I am trying to learn how to code and I want to install Ubuntu or Linux alongside windows 10, but I have a slight problem. The internet dongle I use doesn't support Linux, just windows. The reason I need to use a dongle is because my room is far from the router. If you have any solution, please post it below. Thank you for helping me

Hey all, for all of you techies who have started projects either with the raspberry pi or arduino how far can you take them ?? How about letting people control all of your Christmas lights via the internet ! If you want to know how this works, there is a dedicated server handling the front end, there is a couple others that work as load balancing. There is a ubuntu server at my house that takes the commands via users and then redirects them to the arduinos that control relay boards that then control the lights. The webcams are all raspbery pi B 256mb with camera moduals attached running raspbian headless that capture the images and then redirect them to the web-server for all you to see. http://mathlin.co.uk/christmas/web-cams/ Merry Christmas, Luc

What happened to my PCI-Passthrought configuration?
suicidalfranco posted a topic in Troubleshooting
So, i had managed to set up the PCI-Passthrought virtual machine, everything was all fine and dandy, could run every game i throw at it, i was happy and all, but ever since yesterday for some reason, when i try to run the VM, first the VM doesn't show sign of launching, then either virt.manager freezes or the entire system freezes/enters in kernel panic mode. I need help to fix it, really tried everything i could but can't seem to find what's wrong with it, logically it should work, but it doesn't. EDIT: Uhm... that's weird... the host shouldn't be able to pick up the display connected to the GPU, but now it does... why??? EDIT 2: Went looking at the logs and that's what it gives when i tried to launch it yesterday: also checked the modules file on initramfs-tools and the grub, and everything is fine over there, there is no reason why the host should access the GPU, but it's doing it... -

Hello LTT audio aficionados As the title saids i'm looking for some advice on a headset or microphone headset combo to replace my current one, which after six years of service is finally giving in to age. I've had this one set since got my first pc so I've never had to lookup what the feature set of a headset was. I mostly use it for voice communication such as teamspeak, mumble and skype but occasionally also some music and movies. Since some of those voice session last multiple hours I usually like to have some music playing in the background through my speaks. On the current headset this works perfectly, I head the background music fine and the other people can only barely hear it, even voice activation on teamspeak works flawless with the music on. I would like to keep doing this setup however all headsets that I can find seem to be closed back which wouldn't allow this kind of use if I'm correct. Because of this I've been considering getting a separate mic and headset. But the choices here are just so plentiful I don't even know what would work best. My first inclination is just to buy a snowball ICE and hope cardioid keeps out enough of the surrounding sounds. Now you're probably wondering, what is this current headset well it's a "Logitech Precision PC Gaming Headset" Yes, I know the where terrible but it worked fine for me for a little over six years now. The speaker set I'm using is a logitech Z323. All used in my own room which is quiet. The headset never get's taken outside with the laptop or the sorts. Oh, and it all needs to work on ubuntu. That unfortunately rules out logitech's new headset series as they need an, unavailable, driver for most of it's functions. Thanks in advance for any advice or tips you can give me regarding this.

I'm looking for a virtualisation OS that can run 2 linux instances on a weak Atom N280 box with 1GB RAM. One half will serve as a NAS + DLNA + Print Server, and the other half as a public webserver. It would be nice if it could also import an existing OS image I wouldn't mind some suggestions and guidance as the closest I've been to virtualisation is VMWare Player...

I previously had a setup on my laptop which used 30 GB's for my Ubuntu secondary boot, and 470 GB for my Windows 10 OS. I no longer need Linux for my Programming class so I planned on going back to 500 GB on W10. I went onto windows 10 and into my Disk Manager, Deleted the partition that had Ubuntu installed, and successfully returned the Linux partition to Unallocated space. However, I can't expand my OS (C:) partition to include the unallocated one. I've tried 3rd party partition software as well with no success. I did do some weird tinkering with GPT and some other formats (ext4, ext3, FAT32...) to initially get ubuntu to install properly. Would that format be affecting this? and if so, how do I go about getting it to work? Any Help is Greatly appreciated! Thanks

Well we all know AMD does worse than Nvidia but their promise with Crimson is clearly not as good as promised... http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amd-binary-2015&num=1 Here you see how much they improved this year which is not by much sadly... http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=amdgpu-2016-details&num=1 AMD promises improvements in 2016 but after all these failures can we trust a single word? http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=2015-holiday-gpus&num=2 How far behind Nvidia is AMD? Well 750Ti beats the Fury so lets just say their cards are useless... Also please pester AMD about this issue!

I have downloaded ubuntu unity 12.04 on my chromebook alongside chrome OS. Whenever I turn of and on my laptop and try to run ubuntu, all that comes up is the background image. No ui. The only way to start something up is to make a file, go into the file, and navigate through there.

Hello guys, So i recently started using ubuntu 14.04 for school (i.e. i cant change the version). We were issued Dell Optiplex 780 mini desktops and two screens, connected via a DVI splitter to the only DVI out on the machine. The problem is (and this is the same for every unit in the class), the second monitor is recognized by the system but doesn't display anything. I can see both monitors in the "displays" tab of the system options and i can move windows on the deskotp of the second monitor (which i can't see). Also, the second screen was displaying the background during the OS install. That's what the xrandr gives me : xrandrScreen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1024, maximum 8192 x 8192DVI-I-1 connected primary 1280x1024+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 376mm x 301mm 1280x1024 60.0*+ 75.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.1 60.0 800x600 75.0 60.3 640x480 75.0 60.0 720x400 70.1 DVI-I-2 connected 1280x1024+1280+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 376mm x 301mm 1280x1024 60.0*+ 75.0 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.1 60.0 800x600 75.0 60.3 640x480 75.0 60.0 720x400 70.1 I've tried everything that I could think of, but I am a complete linux newbie, so that didn't got me anywhere If anyone can help, you'll be praised amongst my kind for the next 3.14 generations.

While trying to use a VPN connection on my Ubuntu server, I found out that when launching my OpenVPN client with : sudo openvpn --config someplace.ovpn it makes all my remote services unavailable : my TS3 server, my plex server, my qbittorrent webui and some other minor stuff. Of course I can reach them from within my network with192.168.X.X:someport, but not from outside with my outside.ddns.net:someport. I realized after trying to resolve the issue, that my noip client was updating the ddns from myisp IP to the VPN IP, but even if I disable the noip client and ensure that the X.ddns.net stays on my ISP ip, my services are not reachable. What I would like to know is how to configure my server, vpn service, ddns, ... to have access to my plex server with X.ddns.net:plexport, my torrent webui with X.ddns.net:qbtport, etc ... while using the VPN service. Or if it's not possible, how to only use some traffic through the VPN (for example plex and TS3 server don't go through VPN, qbittorrent yes). I've read a lot of stuff with iptables and what not, but I've never found a clear and easy answer. I can understand that if all traffic directed at X.ddns.net arrives at my VPN IP, their server while not know what to do with some request to port 32400 (which is default for plex media server). What I don't understand is why it doesn't work when I have the X.ddns.net point to my ISP IP, meaning it gets to my router which knowns everything to route those requests (port forwarding rules working).

Guys I have my laptop that was running windows 10 and I have downloaded the latest version of ubuntu and made a bootable usb with them. Then I tried to install them. Because the installation wasn't recognizing I had windows 10 installed on the laptop I chose the "Something Else" option and followed a simple guide to install Ubuntu. Then restarted the pc as supposed to. The problem is that I don't get the Dual boot option menu before booting from an OS and my computer boots imediatetly to ubuntu!! How to go back to windows? Any ideas? Also my laptop has an 256gb ssd on it. What I noticed when I was creating the new partitions for Ubuntu was that i had 256gb of "Free Space" instead of lets say 200gb that I actually had free. Hope that helps. Thank you in advance!!

Hi, I have built a pc with one SSD and two HDD's. I want to install windows on the SSD and then ubuntu on one of the HDDs. I would like to know how I would go about doing this in such a way that I get the GRUB selection menu at startup. Also what would happen to the third drive? Would it be used by both or just one of the operating systems? Im not too familiar with partitioning so I'm not sure how to make it so that Ubuntu takes the entire HDD and leave the second HDD for windows. I know that I must first install windows on the SSD. After doing that what do I do next? Assume the SSD is sda and the two HDDs are sdb and sdc. Thanks in advance for your help!

Well hello there, Lately I've been busy trying to figure out the proper way of setting up my home network and since I decided on most of the things I still haven't on the HTPC build, I have an idea and all of the parts to get except I don't know if it can power what I'm going to throw at it. I have 2 builds in mind and I have to go with one of them so your tips and ideas would be great! # The first HTPC (Entry Level HTPC): CPU: AMD Athlon 5350 APU RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY DDR3 4GB Motherboard: ASUS Mini AM1I-A Primary OS Drive: Kingston 60 GB SSD Secondary Storage Drive: Seagate 2TB HDD OS: Ubuntu # The second HTPC (Performance HTPC): CPU: Intel Core i3-4130T Hasewell RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY DDR3 4GB Primary OS Drive: Samsung 120GB SSD Secondary Storage Drive: WD Caviar Green 3TB Power Supply: Seasonic 360W I will take care of the rest of the parts like the case, Coolers and optical drives. The HTPC will have Ubuntu installed as an OS then I will have apps like CouchPotato, Plex Media Server and Sonarr installed. Which system to choose? Performance? Or Entry Level? I prefer Entry level but I don't think it'll cut it since it is really low end. Looking forward to hear back Thanks in advance

source: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/05/ubuntu-15-10-name-announced the title of the post tells all the story: Canonical, during the Ubuntu Online Summit, has finally settled on the name for the name for it's next build set to release in October and the name is Wily Werewolf. The meaning behind the name as the article says stands for: At the same time Mark Shuttleworth, CEO of Canonical, talks about the success of Ubuntu in the cloud platform and the Internet of Things, on why he believes that MS didn't copy Ubuntu Convergence and about a soon to be released smartphone that will finally bring the Convergence feature demoed 3 years ago to our pockets (please be the Meizu MX4 or newer). All in all seems like it will be another good year for Ubuntu, something I'll be enjoying the fullest.

Guys, I had to install Ubuntu on my system due to project work. So had thought of dual booting Windows 7+ubuntu. But after several tries i was not able to create a partition for ubuntu and also the partition i created via Windows disk management tool. that Partition was also not visible and i was not able to install ubuntu. Luckily i Had spare 500gb HDD lying around and i installed ubuntu on that system and now when i boot my pc.. it directly goes into windows and not into ubuntu MBR i.e GRUB(i guess after reading several articles over internet). My main Question is now how can i make my PC's boot loader to recognize that there are 2 OS in the system and and to give me the option to select 1 on every bootup. Please help me over here....

Windows: Ubuntu: if this is against linstechtips rules to post your own videos lemme know il remove it!

I have a server running Ubuntu 15.04 on my home network that I want to ssh into from work. It is connected to a router (WDR-4300) that is running DD-WRT (build 26622) and has OpenVPN set up with my PIA account. I have tried several different port forwards but I can't seem to connect, it always says connection refused. I have done a bit of googling but come up empty for the most part. Does anyone know how I might go about setting it up properly? I can ssh into it fine on my local network. I'm using OpenSSH with keys if that makes any difference. Thanks

Hi there Ubuntu pro's! I've encountered a really frustrating problem. I've set up Ubuntu 12.04 on a new MSI laptop. Thing is, everything works fine, except the wireless connection. I can't seem to find any wireless network connections. Normally you get different networks that you can connect to when you click the wireless icon in the system tray. All I get is respectively: Wired Network (greyed out) disconnected (greyed out) Wireless Networks (greyed out) Disconnected (greyed out) Connect to Hidden Wireless Network... Create New Wireless Network... VPN Connections V Enable Networking V Enable Wireless Connection Information (greyed out) Edit Connections... So can't connect to anything and by what the terminal is showing me it seems that the network adapter is working fine? Can someone please help me out? So I'll give you guys a bit of information that I've managed to gather. lspci | grep -i network 01:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
