  1. First and foremost, my friend and I are unsure if we're going this year, pending work schedules and personal lives, so I cannot offer rides to anyone again this year like I did last year for a couple people until that's settled. If we do go, we'd be taking one of the 2 ferry routes from Vancouver Island, and would have room for 2 normal sized human blobs and 1 skinny one, or 2 blobulous sized human blobs, but again, I won't know until it's closer to the date. I just thought I'd create an unofficial ridesharing / carpooling thread for anyone who wishes to be nice and pickup those staying outside of walking distance or public transit with their extra vehicular seating. (Mods, go right ahead and delete this if you'd rather not have it on the forum - just thought it'd be a good idea for those traveling in from out of country.) Here's how this should work: You create a post in this thread depending on the following: if you're driving, how many seats you wish to fill in your vehicle OR if you need a ride, how many people need a pickup, and from where (no direct addresses please - this is a public form, after all) if you can take public transit, please do, as there's limited parking available. FYI, Google Maps actually works really well for public transit in Vancouver When you find someone who needs a pickup or someone who can pick you up, quote them once with your reply then they should PM you with more details to work things out - I am not volunteering to do the coordination for you If you fill your seats or find a ride, please remember to EDIT your post in this thread so everyone knows your seats are filled / you found a ride And as always, be safe! If you're uncomfortable giving /getting a ride to / from a stranger, there is never any obligation to follow through. Simply let them know you no longer need to give / take the ride, and get to LTX 2018 however you were going to get there originally.
  2. Probably not so much new news as more confirmation of the direction that SpaceX may be taking in their quest for sustainable rocketry, however SpaceX's COO, Gwynne Shotwell, has confirmed at TED 2018 that they are planning to be using the Big Falcon Rocket as an International Travel platform within the next decade and they feel that they could be competitive with a standard Business Class ticket for travel to the other side of the world. https://www.fastcompany.com/40557831/spacex-wants-to-replace-long-haul-flights-with-rocket-travel-in-the-next-10-years Now don't get me wrong, this is exciting and I'm hoping that they are successful at this endeavor, but I have some serious safety concerns myself given aviation history and how markets and safety tend to operate... My general impression is that a demand for volume can lead to cutting corners in order to deliver and the last thing that I would want cutting corners is a rocket that I'm using for travel around the world. Might have to up ticket prices a bit.
  3. Hi, I need suggestions for a new case. I'm going on exchange to Calgary for a while and I need to take my computer for uni work (and games). My current case is way too big, so I wanna get a small, compact case that allows for a: - Full-size GPU - 240mm rad (that'd be ideal but probably isn't gonna happen) - 2 HDDs, 1 SSD I'm not picky about the form factor. I'm obviously trying to re-use as many parts as possible but my motherboard has been mcfucked for a while so I'm happy to get a new, smaller one. No budget at this point. Just don't suggest something dripping in gold and I should be fine, cases aren't that expensive. Thanks in advance.
  4. Hello again mes amis, I am soon flying to Canada, I have been trying to sell my desktop computer but seems like in vain. Hence, I am considering packing my motherboard, processor, HDDs, GPU and RAM into my suitcase itself. Can anyone recommend the safest (damage proof and ESD proof) and lightest/least bulky method to pack the components? I am super concerned about mucking this up. all help is appreciated! thanks in advance!
  5. Hi ! I have been following LTT for a couple of years now but first time on the forums. I'm currently looking for solutions for a new macbook pro and I feel like I need help evaluating the situation. I run a small web development company with a friend for 7 years now and more recently we are doing 360 photos/videos/apps. We both just graduated and have the opportunity to travel Europe for 6 months from March to September and we will likely be filming in various formats. Here's our actual gear/situation: Late 2012 rMBP 13" (one each): they still work perfectly except for the recent video editing part Canon 70D mainly for photography GoPro 6 + Karma Drone and Gimbal (H265/HEVC not supported by our current laptops !) Insta360 Pro for 8k 360 videos Panono for 16K 360 photos Adobe CC subscription ~About 5k CAD budget to upgrade laptop(s) We bought and tried a low specs (still decent) 2017 MBP 15" and we experienced a massive performance upgrade as expected, but we were far from smooth 8k 360 video playback on a 3000 USD laptop so we returned it for now. Here's what we would be willing to deal with: Switch from Premiere to FCP for better performance Carry an external GPU (if that's any good for Premiere or FCP) Have only 1 video editing system and the other one for programming/photoshop (our current MBPs are still perfect for this) Struggle with our current laptops for a couple of weeks and buy a Coffee Lake MBP in Europe for better performance. Not have the best render times, we will mostly do this at night and it's laptops, not servers ! Here's what we would not be willing to do: Switch to Windows, sorry that's a no go. Buy a maxed out 15" MBP now since we feel like Coffee Lake MBPs are coming soon and would surely be a better investment. The problem is we are leaving in 8 weeks, they will probably not be out. Use our potato laptops for 6 months since we can't scrub timelines with any of our gear What I would prefer is to have 2 i7s 13" MBP and an eGPU that we could use on any laptop when need it so we get a lighter setup when we will be filming and not editing, while having the better battery life of the no-GPU 13" MBP when we are only programming/doing general stuff. I'm just not certain a dual core will not bottleneck the whole system ! Any ideas ?
  6. Howdy ya'll! I just finished up a mobile workstation/gaming build in a Node 202 case. I'm very happy with the hardware I crammed in there and thermals I got from this case however, it is slightly larger then I expected (good for building bad for travel). I was hoping to fit this into a backpack for an upcoming series of trips but non of my backpacks fit this little monster. I know that a lot of "military styled" backpacks would work but I really can't rock that look. I found this one that I think would work (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MD26FGZ/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3E5K6GEFSI075) but I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this or has any ideas? Thanks!

  8. My school district has decided to lend select tech students laptops to use throughout the next school year, I was one of the chosen students. The problem is the district is not giving out any information about what laptop they will be lending the students, so I don't know if the battery capacity will be enough for my 3 hour programming course and notes for the remaining 4 hours. So I've decided to play it safe and pick up a battery bank with an AC outlet, problem is they're all $100+... I'm already spending a decent amount on a backpack to protect the laptop since students have to pay for any damages (even though it's probably gonna be a $200 POS that would be cheaper to replace than to repair). If there are any ~10k mAh AC output battery banks <$60 I would love to hear it.
  9. Hey guy, I will be travelling back to the Caribbean from the US as my trip is done. In my trip I was able to buy some parts for my rig that I will start in the Caribbean. I bough a motherboard, cpu, ram and graphics card. I just want to know what are the laws on travelling with them and of I will have any problems, I spent about 300$ on them and losing them wouldn't be in my budget, also I want to know how I should go about packing them.
  10. Umm idk how you'd exactly find him or anything, not necessarily a time machine. What would you show him to prove how much technology has advanced?
  11. I just got back from my new favorite city Barcelona, Spain and I was wondering what everyone's favorite country and city is outside of where they live!
  12. Hey All, I am wanting a pair of headphones (over ear) for travel. this will mainly include trains, buses and walking. I would like them to be slightly water resistant if possible ( do closed back have a better chance of being water resistant? ) I currently own a set of HD558 at home set up to my fiio ek10 but would prefer to not travel with them and get another pair instead that is better suited to travel. something with a similar sound signature would be great, also similar price, preferably cheaper. Thanks guys <3
  13. Greetings, I've been travelling with my smartphone, a Xiaomi Redmi 2 (NOT water resistant!) , and it's served me well until today, when I accidentally dropped it into a bathtub. I fished it out in seconds, and the phone still worked. However, the screen began to flicker just as I got the power off. Just a minute later, I took it apart and, upon removing the battery, saw that there was a fair amount of water in the battery compartment. I have a phone to use, but it's a broken iPhone 5 with about 3 minutes of battery life that I have to keep constantly plugged into my battery pack. I won't be home for another month, and don't have access to any other electronic devices, so it goes without saying that I need to get this working as soon as possible. I was wondering if any of you had effective, quick methods to dry out the phone and restore it to working condition. However, keep in mind that I can't simply let it sit to evaporate, as I have to catch a flight in about seven hours. I'm also staying at a hotel, which means I may have access to raw rice when the kitchens open in the morning, but I'm not 100% certain I can get to it. If I can get to the rice, my initial plan was to put the phone and battery into a zip-lock bag full of raw rice and let it sit for two days. I only have access to one packet of silica gel, which is currently sitting in the battery compartment of my phone. I'm rather desperate to get this work again. I'm travelling in a foreign country on my own and communication will be key, so any help might literally be life-saving. Regards, Aereldor.
  14. Has anybody seen the Hybrix on kickstarter? I think this could be a great thing for linus to do a kickfarted or a good kickstarter video on and im actually interested in this. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hybrxpc/ultra-slim-laptop-with-android-51-os-and-remix-os/description I mostly want to start a discussion and I searched the forum for it but nothing came back.
  15. Hello, I work for a company and travel a lot. Most of the times I am several months abroad. The compay provided me with a Laptop wich is great for work but with no dedicated graphic cards its not enough for me. My company would pay an extra bag for my flight, and if the other bag is my "gameing setup" so be it. A big bulky laptop like Alienware or on msi has the advantage of being portable and the screen is build in. But if want to "protect" them i must carry them in my hand laggage. If for example I use a second metal suitcase with some sort of foam plastic I could transport even a "normal" tower, but i dont know if all cards, drives would be to happy being transported as luggage via plane. TL. DR.: is the a ruggedized version for gaming or a travel tower? budget: 2000-4000 Feel free to suggest a solution Thank you for your time
  16. Hi, This might sound like a stupid question, but I plan to move to the States from Europe. I am selling my PC before moving as it's too big, but I have a set of Cablemod cables that I don't really feel like I'll get my money back when selling the PC... I was planning to put them in my case, but then wondered how they might show up on the x-ray scanners... Is it something that might be a little "touchy", seeing a bunch of tightly packed cables in a suitcase? There wouldn't be any PSU or computer components (besides maybe a hard drive or SSD). Just thought I'd ask. What do you guys think?
  17. Hi all, Im going to be traveling to New Zealand this Christmas and am planning on taking my MSI MS-1773 17" Laptop. As well as this i ride a motorbike and often carry a backpack with me. I want to take the bag as hand luggage and be good for day to day use as well as protecting what will probably be around £3k ($4.3k) in the bag so no $40 cheep and chearfulls. however it cant be one time use I need it to be able to withstand some punishment when on a motorbike and be of a great build quality. Have had a good look at the Everki backpacks as reviewed by Linus and like the Everki Concept however wandered if anyone had other suggestions for me. Thanks Slock
  18. Hey everyone. I'll be moving in about half a year so I wanted to get the routine down beforehand. I have a massive build that is heavy as all crap, put in a Raidmax Vampire bulky case (which I'm planning on upgrading to a MasterCase Pro 5). I'll be flying across the country on 2 connecting flights. I know to remove my GPU and rad ahead of time and put them in separate boxes (preferably in carryon), but what should I be doing with my case/mobo? I don't have anything remotely big enough to hold my monstrosity, should I just pack it in a box or remove the mobo first? Would I put it in the unusual baggage for extra safety, or should I just kiss my computer's safety goodbye as soon as I get on the plane?

Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-3592753/Don-t-panic-250-Babelfish-like-gadget-fits-inside-ear-translate-foreign-languages-real-time.html I seriously think this thing will be damned awesome for everything in general with travelling, communication, and improving on and learning new languages. I don't know about how hygienic one might get though if you were to constantly change ears of one with waiters/waitresses, passerby's for directions etc. What do you guys think? I reckon it'll be pretty sweet. Personally I prefer to wait for more refined versions of things though.
  20. Hey All, Just thought I'd do a build log of my first watercooled build. Here's how I categorize insane: 1.) Neverwatercooled before, Goes straight for the hardest, hardline tubing. 2.) Rather than do it in a normal case, does it in the world's smallest case 3.) Not even sure if the components will fit. I feel like I've come on top of it a stronger, wiser person. The main inspiration for this build is ultimate performance (As much as I could afford), In the world's smallest case. Because my work is never in the one place and I travel heaps, I needed the desktop processing power as I do a lot of development for Virtual Reality and also shoot a lot of 4K footage. Throw in some computational Architecture and simulations and the laptops just die from hearing my footsteps. I thought because it's such a small case the most effective cooling would have to be watercooling, and also because it just looks so freaking cool. Anyway, I'll let the pictures do the talking. PC Parts: More PC Parts: Water Cooling Parts: Hoo boy, taking off the stock cooler of the GPU Such a nerve wracking process: All the bits here for scale Putting the Waterblock on the CPU was pretty fun, and I love how the EK one looks, it looks great But I hated how the backplate was chrome so I painted it black: Figuring out where my watercooling components goes was the hardest thing for me Because I didn't want to use the brackets they got for side mounting it because I can't see inside anymore so I had to mount it on the bottom, this was hard because it would but up against the front IO cables, which was a massive pain in the ass, and then I thought why not put the fans on the bottom?!? Next was figuring out where the Reservoir goes, this was a hard one because I wanted to put it side ways but someone else already did that. Can't be like everyone else can I..... So I decided to put it above the graphics card here, how I'm not so sure yet... Finally, my backplate for the GPU arrived I have to say I was so surprised at how shiny the thing was, but damn does it look good. Also protects the GPU board and acts as a heatsink so that must be good right... SHINNNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYYY Quite like this turn that the pipe is doing, Devil is in the details. Alright watercooling piping time, time to put on my plumbers hat...... So yeah I have no idea what I'm doing, I went through 3 or 4 tubes before I got my bends right, such a noob.... OH well I'll know for next time.... I build car engines too, not just computers. So Basically, theres a few holes on the top of the power supply bracket, so I was like, well they're not being used by anything So I made an aluminium angle to go there. It fits in quite nicely actually. Oh man what a mission it has been, towards the end of my build I actually took the whole thing to a parts shop, and bought parts as I was putting it in and returning them when they didn't fit. The hardest part was getting the pipe to go from the radiator back into the RES, which ended up being made out of ALL FITTINGS. SO EXPENSIVE!!! I'm surprised my lighting controller actually fits in there, There is literally 0mm of tolerance at any given point in the build.... I also painted the Silverstone fans white because they come in such an ugly Blue which would not have looked good Oh well, it's done now. Now to LEAK TEST And she's all good!!! Let the party begin!!!
  21. Hey guys, I am going to Dreamhack Austin in a few months and I need a bag to carry my small Silverstone SG13B case onto my flight. I wanted to get the Silverstone Sugo pack, but unfortunately it is no longer manufactured. Does anyone have suggestions of similar bags? The carry on size limit is technically 10 x 16 x 24 inches, but I can probably get away with up to 12 x 16 x 24. Thanks!
  22. Hello everyone! I travel alot and recently I started making travel videos, as seen in my other post here. I study for cameraman. Now to get to the question, I am thinking about buying a portable jib for my travels, one I could take with me on the plane. Does any of you know a proper, not to expensive, jib to buy? Thanks in advance, Ruben Boerstoel

I could go I7 6700, $25 small profile cooler, and GA-H170N ($121) to save around $160 and heat. I am not positive how much OC I could get in a hot box. -I will be travelling on planes with this thing! It fits carry on. -I play games but not intense ones. Mostly hearthstone, some CS:GO. I think its best to just wait to buy a GPU, I am on a budget and don't need one.
  24. Making a portable desktop, I was inspired by Linus' SG13 titan video. I don't have such dramatic needs, but packing a powerful system into a small case is appealing to me. I will be travelling internationally and it seems this case can even be brought carry on. I will take some precautions, but otherwise seems it should not be a problem! For my use case, I play poker for a living and this requires having lots of programs open at once (16 GB ram), it does some "prime 95" like calculations (I7) and heavily uses a program that reads/writes to a PSQL database (SSD/m.2). I will use the computer many hours a day, and I do plan on gaming with it, but my needs are very low. I like to play CS:GO on medium / low settings and thats about it. (2560x1440 at 144hz / 144 FPS would be nice). Given all of these considerations, and a rough budget of $1200, I am left with this build given my options here in Thailand. Please let me know if theres any inferior parts I could upgrade, but availability here is lacking, and parts are expensive! $90 for bottom of the bin ddr4 2x8 GB 2133mhz ram for example. Fan / fan filter to work with stock CPU cooler and filter dust, which there is a lot of here and no stock fan included. My cooling options for air is limited to Argon Ar06. I was considering upgrading to I7 6700k + NZXT X31 cooler and gigabyte z170 board, the 6700k is very reasonably priced here, as is the cooler, but I don't anticipate much overclockability in this hotbox, and the cooler may present an issue with travel (although I could remove it before hand). 25. Hi, I'm looking for a laptop that will suit my needs. I've been looking around (here and there) for a while, but I don't keep up on hardware as much as I'm sure many people here do. I'm hoping for some help. What I want: -Something lightweight and thin, but durable. I travel for work and other reasons, so this is very important to me. -I'm a student, so I need to be able to do schoolwork on it. Most schoolwork doesn't require much, but I need the ability to run VMs on Virtualbox (probably no more than one at a time), and use GNS3. -Battery life is important to me (again, travel). -Screen size between 13-15". I don't want a 17" monster, but something bigger than a tablet would be good. What I don't want: -An optical drive, or anything else that adds unnecessary bulk that people these days don't use. Seriously, I don't remember the last time I used a CD/DVD for anything. -A gaming laptop. This machine isn't intended to be for gaming. It's for work, school, studying, research, and video chats/conferences. What would be preferable: -SSD -numberpad on the keyboard. -something that runs fairly cool. What doesn't matter: -The operating system, bloatware, or ridiculous certificates that comes with it. I'm probably going to use OpenSUSE as my primary OS, but I'm leaving my options open for things like Debian or CentOS (In other words, whatever comes with it will be wiped). Price range: -I dunno. I certainly don't want to spend $2000. In fact, I don't really want to spend over $1000, but I guess it just depends. I'd like to find something in the area of about $700-800 (USD - I'm American) or so, if that's possible. I'd like to not spend more than I need to spend. I'm still a student paying for tuition out of pocket. That's not cheap. Any ideas?
