I'm looking at the LG 27UD88 to use in a workstation configuration. I have a 2016 Razer Blade. I was wondering if anyone has tried this pairing before? I'm curious if the 60w charging over the USB C port is sufficient enough to at least power the system, for reference the charger it shipped with is 150w. My goal is to have a single cable solution workstation. Any other suggestions or monitor recommendations would be very much appreciated.

Buy Caldigit TS3 Lite on Amazon: http://geni.us/Y1mTHY The TS3 Lite from Caldigit is a massive Thunderbolt 3 dock that claims to help remove the need for an abundance of dongles... but does it really server that purpose?

Hi, I am caching up on technology and Thunderbolt 3 cought my interest. I have read Wikipedia, Intel and Thunderbolt Technology side but I feel information is missing on the pure technological specification. I write this topic after watching LG 5K Display for Mac - A PC User's Perspective from LTT. The explanation of displayport lanes into the thunderbolt is not satisfying for me. I think thunderbolt 3 can use more details. Referring to the above video, how does Thunderbolt manage to channel "two displayport" and USB 3 data to the monitor ? My guess would be an encapsulation of the different protocol across the link. My first investigation with Thunderbolt 3 is with USB : I wonder how the Thunderbolt 3 was providing USB connectivity. I thought that the Thunderbolt controller could use one USB port from my chipset however it is not the case. The Thunderbolt 3 controller exposes a new PCIe USB XHCI Controller when a USB cable is connected. See screenshot. I would be curious to know what the system reports when other devices are connected like the dongles LTT reviewed. Regards, Stan

Hi people of the Linus Land! I was wondering if anyone has any idea how to use NVMe SSDs as a portable, external solution around here? I have searched all corners of the internet and from the looks of things so far there are only M.2 external enclosures available from manufacturers and no viable solutions for the NVMe SSDs so far. I have two NVMe SSDs that I would very much like to be able to use externally on the go and with a proper connection, Thunderbolt 3.0 preferably, that allows for the near full saturation off the intended drive bandwidth. Any help is much appreciated.

Can anyone find a proper thunderbolt 3 dock available for purchase in Canada? It seems like there is 6 or 7 companies that say they have them but they are all "coming soon". Are there any actually available? I want to move my desktop into the room next to me (because noise) and running the cable for the dock through the wall is the best solution I can think of. What would you recommend as a solution for this? I'm also considering the following options: ~ Buying 10ft cables for all my peripherals (aux cable, displayport, 4 usb cables) and sleeving them all and running that though the wall. ~ Using an adapter to convert the thunderbolt 3 port on my desktop to thunderbolt 2 and using a thunderbolt 2 hub ~ Same thing as above, but instead of the adapter, buying a thunderbolt 2 expansion card. Also: I don't care much about cost, I've already spent 1000$ on trying to make the build quieter by using "silent" parts. I just don't want the solution to drastically degrade stuff like audio quality or mouse response time.

Hey Everyone I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I have a question none the less. I recently bought a Macbook Pro (Late 2011), so it has Thunderbolt 1.0. One of my USB ports is dead, and I need a bit more expansion - however, I can't find any Thunderbolt 1.0 docks available. If I was to purchase a Thunderbolt 2.0 dock, would it still work on a 1.0 controller - only at the 1.0 speeds of course. Like I said, kind of stupid, but thought to ask just in case. Thanks for reading.

DESIRED SETUP Asus X99-PRO/USB 3.1 MOBO i7 6850k (40 lane) 2 graphics cards in SLI 1 Samsung 960 Pro m.2 1 ThunderboltEX 3 add-in card REFERENCES ThunderboltEX 3 specs page: link Asus X99-PRO/USB 3.1 specs page: link Asus X99-PRO/USB 3.1 manual: link 1* The PCIe x16_4 shares bandwidth with M.2 x4. When M.2 socket is occupied, the PCIe x16_4 slot will be disabled. COMMENTS AND QUESTION So at first I was thinking of using an Asus Deluxe II motherboard, but the asinine pcie lane allotment got me to looking at other options. Enter the X99-Pro/USB 3.1. So the PRO specs say that PCIe x16_1 & PCIe x16_3 can be used for SLI without interfering with the m.2 slot, which is awesome. PCIe x16_4 apparently gets disabled with the m.2 inserted, leaving only PCIe x16_2 open. Question 1: could anybody here kindly tell me if I will be able to still fit a ThunderboltEX 3 card in PCIe x16_2? Is the graphics card in the slot directly underneath going to interfere or block anything, especially if I want to add water cooling? Question 2: also, even if the ThunderboltEX card will fit, does anybody know what that would do to the pcie lane allotment? The ThunderboltEX 3 card uses pcie 3.0 x4 (I think from the PCH but not sure), so what exactly, if anything, is it going to be stealing lanes away from? Is it going to end up throttling something? Apologies if any of my questions sound dumb. This is my first pc build and I really want to make sure to not screw it up

Hello I sell my mac mini to build a gaming desktop, but I search a motherboard with capability to boot from macbook disk via thunderbolt like I use to do with the mac mini (connect thunderbolt, boot macbook bro in disk target mode and reboot mac mini onto the macbook pro ssd drive) I can have my laptop data and os but the load is on the desktop cpu and ram instead of the laptop. Did you think a motherboard with built in thunderbolt will be capable of "Target disk mode" boot ? Thank you.

I'm looking for a motherboard with an X99 chipset. My first idea was an Asus X99-Deluxe II ATX LGA2011-3 board, but I need the motherboard to have two thunderbolt ports for use of 2 monitors on a TB dock. The ideal is something relatively similar to the Asus board, but with this second thunderbolt port. Research so far hasn't yielded anything helpful and I'm only getting boards with one port but I have seen such boards be mentioned but not named so while I believe they exist, they may be unreleased products. Thanks for any suggestions.

I'm looking at the LG 21:9 UltraWide 34UM95 thunderbolt monitor. My plan is to have two of these daisy-chained to a PC, but I have 2 questions about them: Will a second thunderbolt port be required to support the devices? Will the USB ports function properly on the second monitor? Thanks for any help.

Hello guys! This might not be new, but can be promising. I'm talking about the Akitio Node. It might not be as sexy as the Core, but hopefully can deliver the same, or at least close performance. It has some obvious downsides, like not having an ethernen port or USB ports, but it is almost half the price. What do you guys think about this? Is it worth to give it a shot?

I have a Microsoft Surface Pro 4. The website says it has one Mini DisplayPort 1.2 Port, and One Type 1 Usb 3.0 Port. I need more USB ports. I have a usb 2.0 HUB, but when I plug in more than two devices, they all lose responsiveness. The hub is not very good, is cheap, and is quite old. I am looking for a new one. The devices I will be attaching it too are: 1 Midi Controler (Seperate power adapter), And two sound cards (Wireless headphones, and 4 channel Behringer Device). I could also benefit from a few more ports for external storage, and mouse + Keyboard. I also knew that Thunderbolt 2.0 has more bandwith compared to USB 3.0. So, I got thinking. Is the MDP 1.2 port the same as thunderbolt? Could I use a thunderbolt adapter instead of USB for the extra bandwith? Is it worth doing? Should I just use a USB hub?

So this is mostly about the wan show, but I have seen several other people also just hate on apple without actually understanding why the macbook pro has (what I would call) the best I/O on a device ever made. 1) First of all, some people said they can't plug their UBS devices into it without an adapter. This is not true. The ports are still USB ports, just with the new C connector. All USB devices can be plugged in without any active adapters. Devices with a removable cable can just have a cable replaced with a USB-C to whatever, instead of the regular USB-A to whatever. Stuff like USB drives with a fixed connector will need an adapter, but in the future all USB devices will use the C connector anyway. 2) They are more than just USB ports. This is a combination of power delivery + USB 3.1 + displayport + hdmi +thunderbolt. THIS is what I call progress. ONE type of connector which can do everything. Why have 10 different types of ports and 10 different types of cables when you can combine them all into one? Having the same cable and connector for all devices will make everything easier in the future. This may seem like a stretch right now, since few devices have USB-C and you have to use USB-C to DP, or USB-C to HDMI, but the only way to switch everything to USB-C is by starting off with a product like this one. It's not hard to imagine 3 years from now where everything is connected using USB-C cables and you don't need to worry about where you left your extra HDMI or whatever. Remember serial cables and printer cables and gameport cables? Well those got replaced by USB-A. Now USB-C will also be replacing power and display cables. 3) USB-C is the BEST connection to support today and in the future. I'm sure everyone can see the billions of devices with USB-A on it, well USB-C is better, and the best way to make it widespread is by forcibly switching to it. Only a handful of PC cases, phones, motherboards, etc. have USB-C. By putting it on what is one of the highest selling laptops in the world, millions more people will begin switching too USB-C. Yes it is forced. In case you haven't noticed, this is the only way to get people to switch quickly, especially with majority of old people who resist change like it's life or death. 4) It might have been sarcasm, but why was @LinusTech complaining about 4 ports being too many?? Hypocritical much? Complain about the macbook not having enough, then 4 is too many? I think 4 is more than enough, considering the daisy chaining capabilities of Thunderbolt 3, which will make it so most of the time you only need 1-2 connectors for everything. 5) @Slick mentioned laptop docks. If you watch the conference, they show that you can easily connect everything that most people need through a single connector. External displays, external storage, power, peripherals, etc.... Nobody needs a laptop dock if you can literally plug in one cable and have everything connected 6) Power can be supplied from any connector or either side. Yes, the magsafe connector is gone, but hey look, more hypocritical people. First complain about apple using proprietary stuff, and when they switch to a global standard like USB, then complain that the proprietary connector is no longer there. Seriously, USB-C is the future whether you like it or not, and it is already becoming popular on phones. Having the same connectivity on a laptop again benefits the "only one type of cable" reason. 7) Progress, again requires the use of a lot of force. More people buying macbook pros = more people using USB-C = more manufacturers adding USB-C to their devices. USB drives, monitors, external storage, peripherals, etc... This benefits EVERYBODY, since we will all be using USB-C in a few years. Again, USB-C is the global standard, not a proprietary macbook connector. It will be on your PC case and you might even have a motherboard with some USB-C already. 8) Please watch the conference or read some articles about the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports before ranting about the macbook pro. USB-C is soon to replace almost every type of port on the back of your PC, and this is a great jump-start to get the industry into production. TL;DR 1) the ports on the macbook are still USB, all you need is a new USB-C cable, no active adapters or stuff 2) they can also do hdmi, thunderbolt, displayport, and power 3) the USB-C connector is the future, and soon everything will use it 4) 4 ports is enough because most of the time you can connect everything through 1-2 with the use of daisy chaining 5) connecting an entire setup by plugging in 1 connector is what people have wanted for decades 6) yes magsafe is gone, but replaced by a non-proprietary global standard, USB-C. You will be able to use the same cable on all your devices, not just apple. 7) forcing people to use USB-C is the fastest way to push the industry into more USB-C on devices/accessories, which benefits everyone, not just apple users 8) hopefully you learnt something today about why USB-C is a great way of pulling the future towards us at an accelerated rate. 9) gnight, I'll reply to everyone tomorrow

Hi guys, I'm considering the X99-E WS board for my audio rig. Main reason is I would like the PCI slots for expandability with Pro Tools HDX, Thunderbolt and a nice GPU for some downtime gaming. When looking at the ThunderboltEX cards that Asus offers, it seems as though the card needs to be installed in Slot 2 on the WS boards (the standard WS and the USB 3.1 version). Can you think of any reason for this? Provided that it's plugged into the thunderbolt header on the motherboard, would it not work in any slot (like it appears to on all the other thunderbolt capable Asus boards)? If it is the case that I can't plug it into any other slot but slot 2, am I correct in thinking that most GPUs will need to be installed in slot 3 or lower, as installing the GPU in slot 1 would block slot 2? Hope this makes sense! Thanks!

Hey guys, I saw Linus' build where he put his PC in the data closet and transferred I/O through a thunderbolt cable. I am wondering if anyone know if this carries the gsync signal? Specifics I am connecting 1.) GTX 770 Display Port to 2.) ASUS Thunderbolt EX 3 to 3.) ElGato Thunderbolt 2 Hub to 4.) ASUS ROG SWIFT PG278Q Right now I just connect the 770 right to the monitor with displayport and everything works find, but I am wondering if introducing the hub and asus adapter will cause issues? Thanks!

I have recently purchased an Alienware 15 R3. It only has two USB 3 ports, and I would like to get some more. Because I have two Thunderbolt 3 ports, I was wondering if anyone could recommend some USB 3.0 to Thunderbolt 3 hubs. I couldn't find any, but maybe you guys could.

I need some good 10 gig adapters

So after the fall creators update I go to plug my Alienware 13R3 (7700hq, gtx1060, oled touch display, 32g ram, 512g nvme ssd, and 500g sata storage ssd... you know the works.) into my usual usb type c adapter (Aukey with vga and usb) and open it up to wake it and every time I do so the graphics driver basically fails giving me usually some weird purple bar at the top with some distorted colors I have two of these adapter and both worked perfectly before the fall creators update and both give the same result now. the work around is that even if I have it plugged in before I wake the computer all I have to do to fix it is unplug it and wait for the picture to come back then plug it back in or wake the computer first and then plug it in. I have already tired DDU and then reinstalling the latest nvidia driver and made sure the intel graphics driver was up to date. I would really prefer not to have to do a clean install. If you have any idea on what could be going on I am all ears. And a side note since I'm not the only one I've heard of having graphics issues with laptops after the fall creators update don't you think Microsoft should have tested for this kind of stuff before releasing a big update like this? Thanks for the help in advance.

Simple question, but I'm not totally sure as to the answer. If I were to buy a Thunderbolt 3 PCIe card, can I use that on a AMD Threadripper platform? As Thunderbolt is Intel tech, and I've not seen an AMD motherboard with it built in. Would it be possible to add Thunderbolt 3 to an AMD platform after the fact?

Hi everyone! I was planning to buy the x99a gaming pro carbon motherboard from msi for my new rig but it doesn't seem to support thunderbolt 3 option through i/o or tb_header so I decided to get the rampage v edition 10 instead but it's expensive So can you please confirm if the x99a gaming pro carbon motherboard support Thunderbolt 3 or not and if not what's the best X99 motherboard that you recommend with thunderbolt 3 support and RGB glowing areas and header onboard? Thanks
