Hello everyone, Am I the only one who thinks the ideal setup would be a quad core, thin and light laptop to carry around, preferably without an internal gpu to accomodate a larger battery and lower the price tag; paired with an external gpu dock via thunderbolt 3? Apparently I am because I don't think any manufacturer has released such a laptop, or is there some mythical beast I don't know about? I know there are laptops like the Razer Blade Stealth and the XPS 13 but they all have dual cores with hyperthreading. And with more games taking advantage of 4 processing cores I think these won't last very long. Then you could say why not buy the normal Razer Blade or an XPS 15, well they have internal gpu's and I'd rather trade an internal gpu for a lower price tag and longer battery life. So have you guys seen a thin and light, portable, 1080p (again to keep cost down, save battery life and i think 4k doesn't make sense on a laptop screen), thunderbolt3, afordable laptop, post the link below! Thanks a lot and enjoy your day!

I was trying to manage cable clutter, so I'm in the process of shifting as many things as possible over to the thunderbolt 3 ports. I decided to try and power (by power I mean driving the display, not power as in supply electricity) one of my monitors with the thunderbolt 3 port and leave the other monitor plugged into my graphics card. Now, I can't get both the monitors to remain on at the same time . Is the thunderbolt port using an internal graphics chip set to drive my monitor? If so, is there a way to allow me to use the internal chip set and my graphics card to drive my monitors at the same time ? EDIT: I have tried using passive and active thunderbolt 3 cables. Thank you in advance. Grim

Will my Gigabyte Gaming 7 z170x motherboard work as a Thunderbolt 3 dock for my Macbook Pro 13'' running windows 10? Yup, that's the idea I just had. I will be switching to the MBP for work reasons but I still love gaming. For many of the games I play the cpu is not stressed at all, so an eGPU (GTX 1080 in the AKiTiO Node) might work (though the Node is $300). I also have a lot of peripherals and dongles, so I might end up having to get a thunderbolt 3 dock ($200+). And I just though... my motherboard has thunderbolt 3, PCIe slots, USB slots, ethernet and more... and I have a power supply. Could I build an open air test bench kind of set-up to work as a dock for my MBP (booted as windows)? If anyone can imagine this working, or can offer me a more elegant way to do this... that'd be great.

I see posts on the forums and around on reddit etc with mixed info on the LG Ultrafine 5k and thunderbolt 3 and windows support etc etc etc.... so first of all it CAN be done but I did this thought I'd dispel a few common myths I find online: You can't: -Run a thunderbolt to dual display port cable adapter to power this guy they aren't bidirectional -Use DisplayPort to usb c cables all over on amazon and stuff because they again only convert one way from thunderbolt 3-->DisplayPort and not the other way -Use the thunderbolt or USBc headers on most motherboards because often times they DON'T support TB3 or they aren't able to send the display signal correctly using iGPU As I was desperately attempting to get my monitor to work I discovered the following AIC from ASRock: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815548003 I found an Asus card claiming similar spec but reviews and lack of supporting info on their website led me to believe it wouldn't work at all... After researching the specifications on the ASRock website I found this line in the manual (manual pdf): So at this point I'm thinking whaaaasaaaaaaaa after watching the LTT video on the 5k Ultrafine display techquickie Linus noted that apple does funky proprietary stuff to pass through two DisplayPort signals through the single cable.... BUT ASRock out here claiming they can do the same thing??? I HAD TO TEST THIS... So after looking through the manual for compatible z270 motherboards that had a thunderbolt header I went ahead and picked up the AsRock Z270 Extreme4 and ASRock AIC from newegg. I threw in my 960 pro, a titan XP, single dim, and a 6700k on the board. Plugged in the AIC with the special cable that plugs the AIC into the thunderbolt header on the mono. Booted into windows and installed the thunderbolt 3 driver from the ASRock website. I shutdown the computer, plugged in the TWO included DP and DP-mDP cables into the GPU and then back into the AIC... booted and plugged in the LG 5k AND BOOM FULL RESOLUTION 60HZ NO TINKERING It just worked seamlessly and I've had no issues. Unfortunately the speakers aren't working correctly (which is weird because my macbook running bootcamp can drive the monitor at 4k with speakers etc...) but it works! I've got a hefty OC on the titan XP and was able to run GTA V at 5k with an average 65 frames very high to ultra settings. The colors look fantastic and the screens way better than the dell 5k IMO. TL;DR You can drive the 5k ultrafine with an ASRock AIC and a Compatible asrock board its got 10bit color and looks gorgeous

In the recent video by LTT, Linus said that Thunderbolt 3 on Windows can't run 5K, but wasn't TB3 always advertised as capable of running 2 4K displays @ 60Hz each, then why can't it run 5K? And can't even the PCIe 3.0 x4 TB3 expansion cards run 5K@60Hz ?

Hi All, Does anyone here have any real-world experience with the new Dell TB16 Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Specifically the 240W version and how reliable it is at powering a Dell XPS 15 9550 as the prospect of powering my laptop whilst connecting to all my peripherals simultaneously via a single cable is extremely enticing, particularly as my laptop is my daily driver that I take with me everywhere. I read some horrifying reviews about the TB15 some months back and decided to hold off until Dell got their act together, however I'm finding it quite difficult to find any reliable reviews of this function on the web. If anyone with actual experience in using the TB16 could provide some insights I'd very much appreciate it! Thanks in advance! Lloyd

I want to connect to a desktop (wireless or wired) via a laptop (close by, in a medium sized office) without the latency of teamviewer or splashtop. Also is anyone working on a thin laptop like device (screen, keyboard and battery to connect to a desktop) kind of like the neptune concept?

After reading this blog post on USB C and seeing it start popuping up on almost all new phones and devices. Plus having Thunderbolt 3 added into the mix. We are going to be seeing a lot of confusion on this new connector. I think it is time for a new/updated Tech quickie on USB-C, hopefully help people figure out that just because it plugs in doesn't mean it will actually work, and in fact could damage something.

Alright so i have a Dell XPS 13 9350, that has a USB-C port that support the Thunderbolt 3 Protocol I am trying to set up an external GPU and here is my plan -External PCI-E Slot (V8.0 EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock) -HDMI 2.0 Cable -HDMI 2.0 to Thunderbolt 3 Adapter The HDMI cable will run NOT from the graphics card, but from the External Dock itself to tranfer the data to the Thunderbolt 3 port. Will this work? Hi Everyone, I purchased a Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1070 Gaming Box in hope for using it with my Razer Blade Stealth 2016. It initially worked, although now when I connect it, it continuously disconnects and reconnects. I have reset my laptop, reinstalled Windows 10, reinstalled drivers and everything else under the sun - are there any other things I could do? Thanks and much appreciated, Harry

Is it possible to add a add-in thunderbolt 3 card on a Ryzen Motherboard?

Hi all! I have a Macbook Pro (Yeah, I left the PCMR for a little while) and I'm trying to get the SSD from my gaming setup (which already has windows installed on it) to run on the macbook. I have an external enclosure that's USB 3.0, and I'm running it through an adapter to my thunderbolt port. My question is, how do I work the software side of things? Is it possible? I've read a few threads on the topic, but I haven't found anything yet that actually makes it work. Any help is great! Thanks! PS: Yes, I am aware that running an OS from an external hard drive is not ideal. My max transfer speed is 5 gbps if I'm lucky.

Hello all, I would like to create a thunderbolt 3 docking station of sorts that both my 15in Macbook Pro and wife's 13in Macbook Pro (no touchbar) could use, but I'm having difficulty figuring out something user friendly and aesthetically pleasing. Essentially, I would like to have three 4k monitors, power, and several USB devices all connect with two thunderbolt 3 plugs. I only have my laptop, a mouse, USB microphone, and USB MIDI keyboard so far, so I'm pretty much starting from scratch here. Budget is about $2,000. Use will be productivity focused with some very light gaming (Civ, Worms, Minecraft), so 60Hz is fine. 27in, VESA mounting, and Freesync are also desired if possible. From my research, it looks like a single thunderbolt 3 cable can run up to 2 4k displays at 60Hz. Thus, my general plan is to dedicate one thunderbolt cable to two displays and the other to the third display and an external backup drive. Then I'd sprinkle my less data intensive USB devices throughout using either built in USB ports on the displays or a USB hub if necessary. Does that make sense? A dock like the vertical Hengedock is attractive to get rid of cable clutter and transform it into a truly single plug and play solution. Although this model will not fit both Macbook sizes. The Dell UltraSharp 27 4K display really caught my eye. (27in, 4k, IPS, HDR, VESA, bezel-less for $500!) However, they don't have thunderbolt 3 inputs. There exist some thunderbolt 3 to dual displayport adapters, however I'm not sure if they would A) charge my laptop from the display and B) limit USB performance of devices attached to the monitors' USB ports. There doesn't seem to be any thunderbolt 3 monitors on the market right now that support daisy chaining and full 87 Watt charging, though both should be possible. I would like whatever accessories I buy to last 10 years since both 4k and thunderbolt 3 are forward-looking. The correct solution may be to wait a year or two until the right products come on the market. Any input would be great! Is my general thought process correct? Am I way too soon to be attempting this type of setup? How should I distribute my USB devices? Are there any products you know of that would suit my needs? Would a thunderbolt 3 dock or an external graphics card enclosure be worth the high prices? Could I purchase one monitor now and complete the full setup later? What is the best VESA mount to use? P.S. If you feel inclined to hate on my laptop choice, just read Macbook Pro as Razerblade Stealth

Hi! Quite recently bought a mb pro touchbar version and I have been looking for a good raid storage option that supports the newer thunderbolt 3 standard. Lacie has the 6big but it is quite expensive at almost 3000 euros with the "smaller" 24TB disk option. I don't really need insane amounts of storage even 6TB would be plenty for a long time but I need redundancy AND most of all SPEED (raid 5?). How would you guys approach this issue? Have even thought about building a rig myself but I would much rather buy something that just simply works a 100% with no extra tinkering and fear that I mess up my data or can't recover when there is a HD failure at some point. I am also bias towards hardware raid issues and have my doubts about the software raid rigs because I use multiple machines in my network sometimes. So I guess my question is - Is the lacie the only option? (cons: expensive as hell) - A secondary cheaper option? - Can you buy the 6BIG with no hard drives? - Wait for a while so there's more options on the market? - Any suggestions would be great

Hi All! Working on my mancave and I have a pretty technical question. I have a MSI Stealth Pro (GS63VR 7RF) powering an amateur music studio with 2 displays (Laptop is closed) and 4 USB devices. However, I'm choosing a laptop over a desktop to do so because I have workstation needs outside the apartment and I want one computer I can take from place to place. So I've worked on maximizing what is connected to the laptop when I'm home and minimizing the actual connections. Now I can get everything connected to the laptop with just two cables: the power cable for the laptop and one usb-c hub( IOGEAR USB-C Dual DisplayPort Monitor Portable Dock - GUC3CMST amazon link). It only has one SS USB-A plug, but I run it to my Dell U2515H and use the monitor as a USB hub. OK, long winded, but here's the problem. It looks like Intel is driving my displays, not Nvidia: see attached screenshot. If I want to play a game on this setup, do I HAVE to ditch the USB C hub? I know, its just 2 more cables, but they're getting worn and it does make a difference to only use the power cord and USB C hub in my setup. Thanks, -Push

I have sort of a weird question about the Thunderbolt 3 expansion cards. All these expansion cards plug into the PCIe 3.0 x4 slot on the motherboard. But I guess the bandwidth of a PCIe 3.0 x4 slot is something less than 4 GBps and the bandwidth of a single Thunderbolt 3 is 40 Gbps (5 GBps). So how does this work ? Some expansion cards even offer 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports. Is there something to do with the Thunderbolt headers on the motherboard ?

Hello! I am building a workstation for Video Editing in Premiere and Compositing/Color in After Effects and Resolve. I work a lot with Red and Arri footage: from 720p, to a lot of 4k, 5k and sometime even 8k (thank god for proxy workflows). *Thunderbolt is a must so unfortunately AMD is out of the picture So... The only Mobos I was able to find with official support for thunderbolt 3 are from Gigabyte. The GA-X99P-SLI and the three Z170X-Gaming Mobos. So Z170 Chipset vs X99. Both have the features I need however I am leaning towards the X99 due to having more PCI lanes, and more RAM lanes. After a lot of research I realized none of the Asus Mobos support Thunderbolt 3, and the PCI card they provide is not reliable at best, unusable at worst (its only Thunderbolt 2 as well). My budget is 1000 dollars but this does NOT include GPU and HDDs which I already own. A 980ti and two 1TB Samsung Evo 850 SSD's and plenty of HDD's. Here's what I put together so far, let me know what you think! I especially need help with picking RAM as its the area I know least about. Thank you! Link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/33hZm8 1. Budget & Location 1,000.00 USD (not including GPU and HDDs) California, USA. 2. Aim Video Editor, Colorist, Compositor. 4k and even 8k video (Red+Arri). Thunderbolt 3 is a must. Software includes: Avid, Premiere, After Effects, Resolve, Photoshop, Cinema 4D, Pro Tools and Autodesk Smoke. 3. Monitors Own a 10bit monitor, eventually would like to add a reference monitor. 4. Peripherals No peripherals, 5. Why are you upgrading? Current workstation is an aging Mac Pro 5,1 great for a lot of work even in Bootcamp. However I need a new system as backup, and thunderbolt support. Mac Pro would continue to be used as a rendering/transcoding beastie.

I have a thunderbolt display and I've been looking for motherboards that have compatibility for it. I read about the Gigabyte z270 Gaming 7 having thunderbolt 3 compatibility. Question, do I need the Asus Thunderbolt EX III card still? The ex3 was supposed to plug into the thunderbolt header on the motherboard, then take the output from your graphics card and multiplex it as a signal that a thunderbolt monitor recognizes. Has anyone tried this with any success?

I want to buy a laptop, which is easy to take at work and have strong processor for gaming. I think a thunderbolt 3 laptop will do job for me but I don't want to spent lots of money on it (as I will also buy Razer core as soon as possible) so can anyone suggest me a cheapest thunderbolt 3 laptop with atleast quard core cpu, having good cooling solution and have ram expansion option. Screen size, keyboard, trackpad, RGB etc etc not important.

Hey everyone, So I want to get a new external hard drive. My desktop has a usb c 3.1 port where as my laptop (razer blade 2017) has a thunder 3 port. Would I be able to use the hard drive between these 2 port if it's the hard drive is setup for thunderbolt 3? I've been trying to find the answer on google but can't. Thanks in advanced!

I have recently purchased a MSI motherboard that has the Thunderbolt connector on board and want to add thunderbolt to my rig. I can not seem to find a MSI branded Thunderbolt 3 add in card. Couple of basic newbie type questions here. I know for Thunderbolt 3 you must have PCI-E3.0 lanes, check, have that. I also know that you must have the on board Thunderbolt 5 pin connector. Mine is on there and marked JTBT1. Check, I have that too. For video I also know a pass through cable must be hooked up from my video cards DP output to the add in cards input, also no issue. What I don't know is that can I use any Thunderbolt 3 card on the market and just drop it in my machine and set it up? Also, is Thunderbolt 3 backwards compatible with other previous versions of Thunderbolt? One last question here. When installing the card do I have to (or need to for best performance) need to use the PCI-E slot with lanes connected directly to the CPU? My board has a 16x slot that is wired for 4x driven off the chipset from what I can tell by the flow charts in my manual.

Hello everyone, I plan to buy a MacBook (please don’t judge the brand, I just prefer macOS for everything except gaming) and I am therefore looking for a USB-c Dongle/hub. I want at least one type A port, as well as one HDMI port. Ethernet and USB-c Pass through are a plus, but not needed. My problem is that I am not able to find a dongle that supports 4K (or even 1440p) they all support max 30Hz, or 1080@60. Is it a limitation of USB 3.1 gen 1? or just cheap brands? And I know the thunderbolt 3 docks supports everything I want and more, but they all cost about 300€ and/or require external power
