As the title states, I am looking for a way to clone my laptops NVMe SSD so I can run it in a Virtual Machine. So far I have had no luck. My laptop kicked the bucket recently but I was able to remove its 256GB Intel NVMe SSD. My goal is to replicate that drive so I can run it in a virtual machine. My desktop PC is running Windows 10. The SSD is an ext4 formatted Ubuntu partition. I tried to use Paragon Backup & Recovery, which did succeed in creating a `.vmdk` file. But when I tried to use it in both VMWare Workstation 15 Player and VirtualBox, both programs said "no bootable drive/media found". I know it should be bootable because I can boot to the physical SSD directly on my PC. Should I try another method or another piece of software? Thanks!

I looked through the forms and found some projects that had similar results, but I'm not sure if any of them actually do everything I'm needing. So here goes... I am an engineer, my wife is a graphic designer. We both need computers that can handle a pretty heavy load. The software that I use most is AutoDesk Inventor and she primarily uses Adobe Illustrator. I would like to build a tower that we can both use and have different accounts(we have different definitions of "clean desktop" and "file management"). The end result that I need is a single tower that we can log into our individual accounts from individual separate devices and run our programs without any major sacrifices. For example, she is in the living room designing something in Photoshop on her laptop while I'm in the garage working on something in Inventor but all the processing is being done by the tower in a closet. For right now I only need to be able to connect via LAN, but eventually a WAN connection would be cool. I don't know if this is possible or not. If so is it cost effective, do the client laptops have any specific hardware requirements(other than internet connection), and will peripherals(i.e. wacom tablet or 'gaming' mouse) work fine over the connection? Any help would be fantastic!

Hey, so I've just watched this new 2020-06-20 Linus video on linux gaming better than windows. And since I'm making a new PC, I'd like to try (again, after a couple years) to have Linux (Ubuntu or Mint) as my main host OS and daily driver, and escape the windows 10 nightmare, ...but still keep my Windows as a VM for work reasons and maybe for the odd game that doesn't run on linux (due to DRM etc). I see it's pretty easy to even convert your current OS from your current PC, into a virtual machine version of that PC, but before I jump into any rabbit holes I need to know: - Can I make my Windows VM actually have access to my Nvidia GPU? Right now it's a GTX 1660Ti but will likely become an RTX 3070 or so. -- If so, can my GPU run both the host OS and the VM? Because I don't have Intel HD graphics. (team red) -- if so, what virtual machine software do you recommend (for a linux host)? -- If so, I understand RTX support for Linux is iffy or just beginning at best, but even if RTX doesn't work on the Linux Host, will it be possible to get RTX support within the Windows VM??? Alternatively, as a last resort, and for the sake of research and completeness, will my requirements (of GPU virtualization to the VM) be met if I used a different GPU? Like some Quadro or whatever, or an AMD GPU? THANKS ^__^

Hey everyone! Im a windows user and have never used anything else but I keep on hearing about linux and I was like hey lets give it a shot! So i wanted to know - How is linux better than windows? - do I need a windows VM to game on linux? If so, how? (i have a laptop, 1060 6GB mobile, i7 8750H) Thanks everyone

Hello! I'm NightLunya, new on LTT forums. So, I'm currently studying a way to renew some hardware in my current NPO. Basically, I'm holding a small NPO with goes in manga/anime exhibitions with games and we hold booths there. If you wonder what kind of games we are running: we display Touhou Project games (and fangames about this universe) Currently, we bought several used laptops to let public playing the games freely, but we bought used one like 5 years ago. Time goes on, some start to fail but the newer games are just now asking for more ressources, which those PC can't hold anymore (and or just start to break because of their old age) So, we've started to look at 3 solutions: - Trying to set a partnership with a manufacturer as sponsor and use our booths to show their products as well (I might post another topic here to ask your advices about how to deal with sponsorship, as I would be excited to work this way instead) - Renew with used laptops, but newer gen (our current way, but we only replace the broken one to maintain our minimum quota) - Using our old laptops as "thin client" and setup a centralized server for VM gaming. This is the 3rd solution we're going to talk about here. Whatever the solution to take, we run in a very low budget and although our booth is recognized/allowed by the game dev, as it's all into "doujin" spirit, we don't have sponsorship funds about it. So this is something we can't miss at the moment. Also we live in a country which taking older computer parts in the shops or recycle parcs is stricltly forbidden, unless you are a charity NPO like Oxfam etc.... which is not our case. And the large offices which renew their IT infrastructure doesn't either give away, or if they so, it's to the organism which then redistributes to the charity stuff, etc. So, getting older hardware for free is not really possible (and you know, offices doesn't usually have computer with dedicated GPU, most of the case) Anyway, so one of the 3 solutions is to setup a gaming VM server. Now, here's my theory. I've heard that sharing GPU into several VM isn't possible except using specific cards using SR-IOV technology (basically only a few AMD FirePro does have it, or the Radeon Pro Duo, which is way out of reach) or paying a license and use Nvidia Tesla graphic cards (not even Quadro support this, I think, and as you expect, out of reach either). An alternative way might be to use PCIe passthrought but i'm not sure if it's applicable on VM. - If so, how does it works and could it be used to set one GPU on several VMs? So, we finally found that the only viable solution (for now) is using 1 graphic card by VM. First, this: - Using Bi-GPU graphic cards (like R9 285 X2 or Nvidia equivalent): is it able to set only one of the two GPU by VM? As I heard, splitting GPU resources isn't possible due to PCIe allocation (unless SR-IOV). As the Bi-GPU still on one PCIe, I don't know if this limitation still applies. My goal is to have as many VM as possible (our ideal goal is 16, but our minimum is 8]. Not many peoples still care that much about those GPU nowadays so I guess it's possible to get ones for cheap enough nowadays. Also, as you might noticed, we are focused on budget and VM. Actually no physical input except network will be plugged in the server (or only basic stuff for monitoring) As the games requires more ressources but still are low specs required, we won't need a super high hardware requirement (The laptop are basically Vista-era, some are Vista-capable. But it's all entry-tier 10 years old PC at least, half of them are running in integrated board, the other have low-entry dedicated graphics) I've seen about LTT's video about using Mining graphic card, with modded drivers, being allowed to game with passing through the Integrated GPU of the processor. But in our case, this would be used in a VM instead. As those will be used in VM, I don't care about the missing I/O panel. So - Is it possible to use mining, I/O less GPU (which are very cheap compared to standard ones) to use as dedicated GPU, usable in gaming, in VM, with the modded drivers? The P106-100 is clearly enough for our needs (the current used GPU used ingame are usually Geforce GT210 era or something like that, so a GTX 1060-equivalent is clearly good enough) and maybe I'll contribute to give them a proper second life and avoid e-waste If yes, then my plan is to basically setup a server with dual socket CPU, set up like 2x8 CPU core /2x16 CPU thread (like old Ivy Bridge or Haswell CPU servers, those are still capable and cheap enough), set up like 48 or 64 GB of RAM and then use all the PCIe x16 lines available (I've seen motherboard with 7 or 8 PCIe x16) and setup a GPU in each of them. The VM will be set with 2 cores/4 threads, 3 or 4 GB of RAM and the dedicated graphic cards, which will be plenty enough. The server will be in LAN, no Internet (or only for update stuff), so we can setup a Gigabit (or 10 Gbps?) router. We plan to setup 8 VM minimum. - Minimum requirements for the laptop to be used as thin client ? (because if our old laptops aren't enough to handle this, then there is almost no point to make this project) - Which storage will I need ? Will SSD mandatory or can we run with HDD in (soft)RAID ? (we expect to use not more than 128 Go per VM) - Which bandwitch will I need to transfer all data needed to be used in VM (display won't exceed 720p or 900p at 60fps) ? (I expect the motherboard to have 4 integrated Gigabit Ethernet, will it be enough?) I heard that even a Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) would be enough per client, as everything except input and display will be managed on the server. But I expect a Gigabit will be mandatory. - Recommended hypervisor OS ? (Windows OS will be used for the VM) Oh and in overall: - Is this project totally stupid ? If yes, what are your alternatives ? - Did I missed critical problem about delay, realistic project, or am I just thinking wrong about it ? If in case we plan to launch the project, I'll make sure to take lots of pictures or even videos and throw at you Thank you very much.

So Linus did that video where he made 2 gaming virtual pcs from the same system, which was really cool, but I was wondering if it would be possible to make a server style pc and have maybe 3 or 4 virtual gaming machines for all the kids in my house. Would this be something that's possible? Assuming each vm would get 4 cores and a certain amount of memory and a gpu each, would it be possible to use a server motherboard and CPU to make something like this?

Hello to all, I have a question, i am software developer and my wife is Graphic Designer. We would like to upgrade our computers and i came out with the crazy idea of buying an iMac Pro with 10 core Intel Xeon 32GB RAM AMD VEGA 64 and 2TB ssd. The main concept is for both of us to simultaneously work on the IMAC, i will use the extra screen as separate desktop with another set of keyboard and mouse, also when i need to use windows i can use parallels on second screen. Will that work? is the I MAC pro capable on working intensive workload in a scenario of BIG Databases (Average of 4GB) while working on Photoshop and illustrator with many layers and video editing (not rendering)? Will Linus be able to create this scenario? It will be more amazing if this setup could handle simultaneous gaming as well.

Hey there! I want to bring my grandparents nearer to computers and especially gaming. Therefore, I am planning to do an event where I let my grandparents play Minecraft together on one system. In order to realize that with the lowest cost I want to use my current system. My plan is to create several vms so that they can play all together at my single PC. (just like 7 gamers 1 CPU) At the very best, I can be the host and guide them through Minecraft by playing with them. So a 5 Gamers 1 CPU would be perfect. I guess there shouldn't be any problems in terms of hardware power since I am planning to run vanilla Minecraft without any texturepack or mods. The 12 threads should easily handle Minecraft, but I am wondering if my GPU can handle even that undemanding workload. I have never created a vm before, however I guess that is not the hardest part to solve. So here are my questions: Can it actually work in theory? Should I use unRAID to realize that? What is the best way to do it? Any suggestions/tips? I haven't planned or tryed anything yet, I just want to figure out whether I should actually try it or not. My system is: - Ryzen 1600X (4GHz) (cooled with be quiet! Silent Loop 240mm) - EVGA GTX 1060 6GB SC - G.Skill Trident Z RGB 2933MHz (16-18-18-38) - MSI B350 Gaming Pro Carbon - Samsung 850 EVO 500GB - be quiet! Straight Power 11 600W - Windows 10 64x Thanks for every help!:D

Hey all, Apologies in advance for my ignorance on this subject. So I've been tasked with finding a "creative solution" at work. Essentially, we have six-to-eight TVs set up in the office to monitor call logs, stats, etc - each team has their own TV that displays the information they need to monitor, which can vary. Currently we have one computer per TV running in the server room with a complicated extension system to get the video output to the right TV. These are old machines that make a lot of noise, use a fair amount of power, and take up a bunch of space. My idea is to build a server that runs multiple Virtual Machines; one for each TV displaying whatever that team needs, accessible via remote desktop connection if changes need to be made. My main problem is that I simply don't know enough about servers or virtual machines, and so I have no idea whether this is even possible. Has anyone attempted this before? If it's possible, is it even worth it? What kind of system requirements am I looking at? Any help is greatly appreciated

Good afternoon, I'm looking to do a somewhat complex system build, I don't have a solid spec in mind which is why I need a second opinion. What I intend to accomplish with this system is this: 1. To run 4-6 cameras at 1080p 8 FPS recording 24/7 2. To run a media server that my family can remote into anywhere and view family photos, videos, etc. in one central location Currently, my plan is to take some NAS machine like a FreeNAS Mini box or a Synology box and run Windows for a recorder manager software such as Blue Iris while running a Windows VM for my family to RDP into as regular users and access a pooled drive. Alternatively, I had also thought of doing a lower tier Ryzen or Threadripper build, but priced out with the features I would need was pretty expensive. The idea here was to do a 4X6TB RAID 10 array and partition the pool of drives into an 8TB partition for recorded video and 4TB for media storage. I guess my question is 1. Is this even possible with the way I'd like to do this? and 2. Is this recommended or are there better ways to do this? To me, the hardware in the pre-built NAS boxes doesn't seem like enough, and what would be adequate is terribly expensive. Most of the CPU load would be for video encode/decode, but I'd like to leave at least 2C/4T or 4C/8T for simultaneous multi-user login on the VM. Any and all help is definitely appreciated, thank you in advance!!

Hello all Am in the lookout for a new lightweight laptop (key ingredient), will be used for Cloud, Office, web dev and possibly 2 simultaneous instances of Virtual PC machines (with help of a NAS for the actual images) so no actual storage is necessary so here's what am looking for: Starting of at the most important spec: Lightweight Backlit keyboard 256GB SSD minimum 8GB minimum i5 U Processor 8th gen minimum (quad core) ~$1200 Does the spec sound fit for purpose or am I out of my depth? I've been looking at XPS's and Asus Zenbooks, but there are sooo many models and XPS13s seem to have disappointing reviews with performance and bezel issues, while XPS15's are out of my budget (at the moment). Asuses(???!) look great but they don't have backlit keyboards? like seriously?!! Inputs are greatly appreciated. Thanks guys Monty

Hello, I am concerned about privacy and security so I have decided to use a Virtual Machine, run Tor from there and at the same time have a Vpn at the ready. One problem. Originally I was going to use a Vpn from within the VM, however I have decided to go with a Linux OS and it is kind of difficult to find a free vpn service. My solution would be to run the Vpn from the host OS (Windows 10), then boot up the VM and run Tor. Would that work? Would it essentially, make my ISP not able to track my usage?

A while ago I attempted to build a Hackintosh for the family computer. Aside from me and my dad, my whole family was used to our iMac and OSX. It got old, so I used my skills to build one rather than buy another similarly spec'd one for over $5000 or whatever. Plus, I got to do my one and only white build! It has an i5 quad-core and a GTX 1050. I failed, though. She settled for me just installing Win 10 so the kids could use it. I tried running it in VMWare Workstation, but it was glitchy and bad. Here's my question, is there a way that I can, not dual-boot into Win and Mac, but like, set them both up to have a seamless transition without having to reboot the PC? Like, assign each user to a different OS? I had something like that going, as when you were signed as any of my brothers, it was Win10, but when you signed in as my mother, the VM was automatically open and it went right into the OSX desktop. But like I said, it was glitchy and slow. Anyone ever done something like this before? It would mean that my Mom could actually use the office computer comfortably AND nobody else would have to settle for Mac!

Hey guys, can anyone make a highly modified Windows OS that basically runs VMs by overlaying the UI with VMware or VirtualBox? A lighter one, that only shows like VMware or VirtualBox instead of the normal Windows desktop. So when you Boot up, you can choose your OS with the VMs that you have set up. I was into VMs quite a lot and I'd like a lighter version of Windows 10 with basically just VM support here and there to run different OS-es. But I can't code like you guys... Just an Idea, if anyone made something like this? I would like a copy of that modified OS. Thanks...

Hello. I'm going to make a "one pc 2 gamers" like Linus did and I have a couple of questions. My current specs: GPU: Asus RX 470 4 GB (undervolted to 1025mV) CPU and heatsink: i5-6500 with SilentiumPC Fera v3, AM4 compatible RAM: HyperX 2x8 GB RAM DDR4 2133MHz MOBO: MSI H110m Pro-D PSU: SilentiumPC Vero L1 600W 2 monitors: 1920x1080 (DisplayPort, 75Hz) and 1680x1050 (HDMI from GPU to DVI monitor) Case: SilentiumPC Regnum RG1 Disks: 1x Seagate 1TB 7200RPM, 1x old Hitachi 250GB from laptop, 1x 750GB 5400RPM disk from laptop ...and sell mobo, cpu and stock cooler What I want to do: GPU1: Asus RX 470 4 GB + undervolt after GPU pass-through GPU2: 1050ti or 1060 + undervolt after GPU pass-through CPU: Ryzen 7 1800x with SilentiumPC Fera v3 from old PC - I think i7-8700k hasn't enough cores for this RAM: HyperX 2x8 GB RAM DDR4 2133MHz + 1/2x8 GB RAM DDR4 3200MHz MOBO: MSI X370 Gaming Plus (?) or Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K5(?) Same PSU, that should hold this PC without OC. +1 Full HD 75Hz monitor Same case Maybe one SSD for host (?) I'll use that PC with my sister - we don't have space for second PC, even for ITX case (and I don't want to spend more money for buying low profile GPU's). I'm playing some games like Fallout 4, Witcher 3 or GTA 5, my sister wants to play some new games either but I don't think that I want to buy better GPU's - I used that RX and it worked fine for two games, CPU had problems (I used IBIK aster software). I want to make one PC with Linux as host and two VM Windows 10. 2 GB RAM for host, rest for two VM. 1 core for host, 3 and 4 cores for 2 VM. What about performance and 24 PCI-E lanes with these GPU's? Will it have same performance like my current i5-6500? What about dual channel? Is it working separately when I put 2133 in 1 and 3 slot + 3200 in 2 and 4? What about splitting USB devices and audio? Wait for new Ryzen or buy 1800x? What do you think about this?

So i want to connect my VM to internet using NAT. i know it is possible with something like bridged but i want to do it in NAT for reasons. when i tried by simply selecting the NAT option shown in the screenshot it does not connect. i tried to ping my router and i get host unreachable error with my static IP. VM ware NAT service also seem to be working fine in the host machine. what else should i check in order to get this working. I have this VM setup in another PC and in that it works fine by simply selecting that NAT option.

I understand I can use Android x86 in a Virtual Machine, but will I be able to download and install any apps from the Google Play Store? Not really looking into buying a new phone (Can't afford to do so anyways), so I figured this is the best option I have. So, is it worth the time and effort, or should I start saving up for a smartphone?

So I'm trying to run a virtual machine of Mac OSX El Capitan on Windows 10. I have a Ryzen 7 1700, 8GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 300Mhz, and an Asus Strix RX 480 8GB. Everything seemed fine up until when I clicked to run the vm and i got an error saying "A fault has occurred causing a virtual CPU to enter the shutdown state. If this fault had occurred outside of a virtual machine, it would have caused the physical machine to restart. The shutdown state can be reached by incorrectly configuring the virtual machine, a bug in the guest operating system, or a problem in VMware Player. Click OK to restart the virtual machine or Cancel to power off the virtual machine." I have tried turning on and off virtualization on in my bios, as well as smt, and I cannot get it to run. I have the VM configured to use 4GB of ram, and 4 cores, and 4 cores with 8 threads. Any ideas as to why this won't boot for me?

I need some help and some info regarding about what I would like to do. I have 6 computers, 5 of them have the isos I need to keep (from xp to 8.1) and the kicker is that I would like to migrate the operating systems from their old boot disks to a fast virtual disk. Hence Physical to Virtual. Would it be as simple as creating a backup image and then cloning/migrating the backup image to a v-disk or is there some voodoo-butter that prevents a noob like me from keeping that I hold dear throughout the years? I'm not going to just throw the computers away along with the operating systems like that, at least not without keeping the image.

I have a ASUS X99-A motherboard and i am wondering if i should overclock my RAM from 2400MHz CAS 16 since i am now running a windows virtual machine and almost constantly a mint linux 18.2 virtual machine? games seem to not really be affected at all my build has 32GB of DDR4 a i7-5930k at stock and almost all my SATA ports filled up the reason for the X99 board is upgradeablity and the more SATA and USB ports on it than the mainstream board had. i use virtualbox for virtual machine and imgburn for burning discs while deamon tools lite for making images i have noticed when making disk images in .iso the computer is slow when i am also running the linux vitual machine with 2 cores and 8GB of system RAM and a 128MB virtual graphics chip should i upgrade to something like 64GB of RAM or 48GB of RAM or is it my RAM speed or is it a slow CPU as making disc images shouldn't be a GPU task and games run fine while the Virtual machines run in the back ground
