Some backstory: I had a laptop for school, but it broke beyond repair and I don't currently have the money for a new one. However, I did get a Pixel C Android tablet with the keyboard and have been using that as a laptop replacement. IT works perfectly fine for taking notes and such, but being in the Computer Science field, I'm pretty limited (I've been using the school's lab computers for IDE's and programming while I'm not at home with my desktop). This was normally OK until I started taking a Unix course and a Web App development course, which both use Linux. To make a long story short, I can't run a VM of Linux on the tablet, so I've resorted to connecting to my desktop through the Chrome Remote Desktop app, and then running my VirtualBox VM there. As you can imagine, it's painfully slow. IS there a way I can set up my tablet to remotely connect to the VirtualBox VM I have instead of through Chrome Remote Desktop and then running the VM? Would it be faster or slower than what I'm currently doing?

Am trying to install a Fedora26-GNOME iso in VirtualBox on my relatively new Windows 10 machine and keep running into this obnoxious boot error: boot_image = vmlinuz crashed At this point I am not evening getting that warning anymore, just a blank black screen in the VB Guest window. What is further annoying is that the Fedora26-Cinnamon spin seems to work just fine in VirtualBox, as do the latest versions of OpenSUSE, Scientific Linux and some Ubuntu spins. So I don't think it is specifically VirtualBox nor the Linux Kernel being shipped with Fedora26. But I don't know enough about the guts of linux distros to diagnose it further than that.

I there! WARNING Hopefully, my title make sense. Sorry it it doesn't, I'm not the one who will configure the machine, but I'm pretty sure that's what our IT guy said to me, but I could be wrong. SHORT VERSION We need a new file server / web environment / VM machine and I was thinking about a Ryzen 7 since it's a lot cheap than current Intel offerings while still having high-core count (and supporting-ish ECC memory if we decide to go for that). I want to know if any of you tried something similar with good result. Especially concerned with AMD compatibility / performance with ZFS / Linux / VM machine and ease of setup, vs our old Intel machine. LONG VERSION I work at a web agency and we are currently looking to upgrade our local dev/file server. It is used simultaneously by ~10 programmers + any designers / project manager who needs to access a files. We also send links to our clients for approval before anything goes live. Our current setup is something that they made at the very beginning of the business: A old Core 2 Duo, I don't remember the specific SKU 6gb of DDR2 some WD reds 4-5To in raid (Those will be use in the new build) The system is used daily for 3 things: As a simple file server, for our development files such as images, texts, videos, .psd, .ai, etc etc. As a Linux web server. Roughly half of them are customized Wordpress websites and the other half is our own in-house CMS. As a VM machine. Sometime we need to setup VMs to accommodate certain clients needs. Probably around 2-5 VMs would be up at the same time (That's something we are currently unable to do). Our old server is not even thaaaat terrible, but we start having longer load time for our dev websites, backups during the night are not done when we arrive next morning, and running even just one VM is just not an option. I searched online, and people tends to say that in the past, AMD was not best suited for these tasks, but what about Ryzen? Did anyone here tried something similar with good result? I am especially concerned with AMD compatibility / performance with ZFS / Linux / VM machine and ease of setup, vs our old Intel machine. If you think I missed any relevant information, ask bellow, I'll update this post. Thanks!

Here's an alternative way to install windows 95 for those still having issues installing windows 95 manually without the floppy setup disk what you need: .DOS on a floppy or on an image (.flp .img) .Windows 95 cd .VMWARE player (it's free) or virtualpc (I recommend VMWARE) .Magiciso (the free trial version will do) .a copy of MSCDEX.EXE and oakcdrom.sys (both can be found online) MSCDEX.EXE: http://www.techadvice.com/tech/M/MSCDEX.htm oakcdrom.sys: https://goo.gl/YTZ3nL Magiciso: http://www.magiciso.com/download.htm step 1 create a new virtual machine (make sure to add a floppy image drive if you are using vmware) step 2 put your dos floppy/image in or mount it and install dos step 3 download and install the free version of magiciso open magic iso go to new - floppy - 1.44 find a copy of mscdex.exe find a copy of oakcdrom.sys (generic cd rom driver that works with dos.. might have to try another if it doesn't work) RENAME the oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys drag both these files into magic iso on the floppy disk we just created save the file close magic iso find the file we just saved in your explorer change the extension from .ima to .flp (if you are using vmware) or .img (if you are using virtualpc) (if you can't see the extensions you're going to need to change your folder options to show extensions) google it. it's easy to do step 4 go back to your virtual machine mount the floppy image we just created a:\ copy mscdex.exe c:\ copy cdrom.sys c:\ (don't forget to rename oakcdrom.sys to cdrom.sys in step 3) step 5 find config.sys in your c drive type: edit config.sys now add a line that says this device=c:\cdrom.sys /d:mscd001 exit and save step 6 find autoexec.bat in your c drive type: edit autoexec.bat now add a line that says this c:\mscdex.exe /d:mscd001 exit and save step 7 restart the computer or virtual machine step 8 we're still not done yet now move to your c drive and type mscdex.exe: /d:mscd001 /M:5 /V /L:d /S /K (this part /M:x refers to the amount of buffers your drive has.. it's either 4 or 5. usually 5) step 9 create a blank floppy image either in vmware or magic iso then mount that new one put your windows 95 cd in the cd drive type: d:\ setup.exe step 10 it should be booting windows 95 now now you might run into troubles when it tries to install the other drivers it might ask you for windows floppies even if you're using the cd version which I never understood but anyways, you can find all of these drivers on the windows 95b cd if you have it they're all in cab files so you'd need to extract them 1 by 1 and put them on floppy images to use them. (huge pain) but I actually just got it to load the drivers off the win95 cd by just trying it over and over again until it worked. it might have been because I either did or didn't restart after putting in the windows 95 cd can't remember, but I'd try both if you're having trouble all in all windows 95 is incredible wonky to install in a virtual machine. I highly recommend using VMWARE and not virtual pc for this one. If you didn't have a hard time installing this.. you got incredible lucky make sure you check to make sure windows95 is seeing your cd drive if not go to the add new hardware wizard in the control panel and see if that detects it (Note: I tried to install it without installing MS-DOS first the first time by using fdisk and format then creating the autoexec.bat and config.sys manually. Even though I did this right I ran into problems when windows started installing. Installing dos before hand made it run a lot smoother for some reason. Ask around and find a copy from a friend. A lot of people still have a copy lying around that they don't care about)

Looking to replace my Dell sever with a new build. (Specs Attached) We have been operating our home business with our apx. 10yr old Dell Server very reliably & essentially trouble free. The server does seem to slow down with multiple connections therefore we don't connect more than 4 Desktops at a time. We have built, in-house all of our desktops as if they were gaming PC's for performance and multitasking. All of these PC's work great so we are considering doing away with the Windows Server licencing and building a Windows 10 based server. Additionally we use remote desktop with a virtual PC to connect one of our older database DOS based programs to the server. Here is a list of things we are dissatisfied with our current server Slow Data transfer (Our in house network is fiber to CAT5 with a new adapter) Slow multi-user operation Server closet produces a lot of heat (1 server W/ 1 processor only) I would like to build a new AMD Ryzen based PC as is seems to support the features of we need in a server. It is also my understanding that Ryzen supports ECC memory which is necessary for a server. I would like a few opinions and recommendations on a this build. Here are a few questions that could also use recommendations. Do I need Virtual Box? Can we use all SSD's Is AMD more power efficient than Intel/Xenon? What MOBO supports RAID for the OS and RAID for the Storage drives? Is there a MOBO that supports an M.2 RAID? Would a separate RAID controller card be better for the storage drives? Will this setup be as reliable as a server? Thanks & all answers and recommendations are welcome. DxDiag.txt

Greetings everyone, So the other day I was trying to run VirtualBox but as soon as I started the virtual machine it crashed and my system restarted. Earlier I was trying to run Nox Player and it showed an error of 'Can't run virtual machine'. So I configured in the BIOS setting to enable Vt-d in the BIOS features and enable Hyper-v in windows features setting but the problem persists. I can't figure out what to do. Am I missing something or am I doing something wrong. My plan is to run Android in the background as I work on my regular applications. System specification: i7 6700 Ga-H170-gaming3 16gb Radeon 7870 2gb.

Yo whattup newb here, I was watching Linus's 7 gamers 1 CPU video and it got me thinking as I am just about to move into a new house and was planning out the server infrastructure. Is it more cost-effective to build a decent watercooled rig in the cupboard and run VMs on monitors and TVs around the house from it, or just give each room its own dedicated machine? Surely it would be more cost effective because if you spend money on a living room entertainment rig but don't use it half the time, while the rig in my room needs more RAM for league, more resources can be allocated to my VM and taken away from the living room VM, which would be impossible with two standalone builds. I think it would more time consuming as initial setup though, and I'm also afraid to have a single point of failure for every TV, workdesk monitor and NAS in the house. It's a bit risky to me. Am I along the right lines here or just completely overthinking it? Cheers, G.

Im running a windows XP virtual machine through virtual box on windows 10. I have two games im currently trying to run from their discs. Anno 1503 AD the new world. And Command and Conquer Red Alert 2. They seem to install just fine but wont play and the overall performance of the VM itself is less than desirable. If anyone knows anything that can help me or even a way to run these games on windows 10 without a VM. It would be greatly appreciated. Ive missed these games. Ill include screenshots of the VMs info and my system info.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask this I'm wondering if I can modify Windows 10 on VMware to have the settings of normal windows? I need it so application doesn't detect the system running from VM - because I want to play a game running on host and VM. Problem is, when I run it on VM the application says "Sorry, this application can't run under virtual machine" thanks.

1. Budget & Location Budget is between the £1500.00 - £2000.00 mark, the current specs I have drawing up are slightly and would like to bring the cost done. Located in the UK 2. Aim The machine is going to be accessed via RDP and I will be running several VM’s on the machine, the ideally situation would be to have at most at any one time 10 VM’s running. The VM instance would be varying between Win 7 – Win 10 but generally will be Win 10. There will be no specially software or hardware running on these machines other that a web browser and the sites that will be accessed will be loading flash based games. I currently use my current PC and can get at most 3 machines running before my system starts taking a knock. The VM settings are 2/2 2GB-4GB and the VM the system is maxing out the CPU and as long as I have an SSD and not using the VM on a HDD the disk usage is fine. As far as I can see the load is handled by the CPU & not the GPU. 3. Monitors As this system will not be accessed physically none except for setup. 4. Peripherals Will require VMware on the machine. 5. Why are you upgrading? As my current machine is not able to handle this and need to increase the number of VM’s being run. The current list I have specc’d out is this, the case was just put there for a rough costing purpose and would like to change it to something nicer and the GPU I am unsure of what to go for and what would be best fit for my use, I had originally intended on following the 40 Thread Xeon monster guide but I have my concerns about the ES cpu’s and further unable to find the steppings listed 40 Thread Xeon Monster UK pcpartpicker

So I've got my system finally set up all the way, got my second gpu and usb card in the mail and installed, got the second vm up and running. Last thing I need is to share a drive. Basically I have 2 vms running on kvm on top of an ubuntu server install. I'm using virsh to manage them. Each vm has a dedicated gpu and usb card, a dedicated virtual disk on an ssd for OS, and a dedicated virtual disk on a raid 0 array for personal storage. The first vm also has access to a second virtual image on the raid 0 that's meant to be shared between the 2 vms so that games need only be installed once to save space. Before I try giving access to that disk to the second vm tonight I wanted to ask if anyone's done this and if it's okay or there are any caveats.

Hello all, Running my own server on a Supermicro chassis and motherboard, and came across an issue after fudging up a virtual machine. I backed up the data I needed, shut it down, undefined the machine, and deleted the qcow2 and xml files for it. I then updated the host machine and rebooted that. After trying to build another VM to replace the borked up one, I am getting an error. I have asked on Reddit and Ask Ubuntu as well, but haven't gotten anywhere, just trying to cast a net out to see if anyone may be familiar with this... I am VERY new to Ubuntu here or command line OS at all, so I am not really at all sure what to do here, and googling hasn't helped in the least. I just ran an update on my Ubuntu Server 14.04 machine and rebooted. I haven't ever touched the sudoers file, so I am suspecting some installed package did, then my update the other day tried to change that, but not sure, best guess. I am trying to create a virtual machine, and I get this error, but I have NO WAY to make a choice, it just uses default choice after about 5 milliseconds, doesn't wait for user input. Is there some other way I can FORCE this modified sudoers thing to pop up again so that I can view the differences, or just replace it? The command I used that got this output is the following: sudo ubuntu-vm-builder kvm trusty --hostname TEST-vm Here is the full output of the message in question. Hi, I am new to the forum,so please bear with me. I would consider myself a noob to the virtualization, building server, but my boss doesn't want to out source, and would prefer me to do it, since i am better than anyone else when it comes to the computers in the company and he would pay for my training, So i am eager to do it. So this is a deal. At my work place i have been asked to build a server that will be able to run multiple Virtual Machines, Each VM will be dedicated to a costumer that needs to have a access to it and have a usable experience, nothing heavy but the program that will be installed on it will require a minimum 4GB of RAM and i would say 2 Cores.(Or One Physical and One Virtual.) What would you advice me to build for them or buy, and which operating system it should run (Windows 10 or Server), also what kind of Virtual environment it would be best to run it in. Besides that i was asked to look in to the SQL, it would be appreciated if i could get directed. Now, the real thing is i need to start from scratch.

Hey people, i´ve always liked spam mails. They tend to have a hidden beauty inbetween the lines and realy "good" spam mail are being moved into a "nice spam" folder. Now sometimes i want to open their attachments but i am not stupid doing this on my windows pc. I know VMs are capsuled from your pc and you can do crazy stuff there without harming your pc. Am i safe opening spam attachments in an virtualbox VM? Am i unsafe if i connect it to the web? I don´t want to risk anything and i am pretty adept on computer stuff so maybe someone of you did this before and can give me some tips? Thanks

So I'm looking for a new workstation that I can take to school with me and I have been looking at the Lenovo ThinkCentre M725s SFF Desktop computer, the dell OptiPLex 7060, or the dell Precision 3430. The cpu in the lenovo is the AMD Quad-Core Ryzen 5-2400, the cpu in both of the dells is the Intel Six-Core i5-8500. I plan on upgrading the ram myself to have the max of 64GB, unless I am able to fit more in there. Which System has the better CPU for Virtualization/ Running of VM's. The reason I'm looking at these systems because they are small enough to travel with, I'd take my full tower desktop if I could.

Hey everyone, Thanks for taking the time to read my post. After watching the multiple editors one case and two gamers one CPU videos by linus, in addition to being pestered by my partner to play on my PC as she doesn't have her own, I've been inspired to possibly do something similar myself. I would like to build an unraid based VM that can run a few things. First, I'd like to run a plex server. Second, I'd like to have two gaming VMs. Lastly, as I'm a data scientist, I'd like a third VM that would use the resources of the two gaming PCs to run models when needed. Currently I have a pc with the following specs and I would add another cheap Gpu (e.g. GT 710) to run unraid and an extra 16GB of RAM so both gaming PCs would have 16GB. Processor: 7820x (8c16t) @4.7GHz all core OC Gpu: gtx 1080 x2 RAM: 16GB corsair vengeance Several SSDs and a large capacity HDD. My plan for the VMs would be to give the two gaming PCs 6 processing cores and the plex server 4 to allow for transcoding and 4K playback. My main questions are as follows: 1) What performance hit could I expect to see in comparison with my current set up, bearing in mind many games SLI support sucks and I run games at 4K? 2) If both the gaming PCs are off, how would the power consumption of the plex server compare to that of a raspberry pi? Does unraid still power both the primary GPUs even when the VMs are off? 3) Would it be possible to have the third VM that uses all my system resources if the cores and Ram are assigned to other VMs (even when both gaming VMs are powered off). Thanks again for taking the time to read and reply to this.
