Hello everyone. I recently built a gaming rig using an MSI 970 gaming motherboard. When I first built the rig the USB 3.0 slots worked fine and were transferring the speed they are suppose to, but suddenly one day i noticed it was taking a long time to transfer files back and forth with my external hard drive (which is a Western Digital My Book which supports USB 3.0.) I even made sure i am using the USB 3.0 cord that came with it. I am a little confused trying to figure out what this could possibly be or what is causing this to happen. I have all the drivers installed so its not that either. If someone with the same problem or with a solution could reply, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, I am caching up on technology and Thunderbolt 3 cought my interest. I have read Wikipedia, Intel and Thunderbolt Technology side but I feel information is missing on the pure technological specification. I write this topic after watching LG 5K Display for Mac - A PC User's Perspective from LTT. The explanation of displayport lanes into the thunderbolt is not satisfying for me. I think thunderbolt 3 can use more details. Referring to the above video, how does Thunderbolt manage to channel "two displayport" and USB 3 data to the monitor ? My guess would be an encapsulation of the different protocol across the link. My first investigation with Thunderbolt 3 is with USB : I wonder how the Thunderbolt 3 was providing USB connectivity. I thought that the Thunderbolt controller could use one USB port from my chipset however it is not the case. The Thunderbolt 3 controller exposes a new PCIe USB XHCI Controller when a USB cable is connected. See screenshot. I would be curious to know what the system reports when other devices are connected like the dongles LTT reviewed. Regards, Stan

Hi, I was looking to tidy up the inside of my PC a bit, and would like to know if any of you know where I can buy a low profile USB 3.0 internal cable that is white. I found what I was looking for, pictured below, but would like to know if anyone knows where I can get a white one of these. Thanks

1: what usb 3.0 type c PCIe card should I get? My motherboard only has one slot and while I could simply pick up a hud...ideally I plan on picking up a few Elgato HD60 s capture cards (one for my camera, one for a second computer, and/or console if a friend comes by). Down the road there could be four or more capture cards connected to my dedicated streaming computer for special events. (in a perfect world setting the more typc c connections on a single chip the better) 2: on the same note as the usb 3.p type c PCIe card; what is a good sata 6gbps PCIe card? Using the m.2 connections Sata 3/4 and 5/6 will be disabled on my motherboard. I need additional storage for raid, general storage, my NZXT Hue+, fan controller, and bluray read and write drive. (in a perfect world setting world setting the more sata connections on a single chip the better). my motherboard: Z170A MGaming Titani from MSI

Does anyone know faster way to transfer lots of files than connecting over crappy mtp protocol? I have Asus ZS570KL (UFS 2.0) connected over usb 3.0, Samsung 850 EVO in laptop and I'm copying 180gb of data (big and small files) to phone and it takes forever. I'd expect transfer speed closer to actual USF/SATA/USB 3.0 limit rather than pathetic 20MB/s achieved over mtp... In the past I used to copy files over NFS over wifi but now I don't have rooted phone and I don't want to root it yet so I think i need to find better way to do that. I'm using Linux on PC

Hello, I tried copying 1.9TB worth of videos from my 3TB 3.5" Seagate Barracude 7200rmp drive to my 6TB 3.5" Seagate Archive HDD v2 (ST6000AS0002) 5900 rpm drive. I am using Ubuntu 16.04, both drives are formatted in ext4, the 3TB one is connected internally via sata 3 and the 6TB one over usb 3.0. The video files are between 300MB and 3GB. At first everything went fine. I was getting a transfer speed of 130MB/s. I left the house when it had transferred around 200GB. When I came back it was transferring at 46MB/s. Since then I can't get it to write above 50MB/s regardless of what I try to copy. I also tried copying from the 6TB drive to the ssd where to os is installed and the max I get is 65MB/s, so the read speeds are also extremely low. I used a bunch of 5GB video files to make sure that I'm getting optimal speeds (though if I am not wrong 300MB, which is the size of the smallest video I have, should also be good enough). When I do the benchmarks with the disk utility provided by Ubuntu it get normal speeds or at least I believe they are normal. (see results below). So my question are : Does anybody know what is causing this decrease in performance? Is it normal? If it is not how can I fix it? I read only a bunch of forum posts and articles only. I understand that the drives get slower the more you fill them, but from what they were saying you start to see a drastic decrease in performance once the drive is 85% full, but mine is not even half full (1.9TB / 5.6TB). Benchmarks: access time 13.63ms A) at 1MiB 21MB write and 63MB read B) at 10MiB 46.5 write and 125MB read C) at 100MiB 113.4MB write and 134.5MB read D) at 500Mib 134.4MB write and 138.5MB read Thank You

hi everyone... i recently build a new system for myself and my motherboard is asus rampage v edition 10 and my main pc drive is samsung M.2 960 pro 512... i tested my external hard drives write speed (both WD my passport and silicon power A80) on motherboards USB3.0 connectors and it was around 70 MB/s... then to increase the speed i changed the drive policy from quick removal to performance (due to the guides in internet)... after doing so the transfer write speed increased to around 200 MB/s ,,, but the problem is that this 200 speed is only for a few seconds at the beginning of transfer process and after a few seconds the speed drops to around 70 again... can anyone help me with the problem? how can i fix this issue? thanks,,,

Hi all, I've been having problems with my build (Strangely I've had a lot but thanks guys for helping me out) but they are fixed now. My Windows 10 corrupted completely so goodbye XP memes and of course, my games. So I blew the dust from my oldie but goodie Windows 7 disk then transfered the install files to a USB using a laptop. After that I installed all drivers Video driver, Sound, USB 3.0, ect... But when attempting to use USB 3.0 it doesn't recognize ANY device. It does deliver power because I tried a USB Light and It powered no problems. I have 4 usb 3.0 on the MB and 1 in the Headers. USB 2.0 Works perfectly. Specs: MSI H81M-E34 2x2 GB DDR3L HD 7850 1 GB G3258 at Stock( I didn't win silicon lottery ) Hyper Evo 212 430W watt PSU Thanks in advance EDIT:Here are some screenchots

Hi guys! It's my first time here, I'm French and I don't have a lot of skills in English and in hardware, I just know the basic. ? So recently, I bought an acer aspire vx15 on rue du commerce ( https://m.rueducommerce.fr/produit/acer-aspire-vx-15-vx5-591g-558z-noir-29072208#moid:MO-2428AM70609592 ) with Linux installed into it ( not gnu Linux, not ubuntu... just Linux.) I installed windows 7 because my oncle is an computer scientist and he give it to me.? As you probably see, my new computer doesn't have USB 2.0 port , only USB 3.0 x3 and a type c connector but they bolth not working in win 7. I used a software which changes the ISO files for integrate usb 3 drivers and it works for the installation, but now I have my computer with win7, 4usb port which doesn't work and no wireless connection ( my wireless card need drivers for function .) I don't know what to do, please help me?? Thanks!!

Hey guys, I got a question, I got a project in which I have to submerge a USB 2.0 hub into a USB 3.0 hub. How am I supposed to do that? Can I just hook the D- from the 2.0 to the D- from the 3.0 and for the D+ the same? Or do I have to do something completely different? I like to hear from u

does your gaming pc have a empty dvd drive? i found a useful solution to fill them up. you can get 12 usb 3.0 on your computer! 7 on the front 5 on the back. all for under 35 dollars. here are the links to the two parts you need. [Link removed] the first link is a pcie to 5 usb 3.0 ports. you install in in your pc and you have 5 ports and a extra 15 PIN USB 3.0. this is where the second link comes in. a 7 port usb usb 3.0 shaped as a DVD drive to put infront of your computer. you connect the 15PIN usb 3.0 to the pcie and BOOM you have 12 extra ports of Usb 3.0! share this post to people who need this! Thanks for reading

Hello! My Logitech G930s 7.1 doesn't work and I got told that maybe using the headset with a USB 2.0 port would fix my problem, I have 2 USB 2.0 ports on my case, but I can't use them because both of my usb 2.0 headers are in use. So I thought that maybe if I would downgrade one of my USB 3.0 ports to USB 2.0 I could test if 7.1 would work again. Is downgraded USB 3.0 the same thing as a "original" USB 2.0 port? And can I just downgrade one of my USB 3.0 ports instead of all of them? Edit: Forgot to say that all of my USB 2.0 headers are in use Thank you!

This might be a pci lane related problem so I'll start with the details of my rig- I got this mATX motherboard and an i5-6400 (click for links). Inside I've attached a GTX 950 and a TP-Link Wifi Adapter onto the mobo. The front IO panel has 1 usb 2.0 which I don't use and a couple audio jacks. In the back I have 2 usb 2.0 for which I use the mouse+keyboard. Also there are 4 usb 3.0 jacks. I use them for these peripherals - An external Hard disk which utilizes usb 3.0, an Xbox gaming controller, a Phone charger and USB headphones. Inside I've used 3 of the four SATA cable slots for 2 HDD's and an SSD. The issue- Whenever I've tried charging my bluetooth speakers it would charge for 5 seconds and I would hear the not charging anymore sound. It used to be that if I unplugged everything else in the back it would charge but ever since I added a second monitor it has stopped. Now I charge my speakers with a wall socket USB adapter. I also noticed that I can't get iTunes to detect my phone. I can read the folder in 'This PC' but I can't sync it or anything since it doesn't even show up. File transferring on my SSD or the external seems to not use its full capabilities at always caps at around 80mbps. (mega bytes) Have I run out of Pci lanes in my PC? Could this be why the speakers dont charge or my phones not being detected in iTunes? I never have had a full understanding of how pci lanes are utilized.

Hot damn this is my 2nd build and I still have a broken front panel USB 3.0? Or is it the implementation of USB 3.0? 1. BitFenix Phenom M On this rig, one port would be unstable when both ports are populated.. I would not be able to directly copy stuff from one USB 3.0 drive to another as it will result to one drive intermittently disconnecting. If I was copying between my PC and HDD while a BT adapter is running on one port, same result. Intemittent disconnections (either the HDD would disconnect or the BT adapter). 2. Silverstone Sugo 13 SG13-WB Now on my SG13, one port is completely busted. And the other port will only read USB 3.0 devices if I booted it with them plugged in Not sure if it's the implementation of USB 3.0 front panels (either on the MoBo-side or the PCB on the case-side) Tomorrow I'm gonna try plugging them into a USB 2.0 header (using a USB3.0-to-USB2.0 adapter) and I'll see what happens. 3. Dell XPS15 L502x Laptop This is a 4 (or 5?) year old laptop and the USB3.0 ports are the same. They will cause intermittent disconnections at random when USB 3.0 devices are plugged in. Thoughts? Any settings I may need to know?

So I've googled the issue for the better part of a year now with zero luck. Doesn't appear to be related to one device or a single USB port but when something is plugged in, like my USB 3.0 external hard drive all hell breaks loose. None of the "solutions" I've found so far have worked for me and I'm ready to just get a new motherboard because this is a major PITA. Any experience? Windows 7 x64. If I posted a log would anyone be able to use that?

Alright so all my computer's usb 3.0 ports and audio jacks (on the front and back of the case) have stopped working, as in when I plug something into them nothing registers (it doesn't register in windows, asus bios, or linux running off a CD), the usb 2.0 ports on both the front and back of the case still work, however. I've tried everything google and the LTT forums suggested to see if it's a software problem and I can pretty safely assume that it's not that. So I'm thinking it's a faulty component that I'll have to replace, my guess is the motherboard. My question is: if you were in my situation what would you do, would you replace the motherboard? Or could it be a different component? Thanks in advance neighborinos

So I went in my PC the other day to tidy up some cable management and I went to unplug the USB 3.0 header and it wouldn't budge. So, I applied a bit more force and it came off, however with a few broken off pins and bent ones. My front USB ports will not work and I don't know how to fix this. Any advice or comments are appreciated thank you!

Hey LTT Community, currently i am looking for some portable storage for my daily use with my Dell XPS 15 L501x(with win 7 64 bit). I looked for usb 3.0 sticks which also would be able to use for os installation, but on amazon.de(i am from germany) there are lot comments about speed drops during usage(most of the time write speeds) and overheating issues(which kinda made me thinking). I also know about usb 3.0 Sata adapters for normal ssds or m.2 ssds(where my knowledge is not that big for example i read on win 7 m.2 ssds doesn't work properly over usb 3.0 adapters). So can you guys recommend me some products or tell me sth about the m.2 issue? For storage capacity questions i am looking for about 120gb

Hi all! New to the forum here but a subscriber on YouTube for about a year now. I have a pickle: I'm planning to buy an USB 3.0 thumb drive. I've gathered from reviews that it has a writing speed of 80 MB/s. I've also tested my HDD with the same software that I've seen in those print screens (CrystalDiskMark) and it told me that my reading speed of the hard drive is 70 MB/s. So I've been wondering if pairing these two would create a bottleneck for the USB. I mean, would the copying speed (writing on the USB) be limited to 70 MB/s?
