  1. Hi, After Google Photos is no longer "free" (they want to scrape your data and pay for the privilege), Dropbox in no longer good, and OneDrive is a piece of ****, I decided to try Nextcloud on my on server. Config Hypervisor running: - FreeNas with Z1 zfs - Ubuntu VM running plex, sonarr, homeassistant, Nextcloud (installed on its own SSD) Usually Nextcloud installs in the localhost file system, but it is a VM and I want to keep my data on my NAS. I changed my data folder location to a mount that links the VM with my NAS (same mount I run my Plex, Sonarr and other related programs). After moving the data folder I get this error "Nextcloud your data directory is readable by other users". I solved that by editing server/config.php and adding 'check_data_directory_permissions' => false, . How safe is my setup given I bypassed this option? And who are other users? Is it referring to local users, I am the only person using this server, and yes I can browse the files stored by Nextcloud using SMB. I set up Nextcloud with https and let's encrypt, that I can access through a DDNS. Is this setup safe ish? Also, how do I get rid of or block the http connection, if I go to the VM ip using http is get --- Apache2 Ubuntu Default Page. (just delete the www /html/)? Thank you!
  2. Hello All! I'm currently having trouble figuring out how to run a shell script that executes with root privilege after the arriving at the desktop in Lubuntu 20.04. Unfortunately, the built in Autostart functionality in the LXQT configuration manager doesn't execute with elevated privileges. Additionally I also tried putting the shell script in etc/profile.d directory; however, all this did was make Lubuntu take longer to get to the desktop. I have made the file .sh, executable, and owned by root. Essentially, I want the terminal window for the script to pop up after I arrive at the desktop to prompt me with options. The script waits 60 seconds for user input before automatically executing another script. The reason it has to have root privilege is because the second script getting automatically executed needs to have root privilege as well. That script contains a watchdog which needs root privilege to trigger a hard reboot in the event of a hardware failure while I'm away from the computer. Hope someone can guide me in the right direction because I'm currently out of my depth. Thanks!
  3. Has anyone here had any success getting OG Crysis running in Proton? I've tried many of the solutions on ProtonDB and have tried Proton-GE but the most I get is a black screen. Crysis 2 works fine. Haven't tried any of the other Crysis games tho. I'm running a distro based off Ubuntu 20.04, Nvidia Driver 460, kernel 5.11. Any ideas anyone? Thanks!

  7. New to Linux, please explain things as if I don't know anything. I installed Ubuntu 20.04 recently, and the first thing I did was launch the software updater. However, it started lingering while trying to "configure friendly recovery". I left it for about an hour, but eventually closed it because that didn't seem normal, and tried launching the updater again. This time, it lingered forever with "checking for updates..." displayed above the empty progress bar, and "waiting" displayed beneath the bar. I tried closing it again, and was met with the following message: Not all updates can be installed Run a partial upgrade, to install as many updates as possible. This can be caused by: *A previous upgrade which didn't complete *Problems with some of the installed software *Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu *Normal changes of a pre-release version of Ubuntu There were three options at the bottom: settings..., partial upgrade, and continue. Clicking on partial upgrade closed the window and nothing else happened, so I opened the software updater again and tried closing it again to bring back the previous message, which worked. This time, I clicked on continue. Then got the message: Software index is broken It is impossible to install or remove any software. Please use package manager "Synaptic" or run "sudo apt-get install -f" in a terminal to fix this issue at first. I don't know what Synaptic is, so I closed the window and ran the command in the terminal. It asked for my password, which I gave. I then got the following messages: E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process 3044 (aptd) N: Be aware that removing the lock file is not a solution and may break your system. E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), is another process using it? That's where I am now. I am running Ubuntu 20.04 64 bit. My hardware is as follows: Cpu: AMD Phenom (tm) II X4 B95 Processor Gpu: ATI Radeon HD 4200 Ram according to windows: 4 gigabytes installed, 3 gigabytes total Motherboard: HP Compaq 6005 Pro SFF PC BIOS version/date: Hewlett-Packard 786G6 v01.15, 02/08/2011 PSU wattage: 240 watts I think
  8. Hi All, I have a really strange issue. My laptop (Acer Aspire v5-591g) doesn't recognize any USB 2.0 devices when any operating system (Windows 10 or Ubuntu) booted up, however I can use USB 2.0 keyboards in the BIOS. The laptop has one USB 2.0 port which stopped working a long time ago. It has power, but looks like data doesn't go through (except in BIOS). A couple of months ago, my USB 3.0 ports stopped, and when I opened the case it turned out that the USB 3.0 port has a battery charging chip which is shorted and that's causing the problems. I removed that chip carefully, so the short issue is resolved, but that port doesn't have power anymore, which is OK as far as I know. But I still can't use my last USB 3.0 port. It recognizes any USB 3.0 device and works without any problem, but I cannot connect USB 2.0 devices, which is strange to me. I can't even see USB 2.0 Root-HUB in the Device manager: I tried to boot-up a Linux live disk because I thought it's a driver issue, but it didn't worked. I also tried to downgrade my BIOS, didn't work. I tried so many things (removing USB hubs, fixing registry entries, etc.) but nothing helped. The only thing why I don't think it's a hardware problem is that it works in BIOS without any issue. I used USB 2.0 keyboard to test it, and when I was in BIOS it worked without any problem but when I booted into Windows or Ubuntu, it stopped working. Do you have any idea? I'm a CS Engineer, I tried my best but couldn't find the root-cause of this issue. Thanks for your help, Rich
  9. I know it's sort of a dumb question but i wanted to know and also could not find any specific result for it on internet. So for upgrading my ram in ubuntu do i need to do anything specific in the software or is it just as easy as physically installing the memeory sticks?

  11. Hi so today I stumbled upon a problem. When adding the line "renderer NetworkManager" to my netplan .yaml I get a could not resolve error when trying to do a apt update. My .yaml looks like network: ethernets: enp9s0: addresses: - 192.168.2.10/24 gateway4: 192.168.2.1 nameservers: addresses: - 8.8.8.8 - 8.8.4.4 version: 2 renderer: NetworkManager I need to add this line because I use cockpit a lot to manage my server and it requires it for me to be able to manage my network interfaces through the web gui.
  12. Hi so yesterday I added a drive to my raid array. I have a 3 disk raid 5 raid array and so I added a fourth. But now im stuck on where do I go from now. I started by growing the raid which took around 16h and now I am wondering how do I grow the partition im using for data without deleting anything on it. Lsblk gives me that as a result for my raid array. sda 8:0 0 3.7T 0 disk └─md0 9:0 0 10.9T 0 raid5 └─md0p1 259:1 0 7.3T 0 part /mnt/media sdb 8:16 0 3.7T 0 disk └─md0 9:0 0 10.9T 0 raid5 └─md0p1 259:1 0 7.3T 0 part /mnt/media sdc 8:32 0 3.7T 0 disk └─sdc1 8:33 0 3.7T 0 part └─md0 9:0 0 10.9T 0 raid5 └─md0p1 259:1 0 7.3T 0 part /mnt/media sdd 8:48 0 3.7T 0 disk └─sdd1 8:49 0 3.7T 0 part └─md0 9:0 0 10.9T 0 raid5 └─md0p1 259:1 0 7.3T 0 part /mnt/media I tried to use resize2fs but it tells me that it dosnt need to do anything since its already using the max ammount of block.

  14. Here is a thing, I want to re-install an OS with a new SSD(M.2) on my NAS(ubuntu). But when I boot in to PE drive(Win PE) the partition initialization comes out, and I hit the inistialize button. I realize that there is still my old drive(SATA HDD) with Ext4 partition and it's not recognized by the disk manager in Win PE, so it's initialized. I close the initializing window immediately(within 2s), but I still lost my partition. I tried to use diskgenius to find the lost partition, but it turns out some kernel partition(about 20s kernel partition, I haven't click the apply button). I am confused, because there are just some videos and photos in the nas old drive. Is my sequence wrong? Should I do this with linux style software? And how to make it? I am so sorry for the phone-shot image, but the PE has no internet and I have no capture card :| Thanks a lot.
  15. I have a quad-boot setup (KDE Neon Unstable, Ubuntu MATE developer release (aka "Rolling Rhino"), Windows 10 & Arch) on my laptop. I just installed Arch an hour ago. I'm getting this error when trying to boot it using rEFInd: Invalid loader file! Error: Not found while loading vmlinuz-linux I installed Arch on my laptop's secondary drive and formatted using Btrfs, and the ESP is on the primary. rEFInd was installed few weeks back with KDE Neon, if that helps. In rEFInd, the Arch entry is looking for my ESP even after I already changed the `PARTUUID` to look for my Arch partition. I noticed that in `/boot/efi/EFI/refind/drivers_x64/`, it only had drivers for ext4, so I copied Btrfs driver from `/usr/share/refind/refind/drivers_x64`. Following [instructions](https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/REFInd) on Arch Wiki about setting up rEFInd, here's the menu entry for Arch on my laptop: menuentry "Arch Linux" { icon /EFI/refind/icons/os_arch.png volume "Arch" loader /boot/vmlinuz-linux initrd /boot/initramfs-linux.img options "root=PARTUUID=12c1d277-ab6f-764f-aa41-92a11fd1b4c5 rw rootfstype=btrfs add_efi_memmap initrd=boot\intel-ucode.img" submenuentry "Boot using fallback initramfs" { initrd /boot/initramfs-linux-fallback.img } submenuentry "Boot to terminal" { add_options "systemd.unit=multi-user.target" } } I tried using the `PARTUUID` from my EFI partition and my Arch partition, but no go. I also double checked if subvolumes exist on that partition, but none exist: $ sudo btrfs subvolume list /mnt ID 258 gen 20 top level 5 path var/lib/portables ID 259 gen 21 top level 5 path var/lib/machines Is there something I'm missing?
  16. I have 2 RAID partitions (one is NVME based and other is HDD based) on my ASUS ROG STRIX TRX40-XE GAMING - motherboard. Both are NTFS and being used in Windows 10 (One for OS and other for Data). I have installed a 3rd SSD and have installed Linux (Ubuntu based PopOS) on this SSD but i'm unable to see or access my 2 RAID partitions when im booted into Linux. I couldn't find any RAID driver support on AMD or ASUS's website for Linux. Can anyone help me ? i do not want to install Linux on the RAID partitions, just want to access the data in those RAID partitions while i'm booted into Linux.

  18. Hi, I am going to describe the issue in a broad way to better explain the situtation! I am having a problem with my dual boot system. I had an SSD. Previously I installed Windows 10 on that, then I decided to dual boot. So I made free space and started doing the installation. In the installation menu, I choosed windows drive to install ubuntu boot loader, but again and again, I was facing the issue which was basically grub was not showing up. Then I changed the boot loader installation path, on that time, I choose the full drive in order to install ubuntu boot loader. After that, I successfully installed ubuntu and used it. Then when I wanted to go back to Windows, I saw the option of Windows 10 in grub boot loader, but when I click that, a black screen appears. I believe on the first try, I unexpectedly deleted the Windows boot loader, so windows is not loading now. I really don't know what to do, so please help me!
  19. I have an old Sony VIAO PCV-RS710G I would like to get working. I installed an old hard drive I had and attempted to install Ubuntu on it. The problem is when I insert the DVD into the DVD drive and I get to the installation menu up after I select an option I just get a blinking white line forever. I tried taking the drive out putting it in a known good PC and installing Ubuntu from there and that was successful. I then put everything back in the Sony and tried to boot from the hard drive out of curiosity, and it booted into the GNU GRUB environment where I can select from a few boot options. If I try to boot into Memtest86+ it boots into that fine and runs fine, but if I boot into Ubuntu I get the same infinite blinking white line. Out of curiosity I tried to install windows 10 from a DVD and got the same damn blinking white line forever. 0 idea what's wrong, I have swapped out all the RAM< the GPU, and removed all the ad in cards.
  20. Alright, so i'm running into trouble with my Ubuntu F@H server. The main thing is that the stock F@H config.xml file doesn't contain the value <gpu v='true'/>. This value is needed for the client to actually see the GPU's in my system. Everytime i try to add the value tho, it disappears right when i start the F@H client. I try editing the xml with nano (sudo nano /etc/fahclient/config.xml) everytime i safe the new config nano says "(x)lines written", and when i open the config again the new lines are there. But everytime i open F@H the config resets. help please, pretty please?
  21. Hi guys, just joined the forum to get a second opinion on the build im about to start. Current Build: Im currently using a A1SRi-2758F board of Supermicro which uses the 8 core Atom-C2758 processor clocked at 2,4GHz, the system has 16GB DDR3 ECC Ram and a 256gb Nvme SSD via a pcie riser as the main boot/system ssd. The powersupply is a 250W Asrock Gold Mini ITX PSU. Its currently housed on a 2HE Server Chassi (Chenbro or Rackable I think) Use Case: Now, I am happily running 5 VMs with 4 vcpu's using kvm, the host os is ubuntu server. My goal is hosting the infrastructure at my company, on my homelab to do basic troubleshooting and pre-deployment testing on neew products, since at work I cannot make any errors or hundreds of Devs would be standing before my door. The Problem: The CPU i currently have is great, low tdp and nice clockspeed, but when deploying heavy infrastructures like Attlassian software, seperate PostgresDB, Icinga, Ingres on a Kubernetes Cluster, I do run into heavy performance issues. So my Question for the Users of this Forum: I saw that the passmark score of the Epyc 3251 is 7x more than the c2758 while having still a relative low tdp. Therefore if this setup is feasible for a new Homelab. Ah yes before I forget, I plan on buying 2 Boards, for various reasons. Thank you in advance, hopefully I can recieve some helpfull opinions on what I could improve.
  22. Hey, I have a shared folder on my Windows 10 desktop. I am trying to stream media to a laptop running Ubuntu 20.04.1. LTS. I'm able to see the folders I want to access by using the command "smbclient -L servername -U username", but I cant open any of the folders or access them at all. Has anyone had any experience in this? I'm pretty new to ubuntu and linux, any help would be very appreciated. Thank you!
  23. I was trying to fix my neighbour's old laptop. I determined the problem was the OS and needs reinstalling. I tried to put the HDD on my external drive enclosure but when I plugged it in to my desktop. It wont detect the files and just showed up as 4 partition, 3 of them being Local DIsk somehow. Also when plugged the usb controller gone haywire somehow. Then I tried using Ubuntu via bootable usb stick hopping maybe it can read it. And you know what it did. But I can't transfer the file to my computer drives 'cause it detects it as a read only drive Can someone helped with transferring these files.
  24. Hello everyone, I would love to switch to elementary OS/ubuntu full time but there are just a few issues holding me back right now. 1. My laptop does not go to sleep when I close the lid. The fan just keeps on spinning, and battery drains too, and when I open the lid again it seems that everything just crashes , the backlight turns on but the screen is black. 2. Amazon prime/netflix won't load Full HD videos, they're stuck in 480p 3. the audio quality from speakers is much, much worse than when in windows. also by default only 2 speakers work but I was able to solve that with the solution provided here. My laptop is a HP envy x360 with Ryzen 3500u and I've tried updating to the latest kernel(5.9) with UKUU. Is there any way to solve these issues?
  25. I'm currently trying to fix my neighbor's laptop. Something wrong with the OS and needs reinstalling. I tried to moved the files by plugging it in my external hdd enclosure. I plugged it in to my windows laptop and it's was unreadable. Then I tried using Ubuntu and it was able to read the drive. But when I tried to move the data from the faulty drive to the Ubuntu drive. The transfer speed was so slow. It's been running about a couple of hours now and it's only managed to move a couple of folders and about a gig of data. It's this normal to be this slow or am I doing something wrong??? Please need advice.
