Thunderbolt support for strix b550-e motherboard
Swazimodo posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
I picked up the b550-e motherboard with a Ryzen 5600x. I picked this motherboard for it's thunderbolt support but in a recent video Linus said that asus has terrible TB support. Does anyone have experience using this board with thunderbolt? A Titianridge card is quite expensive and I don't want to pick it up if that just isn't going to be a thing. -
Hi, I have a Thunderbolt 2 5Big drive from LaCie. My Apple days are long gone, and I now run an AMD Windows PC. I was wondering if there's any way I can get the drive to work on my new system using the USB 3.2 GEN 2 port on the motherboard? Extra info that might help - I managed to get the drive to work on an Intel based Windows laptop. It has a 3.1 USB port I think (no thunderbolt sign, any other way to check?). I had to download a bunch of thunderbolt drivers, I can't recall how I got it to work to be honest. Happy to share info from that machine if anyone needs me to look something up on device manager to confirm some details maybe? Specs: AMD Ryzen 5950x Crosshair VIII Formula Asus Helios Case (also has type c port)

ThunderboltEX 3-TR Not Fully Functional I ordered the ThunderboltEX 3-TR today to work with my ROG STRIX B550-F (Wi-Fi) motherboard. I installed it this afternoon but I’m running into a weird issue where only displays are working, not USB devices. I have a CalDigit TS3 Plus Thunderbolt hub that I’m using. It has a monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, and mic plugged into it. However, only the monitor is working. The USB devices aren’t being detected by Windows. I have permission for thunderbolt turned on for the hub as well. My BIOS is on the latest version but it doesn’t show me settings for thunderbolt for some reason. Anyone encounter this or know how to fix it?

Yeah, so I was wondering since an nvme ssd uses PCIE -x4 slot (same as in thunderbolt), will it be possible to adapt an extra m.2 slot (nvme compatible) to thunderbolt?? I may we way wrong here, please do correct me in that case.

these docks are really cheap on eBay, I googled around and most of the questions are people asking if it worked for older USB ports. The dell documentation doesn't really say much about it either. theoretically it's just thunderbolt 3 so I guess there wouldn't be any real reason it wouldn't work....

I've run into this problem with my external SSD where when i connect it to my Thunderbolt connection on my Windows PC and put my PC to sleep/shut it down, that my SSD won't turn off and starts getting hot. I assume it has something to do with Thunderbolt charging devices like phones while the pc is asleep but when i turned the feature "charge Devices via thunderbolt" off in the BIOS it didn't have any impact on this wierd behavior. Any idea what could be going on here? it's been bothering me quite some time now. Hi, i am currently trying to move my desktop pc into a separate room like Linus did in one of his videos. Setup Motherboard: MSI Z390-A PRO (latest version 7B98v1D) Thunderbolt Card: Gigabyte GC-MAPLE RIDGE (rev. 1.0) Dock: Razer Thunderbolt™ 4 Dock Chroma Windows 10 Edu 64 Bit All the latest Thunderbolt driver to this date installed When I use the included cable from razer the dock works as expected. Displays and USB peripherals are all getting passed through the dock to the desktop pc. When I use the Corning cable only the displays are showing up and the razer dock isn’t lighting up (lights under the dock). So no USB peripherals or ethernet is being transmitted. I tried the dock on my notebook and with razer cable it works flawlessly. With the Corning cable I had some issues in the beginning but I got it work after some time. When I plugged in the cable one way it didn’t work so I switched the end and then I started lighting up and transmitting everything from display to usb peripherals. I ordered another dock from CalDigit to verify if it’s the docks fault or something else. Maybe it has something to do with some bios settings? Thanks for your help in advance Let me know if more information are needed Edit: added some more setup specs

First up, I'm not very forum experienced, so if the topic is in the wrong place or something else isn't right, feel free to inform me of that. To my question, all I generally want to know is, whether I can use a Thunderbolt connection as an ethernet connection. I have a practical example: I own a 13" Asus 2-in-1 that has two Thunderbolt 3 ports. I'm currently thinking about building a SFF computer using a MSI Z590I Unify mainboard which has two Thunderbolt 4 ports. If I could connect the two computers over a Thunderbolt cable and have them establish an Ethernet connection somehow then I could use the laptop as a screen and keyboard for the computer (using Spacedesk) whenever I am not at home, meaning I would only need to carry the computer itself, a power cable for it, the laptop which I have with me most of the time anyway and a mouse which is even optional. It would make for a super sleak setup because the computer could charge the laptop and I wouldn't need to bother with USB-C to RJ45 adapters and ethernet cables and maybe I could even make use of the fast Thunderbolt connection.

I'm contemplating a setup where I have my computer in the basement and connect the display and peripherals via a Thunderbolt (or just plain USB-C) over fiber connection (like the one in https://youtu.be/Dy312cUHumk). The problem I have is that most desktops do not come with a USB-C port and if they did it, they may not be able to carry video. Some video cards have a USB-C output, but I am unsure whether mouse&keyboards connected to it will work out of the box (may need drivers, may not work during boot). In short, my wishlist is: - USB-C/Thunderbolt port on desktop -or- some other adapter that can carry video and USB, but must be over fiber - able to carry video, at least 4k 60Hz - supports mouse&keyboard including in BIOS and all stages of boot (e.g. in Grub) - supports all features on Linux with and without proprietary drivers - should support audio (possible via the display, although in the worst case I could do with an USB adapter) What hardware would you recommend to support this scenario? PS: I found this reference https://dancharblog.wordpress.com/2020/07/20/add-usb-c-with-dp-alt-mode-to-your-desktop-pc/ but it doesn't answer my questions.

Or Rather: Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock USB ports don't work with a Corning Optical Thunderbolt cable. So here is my setup: - be quiet Dark Base Pro 900 Rev.2 Silver with Window ATX Chassis - ASUS TUF B550-PLUS GAMING AM4 ATX Motherboard - AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 3.4GHz 105W 16C/32T 72MB CPU (Requires Graphics) - Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MHz Memory - Noctua NH-U14S Ultra-Quiet Slim CPU Cooler with NF-A15 fan - FSP Hydro PTM Pro 1000W Semi-Fanless Modular PSU, 80+ Platinum OEM - Quiet PC IEC C13 Euro Mains Power Cord, 2m (Type F) - Samsung 980 PRO 500GB PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD (6900/5000) - Samsung 980 PRO 500GB PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD (6900/5000) To this added a * ASUS TUF RTX 3090 O24G Gaming * ASUS ThunderboltEX 4 PCIe Expansion card The Thunderbolt expansion card had me stumped for a while, as it has a pcie power connector, but does not say in the instructions to plug anything into it. For VR in the living room next door, I have connected : Razer Thunderbolt 4 Dock, 3.5mm, RJ-45, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (3.1 Gen 2) Type-A, USB 3.2 Gen 2 (3.1 Gen 2) Type-C, SD, Sort, Aluminium, 8K Ultra HD, 0,8 m With a Corning Thunderbolt 3 Optical Cable (15m) and plugged in a DeLock thunderbolt 3 > 2xDisplayPort. Product names pasted from various mails from the shops where they were bought. So. If I connect the setup as described, Steam tells me that no VR headset is connected - bummer. If I drag my pc into the living room and connect everything directly, it works. If I use the normal (copper) cable that came with the dock, VR Works. If I connect the dock with the optical cable and only use the DisplayPort outputs, but leave the USB3.2 plugged in the computer, it works. The Dock is powered. Some diagnostic numbers from my system: Dock not plugged in: martin@galadriel:~$ echo USB Devce count: $(lsusb | wc -l); echo PCI Device count: $(lspci | wc -l) USB Devce count: 16 PCI Device count: 48 Dock plugged in with optical cable: martin@galadriel:~$ echo USB Devce count: $(lsusb | wc -l); echo PCI Device count: $(lspci | wc -l) USB Devce count: 16 PCI Device count: 49 Dock plugged in with copper cable: martin@galadriel:~$ echo USB Devce count: $(lsusb | wc -l); echo PCI Device count: $(lspci | wc -l) USB Devce count: 22 PCI Device count: 54 So several devices are only available when the dock has power on the thunderbolt connector. Any advice would be appreciated. Lugging my rig into the living room is a nuisance, not to mention the risk that the graphics card or the CPU cooler get knocked loose or worse. M

Hi, I am currently looking for a compatible motherboard that works with a Thunderbolt add-in card and a Corning Thunderbolt cable. So far I tried multiple motherboards with multiple Thunderbolt add-in cards but I didn't get the Corning cable properly working under my desktop pc. With a normal copper cable I got the Dock working but with the Corning cable it only worked at random times. I tried the cable with a MacBook and it worked flawlessly. I could reboot or shutdown the MacBook and the cable would pick up the dock right away. Motherboards Asus TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS Asus ProART Z490 ASRock Z390 PRO4 Gigabyte Z390 AORUS ELITE MSI Z390-A Pro Thunderbolt add-in cards: ASUS ThunderboltEX 3-TR Gigabyte GC-TITAN RIDGE (rev. 2.0) Gigabyte GC-MAPLE RIDGE (rev. 1.0) Budget (including currency): - Other details I currently have an i9 10900k. I tried the z390 with an i9 9900k but the best result I had to far was with the 10900k and the TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS. It worked maybe 1 out 10 shutdowns. Does anyone know which motherboards that are being used in LTTs videos or can someone recommend a motherboard that works with a Corning Thunderbolt cable? In the video below they use the Asrock X570 AQUA but that would require a different CPU. In the video below I found out that they use the Asus Maximus XIII Hero (Socket 1200) Z590 but as I understood this motherboards only supports Best regards and thank you for your help

I'm currently building myself an office and I need to have my PC in a place where I need to fish wires through the wall. Its also a wall that will be hard to work on once the sheetrock is in so I want to run my cables once and not have to worry about it. It's only about 15ft from rear IO to monitor so my current plan is to run Ethernet (because its cheap and easy), Display Port, and Thunderbolt 3. The Ethernet is kind of extra and I probably won't use it. I will have an active DP cable into my GPU since I don't think I can run it through TB3 since its 3440x1440p @120hz with G-Sync. Then I will have TB3 (prob with a TB4 cable for future proofing) for my peripherals including mouse, kb, mic, 1080p webcam. The thing I am worried about there is added latency so I figured TB would be better than USB. Does this sound good so far? For hardware I need to get a Thunderbolt card for my mobo and they have a weird proprietary TB header called ThunderboltEX. I can get one new or used but I can't tell if its required to use TB? Its a PCIe card with a cable to a 5 pin header. Can or should I just use a standard TB PCIe card? I don't mind getting one that isn't top spec because when I upgrade my mobo in the future I will look for one with built in TB 4. To recap, is Ethernet + DP + TB a good set of cables with low latency? Should I use ThunderboltEX or another card? Any recommendations for cables or TB hubs for on my desk? Thanks Specs: Intel i7 7700k Asus Z170-A EVGA RTX 2080 Super 32GB RAM Alienware AW3418DW [3440x1440p @120hz G-Sync] Links: Asus Z170-A Manual Asus ThunderboltEX Card

Hi community. My fiance just invested in a new Macbook Pro to replace her old one as a mobile/home video editing device (wedding/promotional videos). When she is home, I would like to have her be able to hook up to an external monitor for easier viewing. Are there any community recommendations for ones that are known to play well with the 2021 M1 pros? The two I have done a little bit of research on are the LG 27UN850-W and the LG 32UP83A-W. Both should work in theory but there are sparse confirmations of success and several reviews of issues. Our price range is around $500. Truly appreciate any and all suggestions and/or links to other forums pages that may have already solved this

I have 3 monitors, 1 of which is a 144 Hz gaming monitor. I would like to be able to use just one single USB-C thunderbolt connection to switch all my monitors, peripherals, network and misc between my personal computer and my work PC. Preferably I would like to have just 3 displayport outputs and maybe a HDMI for connection to my TV every once in a while. Bonus points would be if there was a dock with 2 USB-C connectors and a switching button so that I do not have to unplug my personal computer in order to connect to my work PC. Just letting me switch between 2 connected computers by a button. I have been searching and found some docks that look pretty good, but I never find anything I feel like fits my exact use case. I don't mind spending a little extra as long as I get a quality product that does what I need it to do. What do you run? What thunderbolt docks do you recommend? What should I be looking out for? Are there any recommended brands? What features should I want to make sure my dock has? Thanks

Hi I build in 2020 my pc and still using it (specs below). The tower and monitors are in my office. I would love to connect my pc to my tv the in the next room, to play there too. I planed to connect my graphic card with an tunderbolt 4 pcie card to a Thunderbolt hub next to the tv (5m distance, optical cabel). there i can split the signal to the tv (hdmi 2.1) and the peripherals. As it seems that no Thunderbolt pcie cards excist that work with my amd motherboard. now my other plan, were i‘m not sure if it works: I have two thunterbolt 4 hubs, one next to the tv and the other at the pc. i connect them together via thunderbolt 4, conect the tv via hdmi to the hub. the problematic sithe is at the pc. would it work to connect a displayport output from the hub to my grafics card to get the signal and the pc via is usbc 3.1 do get the data from the peripherals to the pc. or thos thunderbolt need the thunderbolt connection to the tv? It would be great if someone knows how to get something like this to work. Budget (including currency): 1000.- CHF (not so important) Country: Sitzerland Other details (existing parts lists): TV: - Sony KE-75XH9005 (HDMI 2.1) PC (relevant Parts): - AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - MSI B450 Tomahawk Max - MSI RTX 2070 super Ventus OC

Hi, i have recently seen Linus new house build video and i really liked the idea to have gaming PC in different room (cooling and acoustic). So i would like to do something similar to his old house setup with thunderbolt. I need some advice, how to do it. How to pass Display port signal 1440p 144Hz, usb keyboard/mouse and audio over distance 10 meters ideally over single cable via thunderbolt dock. Could you give me link for the needed hardware? (cable, dock station, etc...)

Hi, In short: Is the gigabyte Titan ridge 2.0 compatible with an mainbord which is not from gigabyte if the mainboard features a 5Pin thunderbolt header? Longer explanation: I am trying to get thunderbolt 3 on my pc. I have a Asus rog rampage vi extreme mainboard which would be compatible with the Asus ThunderboltEX 3, but i cant get my hands on one of these card unless i import a refurbished one, which i am trying to avoid. The newer ThunderboltEX 3-TR does not seem compatible, since it features a 13 pin thunderbolt header. The titan ridge 2.0 seams to also feature a 5pin header for thunderbolt, and in a online shop someone said if that header exists, the manufacturer of the mainboard wouldn’t matter, is that correct?

Hi guys, I was just wondering if the Asus ProArt motherboard, such as the B550 version which also has TB4, would work with Blackmagic Design's Ultra Studio Recorder that uses TB3. I'm sorry if this question seems simply, but USB freaking naming conventions and the whole TB mess confuses me a lot. Thanks, Eli To the mods: I'm sorry if this post is in the wrong category, unsure where to put it as I was wondering on the TB on the Asus ProArt specifically and not TB in general since TB and USB stuff is so messy, so I thought this place would be the good place to put it. Please move it if this fits a better category.

Hi everyone, TL;DR - I am looking for a dock that basically converts old inputs (HDMI & full size USBs) into a Thunderbolt/USB-C port output. I see a lot of docks that connect to a laptop using Thunderbolt/USB-C and provide outputs such as full-size USB, headphone jack, HDMI, etc. I am looking for the reverse of that. I have an older laptop that has 1 HDMI, 2 full-size USB ports that I'd like to plug into the dock and have one Thunderbolt/USB-C connection output on the dock. I currently have a USB-C dongle that I switch between my MacBook and a ThinkPad both of which have Thunderbolt ports, so it's a simple unplug and re-plug to switch all my peripherals and monitor between the two. I'd like to have that new dock also convert all my old laptop's ports into a simple USB-C port that I connect the dongle to and also add my old laptop into the mix. (See picture for clarity) Do the existing docks already work in that way? I don't have one to test that and would like to know before I make a purchase Thanks for any suggestions and help. P.S. The old laptop is a Lenovo Y50-70, still running perfectly well, so don't want to replace it yet

Hey guys, so I have a uad apollo twin which has a thunderbolt 2 connection. I’m about to by my very first custom pc and I am concerned about comparability issues between my audio interface and the pc, which I will be using for recording and creating music I was planning on buying a asus x570f mother board but I found out it doesn’t have internal thunderbolt connections i quickly found out about the asus B550E motherboard which does have an internal thunderbolt connection. As the connection on the mother board io has usb c and not Thunderbolt I wouldn’t be able to use it unless I use this adapter I found from Apple, here is the link: Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01M72VEQR/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_QNAH9882AAXXKEM3PMEJ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I just want to confirm this would in fact work as I intent it to, I would plug it into the audio usb c port on the io if not, I have looked at getting a pcie thunderbird expansion card, here is the link: GIGABYTE GC-TITAN RIDGE 2.0 (Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Card Component) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08BC11XW8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_V6A9TMZBCTN12C1P0614?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 I just want to make sure either of these options would this work for audio as intended before I purchase ?!?! any help would be brilliant thank you !!

Hi all. First time posting here. I've been really enjoying the WAN show lately so it's about time I joined the forums. So I'm considering the MSI MEG Z590I Unify motherboard for my i9-10850K build. Already purchased the CPU, got a great deal on it. I'm pretty much set on this board because I absolutely need the native Thunderbolt connectivity for professional audio work (audio interfaces tend to be finicky with expansion cards) and it's the only Thunderbolt board currently in stock in my region. I like its other features and form factor too. I'll probably go for a micro-ATX case rather than a mini-ITX for better airflow and CPU cooler clearance, while still keeping it fairly portable. No GPU for now but hopefully later on. I don't plan to do any extreme overclocking, but I'd still like to do some reasonable OC for editing and transcoding video, rendering big audio projects with CPU-intensive plugins, some database work, compiling and virtualization. Needless to say I'm also a heavy multi-tasker and serial browser tabs abuser (don't give me that look, Linus!). Here's where things get interesting... There are very few reviews of the Z590I Unify out there and they're not comprehensive, but there's a lot of tests and reviews of the previous generation MSI Z490I Unify showing it was a competent overclocker. Supposedly the Z590I has the exact same VRM solution. There are some minor changes in the layout, though. For instance, the little VRM cooling fan and the fan grill on the rear are now closer to the top instead of near the middle, probably because of the added rear ports. But looking at the pictures side to side something stood out to me: on the Z590I there are no capacitors next to the inductors to the left of the CPU socket. I thought they could be hidden under the heatsink, but I found a sublimely auto-translated review with photos where they took it apart and presto chango, still no capacitors along the left inductors. The capacitor count by the top inductors is the same on both boards and the other caps around the I/O also seem equivalent. Does this board actually have 5 fewer VRM capacitors than its predecessor? Now, my knowledge of VRMs is very limited, I recon there may be some other components making up for it. Does anyone know if those missing capacitors would affect the overclocking performance or reliability? Does that make it more prone to power spikes or instability? Will the Samsung Girl steal my heart from A Goofy Movie's Roxanne? Find out after a word from our sponsor. Also, if anyone has any experience with that board I'd love to read your general comments about it. Cheers! So i will be installing a thunderbolt 4 card in my PERSONAL RIG 2021 (i had to xD), because my case is a inwin 915 which is beautiful but getting access to the rear IO is a pain in the A##. So i have been looking around and i love the look of the Corsair thunderbolt 3 dock they just released, But the cal digit dock (the one Linus uses) looks more practical ( I have not started doing research into the exact specs of the two to compare). I am not limiting myself to just those 2 brands so i am open to any suggestions. But i wanted to know from my fellow techies what every one thinks is the best thunderbolt dock ?

random question. Would I be able to link my MacBook Air to a pc via the usb-c? I know you can't do it with older USB but I think usb-c is bidirectional which makes me think that they might be able to connect two computers together. I don't understand that much about usb-c/thunderbolt.

What is the best thunderbolt 3 dock for use with windows, I need 4k 60hz on 2 Display ports, and possibly another display output, and as many USB ports as possible. I do not need laptop charging as my Alienware A51M uses WAY to much power for that anyway. a button to turn on my laptop on the dock would be nice, but is not a deal breaker. Looking at Amazon, it seems that everyone that I have loooked so far have at least %8 1 star reviews, aren't there any out there with stellar performance?
