Hey guy. Just joined the forum Background info, you can skip it: I have a corridor next to my room, which i don't use, and is leading to outside. So the corridor is always cold, because it is not isolated. Since it is always cold, i have been wondering, if I could place desktop pc out there and then wire it to to my desktop (around 20 feet) Problem: I've seen Linus running Thunderbolt from his server rack to his, and his wife, desktop pc without any problem, and i want to do the same. I have seen the "Personal rig update" 1-final, and still haven't figured out how, he both graphics and other I/O though the cable. I can see he uses some kind of card wired to the gpu, but i don't know the name for it.

Hi all, I’m looking for a desktop PC with a decent GPU (At least 1070/6gb), with thunderbolt port over usb-c, and a small form factor that is not mandatory. At The moment The only machine I’ve found on The market is The MSI VORTEX g25 8re but I would like a “real” desktop, less loud and no overheating. no time ti build my own unfortunately any alternative on The market? Thunderbolt is mandatory thanks!!!

Long-time watcher of LTT, first time poster. Currently, I have a LinksKey 2 Port USB KVM switch connecting a dual-monitor setup to my PC. On the other end, it connects to a Dell Thunderbolt dock, which then connects to my laptop. My KVM is failing. The KM part of the KVM isn't working right, probably because of the internal USB hub. Between the webcam, mechanical RGB keyboard, mouse, dual monitors, etc., there's a lot of power draw, and it never handled it well to begin with. Also, the cabling is still a nightmare. Both PC+Laptop are running Windows 10. How can I use the power of Thunderbolt to minimize the cable mess? Can I take my existing Dell Thunderbolt dock and buy some sort of USB-C "redirect switch" to direct the cable from the PC or the laptop? Does a PC even support this kind of setup? IOGEAR sells a Thunderbolt 3 docking station, but I already have the Dell dock as a single place for inputs. IOGEAR also sells a Thunderbolt 2 KVM/Dock, but I have no idea if a Windows 10 PC will support version 2. The interwebs fail me on information about this subject.

The title says it all: Thunderbolt 2 Capacitive-Touch Monitor - Does it exist?! I have a set up where I would really benefit from a touchscreen monitor with peripheral plugs (USB for flash drive, headphones, special tools, etc). The best value touchscreen I've found is the Planer PCT2235, but to have a thunderbolt dock is inconvenient because this monitor is on a multi-axis wall mount. Cost is not an issue and color accuracy is not a priority, but it must be capacitive, <60Hz refresh rate, preferably have a low latency rate, and above all else... the monitor MUST be Thunderbolt 2 compatible to accommodate directly plugged peripherals. If it Thunderbolt 3, but a 3 to 2 adapter accompanies the find, that is also acceptable. I'm exhausted from research. Thank you for your help!

This is a more kind of why "there is not (yet)" type of question. Why there is not a high end video card with USB Type-C (thunderbolt) video output? For example, what if I want a pro-sumer rig, with 3 screens, but don't want all the 6 cables (3 power, 3 video) that come with it. Mabie, only 1 usb type C chaining the 3 screens directly to the video Card, or maybe, just 3 direct cables from the card. Could the architecture support it?

Hello lovely people, So we are creating an editing studio, and if someone here is happy to help us spend some money, please give your suggestions. The setup: We are producing lots of video content (not youtube before anyone asks), filmed on multiple Blackmagic URSA mini PRO's, different settings, on average 100-150mb/s files (we don't go full 513mb/s RAW yet but may want to). Naturally this results in terabytes of footage very fast. And need a long term solution for storing. And Ideally we need very fast access to that storage so that editors could work right off that storage. The problem: If we build a large storage server, and then have more than a couple editors hitting the server at at the same time is 10Gbit fast enough for multiple connections? Adding Thunderbolt 3 connectivity to the server would be great, but with the current max cable lengths (2m/6ft?) it would be cruel to make editors sit in the server room :). So maybe we should also get a large thunderbolt equipped NAS like QNAP TVS-1282T3, for editing and short term storage, and use the server for long term storage? Or is 10Gbit plenty fast for what we need? Or are there longer thunderbolt3 cables? or some other way to have super fast connections to a storage server from further than 2m/6ft away? Thoughts and suggestions? Thanks in advance

Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a laptop. I'm in college, and my budget is roughly $1500USD. I need it for use as a daily driver. Tasks/Programs: MySQL work RedHat programming Linux Administration Basic Office Applications Chrome in background (needs hefty amounts of RAM) WireShark PuTTY Cisco VPN MATLAB Personal Wants (Software) Want to use it to store my DnD stuff, like maps and such, so I've been looking at 2 in 1's for drawing purposes I'd accept being able to do light games like Minecraft, Undertale, Terraria, but ideally I'd like to be able to play the Dark Souls series on low settings Skype Photoshop Premiere Note taking on OneNote with drawings to accompany examples Light drawing for small art projects Personal Wants (Hardware) I'd like it to be reasonably portable, enough to carry around every day , so roughly 4.4 lbs or so Long enough battery to where I don't have to live next to the outlet. Preferably 7+ hours on a single charge I really like Razer's aesthetics, but I'm a sucker for any black aluminum finish I use an external GPU with my sister's Razer Blade Stealth for LAN parties, so Thunderbolt 3 is greatly wanted, nearly mandatory for me I'm not a fan of flashy branding and aesthetics, hence why Razer laptops aren't my preference I like metal construction for the better cooling it offers as opposed to plastic and carbon fiber So far, I've been considering the New Spectre x360 15 inch 2018 edition, the XPS 15 2-in-1, both of which release in the spring, and the Eve V. What kills it for me with the Spectre is the bulk, price tag, and I'm not the biggest fan of the copper accents. The XPS, price, silver and carbon fiber look. Eve V, the flimsy hinge on the kickstand, the low amount of levels of pressure on the pen, as well as the super low power processor, I'd much prefer a 15W chip as opposed to a 4.5W. So if anyone has any suggestions, that would really help me out guys. Thanks!

So, weird question. Can a PC function as an external GPU? My work laptop is a Lenovo Yoga model, which means that it has built in wacom support for the screen. However, it has a i7-7500U and no video card. I'm wondering if it is possible to hook it up to a new PC and use its video card over thunderbolt. I will have a new desktop PC soon, and this might influence choices.

Are there any external Graphics card cases out there that are under 200$? I have found some solutions that use the mini PCI-E slots located in most laptops, but this would require having a cord hanging out of my laptop. I would be fine with any DIY solutions or prebuilt options, I just what to find a solution that is under 200$ (Excluding the graphics card of course). Preferably, I would like it to be powered over Thunderbolt 3 as well. Thanks for all Suggestions TheGodlyJorts

Does anyone know if it is possible to build a high speed DAS/NAS using thunderbolt and GBe? Im looking to build a storage solution for editing workflows (video4k,lightroom,backup) for my thunderbolt3 iMac. It would also be a gigabit NAS for any other devices on the network, like gaming pc library. Would it be possible to utilize the thunderbolt connection from the iTX board to the iMac? Or any other thunderbolt enabled computers? Possible Build part list: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/LFsLr6 A theoretical breakdown: If possible: NVMe cash > 4x2.5"SSD RAID 4,5,0,10 > backs up to > 3.5''8TBx2 in RAID 1 > backs up nightly on network. iMac using thunderbolt or USB 3.1 to the server. (10GB to the mac would be great without using the 16xPCI slot) Other devices on the network will connect via GBe The two spare 2.5'' external cages will be used for hot swapping OS's and physically moving large files to other locations. The plan is to run windows in a VM via KVM using fedora plus a file server. The windows VM for living room TV gaming 1080p 30-60fps is more then enough. This "highspeed" box would then backup each night to a much slower main redundancy server elsewhere on the network.

Hello, I'm building a new professional workstation for my creative work. My work is graphic design including some photo editing and motion graphics but mostly my work revolves around vector based print/ web -design. I've ordered a new computer to power my needs for the forseeable future but I would need a good, stable and reliable backup/storage plan for my setup. My plan as of now is to have: iMac 27" 2017 with 512Gb of PCIe SSD Samsung T5 500Gb/ 1Tb -external USB 3.1 Gen2 SSD https://goo.gl/GwbLQi Transcend StoreJet 25M3 1Tb -external USB 3.0 HDD https://goo.gl/v9KXBU LaCie 2big Dock Thunderbolt 3 8Tb -external Thunderbolt 3 HDD https://goo.gl/HEVojW The usage would be: iMac internal ssd would store my software and libraries (fonts, colors etc.) Have a directory for latest projects I'm working on because of very fast speeds. This would be 2-3/4 of the drive storage. Samsung external ssd would be a extension for the internal storage and to take with me if needed to work at somewhere else than in the office. It would store latest and already done projects before they will move to long term storage Transcend external HDD would be used with the OSX Time MAchine to clone and backup the internal + external ssd alltogether or at least the internal one. Backup if the computer itself fails. Lacie would be the long term storage. 2x4Tb drive in RAID 1. I would copy once a month the internal and the external SSD's to it. RAID 1 would secure a backup for my archived projects. This device would power the storage, my external 1440p monitor, CF/SD card-reader, Transcend Time Machine drive Now, how does this sound? Any improvements or suggestions to go with? What would be the best way to automate this whole process? Time Machine is easy but could I get some software to move/copy my internal+external ssd's specific folders to the lacie? RAID 1 will do the rest. I would LOVE to have the long term in NAS so I could access the files perhaps from home if needed but that might but too much on the budget... All the best, Asp

Hey friends, I've been planning a rackmount chassis build for a long time now that is designed as a catch-all productivity machine for music production, programming, schoolwork, etc. And for those unfamiliar, the chassis will be physically isolated (in a closet) from the peripherals so as to produce a cleaner desk environment 100% free of fan noise, something actually not that uncommon in the world of audio production. Anyway, something i'm not too clear on is if it is possible to achieve non-integrated graphics performance without the use of a eGPU like the razer core. Since the only cable running from the computer will be a single thunderbolt 3, likely coming from some random thunderbolt pcie expansion card, what I've read seems to indicate that it will be pulling only integrated graphics performance, even if there is a GPU installed in the system. Is this the case? Assuming this is the case, integrated graphics is not something I have a big issue with - the machine is going to be doing almost no gaming. For integrated GPUs i'm considering the intel i7 5775C. I would like some feedback in regards to what platform i should use. I ideally would like to dual boot macos and win10 but i have literally 0 experience in the world of the hackintosh. Is AMD worth considering? Lastly, i've had mixed results researching thunderbolt docks. it seems that they can be riddled with issues of disconnects between power cycles (something i've experienced with usb docks) and the like. given that they are so expensive i would like to get my money's worth. I need atleast 4 back facing usb ports (usb2/3), and the capability to run two (or potentially three) displays. An sd or microsd card reader would be a huge plus as well. Does anyone know what linus is using? Thanks

So my CPU (i7-4790k) gives 16 lanes and my mobo (ASRock H97M PRO4) offers 1 PCIe 3.0 x16, 1 PCIe 2.0 x16, 2 PCI. My 1080 ti takes up 16 lanes of the PCIe 3.0. Would adding a Thunderbolt 2 AIC which takes up PCIe 2.0 x4 effect the performance of my 1080 ti with its PCIe 3.0 x16? If so, how much of an impact would it have? What if it was Thunderbolt 3 AIC which uses PCIe 3.0 x4? I'm not sure which category this question belongs in, so apologies in advance if I placed it in the wrong one.

So I was wondering would it be able to input video signals from let's say a console to a laptop with thunderbolt ports? As it is possible to transfer video data from an external gpu such as razer core via thunderbolt to the built in display of laptops.

Just saw the video by Linus on the Aorus Gaming Box. I have an ASUS laptop that does not have Thunderbolt 3. The closest I/O that it has to this is mini display port. Link to specs linked below. I'm trying to get some more life out of laptop by enhancing the graphics capabilities. 95% of the time I use my laptop with an external display. Is it possible to adapt mini displayport to Thunderbolt to the Aorus Gaming Box. Would like to verify this first before spending money. I use a 1080p monitor with my laptop and don't have any plans of going to a higher resolution display anytime soon, so even if the mini displayport throttles the connection it wouldn't be the end of the world for me. Has anyone tested this or are there any other options for laptops that don't have Thunderbolt 3? https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Laptops/N550JK/specifications/

Just curious whether thunderbolt 3 would ever be a viable alternative to SATA for motherboards. The only reasons why I can imagine it wouldn't be are: 1. Isn't compatible with motherboards (which doesn't make sense to me seeing as you can boot from flash) 2. Storage wouldn't take advantage of it. 3. It's too expensive.

Hey guys, hope everyone enjoyed the vacations. I bought a Dell u2718q monitor (very good deal !!), i will receive it in a couple of days. I am planning to connect my 2 laptops to it. one will be through the HDMI and the other through the thunderbolt (the only avaialble in xps 9360 for some reason !!). Now i have 2 questions please 1- can I use the included displayport to mini displayport cable to connect the monitor to the thunderbolt port in XPS 13? or is it a different port and I have to use a thunderbolt/ usb C to displayport cable? 2- i have a USB wireless mouse and keyboard, what will be the best way to connect those to both laptops at the same time without a lot of hassle. I thought of connecting the USB receiver to the downstream port of the monitor but I am not sure if that will allow me using them with both laptops what do you think?

My friend and I, both got laptops that have thunderbolt 3. For an upcoming project we have to transfer a around 20 gigs of data between us and was wondering whether using a thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 3 type c cable would allow us to transfer files, or do we have to use the good old put it on a hard drive and give it to him

Hey folks, New PC builder here, I have a gigabyte z390 gaming x mobo, in an NZXT H510 case, I was hoping to use the usb c, 3.1, front header, but my motherboard doesn't have a header for the usb 3.1. can I replace it with a thunderbolt 3? Is that something that I can plug into the thb_c header on this mobo, or am I in a pipe dream Thanks

Hello LTT community, I had a quick question for you all. I was wondering if you can use a Thunderbolt add-in PCIe card without using a Thunderbolt header on the motherboard. In theory it could work because they already use the PCIe bus, so do you need another header for it to work on a motherboard without one? Any information is welcome, and I looking more specifically at Thunderbolt 3, because Asus has an add-in card aalready available. Thanks, DAGGER51

Hello everyone I'm a small time computer gamer as well as an enthusiast...I wanted to take my computer and put it in my closet so I could run the cables from the closet to look less crowded ft wires at my desk...now here is the catch I want to try to run all of my wires into a hub that makes them all go down to 1 wire that I can run to another hub that splits them up again...which brings me to thunderbolt (and I don't know thunderbolt that well)...what I want to run through the hub is 4 displays (preferably hdmi) at least 8 USB ports (2.0) and that's about it...let me know what you suggestion are to how to do this...also if Linus sees this (make a video) pls
