Good day to all of you. I'm hoping this post leads to a full on video by linus so please show your interest and draw some attention. I have been in the IT industry since 1993. I've seen some amazing growth in power and efficiency of pcs, servers, displays, video game systems, and the list goes on. But one product that amazes me in its continuous push toward irrelevance is the Printer. Its that technology that everyone needs and continues to need but gets shoved in the back corner like a basturd step child. Recently I had the misfortune of having to install and configure a small HP printer. Specifically the HP LaserJet Pro 4001dwe. Full disclosuer, some of this is my own fault for not properly researching the product. That being said let me explain what is happening in the industry - or at least at HP from what myself and several other associates are seeing. Lets take a trip back in time. The year is 1999. I'm currently a part of an IT department at a large printing firm. Responsible for deployment of PCs, printers, monitors, and servers. A pentium II 266 is all the rage with windows 98. Printer manufacturer of choice was HP LaserJets and Epson dot matrix (long live three part forms!). I could deploy a new HP Laserjet 4050tn in about 3 - 5 minutes with 2 minutes of that being the unboxing time. Steps required: 1. Unbox 2. Pull protective shipping seal from fresh laser cartridge and insert into printer. 3. Powerup Printer 4. Set IP address 5. Setup printer share in windows NT 4 or Novell 3.12 6. Done That was it. Simple and elegant. Those printers were repairable and built like a tank. Ran for years usually needing nothing more than pickup rollers and an occasional fuser. Almost every HP printer regardless of size had these same simple steps. Printing in 5 -10 minutes after opening the box. Fast forward to today. I purchased the HP LaserJet Pro 4001dwe as a small desktop printer for check printing in an accounting clerks office. Here are the steps to get this top of the line - nearly 25 years newer technology working. 1. Unbox 2. Install next to PC on Desk 3. Connect USB Cable as there is only 1 network line in this old office that is connected tot he PC 4. Install software. Failed because I didn't read the manual and know that the printer needed its own network connection in order to function. 5. Steel network cable from PC to Printer. Power up printer. Wait 45 minutes for printer to download and install firmware updates on printer. WTF!!! PCL 6 has been around and working flawlessly for 25 years!! Why doesn't this just work. 6. Put in small switch so I can connect the PC as well as the printer as the printer will not work unless it is connected to the internet 7. Finish setting up the Printer on the pc 8. Required creating an account at HP so they can sell me over prices cartridges of toner for the rest of the short 2 year anticipated life of these piece of crap landfill filling printers. (15-20 more minutes) I have never nor would I have ever dreamed that a printer would require the internet to setup its basic printing functionality. In the push to secure as much money as possible from its customers HP has taken the approach of Lock it down so they have no option but to buy from us. Linus just reviewed the xeon processors from intel that are doing the same thing. Pay us again and we will let you use the product at its full potential even though you already payed for the hardware that drives those features. Where is the line in the sand for these subscription service product deployments. There are some products that just need to work without an outstretched hand like oliver saying .... "More Please". Especially when the useful life of the product is 2-3 years. A message needs to be sent to intel, HP, Apple, and any other tech company that these practices are not OK for every product to go to market. Shareholders love this but consumers HATE this. They shouldn't even be legal. If the feature is in the hardware, and I paid for the hardware, why should I pay more to use what I already bought. Its a sunk cost. A printer that I paid for shouldn't be required to go to the internet just so mom and dad can make sure I only put moms cartridge in the printer. Not to mention the added complexity to setup a printer and wasted time. And its marketed as A PRO product. We need to do better with technology products. HP will die as quickly as it grew if these practices don't stop. I for one have switched to brother and will try almost any other brand to avoid the experience that HP is trying to establish as the new norm. Comments and Discussion please!! Linus, please do a comprehensive review on the difference in experience between a 20 year old printer and todays. You can include a comparison in print quality and serviceability as well. Aside from wireless I fail to see where there is any innovation at a company that was a leader.

Hi, So I am looking for help with an auto-renewal issue I got. 2 years ago I got a key / trial (can't really remember the specifics due to it being 2 years ago) for Bitdefender antivirus. I hardly used it because I didn't like the massive system usage it took, and I knew I was careful enough on the internet that it wasn't a necessity for me. Anyways, I just forgot about it. A couple days ago, I got a PayPal notification saying a charge of £54 was authorised, my first immediate thought was has my PayPal been breached; has someone used my account to buy something? When I checked my email I finally found what it was, apparently I signed up for a Bitdefender autorenewal and that has kicked in and charged me. That sucks, I'm normally good with autorenewal traps, if I'm signing up for a software trial or whatever, I usually set a calender reminder for me to cancel the subscription before it charges me, but this one must've slipped through the cracks. Anyways, £54 is a lot of money for me, I'm a student who's really tight for money as it is - so I contacted Bitdefender support to ask for a refund and cancellation on my account. I got a reply in a couple of days time, basically saying all they can offer me is either a longer subscription or 60% partial refund. I don't want either, I just want my money back for a product I wasn't aware I was purchasing. What is my next move guys ? I have attached screenshots of the support email (I haven't replied yet). Do I reply standing my ground saying what offered is not acceptable? Do I threaten their support with going a legal route if the don't comply? Do I contact my bank and try and get a chargeback ? This has never happened to me before and I don't really know where I stand legally, I feel I've been scammed even though I know I must of signed a T&C for this. Why is it so hard for a company to give you money back from a mistake ? I feel like I've been robbed. Anyways, I really appreciate any support you guys give, I'm just super stuck right now and looking for advice. Thank you

Summary On 22nd February, Spotify announced, in it's Stream On event, that it will be expanding it's network to 80 more countries. This includes many countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. With the new launch, customers in those countries will have access to the the full catalog of music and podcasts (with some exceptions depending on the market) and the app will be available on all available platforms like android, ios, smart TVs in those countries. The new markets are: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Bhutan, Botswana, Brunei Darussalam, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Curaçao, Djibouti, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, Fiji, Gabon, Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Kenya, Kiribati, Kyrgyzstan, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lesotho, Liberia, Macau, Madagascar, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Marshall Islands, Mauritania, Mauritius, Micronesia, Mongolia, Mozambique, Namibia, Nauru, Nepal, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa, San Marino, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Togo, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, Uganda, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Quotes My thoughts The launch of Spotify in these regions, is a big deal, both for Spotify and the customers. Being a resident of one of these countries means I can access Spotify content without having to use a vpn, like everyone else in these markets. It also brings some competition to other services like Deezer, which I personally used just because it is available here. I installed the app and checked the premium options. The price for individual, duo and family plans are 27% of the US price and 50% of similar Deezer plans in my country. I am definitely switching to Spotify. Summary (it seems to be US specific) Some people noticed that DELL had an subscription, might have been talked about since the LTT video on buying a prebuilt and their support. DELL shows that they have been auto OPT-IN people on these subscriptions, and they are so far down the page it might go unnoticed with a cluster of information to confuse the consumer of what you are really getting. In DELL's response to GN they stated: My thoughts When you buy something, it should always be clear of what exactly you are buying. This becoming more and more of an issue in tech or always has been bad. From using only marketing buzzwords rather than the physical capabilities or the components you get. Worst is that some consumer wouldn't think of there being a subscription with your PC, and mostly would focus on warranty? So having it in rather omnions places while having doing just enough legal nonsense to cover it up, to me just sounds shady as ****. Also how we shouldn't allow companies to OPT-IN (unless a good reason for it) us in everything they want to sell us or taking advantage of, either it being for marketing, sharing data etc. Like with phones or operative systems getting their fair share of the same "either you get into our system or you are not getting the full use of your device" no matter if their systems are any good to make certain things function. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announces FSD subscription coming in 2021
AvMaverick posted a topic in Tech News
Summary Amidst a series of random tweets from Tesla CEO Elon Musk on Sunday, he has confirmed that a Tesla Autopilot will subscription is on the calendar, sometime in Early 2021. This is one of the many things you could once buy moving to a subscription package now. This comes after he announced that FSD will be going up by $2K this monday. Quotes My thoughts This is clearly happening, and there is no workaround. This is one influential step Tesla is taking that makes the vehicle industry more service-based rather than a one-time buy. @LinusTech's prediction on items that we buy soon becoming a service is happening. As a consumer, I feel this is against consumers and more in line for companies wanting to earn more and more, and I feel it's overall impact on consumer culture will be thoroughly negative. His prediction in the heated seat subscriptions stands right here, and as a 15-year old kid, this is scary for me to plan for financially... Hello, I got my friend his old xbox account from the US. I live in Europe and he had a Xbox 360 with over a year of Live Gold left. I have a pc and I want to upgrade the Live Gold to Game Pass. The only problem is that the region is of the whole account is set to USA and I don't have USA based payment instrument. Is there a way I somehow can convert the whole account to Europe including the Live Gold WITHOUT losing any months or so? If not, then is there a way I can bypass the payment instrument? I have 15 dollars as my balance. Thanks in advance!

Well it has happened. BMW just launched the subscription based service for various "optional extras" including heated steering wheel, seats, Driving Assistant Plus and Adaptive M Suspension in the UK. Sadly I can see this being a norm I mean at what point do you actually own the vehicle if manufactures can lock hardware based options behind a paywall? What if house builders did this, buy a house but you have to pay a subscription to use the bathroom or kitchen then the front door. I get locking software based options behind a paywall and you could argue that software in active development costs money but charging £15 for heated seat and then an extra 10 for the steering wheel is quite frankly ludicrous, its a damn wire that heats up and its present in the car its not costing BMW extra its probably saving them money as they don't have to manufacture ones with and without, any who I don't know how to finish this other than BMW just lost my business. Time to say hi to Ford I guess,.

Summary BMW to allow subscriptions for in car features, just like Linus predicted. Like heated seats and steering wheels in uk for £15 and £10 per month. Quotes My thoughts This would make cars heavy and less efficient for no reason if you don't want or need these features. Linus predicted this may become a thing, just like most he thought it would be Tesla who would introduce this but looks like BMW may have beaten them to it. I could see how some may like it on the second hand market letting you add features without the higher cost of having to install the equipment but I think most people are against this. Linus freaking called it BMW is planning to start offering paid subscriptions for features in their cars. "The important takeaway here is that over-the-air updates and features will play a big role in BMW ownership, but more importantly, that users will have to pay for features already installed in their cars, such as heated seats, infotainment features, etc." Looks like cars as a subscription is way closer than anyone previously could have imagined. I bet they don't even drop prices in their cars either considering a base model 3 series starts a around $41000 US and a fully kitted out, non M, comes in at around 54-55k... I figure the lack of having to pay for upgrades up front would make them cheaper because of the subscription fee but I still wouldn't be surprised to see the price right around the 49-51k mark which is pretty ridiculous if you're not interested in paying for all that extra crap. Hello guys. Just a quick question. I used my PayPal to pay for a friend's monthly subscription for WoW Arena in battle.net It was like 12.99 or somehting. My question is simple. Will battle.net draw 12.99 every month from my card or what? It had no option for an one month payment. And if so, can I cancel it via PayPal? Disclaimer: I have no idea about battle.net and how it works.

Hi, I wanted to use the bell thingy to tell youtube that when I subscribe to the channel, I want to subscribe to the channel, but the best I can do is just get the list of subscriptions and click it one by one, which is really frustrating, since I have to click, wait for dialog box to open, click some more, wait for dialog box to close and repeat. So, my question is simple, is there a way to do this for all the channels? Thanks

Does anyone have this issues where you go to the subscription tab on YouTube and all you get is a blank page saying: "Your subscriptions haven’t uploaded any videos yet. Try finding another channel to subscribe to." ? Why is YouTube so bloody broken?

Hi all! I've stumbled upon a very weird glitch on Floatplane (at least, I hope it's a glitch!). And before anyone asks, yes I've contacted Floatplane support and am still waiting for a reply. I recently saw on Floatplane that there was a 4th creator added called “Potet”. I was curious and decided to view it. Not knowing that there wasn’t any further verification before subscribing, I pressed “purchase” and it automatically subscribed me. Thinking this wasn’t a big deal, I went and cancelled my subscription right away. However, my problem is that my credit card statement now says I have a pending transaction for $2051.84 CAD! I’ve attached 3 screenshots. The 1st being my cancelled subscription on floatplane, the 2nd being the invoice for this “Potet” channel in USD, and the 3rd being my Tangerine pending transaction. Out of curiosity, is everyone else able to see this "Potet" creator, and has anyone else accidentally subscribed to it and got a huge transaction on their credit card!? Hopefully Luke and the team can get this fixed soon so nobody else has to have a large transaction on their card! Thanks!

The video RTX 3090 8K Gaming - FIRST in the WORLD, has actually made me loose trust in your productions, I am just a random guy in the internet so you won´t care, why should you? You already have the sponsors, people from this forum hopefully know better than just to believe "8k gamming is real". It saddens me to say I will no longer be a subscriber and when family or friends ask for advice you guys will no longer be an option within my recommendations. Well, this sucks...

I have just received a newsletter in my inbox from IFTTT promoting their new "Pro" plan which now features some long-waited functions such as multiple triggers and actions and the ability to write your own JavaScript code to filter data and based on the result cancel the action. The drawbacks, if don't get the Pro version you will only get to create 3 "personal" applets. It's unclear what is going to happen to the applets you have already made. I'm now trialing the Pro version for 2 USD a month, you can set your own price for the first year and 2 USD was the least amount, so I only gave them 2 USD, because I'm that cheap. I'm wondering what you guys think about these changes.

What does this mean and should I be worried? This article on The Verge by Tom Warren @tomwarren >>>Microsoft is ready for a world beyond Windows As a Windows10 Pro user I feel like this means they are going to be outsourcing local features of Windows one by one to web-based Apps.

I have no idea, who to contact/where to contact over this matter. But I figured this is the right sub forum for this. But when I logged in today (5 minutes ago) my Floatplane sub which I subscribed to on the forums well over a year ago now has vanished, which is weird because it just got renewed last week & it's also been removed from the floatplane website when I sign in under my forum account. I don't know if others have had this issue, it's annoying & I get that teething issues are a thing & all that. So any help would be appreciated.

I signed up for Floatplane Club on the 15th of October, and cancelled it before it renewed the following month. Strangely, I can still access the Floatplane subforum and watch the videos, as well as participate in the Floatplane Pilot areas of the Discord server. I'll try the resync fix and then update my post if that fixes it.

One of my worries back when Windows 10 was called "Windows as a service" was a monthly fee. Today, this becomes a partial reality. Microsoft has just announced a new edition of Windows 10 called "Windows 10 Enterprise E3". It is aimed at enterprise customers and is optional (at least for now). It will cost 7 dollars a month, per user. That means that it would take a business 28 months before the subscription model becomes more expensive than buying the ~200 dollar license outright. That might be an appealing offer to some businesses. Do you think Microsoft will move towards this for the consumer versions as well? With the rumors of Windows 10 being the "last" OS, it would make sense to have users pay as they go, instead of a one time fee which will last them forever*. This is not related to the ongoing free upgrade to Windows 10. This is a separate Windows 10 edition. Source: PC World and Windows Blog
