Hello. I have a mac mini M1 2020 with 2 thunderbolt 3 ports (alongside other connections). I wanted to expand the lmited capacity of the onboard SSD with a fast external m.2 NVME SSD, so I purchased a Sabrent Rocket 1TB SSD and a thunderbolt 3 enclosure. That said, I'm seeing some weird performance metrics when testing the SSD speed. When tested with the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test I get a slower "read" performance at first which ends up reaching the performance I was expecting after 5 or 6 cycles of the test When testing with Amorphous Disk Mark I get this: The drive is formatted in APFS, which should be the fastest format option on macOS. I have always seem to be getting weird performance with external SSDs, with all sorts of different drives purchased throughout the last 3 years on different computers on different operative systems, so either I'm the unluckiest man alive and managed to buy 5 consecutive malfunctioning SSDS from different brands in 3 years, or something fishy is going on here. Anyway I need your help in trying to determine whether this is normal behaviour or if either the SSD or the enclosure are malfunctioning. Other ideas (such as formatting the drive in other formats or using other apps) are welcome! I just need to know if one of these 2 articles is broken, as I'm still within the recall windows with my amazon order. Thank you.

Hey everyone, So my gf and I are nearing the end of our Tiny House on Wheels build and as we get closer I am starting to realize that my PC is probably going to take up too much space. Basic Specs are: Thermaltake core p3 ryzen 5800x rtx 3090 FE 32 GB ddr4 850w PSU my setup in general, however, will not be much of an issue. What I'm really worried about is space UNDER my desk. I have a 3 monitor setup which might seem like overkill but I do a lot of work from home and could not function efficiently without all 3. To accommodate this, we built our stairs in such a way that my desk will be built into the wall underneath the top step which is more like a landing. which is great for space ON the desk but underneath is a wheel well that has been framed in so I would much rather go with a laptop that I can just dock. So my question is what would be a reasonable price I could get for my current system? Would it make more sense to just sell the individual parts? and with that money what would be the best Intel based gaming capable laptop/dock combination to replace this and still support my monitor setup. Thanks

Intel's EVP&GM accidently leaked information about Thunderbolt 5. EVP&GM of Intel’s Client Computing Group, Gregory Bryant, visited a lab in Israel on Aug. 1 and posted a tweet, but clearly he did not check the picture carefully since it seems like the picture contains information about Thunderbolt 5. Original Tweet (Gregory M Bryant (@gregorymbryant) August 1, 2021): P.S. By the time this news is posted on LTT Forum, the original post has already modified, and the most important picture was removed. Picture source: AnandTech On the poster, it says 80G PHY Technology, which means the new Thunderbolt 5 will have a max. speed of 80Gbps, which is twice of Thunderbolt 4's speed. Thunderbolt 5 will keep using Type-C and downwards compatible. Also, on the poster, it says "… will be based on a novel PAM-3 modulation technology", which means in order to support a higher bandwidth, the Thunderbolt 5 will use PAM-3 as its protocol. On the final line the poster mentions the N6 test chip, which supports this new PHY technology seems to be able to demonstrate a promising result. On the screen it might be a showcase for showing Thunderbolt 5's speed, probably on a PC running the N6 chip (probably a TSMC chip). Overall, in the world where Thunderbolt 4 is not universal yet, Thunderbolt 5 is already on the way. Source: Intel Executive Posts Thunderbolt 5 Photo then Deletes It: 80 Gbps and PAM-3 https://www.anandtech.com/show/16858/intel-executive-posts-thunderbolt-5-photo-80-gbps-and-pam3-then-deletes-it

Hi everybody! I am searching for a new monitor. And I love super ultrawide monitors (is that the real category name?). Any way, I like how thunderbolt allows to have everything connected with a single cable and all the all chaining involved. So my priority is to have a clean setup. I currently work with 3 displays and replacing them with a single 32:9 is “the dream”. I game casually, but do not expect high fps (but who can say no to a 120hz or higher display?). But my main use is work. I do a lot of coding, so a 1440p is my minimum for very crisp text. Does anybody know if this unicorn screen exists? I love how the Odyssey G9 looks, but it is not thunderbolt . I already know that there are many 21:9 thunderbolts out there, but I am discarding them. (I really want and need that extra screen real state ) also, I wish to future proof as most as possible. So, the better the screen... Thanks everyone!

Hi all, need help with a monitor setup i'm trying to get working. we have an unwelcome guest at the party, as usual, and the name, as usual, is........apple basics: i'm trying to hook up an LG Ultrafine 5K thunderbolt display on windows 10 and have it run at 5k resolution. there's this guy who claims he was able to do it, and he wrote a full article about it here. the cat seems to have gotten his tongue when he's asked about any particulars though, so that's why i'm here. the premise is, to run 5k resolution, apple combines the streams of 2 display ports internally on its devices that are running this monitor, and then shoots the signal out the thunderbolt port and into this monitor getting...voila...5k resolution. according to this guy's article, that's what the titan ridge 2.0 card is supposed to do. but, alas, i am getting no such stream combining when i hook up the exact setup he's describing. I've tried this with two different video cards: one of them a quadro P4000, and the other a GTX 1060; no joy with either case. could you guys look into this? i've got a hefty investment sitting here that i'm just not able to get working. your guys' help would be much appreciated. Hello guys, I have a Work-From-Home (WFH) set-up consisting of 2 external monitors connected to a Thunderbolt USB-C hub via HDMI, they used to work great. During the holidays I turned my work computer off never to be light up again until today. But I did test my wife new computer, given that the whole reason of buying her a new PC was for her to be able to use this set-up when I get back to Work-on-site (WOS). We tested it and I believe it worked just fine, allthough I don't remember doing any exhaustive testing I basically just checked if connecting it would turn on charging (sinec we both have Lenovos 65W chargers) and it had a video feed on both monitors. Her PC is Thunderbolt 4 Ready btw, while mine is only Thunderbolt 3. When I turn on my work computer, turns out that the TWO monitors connected to the Thunderbolt hub are recognized as one. They both show the exact same video feed and when I right click the desktop and select "Display Settings" only one monitor is recognized. See image Any ideas on what to do to solve this? Thanks a lot in advance.

Budget (including currency): 3000 USD Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Audio Production, Harrison Mixbus, 32c, Protools, Reaper Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): looking at asrock x570 Taichi with TB add in card ryzen 7 3800x, pcie 4.0 M.2 cards( brand and size undecided), Nvidia 3000 series graphics, all be quiet cases, fans and coolers Hello kind folks, Im a new to this forum, Looking to move away from Intel but have been stuck due to my dependency on Thunderbolt. Now with the dawn of TB on the X570 boards and Ryzen Im looking to build out a new rig. Currently Running: Asus z370 prime A, I7 8700k OC 4.0, 64GB corsair 2600, nvidia 980 ti, 2 samsung M.2 NVME ( 1 500 gb for boot, 1 tb for further storage), Asus ex3 TB card. My problem is not with my computer as a wholes performance, it runs great. It is with Asus EX3 TB card. I am now on my fourth card as the previous 3 have burned out on me. Im tired of its lack of reliability and want to move to something else. I like the Ryzen 3800x for its great single core performance, my research shows this is the most important factor for an audio PC as Digtial Audio workstations have poor multi core cpu and hyper-threading abilities at this time. I use an RME UFX + for an Audio Interface, and yes it does have USB 3.0 which runs great but as my track counts go up the performance goes down faster and Latency goes up compared to TB in my experience thus far. I am Firm with sticking to TB at this time. I am very open to suggestions for MOBO's and CPU configuration. Id like to move forward with the times and Stick with an X570 MOBO to take full advantage of the bandwidth of PCIE 4.0 for TB and M.2 NVME drives. Im somewhat tech savy a but still consider myself a noob researching and finding reliable info to build on. I humbly ask your help and opinions. please give me a shout !

I've sorta got a 2 part'r here... First things first, I'm surprised to find find very few references anywhere on the LTT Forums or otherwise about these intel whitebook gaming notebook's I've come across on newegg today https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9siv0n6bb85313 They seem almost too good to be true: 144Hz display, BTX 1660 TI, i7-9750H, 32GB DDR4 RAM. all the ports you need, and (from all the spec options) seemingly very serviceable and upgradable... And for only $1,200.00 USD?!?!?!? Why is this so affordable, but with little to know news or coverage anywhere? I can't believe there's no LTT video on this! (I checked floatplane and YouTube) Is this too good to be true? Or am I blindly missing some major red flags? The only review is on the one spec'd above, and it's 4/5 stars for minor some very minor cosmetic/fitment issues. My other Question though, if this is somehow too good to be true, does anyone have a recommendation on a cheap windows laptop with minimum 32GB RAM and a thunderbolt 3 port? I'm working double remotely for the next 3 weeks, and while I love my current 7 year old laptop (ASUS Q502L), it is incapable of running the software I need it to run for my job (Software Engineer, need to be able to debug with local DB running). I usually remote into my home desktop for work when I'm out of town. But I'll be across the country for the next 2 weeks, and if something were to happen and I can't remote into that system, I'll have no choice but to quickly order a laptop to work off of. Edit: some more of these whitebooks at other specs, including a 2070! https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9siv0n6bb85307 https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9siv0n6bb85863 https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9siv0n6bb85308 https://www.neweggbusiness.com/product/product.aspx?item=9siv0n6bb85862 Edit 2: Technically there is an LTT video on this, the review of the MAINGEAR Element looks to be the same laptop, with a MAINGEAR logo on it I think:

I want to purchase a dock for the Razer Blade 15 (Early 2020 Advanced Model). I have tried the DELL WD19TB, only to find that the USB and ethernet wouldn't work. I tried all the drivers, even a firmware update but the PC wouldn't detect the dock to start the firmware update - even on an XPS. Having spoken to a DELL engineer whilst at work, it seems like DELL Docks (especially thunderbolt) are definitely not high up on the reliability scale - this does make sense given the amount of DELL dock issues we have had to deal with at work. I'm returning the Dell WD19TB today, and am thinking about the Lenovo 40AN0135EU - THINKPAD THUNDERBOLT 3 DOCK GEN 2 as a next attempt - we have used lenovo docks at work before and I can't think of anyone having issues with them before (granted we have never used the dock with a Razer Blade). Can someone let me know if they have tried/used this with the Razer before, and what levels of success you got with it? Before anyone asks, yes I have done the classic amazon search for "thunderbolt dock", but it seems that all the generic docks (from Elgato, Belkin, Startech, CalDigit, etc.) all either do not have sufficient display ports (I need at least 2 full size displayport ports) or do not supply sufficient power, I'm looking for at least 130W (I know that's not the full 230W that can be used to charge the Razer, but should be enough to stop it discharging when the laptop is in normal use) - trickle-charging is not a problem for me, as I will be having the laptop "docked" for 8+ hours at a time. The Razer Blade 15 Early 2020 Advanced laptop does support USB-C charging - it worked with the DELL WD19TB, and it works with my ~85W Macbook Pro charger, so that's not a worry for me. I wish that Razer would just make a TB3 dock, they're really good with build quality and I have no doubt that it would be a high class "top notch" dock. It would probably get them a lot of money too, manufacturing a device to turn a gaming laptop into a fully-fledged gaming desktop setup with a single cable. First time using this forum, make me proud fellow IT-ers!

I have a Dell XPS 13 9380 that was using a Sonnet eGFX Box with an RX 580. It was working completely fine connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port on the computer, which ran it well. Recently every time I plug in the chord to the port, the eGPU will connect for a couple of seconds, then disconnect and keep reconnecting. I assumed it was an issue with the port or cable, but after switching the thunderbolt cable and seeing the same issues, as well as the port working fine for a charger, it must be something internally that is conflicting with the connection. Can anyone help me figure out how to stop my eGPU from disconnecting/connecting every couple seconds for no reason?

So here's my situation. I'm doing some post FX for a TV series and the edit drives they gave me are OWC Mercury Elite Pro Dock's setup in a Raid 0 and formatted as APFS. I have no access to a modern mac. I'm running a Windows 10 machine with an X570 Taichi and Gigabyte GC-Alpine Ridge Thunderbolt card. Drive is connected to gigabyte card via TB3 cable. TB3 Card and motherboard seem to be playing nice. The OWC Drives are detected in windows and even show up in disk management. I have however, been completely unsuccessful at mounting the drives. Things I have tried: - Paragon APFS for Windows: Can see the drive. If I click the mount button and assign it a drive letter nothing happens. The explore options is greyed out. I've tried restarting the drive, paragon's service and my computer. Note this software works fine for APFS usb drives I've tested. - MacDrive Pro - doesn't see the drive in its main page or repair page. If I open the MacDrive Disk Manager it shows the OWC drive but only 1 parition and my only option is to initialize or format it (not an option) - UFS Explorer - can see the drive and explore the files but as a software has no way to mount the drives for use in other programs. not really an option as I don't have equally sized spare drives to transfer the files to - TransMac - same as UFS explorer. Can see the drive and files, but no way to mount. Does anyone have any experience with APFS on windows? Is there any way to use this drive without a modern mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

So, I recently bought a QNAP TS-473A and also a QNAP QXP-T32P.When I wanted to install the card I realised that I messed up.The card does not match the PCIE slot on the NAS.The PCIe port on the NAS are x4 Gen3, two of them but don't have that first part. So the card fits in the slot but the first part of the card remains unconnected ( in air ).My question is...Can I hack it? Can I connect with the X1 cable the first part of the card and put the other side of the cable in the second slot? Do I risk burning the card or the nas? I can't manage to figure out hot this works regarding powering. The last pictures are from QNAP TVS-1288X which is the nas that the card was designed for. This NAS also cost around 3000+ euro and mine was around 600 euro, so a big difference. Any engineer advise would be highly appreciated as this is the only solution for having a DAS / NAS configuration at this price.

Apologies for the long title! Could someone please confirm the following for me please, - will this Dock allow detection of the peripherals aside from "standard" so that they can be used with their own software (non-Razer) ? (Logitech G Pro Mouse, Keyboard, Headset) - will it be enough to power the above, plus a GoXLR Mini with a r0de PodMic and allow the correct detection? - does the Dock support 1080p/240Hz? Longer story, - I just bought a Razer Stealth with a 1650TI and the 65W power supply is not enough when using Sandboxie for multiple (RaidSL) game instances (battery drains slowly) - the dock above can delivery 90W to laptops; - thinking of buying a Blade 14 AMD RTX3070 to replace my main desktop in the man-cave but I need more connectivity (2x monitors through DP, GoXLR Mini, 2x Logitech Mice, 1x Logitech Keyboard (might prefer over the laptop one). In this scenario, both the laptop charger and the Dock will be plugged to the wall. If someone can suggest a cheaper dock but doing the same or better and not massive size, in the UK, please go ahead Thank you

I have concluded so far that I will need - Corning Thunderbolt optical cable, Caldigit TS4 Thunderbolt dock. and I think ill need a thunderbolt AIC card too, is that correct? if so, 1. I believe ill connect a short DP cable from the GPU to the AIC thunderbolt card attached to the motherboard. 2. connect the Corning Thunderbolt optical cable from the AIC thunderbolt card to the Caldigit TS4 dock that supports high refresh rate monitors. 3. connect DP cable from the Caldigit TS4 to the high refresh rate monitor. is that correct? after all that i should be able to connect all my peripherals to the TS4 dock and i should be set? im just looking for a confirmation.. hoping someone out there has done this other than linus...

Hey all, My question is in the title and down below but man do I need to vent about Lenovo right now so skip if you know the answer read on if you want to hate lenovo more. -I've been on Lenovo for a while and been happy since its easy to fix and parts are cheap. But their current tech service is terrible -My old Lenovo Laptop finally died after 10 so I picked up a Lenovo thinkbook 14s G2 with a 12th gen I7 CPU and I have had nothing but trouble with it -I'm currently a student so the 2 in1 is cool for taking notes but i can take it or leave that. This thing has 2 big issues for me and some others: I cant use my schools Exam Taking software which is Called Examsoft. It keeps seeing my 12th gen CPU as a VM even after I have turned off all virtualization I've had to purchase a cheap HP laptop from best buy to bring in on exam days which is a real pain I am a musician and an audio engineer on the side and use thunderbolt for my Audio Interface a MOTU 828es. guess what THE THUNDERBOLT PORT DOESNT WORK. Lenovo does not have thunderbolt support on this laptop for windows 11 at least yet it shows up as USB 4.0. I checked every support section on their website ran a million diagnostics from Lenovo, Intel, and Microsoft all my hardware works its plainly drivers. They do have a drive for windows 10 on this laptop, guess what I loaded windows 10 updated the driver the thing still does not work. this laptop has been making me pull my hair out. I've even tried installing other versions of this laptop that has TB support on W11 no luck. I have checked the bios there's only a security setting to access the thunderbolt port. nothing about support, enabling TB protocol etc. no bios updates either. I used Lenovo Vantage, service bridge, update tool and MS update to make sure this thing has the latest and even tried to roll it back or delete and get generic drivers. The port itself does work as a usb c port but no reaction when plugging in a TB device on W10 or 11. I have also had a ton of issues with the audio playing on the speakers of this think. Realtek and generic audio drivers from Microsoft both tried out and Frequently during playback audio just glitches when playing from the speakers, not during Bluetooth or wired headphone use. has to be some sort of error on their part So I am getting rid of thee Lenovo and I am interested in the MSI Creator 15 A11UE-491 with the I7-11800H this thing should be more than powerful enough to handle any of my audio needs But wondering if anyone has used Exam soft and know if its compatible with this computer and CPU I cant waste any more time on this so I am reaching out. Also need to know if the TB actually works on this thing. Please if anyone has any info let me know I need to make moves on this ASAP for reference: MSI creator 15 A11ue-491: https://www.newegg.com/black-msi-creator-15-a11ue-491-creating-designing/p/N82E16834156059 ThinkBook 14s Yoga (14”): https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/p/laptops/thinkbook/thinkbook-series/thinkbook-14s-yoga/xxtbxygi400 MOTU 828es https://motu.com/products/proaudio/828es

Im currently switching from my pc to a macbook as my daily driver as I no longer have time for gaming and im trying to figure out one issue. My current setup is a PC connected to a 144hz 1440p gaming monitor via DP (which can also run properly on HDMI 2.0 afaik) and a 4k 60 hz TV via HDMI and i would like to still use them with my mac (monitor for work and TV for media consumption) but the problem is M1 supports only one external display. So I would like to have a device that supports switching between target displays via a button most preferably built in to a thunderbolt/usbc hub. Do such hubs exist? I know i could just switch cables depending on which display I want to use but I would like to have the best possible solution to my problem. Ive also seen some KVM hubs but im not sure if this solves my issue or if im gonna overspend on hardware features Im not gonna use. I know things like Ugreen HDMI splitter exist but i would like to have it built in to my hub so that I dont have a cable mess on my desk. So if anyone has anything to recommend Id be glad to read through your suggestions.

Summary During a "Technology Tour" of their Israel-based Development Center, Intel demonstrated a prototype of their newest thunderbolt revision. The demo ran two 40Gb thunderbolt lanes across a single USB-C cable, resulting in 80Gbps of total throughput, twice what the current Thunderbolt 4 standard is capable of. As of yet, the new spec remains unnamed. Hi Team, I am working in a company as a Software Developer. Recently I started WFH and purchased an LG 27UP850-W monitor and want to use this as my productivity setup. The monitor contains, an USB-C, 2 USB, 2 HDMI and 1 Display port. I am using my companies laptop. My question is, I have connected Keyboard and Mouse to the available USB ports of the LG display. Now my comp. laptop has a thunderbolt port available. 1. Can I connect my laptop thunderbolt port to the USB-C of LG Display? 2. If I can connect, can I output display along with using keyboard and mouse which is connected to LG display? 3. Will my laptop be able to get charged at the same time? Please help me with this. Thanks, Harsh.

So I want to set up my PC out of the room like Linus does. I've seen his 1800 dollar fiber optic hubs but also saw him take the CalDigit TS4 home with him so what does he use that for? Wouldn't it just be way cheaper to run a thunderbolt 4 cable through the walls and get a Thunderbolt dock rather than the whole fiber optic system. What are the benefits to fiber?

Hi all Not a humblebrag, I had issues with this laptop and stopped using it a while ago. I'm in the process of getting our new house set up with HASS, Plex, Unifi etc and wondered how best I could fit this in. I will be using a NUC running the HASS OS, running Plex on my main PC currently but will migrate this away when I can afford to set up a new dedicated server for it etc, or use the laptop. I was wondering whether this could be a good server to run Plex. It has a 9700k and 2080, I've been reading up on Plex and it seems that a dedicated GPU will help with transcoding multiple streams. It also has a battery so sure, effectively has a UPS. The components are pretty power hungry and I'm not sure if this would be overkill/making it more power efficient for use as a server. There seem to be conflicting articles about which GPUs would be best for Plex, realistically I'd probably be using between 4 and 6 streams concurrently at maximum, most likely 3 daily. I've overclocked, over and undervolted PCs before but never really gone for efficiency. Is it as simple as changing some BIOS settings, undervolting/clocking and setting power management to favour maximum battery life etc without sleep enabled? I also have a Caldigit TS3 which can be used with it to expand the IO quite decently, if Plex isn't a good use for it, what would you suggest I use it for? As a side note, if going with the laptop I'd obviously need to go ahead with another system acting as a file server, I'd need this even if I didn't go with it. What would you recommend (hardware wise) for a good starting, rack mountable storage server that I can gradually add more and more drives to? I'm currently saturating 4TB of storage but will start to rapidly expand this amount soon as after moving in I will finally have time to relax more! Being in China, I need to download media to not get censored versions.. Many thanks in advance for any feedback!

I've followed Linus' personal rig for awhile now and have always been interested in running a thunderbolt connection to a different room, but never personally saw any use in it for me. However, now that I've got a 3080ti in my rig and I'm in my own office (instead of just in the middle of my living room) the heat in my room becomes so unbearable I have to keep the door open almost all the time. The noise isn't too nice either. So while driving home from a 14hr road trip I just wondered if I should take the plunge and do the same thing. Just throw my rig into a server chassis like the Silverstone RM42-502, grab a server rack of some sort, have the server rack in the living room and just run a thunderbolt connection to it. Problem is there's multiple things stopping me from taking the plunge: 1. My maximus x hero doesn't support thunderbolt, therefor I'd need to upgrade my cpu, ram, and motherboard (I've been waiting for awhile to do it, and I still don't think now is the time to do so. Plus I don't need the added cost of essentially an entire computer upgrade). 2. I run a triple monitor setup and finding a dock that supports my 2 1080p monitors and my 1440p monitor are a little tricky for me to find. -Plus I'm upgrading to the new G8 soon, so I want to make sure thunderbolt 4 can even handle 4k 240hz with my additional 1080p monitors. -I think I remember Linus saying it's just using display stream compression anyways, so it wouldn't matter. Not sure though. 3. I'm debating the possibility of just running optical DP, HDMI, and an optical USB 3.1 extender for a hub on my desk. -I'm not even sure if I need to run optical at all. It's less than 30ft, so I don't know if it's totally necessary anyways. I was just concerned about bandwidth/signal loss. Any guidance would be awesome. Thanks!
