  1. Do Thunderbolt 3/4 docks work on ASUS ZenBook 14 UN5401QA? This laptop doesn't have Thunderbolt ports, and only USB-C 3.2 Gen 2.
  2. I have an HP Spectre x360 15 (2019) and i'm thinking on getting a Thunderbolt 3 Dock, but the Laptop doesn't work with any USB C Monitorhups i tried so... Does anyone has experience with this particular Laptop and a working Dock? Thanks
  3. these docks are really cheap on eBay, I googled around and most of the questions are people asking if it worked for older USB ports. The dell documentation doesn't really say much about it either. theoretically it's just thunderbolt 3 so I guess there wouldn't be any real reason it wouldn't work....
  4. Budget (including currency): 1000€ Country: Austria Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Photo-work, video rendering, games Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I'd like to do the whole PC is in a different room to get away from heat and noise thing, because with homeoffice hours and gaming sessions afterwards the room regularly turns into a sauna. I'm going to go for the GIGABYTE GC-Titan Ridge 2.0 AIC fitting to my X570 Aorus Master and the Corning Optical Thunderbolt cable. So far so clear. The real question now is: Is there any TB3 dock that supports 5120x1440 at higher than 60 hz (ideally 120-144hz)? I've looked around for a bit and so far found nothing definitve. Help much appreciated.
  5. Hey guys! I recently built my first pc, cracked it out. 3070ti GPU, with a Ryzen 5950x CPU, 2x16gb of ram, etc. I am a music producer and a gamer, so I need this computer to have Thunderbolt 3 capabilities otherwise I can't do my job. Been trying for weeks now how to get this Titan Ridge 2.0 Thunderbolt 3 option card working with my Aorus x570 Ultra motherboard, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. I called Gigabyte, and they said there should be no problems. I installed and uninstalled the drivers, I tried other PCIe slots besides the x4 slot (it's supposed to go in the x4 slot), I tried taking out all of my other cards in the PCIe slots, I tried updating the bios to the newest version of 35b (which actually got rid of the only thunderbolt option I saw in the bios before on F32). Seems like nothing is working. Please let me know if you can help out! Thanks!!
  6. Impact 15 Meters of Thunderbolt 3 fiber optics, a 4U chassis and high airflow cooling. Day 1 Noctua hardware has arrived Day 2 Custom front panel for Silverstone RM42 (made by a good friend of mine! Thanks Lukas!) Day 3 Custom front panel for Silverstone RM42 is finished, almost... (need to do a few adjustements with the Dremel) Day 4 Finished the front panel and mounted the Noctua fans Day 5 Bought some rails Day 6 The build is "finished"
  7. Hey there! I've just completed my new rig (intended for work and ... gaming) -- for my work I use Apple's Thunderbolt 27" Displays since years and I'm still very happy with them. To keep them I decided to go with the Gigabyte Vision D, which offers two certified Thunderbolt 3 ports. A few hours ago I tried to power everything up, but the displays won't turn on (they work fine when powered by my old macbook). The setup: DP1.4 from GPU to MB (DP In), TB 3 - TB 2 Apple Dongle from MB USB-C(TB3) to TB 2 Display. What I've tried: BIOS, Chipset, Thunderbolt drivers are all up to date. The cables are plugged in (redid everything multiple times). Started the system with plugged in monitors, booted without monitors and plugged them in later. Still no luck. I've changed the BIOS settings for the thunderbolt connection to no security, disabled/enabled it, ... The Thunderbolt Software shows no devices. Does anyone know any possible solution? :[ Thanks for any effort! I'm really frustrated at this point. Specs: Win 10 64 Gigabyte B550 Vision D AMD Ryzen 9 5900x RTX 3080 FE (PCIE 3 x16 Riser) 4* 16 GB Trident Z 3600 B-Die Corsair AX1000 Plat Boot: M.2 1TB Samsung 970 SSD: 2TB Samsung 860
  8. Hi guys! At work my boss runs an acer notebook, I'm not quite sure on the full spec but it's not exactly a powerhouse! He wants to run 2 displays off of it but only has 1 HDMI output. I suggested getting a thunderbolt dock and running 2 displays off of that. My first question is would it have a massive effect on performance? (laptop is only really used for excel and such) would it also be able to extend them as 2 seperate displays or would it just mirror them? Any responses I get are really appreciated and I hope this hasn't already been asked!
  9. I want to purchase a dock for the Razer Blade 15 (Early 2020 Advanced Model). I have tried the DELL WD19TB, only to find that the USB and ethernet wouldn't work. I tried all the drivers, even a firmware update but the PC wouldn't detect the dock to start the firmware update - even on an XPS. Having spoken to a DELL engineer whilst at work, it seems like DELL Docks (especially thunderbolt) are definitely not high up on the reliability scale - this does make sense given the amount of DELL dock issues we have had to deal with at work. I'm returning the Dell WD19TB today, and am thinking about the Lenovo 40AN0135EU - THINKPAD THUNDERBOLT 3 DOCK GEN 2 as a next attempt - we have used lenovo docks at work before and I can't think of anyone having issues with them before (granted we have never used the dock with a Razer Blade). Can someone let me know if they have tried/used this with the Razer before, and what levels of success you got with it? Before anyone asks, yes I have done the classic amazon search for "thunderbolt dock", but it seems that all the generic docks (from Elgato, Belkin, Startech, CalDigit, etc.) all either do not have sufficient display ports (I need at least 2 full size displayport ports) or do not supply sufficient power, I'm looking for at least 130W (I know that's not the full 230W that can be used to charge the Razer, but should be enough to stop it discharging when the laptop is in normal use) - trickle-charging is not a problem for me, as I will be having the laptop "docked" for 8+ hours at a time. The Razer Blade 15 Early 2020 Advanced laptop does support USB-C charging - it worked with the DELL WD19TB, and it works with my ~85W Macbook Pro charger, so that's not a worry for me. I wish that Razer would just make a TB3 dock, they're really good with build quality and I have no doubt that it would be a high class "top notch" dock. It would probably get them a lot of money too, manufacturing a device to turn a gaming laptop into a fully-fledged gaming desktop setup with a single cable. First time using this forum, make me proud fellow IT-ers!
  10. So I want to set up my PC out of the room like Linus does. I've seen his 1800 dollar fiber optic hubs but also saw him take the CalDigit TS4 home with him so what does he use that for? Wouldn't it just be way cheaper to run a thunderbolt 4 cable through the walls and get a Thunderbolt dock rather than the whole fiber optic system. What are the benefits to fiber?
  11. Overall rating for this dock: 3/5 I bought this Dock for my 2019 16" MacBook Pro. The main concern I had going is was knowing if this dock was capable of running 2 external displays and charging my laptop that came with a 96W charger at only 65W. The answer is yes. But be warned, a few things I did not expect is that this dock is very loud and a 16" MacBook Pro can consume a lot of power under load. Let's discuss. To get 2 displays off this dock all your displays must be DisplayPort. I connected my main display over native DisplayPort and my other display off a Type C to DisplayPort cable. This setup works and I can set both displays to their native 1440p resolution and144Hz refresh rate. I tried to use a Type C to HDMI cable and that did not work, the Thunderbolt spec will only do DisplayPort natively, so you must use a Type C to DisplayPort Cable. Don't try to use any Type C to HDMI/USB hubs or DP to HDMI/C to HDMI cables off the rear thunderbolt port, they won't work. Also note, a 20Gbps Thunderbolt 3 cable, often found in 1m cable sizes, cannot drive 2 displays, you must use a 40Gbps cable and the included one is only 0.5m. As for charging, this dock will charge my 2019 16" MacBook Pro, but it does so only at 65W which is slow and is 31W less than my MacBook Pro wants to charge with. The important thing is that the MacBook is not having to use battery power to supplement insufficient wall power, granted this may occur if you're using the CPU and GPU together in a demanding workload, but I don't think the concern is very high. As long as you power your other accessories off the dock, and not your laptop, you should have no issues with charging and the longevity of your laptops battery. (Note: on further testing, running a Parallels Windows 10 VM can cause my MacBook to use battery for supplemental power. I recommend using your laptops included charger for demanding workloads.) Now for the noise, this dock is equipped with a blower fan, something I've not heard of with other docks. This makes perfect sense though since this dock can house 2x M.2 drives. Those drives, plus all the power delivery, and controllers means that this dock will get warm if you start to push it. I attempted to cover up the intake and exhaust vents on this dock with tape, which removed the "whooshing" of the fan but left the high pitch whine of the fan motor spinning. Pick your poison, but I think leaving it the way it is is a more pleasing sound than just high pitch whining. This fan is why I give this dock 3/5 starts. I suggest turning on the AC, wearing headphones, or playing some music over your laptops speakers. At half volume, my MacBook Pros speakers fully drown out the fan noise. I recommend unplugging this dock when not in use to save your sanity. Overall, this is a powerful dock for the price (I got it on Amazon for ~$230). The loud fan puts a real damper on what would otherwise be one of the best docks on the market. I would recommend it for the price if you accept that you're gonna have to unplug it while not using it and that while working you're gonna want some headphones or music to drown out the sound. I hope this review was helpful, its hard to find comprehensive information on this dock online so I figured I'd buy it and provide it.
  12. Hi everyone, I was thinking about buying a Thunderbolt 3 dock for my home setup, a few month month ago I bought myself an Acer Conceptd7 laptop which has a TB3 port. I have seen the elgato one but it's very pricey, the main use would be using just 1 cable to connect monitor and keyboard/mouse to play on my external monitor and have everything organized with less cable possible hanging around. I'm also worried if a dock would increase substantially the input lag with keyboard and mice. Living in Europe, so cannot buy anything from US/Canada Thank y'all!
  13. Hey, Recently purchased a new monitor (CJ79 Ultra wide) mainly for it's Thunderbolt 3 input. Why, you ask? Because I'm a developer and occasionally use a MacBook Pro and I like a nice clean desk; and it's a nice compromise that I can still game on. The problem: I have one bluetooth set of peripherals (again... no wires... nice clean desk) for use with the MacBook and I have another set for my Windows gaming rig. I'm fed up of switching them and it's untidy. I'm trying to come up with a decent solution to the problem and failing miserably; closest I've got is multi-paired bluetooth peripherals, but that's still annoying and I can only get my hands on some pretty mediocre logitech ones that are even any good. I thought about using a KVM but only really found one; and that didn't support full 85W charging, and it definitely was not cheap. To be honest the KVM option probably wouldnt be a bad idea if I could find one because then the monitor could act as a USB hub for my perhipherals and I could get standard ones. Perhaps I'm being a little OCD, but does anyone know of a decent Thunderbolt 3 KVM or a different solution that might satisfy my unrational behaviour? :)
  14. So this is a bit of an idea I had recently... Potentially even an idea for exploration in an LTT video! I've been thinking about how it would be possible to outfit the HTC Vive (the headset I have) with USB-C instead of the included cable. Prologue: I had an opportunity a while ago to try out one of those wireless VR gaming backpack things in a store once that turns the Vive (I think it was the Vive version if I recall) into a wireless headset, and honestly... I could feel the lag vs a cable, it's just not the same. I just don't think the tech is there yet, even as impressive as all the fancy 5G or WiGig tech is... it's still not good enough. So since I'm going to be sticking to cables for now, I was trying to think of ways to take that bulky tri-cable setup and turn it into a single USB-C cable, coming straight from the headset, that goes straight intro the PC. VirtualLink is basically the failed attempt at a standard that is the reason NVIDIA puts USB-C connectors on their GPUs. It's a cool name but technically not the same thing as USB-C, it's an alt-mode. I believe the only difference to DisplayPort alt-mode is that it provides 2 DP lanes and a USB 3.2 lane instead of 1 DP lane and a USB 3.1 lane. (Though I might be wrong on the numbers there as there's conflicting info and even Wikipedia seems a little confused tbh) Point is, there's liely barely any practical performance difference between them (5Gbps vs 10 for the USB, basically irrelevant, speed does not equal latency and only the latter matters much to VR sensors), so there's no real reason to stress out about not using purpose-built USB-C based adapters. And VirtualLink-compatible hardware is practically non-existent because it's basically a failed standard. So with that out of the way, the problem we need to solve is carrying the USB 3, HDMI, and power for the headset all through a single cable. The first two are easy enough... It's the third that gets tricky. You might recall this adapter by Accell that made the headlines a little while ago, meant for adapting an Oculus Rift to using USB-C. But it only carries USB and HDMI, no power... Fine for the Rift since it can be powered by USB, but with the Vive, that barrel plug is required! The HTC Vive is powered via it's Link Box by 12VDC at 2A... Though it will work basically fine off 1A from my own testing with a bench supply. Interestingly, it also seems to work fine at 9V 2A. Additionally, a surprising fact is that the Link Box is completely optional and unnecessary! The only requirement for using the Vive without the Link Box is that your PC has Bluetooth built-in, and that you can find a female barrel jack to sacrifice that happens to be the right size! (Btw, I've actually noticed slightly better performance without the Link Box in some cases, looks like the radios in it take up some of that precious bandwidth, lol) Anyhow, that 12V power requirement is probably good news as that's a standard voltage for USB PD! So if the GPU's output port, or the USB-C port of a gaming laptop as another example, can supply 12V via USB PD then theoretically, this should be able to work. However, I have no clue if that's the case. For example the new laptop I've got (well, purchased, but it hasn't come in yet as it's a special order) lists the max wattage of the Thunderbolt 3 ports and claims to support USB PD (though doesn't say if that's for input only or both ways), but doesn't mention supported voltages anywhere. It can supply up to 15W, which would be 5V 3A or 12V 1.25A. Of course, the next problem is what to do at the other end of the cable, the headset end. That's where a USB-C hub comes in! These are easy enough to find on the cheap, and any should do as long as it's got an HDMI port and USB 3.0. Here's one for $25 for example: https://amazon.com/dp/B07QXMNF1X I have one for example with 3 USB 3.0 ports and one 4K/60Hz HDMI. I like it because it doesn't have any of that useless bloat like a bunch of 2.0 ports and a multi-card reader. Just the essentials so it's nice and compact. That said I haven't tested to ensure that it works with my headset, but I can confirm that (besides working with a phone which is what I bought it for) it works with a desktop through the USB-C port on the GPU. You can connect a display, USB 3.0 devices, and USB 2.0 devices, all at once, without a hitch. Of course that still doesn't solve our power delivery issue... For that I think the solution might be one of these! That's a USB-C PD trigger, it simply tricks the USB-C device it's connected to into supplying the correct output voltage you want... assuming that device is capable of outputting said voltage. If we set it to 12V, then connecting it to the headset should allow a 12V supply over a single cable! The only thing to watch out for would be that the hub you're using provides a USB Type-C passthrough port compatible with USB PD (up to 100W of passthrough power). That should allow the higher voltage to pass through the cable while the lower-voltage 5V is simultaneously supplied to power the hub's own USB ports! Yup that's right, two voltages at once. It really works. Isn't USB-C freakin' amazing? And that brings us to the final problem... Err, well... where the heck to find such a long USB-C cable! That I don't know, but I'm sure you could find one if you looked hard enough. Alright so I know this is a long post but I'd love thoughts on this, not so much a question but I'm hoping to incite a discussion about um... odd VR and USB-C things.
  15. I am getting parts together to build a new gaming/streaming rig when AMD 4000 comes out. The case that I'm looking at says that it has a front USB Type C connector that I want to use, but it doesn't specify if it's Gen.1 or Gen.2. If I plug it into the Thunderbolt header on my MOBO will it give me Thunderbolt 3 speed, or should I find a case that I know has a Gen.2 plug?
  16. I have an unusual set up, 2018 Razer Blade along with a 2080ti in an external gpu, I don't quite under the power loss from my GPU being connected through thunderbolt 3. And I also don't understand how my 1070 is capable of running a monitor while I have my 2080ti connected. Are there any bottle necks, or hazards along with running this set up? Also general advice for optimizing my set up (not building an actual desktop) 2080ti is running a 60 fps tv, and a 240hz monitor. 1070 is running a 60fps monitor. All monitors are 1080p. I play: Starcraft, Age of Empires, and Fortnite. *Where is the bottleneck and why: CPU, GPU, Thunderbolt 3 *How can I optimize this set up to the best gaming standards? Ie: upgrade laptop to the new 2020 razer blade with the 10th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-10750H 6-Core (2.6GHz / 5.0GHz) or downgrade my gpu to something more realistic. *Am I going to break something?
  17. Hi i'd like to know if this one is compatible or are there better/cheaper ones. All i need are at least 2 Video outputs and a couple of USB ports and a ethernet jack would be nice.
  18. so i watched all the ltt videos on thunderbolt 3 and type c and was wondering if thunderbolt is vastly superior to normal type c besides faster data transfer and displayport connectivity,is power delivery better? what if i had a type c device? would it benefit from charging off a thunderbolt cable? p.s. i don't have a phone that charges off type c i have an iphone 6s plus. I'm just curious.
  19. Hey all, I made a post about this a little while ago under displays, but I figured TB3 was more of a laptop thing rather than a display thing. With TB3 becoming more common on laptops due to apples push, the Razer Blade Stealth (RBS), which Linus had reviewed a little while ago has ONE Thunderbolt 3 Port. I have been wanting to run displayport off of the RBS. This may seem straight forward until you realize you can't charge while using the laptop for DP unless you find some kind of TB3 to DP adapter which also comes with a method of charging the laptop (power throughput). I was curious as if anyone knew of one of these adapters as I am unable to find one myself. Thanks, --Mince
  20. About 2 weeks ago i got my hands on the Powercolor Devil Box that I had been for so long saving for. My brother for Christmas had bought me a Nitro Sapphire 380x Gaming Series card for whatever egpu i was going to get. Once I had got this my brother put the card in and it didn't work right away and I do not know what he did to get it working cause i was on the John but he got it working some how, and all was fine or so we thought DUN DUN DUNNNN... It worked that night flawlessly and same with the beginning of the next morning then while I was playing a game ((Heroes and Generals) - Great game btw) the game randomly closed and on the bottom right of my screen it said this device may not work properly with the thunderbolt logo on the message I relaunched it only to find my game running at awful fps around the same fps the game ran at before I had the gpu. I got my brother he went into afterburner and it showed no gpu was connected to my laptop I do not know what he did after that cause he was reeeeaaaaalllly pissed so I booked it out of there he concluded it must have been something with the Thunderbolt sorftware and that there should be a patch/ additional software for it in the mean time I have not seen any software/patches yet and every time I turn on my computer it still gives me the message with the thunderbolt logo except this time it had a different message because after the gpu stopped working we reinstalled the drivers for the Thunderbolt 3 stuff any input/guidance is appreciated I am rocking a Dell Xps 13 9350
  21. Hi All, Does anyone know where I can find the Razer Core available to buy in the UK?
  22. Hi Everyone, So, I've done some research and was hoping someone could clarify this for me; There are a number of z170/z270 Motherboards with an USB-c/Thunderbolt 3 connector. (e.g. Asus z170 premium, Gigabyte Z170x-ultra Gaming). The Asus z170 premium for example has no 'display port in' connection, the z170x-ultra has a DP-in connection on I/O. Does this mean that I can not use a TB3 motherboard to send a video signal from a graphics card in a pci-e slot, unless it has some sort of 'injection' into the motherboard. (Like the Asus THunderboltEX2 cards on some older ASUS boards do for example). I was hoping to build a TIny ITX pc with a ASRock Z270 ITX motherboard, which has thunderbolt 3, but since this board has no DP-in connector, I'm not sure if I can transport the videosignal from my GPU to the monitor I want to use (LG 34UC98, yes I;m aware I need a TB3 to TB2 adapter as well!) Is there anyone who can explain this for me? Has the video injection into the thunderbolt stream, if you will, been updated to something new, eliminating the need for a GPU DP->MB DP-in in newer motherboards? Hopefully someone can shed some light on the sitatuation, because otherwise the TIny-PC connected with 1 wire idea is not possible. Thanks! Pieke
  23. Didn't know if this would qualify as network (but didn't think so). As the title implies, I am looking for a way to get thunderbolt 3 to the other side of my house without paying 800$ for a optical thunderbolt 3 cable.
  24. Recently I had purchased a Razer Blade Stealth which has been my daily driver for school, editing, graphic design for just over 3 months. I do have a gaming PC at home which has been working fantastically for me. I have been looking in to buying a 1440p 144hz monitor that is very specific, and it sees that I have only found one monitor that satisfies everything I need (more about that here). I have determined my best course of action is not to seek a monitor that satisfies everything I need, but rather, to somehow output through displayport from my Razer Blade Stealth. The ports on the Razer Blade Stealth are 1x Thunderbolt 3, 1 x HDMI 2.0, 2x USB 3.0. This has been difficult given I want to still be able to charge my laptop while I am displaying to that monitor. That means I am limited to 2 USB 3.0 and 1 HDMI 2.0 OR finding some kind of adapter for DP through Thunderbolt 3 while still allowing me to charge my laptop. If anyone knows of any way I can run a 1440p 144hz display off of this using displayport, with the specified requirements that would be great.
  25. looking for a perfect laptop with thunderbolt 2, a quad core i7 and 16gb ram. the laptop should be under $1000 because honestly if you can get a gaming laptop with a gtx960m for under $800 why cant we get one with out a gpu and add thunderbolt 3 for less than $800 its not like thunderbolt costs more than a gtx960m to put into a laptop. So does my perfect laptop exist for me. I know that the Blade stealth is an option but it does not have a quad core. Also I don't need a fancy screen with over 1080p rez and 100% adobe RGB. honestly its not like anyone should be doing color work or 4k video work on a laptop with a duel core if they can help it. I liked the razer blade stealth but its lacking a quad core and i like the asus zenbook3 but again lacking a quad core, cant cool the CPU inside it, only one port and no thunderbolt 3. They are both good starts but don't quite make gold in my opinion. is there a laptop out there for me? or is the only option the triple over priced Macbook pro and install windows on it instead of mac OS. I also don't care what size it is
