  1. I've followed Linus' personal rig for awhile now and have always been interested in running a thunderbolt connection to a different room, but never personally saw any use in it for me. However, now that I've got a 3080ti in my rig and I'm in my own office (instead of just in the middle of my living room) the heat in my room becomes so unbearable I have to keep the door open almost all the time. The noise isn't too nice either. So while driving home from a 14hr road trip I just wondered if I should take the plunge and do the same thing. Just throw my rig into a server chassis like the Silverstone RM42-502, grab a server rack of some sort, have the server rack in the living room and just run a thunderbolt connection to it. Problem is there's multiple things stopping me from taking the plunge: 1. My maximus x hero doesn't support thunderbolt, therefor I'd need to upgrade my cpu, ram, and motherboard (I've been waiting for awhile to do it, and I still don't think now is the time to do so. Plus I don't need the added cost of essentially an entire computer upgrade). 2. I run a triple monitor setup and finding a dock that supports my 2 1080p monitors and my 1440p monitor are a little tricky for me to find. -Plus I'm upgrading to the new G8 soon, so I want to make sure thunderbolt 4 can even handle 4k 240hz with my additional 1080p monitors. -I think I remember Linus saying it's just using display stream compression anyways, so it wouldn't matter. Not sure though. 3. I'm debating the possibility of just running optical DP, HDMI, and an optical USB 3.1 extender for a hub on my desk. -I'm not even sure if I need to run optical at all. It's less than 30ft, so I don't know if it's totally necessary anyways. I was just concerned about bandwidth/signal loss. Any guidance would be awesome. Thanks!
  2. Hello, this is my first post and I would like to bring some questions I would like some answers for. I just recently bought a WD Blue SN570 SSD of 250GB(the SSD don't look like the official pictures, it look like the pic in this URL). So my questions are: Does the SSD can use the full speed of any USB(A, C, Thunderbolt) port(with adapter/s) with an external enclosure like this one from Amazon? SABRENT Dual Enclosure - Thunderbolt 3 Can I use the Thunderbolt 3 cable in the enclosure and turn it in a USB-C(non-thunderbolt) cable so I can cap the maximum speed offered with that USB-C port? Can I cap this USB-C 3.2 gen 2x2 PCIe Card in speed with the enclosure of the first question? This question are for me to convert my unused SSD in some kind of multi-purpose tool for diagnosis/backup/OS installation at the same time I coul use the full speed of the device fastest port. How I'm planning of using it as multi-purpose tool? Using Ventoy so I can store diagnosis tool and isos so I can simply launch the application with out installed OS or any interfering local disk slowing my tools. ¡I'm open to suggestions!
  3. Practically every peripheral interface, be it USB, SATA, PCIe, Thunderbolt, and even DisplayPort, uses a serial interface. That is, it transmits one bit at a time across the data channel. That seems kind of inefficient, considering that we used to have parallel interfaces that could transmit many bits at the same time. In fact, the only truly parallel interface that remains is DDR memory and inter-processor communication. So what happened? To understand this, it's best to look at several aspects of getting computers to talk to each other. How do devices talk to each other anyway? Through electrical signals of course! But these signals must be understood by all parties before those signals can make any sense. You might think this is as simple as sending a high or low voltage, but there are many characteristics of a signal to come into play here. These include: Voltage level: this is necessary for the devices to figure out what's a 1 and what's a 0. Some protocols don't have a 0V and some voltage. The official RS-232 spec for instance uses a positive and negative voltage. Baud (bd): this is the fastest the signal can swing between high and low states. This is somewhat interchangeable with bits per second, but technically, for example, 0000 is 0 baud while 1010 is 4 baud, even though both are 4 bps. With compression, the data rate can exceed the baud. Control: These are special things that happen within the signal that the receiver can use. For example, in the RS-232 spec, the transmitter sends a "start" bit that's a high value and ends with a stop bit that's a low value. Others can embed a clock signal by changing the signal between bits. These three attributes define a protocol, or the "language" that the devices speak. Once this is agreed upon, the following happens: The receiver remains idle, keeping just enough things up to wait for some kind of "start" flag. In many protocols, an inactive line is 0V to avoid drawing power over the line while nothing is going on. The transmitter has a buffer where the next byte being sent out lives. This is kind of like the display buffer in graphics rendering. The transmitter sends out the data from the buffer to the receiver. The receiver notices there's activity, then fires up the circuitry to capture data The receiver polls the data line at the character rate. So if the data rate is 1 Mbd, then it will check the data line 1 million times a second. Data is captured into a buffer, then sent off to whoever is supposed to take care of it. In parallel data transmission, for every bit in the buffer, there's a data line going out from it to a receiver's buffer. So if the system was a 8-bit parallel data line, it would have a byte sized buffer and each bit is connected to the other's bit line. At appropriate points in the transmission, the receiver will copy what's in the buffer to somewhere else. In serial data transmission, each bit in the buffer is rotated out like a queue. The receiver queues up incoming bytes and at appropriate points, copies the data out to somewhere else. What are the issues with parallel communication then? The biggest one with parallel communication is that it requires one data line for every bit of data being sent at once. 8-bit parallel buses need 8 data lines, 16-bit needs 16 data lines, 32-bit data needs 32 lines, etc. To maintain signal integrity so that the receiver knows how to reference the voltage, typically each data line has its own ground line. You can usually get away with less, but for high-speed or lower voltage buses, you really want one ground per data line. So take what I said previously and double the lines. This is presents a problem not only with the cables, but the connector size as well. SCSI grew up to an 80-pin connector, and well, take a look at it: By Shieldforyoureyes Dave Fischer - Own work, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=4671737 The second is that signals can arrive at different times. Electrical communication may seem instant to us, but in when the time domains are nearing nanoseconds, it starts to matter. The reason for this delay is either due to components holding up the signal to the length of the wire itself. The receiver can't know a data bit is late, so it'll take whatever is in the buffer at the prescribed time. How does serial communication solve the issues of parallel communication? The first is obvious, serial communication requires at most two wires total: signal and ground (ground is needed to reference the voltage). The second is that since you don't have the requirement of multiple lines needing to have their signals arrive at once, you avoid the issue of late signals altogether. As you can embed a clock signal in the data itself, the receiver need not even know the transmission rate beforehand. However, when signals are low voltage (typically 5V or less), noise becomes a concern. In cases like this, the data is sent out as a differential pair. That is, there are two data lines, both carrying the opposite signal. If the transmitter sends out a data bit 1, it will send out +/- the voltage of the signal. For example, with USB, a data bit 1 will produce a +5V and -5V signal. The receiver then compares the two signals. If they aren't complementary, the receiver knows that bit is noise and not actual data. While this still carries the problem of signals not arriving at once, 2 lines is much easier to ensure than 8, 16, or 32. Differential signaling is also helpful in that it generates what is called a DC-balanced signal, that is if you took both signals over time and averaged it, the signal would look like a straight line. In this case, 0V. The bit about differential signaling is important, because not only does it help prevent outside noise from ruining the signal, but at higher baud rates, the data lines themselves generate noise. This is why the Parallel ATA interface went from 40 pins to 80 pins. The extra 40 pins were ground to help shield the signals from themselves. But aren't some buses like PCI Express, Thunderbolt, DVI, etc. parallel then since they have more than one data line (aside from transmit/receive)? While it's true that, for example, PCI Express x16 has 16 data lines (32 total for transmit and receive), it's not a parallel interface. The way the above interfaces work is they aggregate transmitters. It's like how RAID 0 in drives work. The transmitter can either stripe data chunks and the receiver can sort them out later or each transmitter can handle a single request. This is how PCI Express can have multiple lanes. You cannot, for instance, take a 32-bit parallel interface, chop off half the wires, and expect it work since it was designed to have all 32-bits be sent out and arrive at once.
  4. I've been searching the internet for quite a while, and I haven't found much info on whether a thunderbolt expansion card, like the Gigabyte GC-Titan Ridge can act as a downstream device, and convert TB data into PCIE. I drew a quick diagram in paint. Is this in theory possible with standard cards? I've seen specialized cards that do specifically that, but they do not list any of the ICs used for the controllers, so I can't cross-check if the brand-name cards support being used externally. Can a thunderbolt PCIE card act as a downstream device, and send PCIE data to the connected device?
  5. Hello everyone I tried to do my own research but I am unsure whether the conclusions I made are correct. The general situation is that I want to run a cable from my PC to my TV area. If I'd run the cable directly straight through the room it would be about 5-7m distance, but as the cable is supposed to run inside the walls it has to be longer. I want to be able to play / watch stuff on my TV in 4K in the future. I don't have the TV yet so that makes options a bit easier. Preferably I could also hook up the sound system to it in the future. My options as far as I see them and the difficulties / questions: 1. Steam Link with a CAT-6e cable: I bought one of the original Steam Links and have never really used it. I am not sure whether it is smartest option as it indirectly limits me to that product and Steam. Would I also lose access to HDR? 2. HDMI: For the 4K60Hz I'd need at least HDMI 2.0 better would be 2.1, but even active optical 2.1 cables barely reach 10m. So an active optical 2.0 HDMI cable would be an option. 3. DisplayPort: I would need a cable with the DP8K DisplayPort Cable certification to have HBR3 (High Bit Rate 3) or UHBR 10 (Ultra High Bit Rate 10). But the range of DP cables is even shorter and only a few TVs offer DP ports. I feel this is the worst option. 4. Thunderbolt: This is where I got confused the most. It has the same port as USB-C, so I can I use the USB-C ports of my motherboard (Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming ATX AM4 Motherboard) or do I plug it into my GPU? Then I just use a Thunderbolt to DP or HDMI adapter next to the TV? But I think apart from being a bit unintuitive upon first sight I think this is my best option. What did I miss here and what is my best choice? Thank you for your help in advance.
  6. Hi, as the title says I need a recommendation for a Thunderbolt dock. I'm currently using a M1 Pro Macbook and I would really like to have something more "plug&play" to use my workstation at home. I didn't really find something that fits all my needs at once, that's why I'm asking here Needed things: - 1x 10G RJ45 / SFP+ Port - 1x Thunderbolt 3/4 port with Power delivery (to connect the macbook) - 2x USB Type C ports (usable for external monitors) - 1x USB Type A port Nice to have things: - 1x HDMI Port - 1x DisplayPort Port - Another USB Type A port - Another USB Type C port - Decent design - "Airplane departure" mode not included (I would like to have something silent, you know) Currently the best candidate is the "OWC Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock", also if I don't like it too much, is the only one I've seen that has the 10G networking port, but seems to currently be out of stock (Europe).
  7. Hi everyone, I have the following issue: If my computer was powered down and I start it, the USB hub integrated in my monitor as well a a Thunderbolt audio interface will not work. I can get them working by unplugging them and repluging them and then restarting windows (only restart will work, not shut down and turning it back on again). But after every shut down and start the same thing will happen. I had this problem since i got the pc a few months ago and have updated all drivers and bios, which didn’t resolve my issue. This problem wasn’t occuring everytime until i selected to turn off the USB ports in S5 state in BIOS, now I could get it to happen consistently. So it seems like the enumeration/ initialization of USB and Thunderbolt is not working correctly after boot. I have checked if windows fastboot and some fastboot in bios was enabled but in bios it was off, in windows the option field was missing and to be extra sure i run a command that should disable fastboot in windows if it was on. I am running a 12900KF on a Asus rog Maximums Z690 extreme with Windows 11.
  8. What do you think of using domething like this with an external thunderbolt nvme ssd adapter to run an cheap low powered graphics card? Ive got an old desktop or two that i can steal a powersuply from As far as im aware id just be able to blug these two adapters together and then id be good to go as there any reason this wouldent work for a low powered card (I understand that I am limited to only 4 PCIe lanes) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003057641163.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.2c244530Ryo0iB&algo_pvid=93914a4a-c683-4b1b-8c4a-824f74b481b1&algo_exp_id=93914a4a-c683-4b1b-8c4a-824f74b481b1-2&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id"%3A"12000023648940134"}&pdp_pi=-1%3B9.59%3B-1%3B-1%40salePrice%3BAUD%3Bsearch-mainSearch https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000975933842.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.1e3a759337libA&algo_pvid=54a86eaa-459a-4cc3-9cda-36e59e196f0d&algo_exp_id=54a86eaa-459a-4cc3-9cda-36e59e196f0d-0&pdp_ext_f={"sku_id"%3A"12000027491986252"}&pdp_pi=-1%3B96.68%3B-1%3B-1%40salePrice%3BAUD%3Bsearch-mainSearch
  9. Hi there guys, I have an issue where my Blackmagic Ultrastudio Recorder 3G is not working properly with my Asus Pro Art B550 mobo. I've made sure that the device works and that the cable works, test this on another device. I've made sure to download and install all of the latest drivers, BIOS updates and chipset stuff from the Asus website. I've uninstalled previous chipset drivers and installed the ones from the website. I've also tried different ports for the thuderbolt. Also I've tried to use DDU in case it was maybe something related to the display? (Idk, it's what people normally do) As you can see here, the device is being recognised by the TB application, however it is not working properly in Blackmagic's desktop video setup, also the light is not turning on on the device. One last thing, I know that the TB ports take bandwidth from the last PCIe slot (furthers away from the CPU), and I have left that slot empty, I am only using the GPU in the 1st PCIe slot, the one closest to the CPU. Specs: Asus Pro Art B550 Ryzen 5 3600 8x4 T-Create 3200 Mhz RAM Crucial 1TB Nvme SSD. Radeon Pro WX 8200 Thanks for any help, Eli

Budget (including currency): 10,000 usd Country: Usa Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: all sorts of games from call of duty to league of legends Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Things i have: Moniters, keyboard, mouse, storage -case, Phanteks Enthoo Pro TG PH-ES614PTG_BK -Sapphire 7900xtx 2. Aim upgrade my current computer and get it out of my room before summer. I plan on buying the Ryzen 7950x3d in February 3. Monitors How many monitors do you plan to use? Do you plan to add more monitors in the future? What resolution are they at too? I plan on using 4 monitors, i have my 2 main monitors at 2560x1080, and a acer predator 1920x1080, then 2 lg monitors at 1920x1080 4. Peripherals Do you also need to purchase peripherals such as keyboards and mice as well as monitors etc. Also please tell us if you'll need an OS such as Windows. no new peripherals unless you have a keyboard that is as good as the Logitech g15 but uses usb-c and not micro. 5. Why are you upgrading? We ask this because you may see upgrading as the only path to solve an issue but things such as driver updates, reconfiguration or cleaning can boost performance without spending a cent. I want the computer out of my room and want to run everything over a fiber optic cable
  11. Okay so here are the specs: Tomahawk b450 (not Max) Ryzen 7 2700x Gtx 1070 hybrid (from EVGA with the aio) Anker 777 thunderbolt 4 dock (for laptops - connect peripherals, ethernet, monitors, and power) A likely junk USB 4 extension cable 550W 80+ gold PSU Troubleshooting steps tried: Reset CMOS Switched PSU Switched power cables Switched display cables Wha happened: ADHD-no-impulse-control plugged the dock into the usb-c port of the mobo using a thunderbolt 4 cable and the aforementioned extension cable wondering if the peripherals and Ethernet would passthrough. It did! I thought great, nice easy way to use all my nonsense for my laptop for on my gaming rig without an additional USB switch and network switch. Then I unplugged and cable managed for a thousand year. Replugged everything and now doesn't POST. Tried clearing cmos. Nothing. Getting a VGA error led on the mobo. I've got a cheapo gpu coming in the mail so I can test whether it's the GPU or the mobo (maybe CPU ). My question is: does anyone with the technical know-how know...how what I did could break everything? Did the power passthrough from the dock make it's way and fry the GPU? Could it have fried the mobo I/O which then kicks up a VGA led error? Power works, all fans spin, tried the troubleshooting steps above. So yeah, help!
  12. Hey, so as the title explains I'm looking for a laptop but struggling with some odd requirements, I'm planning on moving away from desktop to a laptop, however my plan is to have an external gpu for when I want the extra power, so I'm trying to find a laptop that's got a decent cpu (my current pc has a ryzen 3 3300x in it so not terribly hard to beat haha), 16gb of memory (upgradable would be nice, but the way modern laptops are, eh oh well as long as it has at least 16gb) and its gotta have thunderbolt 3 for the external gpu. So that's where I'm struggling because I do find ones that fit these but they're super expensive because they include pretty decent gpu's so I'm just wondering if there's cheaper ones that fit these requirements as I already own a decent desktop gpu. I'm perfectly fine buying second hand if it can save money as ideally I don't wanna be shelling out thousands. Thnaks in advance!
  13. Dear hivemind, I need your help in planning my next build. I am not actually looking for parts or such but more conceptual advice on how to set up my work-/gaming space. Tell me if there is a different space for such a thing. I am currently working with a gaming laptop (with Thunderbolt dock) and I am very unhappy with the performance the laptop has and constant overheating problems. So I want to switch back to using a Desktop (for Gaming) and Laptop (for work, uni, travel). But I want to be able to use both devices with my peripherals (monitor, keyboard, mouse etc) at the same desk. So I have a few ideas on how to fascilitate this and concerns with them. I was hoping that someone has been in a similar situation and can lend some advice. First idea: Thunderbolt 4 dock for all So both devices would share the same TB4 dock and I would just plug the dock into either the laptop or the desktop (possibly through extesion cable) Pros easy to use, simple to implement Cons Motherboards with TB4 are like twice as expensive (something like the ASUS ProArt X670E-Creator WIFI at 600€ for AM5, for AM4 it would be 450€) TB4 extensions cards are not much cheaper and appearently the drivers can be quite shitty I have heard that TB on Mainboards isn't often that great and using a dock isn't as smooth as with laptops (can someone confirm or deny that? Second idea: Monitors directly connected to PC and dock Similar to the first idea, but I connect the monitors to the dock and the desktop, so the PC would not need to use the dock to display on the monitors Question Can I still use a TB4 dock if the mainboard doesn't have TB? Will it just not connect or is it just a worse perfomance? Are there any good USB4 (not TB4) docks? When searching I could only find TB docks. Pros Dektop doesn't need the use the dock for the monitors, good if the TB on mainboards isn't really that great Cons Still needs TB4 on the mainboard? Third idea: Desktop somewhere else A different idea I had was to just have the Desktop somethere else and stream games over SteamLink or something like that to my laptop Questions How stable/viable are such game straming things? Are there game stream programs for any game, as I understood SteamLink only works with Steam games? Pros Don't have to worry about dock and TB4 for the Desktop Cons Streaming my games might be unstable and will increase input lag Can you tell me if you have any experience in such a setup, what you went for, how you handled it? Any other ideas on how to set up my space are welcome. Budget (including currency): 2000 - 2500€ Country: Austria Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Laptop for Programming/Working/University, PC for Gaming (more CPU heavy games like EU4, MSFS, DCS and some (graphics heavy) VR gaming) Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):
  14. Hi there, i have a dell Inspiron 3580 with a dedicated amd radeon 520 (2Gb) gpu. I was thinking if there is any way to uninstall this GPU and use the pcie for a thunderbolt port in order to get thunderbolt connectivity. Thanks in advance
  15. Hi All Before moving into our new and renovated home, I had planned to build a desk PC but this plan won't work as well as I would want it to. Beijing being Beijing, space is so expensive so getting anything extra is a big bonus. External radiator: The original idea was to have a passively cooled PC using quite a few radiators, whereas now I'm thinking of getting a larger radiator(s) for a car etc and putting this on the outside of the house and wall mounting the PC. The new place is a bit strangely laid out, we occupy the ground and -1 floors, below us are storage rooms and there's a void on either side of the house (including next to my office) where a skylight lets light into the windows of rooms like my office and the storage room below. That void stays pretty cool in summer (Beijing is in the 30s °C, this must be in the teens), and quite cold in winter (often in the - figures, can get below -10°C probably a similar temperature despite being underground). I'm thinking that there will probably be 2 major considerations, pressure and the risk of freezing. Pressure I can overcome with pumps and staying with serial flow, but interested if anyone has experience with getting the pressure to run through a large radiator like a car. With the freezing risk, I can go with antifreeze as coolant but it looks like people have stated it needs to be diluted quite substantially. Does anyone have knowledge on this? This PC also won't be on all of the time, so I am concerned about it ptoentially freezing if the concentration is not good enough. Rack mounting The alternative would be to rack mount it. I have a 42U rack about 3 meters away from my office. The office has 2 ethernet jacks using CAT7 currently wired into a USW Pro 48+UDM Pro. I wouldn't mind replacing the wire in 1 of these with another that could enable a more distant setup. It also wouldn't be out of the question to run a wire up through the ceiling and to the rack. The length of this cable would probably need to be at least 11/12m. By the time I get around to this, or just coincide with an upgrade, my current CPU/MOBO will likely be replaced. Considering these 2 may be replaced, what would your thoughts on this be? My requirements currently (and likely stay this way for a while) are: 4k HDR 144hz display with 1ms refresh rate. 2 additional portrait 1080p monitors. USB: keypad, keyboard, mouse, webcam, DAC and another couple of ports for adhoc use. Would TB4 be the way to go or is there something else that's advisable? Especially given that there's already CAT 7 to play with. I'll rewatch some of Linus' house videos to refresh my memory on what he's doing but I think he was using a long corning TB cable that isn't easy to get your hands on. I don't mind going slightly experimental but it would be good to have a proof of concept/example before proceeding. I've used TB3 with a Caldigit dock as part of a previous setup and was happy with that. Any thoughts or references would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks
  16. For sit-stand desk reasons, my current desk setup has involved VESA mounting my work laptop. This is great for my neck and lets me use my desk space way more efficiently, but leads to awful cable clutter as the lack of native HDMI or USB-A on a Macbook Air means it's hard to cleanly route cables around awkwardly short and wide dongles. There aren't seemingly any in-spec extension cables either. Has anyone found a good way of handling this?
  17. Hello! I asked month ago for help related to getting the 25m Corning Thunderbold Cable to work with win11 and 12th gen Intel relating to addon cards. I want to detail my experience and way to making my setup work for future reference for anybody searching for this Topic because I had a Hard time getting anything to work. I first got a relatively cheap gigabyte board with TB support which I tested all the available thunderbolt addon cards(Titan ridge and maple ridge) with over weeks. Nothing worked I spent days tweaking the settings but it did not go anywhere. Next I wanted to give it a try with a Motherboard with direct support for TB so I bought the ASUS ProArt Z690-Creator WIFI and after that at the start not working again I gave myself another weekend to sink in and started searching for anything related to thunderbolt on google and that is where I found a post regarding a BIOS setting about IO Lanes which sometimes is set to 0 for no apparent reason. It turns out other the enabling the Thunderbolt discrete support I also had to go into the thunderbolt device settings and set the IO-Lanes reserved to 16. This is super wild and while I think I understand the settings I found exactly one reddit post mentioning it and that is what in the end helped. The Docking station NEEDS to be connected at boot otherwise I get weird things happening. Regarding to the docking station I tested the Lenovo ThinkPad Universal Thunderbolt 4 Dock, the Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock and I am using the i-tec Thunderbolt 3 Dock right now. In theory every TB3 and TB4 Dock should work but I did not have the funds to test any more sadly. I can not really reccomend this for anybody without the specific need to use Thunderbolt especially since Linus showed some fiber optic extenders that work way more reliable and are not so bad documented. My setup is having 3 optical 25m display cables and the Thunderbolt Cable running from my closet, going thru a room at the top and in the end coming out of the wall to my room where I have 3 monitors (1440p, 165hz) I use with the optical Display cables and I use the Thunderbolt DP for my VR Headset.
  18. Hi All, I'm trying to digitise my Dad's old Video8/Hi8 video tapes and am running into a few problems installing the Legacy IEEE 1394 drivers onto my Dell XPS 15 9550, running Windows 10 Home 22H2. I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV238E Digital8 camcorder with a Firewire DV port (Sony iLink), connected to my laptop, first via an Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter, then to an Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Firewire 800 adapter, then finally with a RhinoCables Firewire 800 to Firewire DV (iLink) cable. I have downloaded the Legacy driver and unpacked it, then installed the x64 driver from the .inf file. Unfortunately, whilst a dialog box appears claiming that "The process has been completed successfully", I cannot find any reference to the IEEE 1394 driver in Device Manager, nor will Adobe Premiere recognise the DV device when I open the Capture utility. Could anyone offer any advice, what might I be doing wrong? Many thanks!
  19. Hey Guys, I really need to upgrade my CPU, currently I have an Intel i7 6709. The Problem is I have a Storage Solution that works via Thunderbolt 2 (with an Adapter to Thunderbolt 3). Since currently it seems that the AMD CPUs have a way better Value for their Money I was thinking about switching to Team Red, but I've heard that Thunderbolt is more of an Intel thing. So what Motherboard + CPU could you guys recommend? The Hardware thats going to stay: -MSI RTX 2070 -Corsair Hydro Series H150i -4x Kingston 8GB 2400mhz DDR4 Ram -3 SSDs (normal SATA ones) + the Mainboard needs to support Thunderbolt 2 or 3 any recommendations? Thanks in advance!
  20. Hi there, I've been saving money to buy a new powerful laptop I can bring to work without worrying about battery life or weight destroying my back during my daily commute. I'm thinking about buying a MSI GS66 Stealth when they come out later this month (or maybe next month due to recent events). But here comes my main concern, one of my criteria is having a Thunderbolt 3 port to be able to plug just one cable when I come home and have a G-SYNC display, Ethernet and eventually a dongle for a keyboard or something else over USB. The thing is, after reading multiple threads on multiple forums I still have one big question : How to know if the Thunderbolt port is connected to the iGPU (Intel integrated graphics) or dGPU (Nvidia GPU of some sort) before making a purchase? It seems like laptop manufacturers don't give clear info on which output is connected to which GPU and I find this quite stupid because it's an important criteria for gamers or even content creators ! The only info I could found about the GS66 is the spec page on MSIs Website : https://www.msi.com/Laptop/GS66-Stealth-10SX/Specification As you can see, on the MSI GS66 one port is compatible with Thunderbolt 3, DisplayPort (what version MSI plz???) and even PD charging which could mean that if the DisplayPort output is connected to the Nvidia GPU I could even not bother with the AC cable If anyone has and idea on how I can find these infos before I make my purchase to avoid returning it coz it's not compatible with my G-SYNC display (or freesync display, i'm still not sure on what display to buy the only thing i know is i want a 1444*3440 display with some sort of adaptive sync and high refresh rate (at least 120hz)). have a nice day, stay safe and remember sleeping at night NB: I'm open for other laptops and displays suggestions !
  21. Is it able to run a titan ridge expansion card with the THB_C header unplugged on an AMD board?
  22. Hi, can i am asking for advice. Because i am having LG Ultrafine 4K almost 1 year, but i found today 1 dead pixel and I am refunding that unit back to Apple. I really liked this monitor but, it has some disadvantages like glossy surface and no HDMI inputs. What i like is just plug macbook pro in and i am ready to go without power bricks and etc. But maybe there is some better option than this monitor, i need something similar with Thunderbolt 3 which can also charge my macbook. I also want resolution 4K or 5K and maximum size for me is 27 inches. I am using it only for programming iOS apps, nothing more. I looked on options and i found alternative like BenQ PD2720U but not sure of it's quality, also i am thinking about LG Ultrafine 5K, but it has same disadvantages like their 4K and even 1 thunderbolt less :(. Do you have some experience with monitors for macbooks over Thunderbolt 3 or can you give me some advice. Thank you.
  23. So i currently use a Dell xps15 9575 2-in-1 laptop as my main computer, for both work and gaming. specifically larger autoCAD 2D and 3D files, 3D Studio Max for image rendering and the Adobe photo editing suite. I definitely need more cpu power than this device can provide but the draw to this device for me was the touch screen for artwork and asset creation and the thunderbolt 3 ports for an eGPU and a 10gb NAS. After seeing a few reviews of AMD's new Ryzen cpu's and what they are capable of in laptops, it made me start to think about what the next laptop i upgrade to will be. But I haven't seen any AMD laptops with thunderbolt 3 ports which will be a requirement for me since i take the laptop between my home office and work office. Do you think once manufacturers start to put these AMD cpu's in high end devices we will start to see them with thunderbolt 3 ports or do you think this is this a patent that intel is holding onto for their laptop devices? i always thought this was why apple never used AMD cpu's, even in the new MacPro, because they have set themselves up in a thunderbolt 3 peripheral environment. I also considered that it could be an r&d issues as most of the devices we see released this year were already being developed a few years ago when intel was top dog. Anyway, i made this thread to see if anyone else was interested in this or if it was just me. If you do, share your thoughts.

  25. Hi LTT community, I am looking at creating a single machine to serve as a both a server (for media (plex), and package manager server) and a normal desktop workstation (mainly used for software development). So here are some more details... Motivation / Background: I currently have a desktop (4790K, GTX970, 16GB DDR3) which is great but I would really love more cores for building. I am a software engineer, and I often build gcc/clang and other big projects where multi-core scaling is utilized extremely well. So I have been wanting to upgrade to an at least 8c/12t cpu, above 16c/32t would be overkill for my work though. So I could just upgrade my desktop and be done with it .. but I have recently also started a plex server on my desktop, which is great but it means I have to boot up my desktop top in the other room whenever I want to watch plex on the TV. I would leave my desktop on, but I am at work (when there isn't a pandemic) for most hours of the day and don't want it sitting there being power hungry for 90% of the day (including night time of course). So I am really looking for a solution where I can upgrade my desktop to have more cores, and have some abstract machine (virtual or physical) which is running 24/7 as a server. So I could upgrade my desktop AND buy a separate NAS (QNAP or DIY, not important) .. or I could think of a much cooler / complex over the top solution which would be an awesome project / setup and see if the LTT community shuns or redeems my idea. The Plan: Have one beastly machine, 16c/32t at least 32GB RAM, with virtual environments for a server and workstation. With a single thunderbolt interface from the server to my desk where the peripherals will connect. Ideally I'd like to have this off in another room but I don't have the space. (Yes this is a little inspired from Linus' gaming server / remote peripherals setup). So I was thinking of getting an AMD 3950X (16 cores, I can dedicate at least 12 to my workstation), at least 32GB of RAM (maybe 64), keep my current graphics card (I'm not a big gamer, don't need the upgrade), and I would need help knowing what motherboard I would need to best support thunderbolt-ness. Also what type of power supply I should look into? Should I get a server-style case which supports redundant power supplies, or should I just get a UPS. I hope my plan makes sense, I would really like if anyone could give me any past experiences on if this is a stupid idea and I should just get a simple low powered NAS; is this setup even via-able? would it draw a lot of power in idle? what are some possible downfalls I might run into? (e.g. I have heard plex doesn't like hardware acceleration with containers / virtual environments). Also how server oriented should I go with this, server rack-styled case / ECC memory (I don't think it's necessary...). Notes: when I say "virtual environment" I mean anything from unraid to docker to whatever, I haven't done this before so if anyone has a good guide on what to read/use for this setup that would be great. I use linux (20.04) for both server and workstation at the moment. I have never used thunderbolt before (with a desktop), would appreciate any information on what's required here. I don't have any need for Plex remote, it's only local use and it's only every one streamer at once. (I could see a future where there is 2, but unlikely). So the plex server doesn't need too much horsepower. Thank you to anyone who actually read all this, and great thanks to anyone who end's up replying!
