be needing the 1070 anymore (plan is to use the old stuff like cpu, ram and mb for an HTPC) I'd like to investigate the possibility of creating a headless VM with GPU passthrough to the 1070 so that my friend can play remotely on it while I'm still using the computer. I've done some initial homework and here's the checklist that I'm keeping : Even if there's some hack associated with it, Parsec (the gaming remote software I'll be using for the VM) does support headless machine The platform I'll be upgrading to (AMD ryzen 3rd gen and the MSI x570 motherboard) support AMD-V for hardware virtualisation I'm going from 16 to 32Gb of ram to account for the VM overhead and having two systems at the same time My storage solution might need some revision, but I think I might get away with what I have considering the headless VM will be used to play a verry limited amount of game (<100GB of game + OS) My Current PSU of 600W might be enough, but I'll be upgrading to something else to avoid getting poor power efficiency, especially with the Bronze one I have atm. I do have access to 2 different key of windows 10 I got access to a cheap laptop if I ever have to setup or use an hypervisor My desktop machine is wired to simplify the setup Nothing will be plugged into the 1070 in normal use, but I do have access to a old tv that I can use for debugging or setup purposes I also have some requirement on what I want to achieve : I want both my main OS and the headless one to starts whenever the computer is switched on I want to be able to game on both system at the same time, so discrete audio and video output I want my system to support Wake-on-lan as it's part of my house automation (my pc case being out of reach to actually use the power button daily) I got a few question on how to conceptually do it, I'm curious and got an IT background, so I'm fairly certain that the technicality will not be a problem here Is it more sensible to have 2 VM both running out of a bare-bone host like unraid ? or should I just try to host the headless machine through my main windows system (and is this solution even possible) What would be the overhead difference between the two solution ? Would getting a separate network card help in anyway ? I know a few things around networking, but it isn't my strong suite I'm afraid. Is there any solution that would let me edit the amount of allocated CPU cores at run time without having to restart VMs ? The idea being that the headless VM would be used just a couple of hours a day, and when it's not, getting the cores allocated to my main OS would be idea not a huge issue, but if it's not really practical, I'll go for a 3900x instead of the 3800x. Because my needs or probably unusual, I'm not expecting anyone to have an already made tutorial or anything, Virtualisation looks really deep and wide as a subject, so if anyone has any idea on which technology might be better to use, that would actually be really helpful. I'm currently looking at videos and skimming old forum posts, but I wouldn't want to ignore a quick and easy solution to my problem. Feel free to correct me on any assumption that would be wrong, and again, any input, even small ones, pointing me in the right direction are appreciated. Thanks
  16. I'm planning a build based on the recently featured Airtop 3 by @AlexTheGreatish which I also loved. The main idea of the system is to be able to run several OSs in order to carry my fully featured case as I move around to LAN parties and occasionally abroad (Router, storage, gaming, media server, workstation for content creation and 3D workloads, etc), being able to just plug and play and have my VPN running and a few Tb of data on a local server ready to be pulled by Windows and Linux. What I haven't figured out yet is what's best for the virtualized environment and the system as a hole, as I see it is possible to accomplish this with unRAID, VMware, Hyper-V and so on. My experience in virtualization is very little, but I do know I need some kind of type 1 hypervisor, so... a little help in choosing which software I should use at the core of this build? Also hardware suggestions to go along the Airtop 3 are most welcome!
  17. Dear community, I seek your advice on the topic of virtualization. Our small business has 10 PCs (1TB SSD, i7-6700K, GTX1060, WIN10 PRO) running VirtualBox serving Windows 10 workspaces for our collaborators. We use Raspberry PIs as thin clients with Remmina aplication to connect to VMs via RDP. This setup has proved itself good for several years, however we would like to try something else to see if there could be room for performance gain + an option for central VM management. I'd like to know if there is any sensible performance gain in swicthing from VirtualBox with guest additions and GPU acceleration to KVM. Our VMs run at 1920x1080 resolution mostly. Has anyone run benchmarks?
  18. Hi everyone! ( I know this is a re-posting, but I was told by some one in the CPU/ motherboard part of the forum to also post here for help) I would like to build 2 virtualised computers off 1 CPU. I have experience building normal computers. But I have no clue as to what I should be looking for when building a virtualised pc. My gut is telling me that I should be looking for some kind of virtualisation support on my motherboard. I am looking at using second hand parts. I was thinking of going with either threadripper 1950 or ryzen 7 2700 based system. I was thinking of paring that up with 2 AMD 590s (ASRock Phantom Gaming X RX 590 8G OC 8GB) In terms of HDD(samsung EVO 860) and SSD. A normal 2.5 inc SSD 2 TB(About 1TB per person) and 8TB storage(4 TB per person). G.Skill AEGIS 32 GB 3000MHZ ram (16GB each) EVGA 750W PSU ( When I went online to check out how much power I need. It was roughly 545w so to be on the safe side 750w) For the 2700 plan, I was going to go with the Asus Prime x470 pro gaming motherboard. For the Threadripper build I was looking at the Asus Rog Strix x399-E gaming But my gut is telling me that I need to be looking for something in the spec sheet. But I am not to sure as to what. Are these good for virtualized computers. If not do you have any recommendations and any hints to you can give me(build and set up. P.s I will be moving into a very small place for my wife and I thats why the 2 gamers cpu. 2 computers will take up too much space. Thanks J
  19. Hi! situation is tis: ive installed vmware and set up a win 10 vm with Borderlands 2. now, wierd thing: when i look at the sky ingame, the fps is fine and stable between 40 to 90 fps but when i try to actually play and look forwad (not even talking about mouse and keyboard movment) fps is barley 12. how can i fix? a GTX1080 takes the full load of the VM
  20. Mentlegen, After some consideration I would like to upgrade my current Linux server to serve a couple additional purposes. Currently it's running modded MC servers but I would like for it to have NAS functionality as well as Plex, mostly plain file storage and acting as a media server. So, my plan is to purchase a backplane and shove it full of ironwolf HDDs, and preferably have the drive array in RAID10. The questions I have are as follows; 1. Would using a Hypervisor benefit me in this use case? I would like to learn to configure Hypervisors as career advancements might make it useful. 2. I would like to do hardware RAID, but I'm unsure about the benefits and downsides to doing so, from what I remember, hardware RAID does not play well with hypervisors and software raid is preferable in this use case. As stated, I'm planning on using raid10 to alleviate single drive failures, but if the raid controller dies, can software rebuild/compile/understand the drives without the controller? or do I need to purchase an identical raid controller? 3. So, what NAS software / OS do you recommend? Can a single Linux OS do both NAS and Plex handling? or should I go for something like FreeNAS and Bundle the MC and Plex servers in a virtualized OS? 4. Can I segregate Plex folders? So one Plex library is available to anyone on my network, and another is only accessible to me? 5. Any benefit to buying Ironwolf HDDs over something more standard in this use case? Current server specs are as follows; Hodgepodge of SSDs and 1 1tb HDD. I5 3470, 16GB DDR3 non-ECC memory. Any help and tips would be greatly appreciated, I've done a fair bit of googling but having some feedback before I spend 500 dollars on drives and controllers would be fantastic.
  21. So, here is my predicament. Regardless of whether I was using Ubuntu, or Antergos, or now Gentoo, VirtualBox was always slow, painfully so. You might say: "You merely do not have hardware that is adequate for your goal.", however I find that to not be true, as VMware Workstation Pro ran all guests smoothly. Considering it's mostly graphical slowness, even though moving through workspaces outside of the virtual machine is still smooth, my assumption is that the fact that VMware WP allows to allocate more than 256MB of video RAM allows for guests to run smoothly. On the other hand, I see many people on YouTube running guests in VIrtualBox smoothly, so I have turned to this forum now, as I have been searching for an answer for nearly two years now without any success. I appreciate any and all help provided! EDIT: The datasheet for my laptop is in the PDF provided below. c05342156.pdf
  22. Hei guys! After being inspired by LTT videos about Unraid, I decided it's my time to dive in there as well. As I had some older hardware easily available (Dell Optiplex 790 sff), I decided to play around on that. I was able to set up IOMMU (1050ti gpu passthrough to a windows vm) on that Dell motherboard with an i5-2500s. But then I decided that I want to upgrade at least parts of my server (case, MB, CPU, additional drives, PSU). So now I have the following setup: i7-2600 GA-Z68AP-D3 rev 1.0 16GB DDR3 RAM bunch of drives, ssd's for cache This is working quite great for me as a home server (seafile, nas, plex, etc), but I also wanted to make a Windows VM with GPU passthrough to be able to do some light gaming on the living room TV. So I made all the cabling (10m hdmi, 10m active usb cables), plugged all in, went into BIOS, made sure the virtualization was enabled, but when booting into unraid, I get this: When googling about this issue with my particular motherboard, I came across this post, which does not seem too optimistic about IOMMU on this boad - link. ;( I am wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions on what to actually try before I go about switching my board again. Best regards, Peteris
  23. I have an odd project, I want to use a PC I have for running video game servers. I don't have a dedicated monitor for said PC, is there a way to vitrualize a monitor or display so I can use remote control software to access the PC? I'm new to Ubuntu but not Windows 10 or software/hardware stuff.
  24. I have started trying to create a Kali Linux VM using Oracle Virtual Box but I have run into several issues which have led to even more issues. The first issue was an error that says "The hardware virtualization is enabled in the Acceleration section of the Systems page although it is not supported by the host system. It should be disabled in order to start the virtual system." I am running an AMD Ryzen 7 2700x on an ASRock B450 Pro4 motherboard. Then I turned to the trusty web. I found an article online that explained how to shift restart and go into the firmware settings to access the BIOS on a UEFI system and enable virtualization. I did this but my screen just went black and stayed there for over an hour before I hit the power button and rebooted. but this reboot wasn't the same. When the ASRock logo was supposed to go up and let me into the UEFI, the screen went black for the 30 Second timeout, and then just booted to windows. I can no longer access my UEFI. I have checked that safe boot and quick boot are both disabled. and I have checked that HyperV isn't the problem.
  25. Hello everyone, Before anything else, I am a pc building beginner (like really, in the truest sense of the word, I am a beginner) so please forgive me for being not knowing in some stuff. Since my work benefits from a high thread count, I have decided to build a threadripper system. Although, for an improved workflow, I would like to introduce a NAS also to my setup using UNRAID. However, since I am very inexperienced on this type of subject (and computer building in general) I would like some help. My questions: 1. Can this setup be executed? (especially since I am a beginner) 2. Has anyone tried this setup before? Are there any difficulties experienced? 3. Are Linus' instructions in this video ( ) still valid? Or are there any revisions that I need to know? 4. Is this setup better than buying a separate server for my NAS? 5. Any recommended modifications to my build (below)? My planned setup: CPU: 1 x AMD Threadripper 2950x GPU: 1 x Nvidia RTX 2070 / GTX 1070 STORAGE1: 2 x M.2 500GB Samsung NAS STORAGE: 2 x 8TB SATA3 Mechanical Hardrive RAM: 4 x 16GB Ripjaws V Series PSU: 1 x HX1000i MOBO: 1 x ROG Strix X399- E Gaming If there are any more clarifications on this post please feel free to respond in this thread. To anyone that would take the time to answer and respond to my questions. Thank you very much Have a nice day!
