Hello all, I've been a PC gamer for little over 12 years now, always on a budget since where I live the price of electronics are absurdly high and I never wanted to burden my parents with expensive stuff. So my PC never had any RGBs or any really expensive parts, only the necessary. That includes SSDs, recently I had the opportunity to get a used SSD in exchange for an LCD monitor I had laying around my house for two years (unused since I got it, basically brand new). The SSD was 100% healthy according to CrystalDiskInfo, it's a SanDisk PLUS 120Gb (dram-less, but I don't think it's such a big issue coming from HDDland), and had little over 2TB TBW(?) out of 40TB. So I get to my house after exchanging it and it shows as "removable disk" when Windows boots. Tried formatting and still not showing as a usable disk, I'm basically going to use this guy as a boot drive for my laptop, so I won't be writing a lot of stuff to it. I'm going to buy another one for my PC later on, but it needs to be bigger since I'll use it to play games. I got all my parts used a couple of years back, so I know the risks of used stuff, my PC has an i5 2500K, 12Gb DDR3 and a GTX970. It still kicks ass in 1080p and that's enough for me. I've never had any real issues with used parts, my laptop and phone are also used goods, my laptop was the most recent purchase and it was real cheap compared to others with same specs. So I just want to upgrade it with an SSD for bigger convenience. I'll have the SSD as boot and a 500Gb HDD for storage (this one is even 7200 RPM, which was a surprise for me, all my other laptops had 5400 RPM HDDs). Ops, forgot the punchline. Has anyone had this issue before? I tested the SSD on the guy's PC and it worked fine then. But now my Windows recognizes it as a 111Gb drive but simply can't use it. Maybe it's because my hardware is older? Or maybe not because I tested it on my newer laptop and still not working. Edit 1: Ok so I'm not sure WTF is going on. I even checked the PCB for any physical damage, and nothing, it looks brand new. When I run Disk Management it showed the ssd with three healthy partitions and one of them being RAW (I couldn't do anything with these partitions) I tried to format them via Gparted, Diskpart and Disk Management Tool; none had any success. I was trying to download SanDisk Dashboard but was not successful until I found an older version and managed to install it and update to the most recent. When this happened It scanned and showed the SSD with 98% health and the partitions that DskMgmt showed before... I managed to clean it with the "Sanitize" option, it now shows 111Gb unallocated, but nothing can be done with the drive. I can't create partitions or format it to NTFS via DiskPart or anything. Gparted gives me "fsyncing/closing /dev/sdc input/output error" when I try to create a GPT partition table or format the partitions that were there and DiskPart gives me "Cyclic Redundancy Check". A few moments ago I rebooted and the Dashboard App shows the ATA security as "Frozen". Is there any way for me to maybe flash an older firmware or the same firmware to make sure it's not a firmware problem? As follows, these first screenshots were taken before I managed to sanitize and erase the disks partitions: The three partitions on DskMgmt Diskpart showing all partitions and the main RAW part. Now after sanitizing: Dashboard showing it as 98% healthy, without any partitions and "Frozen" ATA security. CrystalDiskInfo stats, I had forgotten to upload the first screenshot, so I took another one after sanitizing. If anyone has any idea as to what to do with this little guy... I saw 4 chips on the PCB (2 on each side) and one SanDisk controller, I also saw some contact pads, maybe there's a way to manually "reset" the controller or something. I'm no electronics expert and as my experience with SSDs have been null and void so far, I'm not sure if this is a possibility, like the little pads in smartphones that you can use to enter a recovery mode or something of the sort... Anyways, kudos to whoever helps me out on this! I'll keep on digging by myself here. But there's a limited amount of info you can find with a limited amount of knowledge on something. Edit2: Ok so I came to a conclusion. This SSD has been bricked so hard that all of his blocks are bad. I'm running a Erase Test on HDDScan and it's reporting bad blocks since the first one and it's been over 25k of bad blocks. I'll finish the test but I'm not really sure if it'll turn up anything different. Anyhow, I contacted some local stores about SSDs and I'll be getting a 480Gb Kingston for an affordable price. But I still need to save up 3x what I have now.

Hello everyone! I'm looking for a relatively cheap SSD to upgrade a laptop with. I'm from Argentina, so I don't have many options really. I don't want DRAMless, so my choice boils down to the Kingston KC600 256gb at $55, or the KC600 512gb at $87. Is there any noticeable improvement in performance and/or durability in the 512 model? Or the ONLY reason would be more storage? Any insight on the matter will be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot!

Browsed for a bit on the forum but wasn't coming across any answers, so the question is... I've got a new PC, and my old ssd from my 3yr old PC is where I have all my game files and saves. The operating system for it though is Windows 10 Pro, the new PC is Windows 10 Home. Will there be an issue if I plug that ssd into the new PC? Hopefully that explains the question, but if more details are needed let me know. Thanks for the help

These SSDs are marketed for the data center, but that won't stop some people from trying to get one for their desktops! Kingston promises up to 1.1 Million read IOPS (with up to 200K Write IOPS), a 5-year warranty, power failure data protection, and insane Read/Write speeds, hoping to saturate the 8 PCIe lanes it utilizes. I'm hoping this is not a duplicate post, but I did not see any references to this drive on the LTT forums with a couple searches, so yeah, I'm posting about it (https://www.kingston.com/us/ssd/system-builder/DCP1000) Personally, I do not see the benefit of these better drives until SATA III SSDs really do present bottlenecks for gaming and other high-end projects - unless you transfer large single files, you're good to go with SATA for the time being.

I was looking at SSDs on Newegg and frankly, it's so hard to figure out what models to go with. The customer reviews are so bad and vary between great reviews to bad reviews. Some people said that the 850 EVO didn't last a month or less. Some people said that Crucial lasted for years, other said that SK Hynix wasn't that great. Or that the level wearing wasn't great on all brands. SO WHO IS THE BEST? Are all SSDs bad?? Why is the SSD market so full of bad reviews when SSDs are hyped so much? My Dell E5450 has an SK Hynix and runs well, but seriously it makes me worry. It also doesn't seem to matter which size I get, the reviews are still either questionable. Can someone please tell me which of these brands are ALWAYS rate the best and have a low failure rate? I want to get a 1TB SSD for my workstation but 1. their almost 300 a piece, and 2 the reviews are worrisome and confusing.

Hey guys, a friend of mine recently purchased 2 Nvme SSDS 256gb each from used machines for cheap (40$ each), both work, and are detected properly in the bios, i also went up and Set upt the Raid volumen for a total of the 512gb, but when i went to install windows, they were listed as sperate volumens, as i go back to the BIOS, the Raid option is not there anymore ._.

I'm attempting to buy a 240gb ssd in the UK but there are no brands I know with anywhere near the prices they had a year ago, I had thought then that I could snag a cheap 240gb ssd for the same price as a 120gb ssd cost then, wtf is going on? And when will prices go back down? I had thought this must have been due to brexit as the difference in currency value from the silicon valley to where I live i.e. the dollar to pound exchange rate almost compensated for the increase in price from last year, but it seems that a) the 120gb ssds havnt gone up by nearly as much and neither have the around 500gb ssds, and b) other components like hdds and cpus have stayed at around the same price as last year? although also going up slightly. Is 240gb just becoming the new 120gb, and the marketeers are just taking advantage of even reviewers natural reflexes that say prices will go down year on year??? And most importantly does this mean I'll have to buy 240gb of extra storage I dont need to feel that I'm getting a near on par deal with a year ago??? What are your thoughts/ any ideas on how to get my hands on an upgrade to my sata 2 hdd?

I had a strange issue happen with my boot SSD (Crucial M4) and I've tried everything I can think of with no solution. I had a perfectly working set up for the last 5 years with not a single issue. Recently, a friend of mine built his PC but had a DOA GPU which we discovered after we installed his GPU (RX480) into my PC for testing (for the testing, all I installed was AMD Radeon 17.6.2 and Unigine Valley). When I came to turn my PC on a couple hours later, I came to discover that my computer no longer recognises my SSD (even at a bios level). The strange issue is that when I plug my SSD into another computer (also in AHCI mode), I am able to read all the data and even boot the install of windows on that drive. In addition, CrystalDisk said it was at 92% health. I have tried every SATA port/cable combination I have as well as power in put for the drive, but this has not changed the result (the port/cable combinations were tried on other HDD's in my system and they worked without issue). I have tried both IDE and AHCI modes as well as flashed my motherboard to the manufacturer's latest BIOS drivers. I have also attempted to rebuild the boot partition in my SSD using command prompts, but this has not resulted in any progress. For note, I have flashed my Crucial M4 to v070H. I am all out of ideas as to what the issue is or how to fix it. Any suggestions? System: - Asrock Extreme3 Gen 3 - Intel i7-2600k - GTX 560 - Corsair 8gb DDR3 - Crucial M4 128GB - WD 2tb Red - WD 2tb Black - Corsair 600W

Ok so we've probably all seen that PCIE>SATA SSDs>RAID HDDs>HDDs but why the heck can't I find real world comparisons between premium SATA SSDs like a samsung 850 pro and console class SATA SSDs??? Also on the few benchmarks I have actually seen that comparing SATA SSDs it been between very high specced ssds which means heck all to me especially when console class ssds don't even have iops specified. In short: CAN FREAKING ANYONE FIND ME A CHEAP SATA SSD WITH 240GB OF STORAGE THAT WILL PERFORM THE SAME AS A BX300 OR SANDISK PLUS?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I really don't get the concept!! Somebody please clarify.

And I've got a question. Why aren't SSDs not the size of HDDs? Theoraticly, the bigger the size, the higher the capacity. Right? Or maybe do generate heat (I know.. every component does). Or does it degrade performance? I really don't know!

I recently got a 240 GB SSD for my PC, and I wanted to put my steam library on it which I did successfully, but I wanted to know apart from faster boot times, what advantage would I get from putting my OS on there, and if there was an advantage how would I go about moving my OS

I am building a gaming pc and I have been wonder if I should do one small boot SSD with a 4 or 5 more in RAID 0 or just go with the new Samsung 960 Pro at 512GB and just use my NAS for everything else. Does the RAID 0 setup offer anything better and one BA SSD as far as speed? Please help I always set Linus and the team automatically had a bank of SSDs in all their high end gaming build why?

Hi guys, how are you? By the way, I think this topic is usual already, but I'm still curious and a little blind on which is better between standard SSD and the M.2 one? I plan on buying the 250GB storage, but got confused between the M.2 or the standard. My motherboard (asrock ab350m hdv) has the M.2 slot for storage, was thinking on using it but the standard SSD is cheaper.. Can you guys help me on this? Thanks very much.

Ok I know that Windows 10 is full of Bloatware but WTH. I don't fully understand what happened, but what I can say is that yesterday I had to turn off my PC, After 2 hours I came back and turned it on, Explorer was showing 40GB of free space instead of the usual 60. (I Have a 256GB SDD :P). I free'd up some space, got back to 60GB, and kept editing on After Effects. Day later, I lost 4 GB of space, I'm hopeless. Don't drop me on this one. Specs: https://www.acer.com/ac/it/IT/content/model/DT.BAPET.030 I know it's in Italian, You can still understand. I hope.

Hi, I have an Asus K53sm laptop, which is not detecting 2 Crucial MX500 2 TB SSDs simultaneously. I have inserted one in the Primary slot & the other in a Caddy in place of the optical drive. One of them is my boot disks which work fine. But the other is not detected in windows at all. However it works perfectly in an external enclosure. I have tried to insert another HDD (Toshiba drive 1 TB) along with my primary SSD and it works fine. Can anyone help? is it a hardware limitation OR I need to enable some option in BIOS?

Hoping anyone can provide insight, I brought my PC to microcenter and they did not diagnose it correctly and I believe they lied in the testing they performed, to say the least I am upset. BSOD errors I have experienced this far trying to troubleshoot: 0x080070035 0xc0000221 0xc0000428 PFN_LIST_CORRUPT BCD Errors when trying to install windows Other Errors: Within MSINFO32 most of my networking information is N/A System crashes with trying to download and install any software/game/app/update Troubleshooting performed: Wiped all drives within Linux and attempted to reinstall windows using a known good windows installer Cloned my laptop drive to my Samsung SSD and all other drives, system will only boot off a cloned drive or fresh install drive from another system, can not install windows using my MOBO Already exchanged my Samsung SSD for a working one. My M.2 1tb Crucial drive is dysfunctional as tested by microcenter Current time: After picking up my PC from microcenter I tested only my 860 EVO in the system and still got the BSOD with code 0xc0000221 and the 0xc0000428. I've tried booting to the windows install media with 0 drives connected and still got BSOD, this installer works on any other systems just fine System specs: Inwin 850 PSU Nvidia RTX 2070 (tried with this uninstalled as well i7 9700K 7 Inwin RGB fans Inwin 303 MSI white dragon edition case Asus z390-E gaming Strix Pci based USB hub(disconnected right now) 32gb trident z RGB RAM (I have tested each stick in each slot with no change) Big example: Installing destiny or anything else will cause the system to crash Dragonball fighterz anti cheat flags something and crashes the game When trying to install NFS heat through origin it will download, how the progress bar will get to 47% drop to 32%, go to 39% drop again and then the system crashes I got tried to write to read only memory errors as well. I have swapped out many a drive at this point with 0 success Honestly at this point I have no clue what is causing this to crash and obviously I'm not spending any more money for a diagnosis because any place will incorrectly diagnosis it. The system boots off a drive with an OS whether it's cloned or clean installed on another system. I cannot clean install on this setup no matter how hard I try. I am 97% certain my board is borked. But before I RMA and spend time completely down if like to see if I can fix it. What bothers me the most is I told microcenter the issue with even booting to an installer and they said they were able to but the second I got home and tried mine I got a BSOD once again. I feel they straight up lied.

So I'm curious if anyone has any opinions on hybrid drives? I personally had 1 in a laptop for about 6 months and it bricked on me so i just replaced it with a full SSD, so needless to say I'm not a fan but like, whats the target customer for these things? Pros and cons? Positive and negative personal experiences? Best of both worlds or do they exist simply because they can?

First of All, I have no idea what I am doing. That said, I used what I had available, and put together a collection of parts to build a PC. In fact, when I finished, I had 2X NVMe m,2, 2X SSD, and various sizes of hard drives great and small. So: In my B450/Ryzen7/GTX10606GBDDR5/32GBRAM setup, how would be the best way to utilize the drives? Would it be different for VR? For Example: Should I RAID the 2 NVME's, use 1 of the SSDs for WIN10, Another for Games?

Hello everyone! I am facing a Problem which 2 IT students couldnt figure out in about 10 hours of troubleshooting. I got myself a 3 New fans for the Front of my PC Case (Dark Base Pro 900). After installing them, my SSD started acting up and i thought it was just a cable error and checked the cables, was all good. SSD had my OS installed and just wouldnt boot. "please select a proper boot device and reboot". So i thought maybe my Windows just randomly got screwed up and reinstalled Windows. SSD booted up like 2 times into windows and then suddenly stopped again, so same procedure. nothing. I tried different HDDs and SSDs, it was booting flawless with them. I thought maybe it was bad luck and my SSD just died. So i went ahead and bought myself a M.2. Installed windows and all good. (my main SSD was still working btw, but just not booting into windows. Couldnt figure out why.) After installing the M.2 and Windows, etc. i started reconnecting my HDDs and SSDs. This is where things got real messed up. 2 Hard drives showing when booting, reboot, only 1, reboot again - none. We were unpluging and repluging cables for about 5 hours trying to figure out if a Hard drive, a SATA cable, or a PSU cable died. All cables are working just fine and so do the Harddrives. So we started installing one Hard drive and boot, then 2 and boot, then 3. etc. It stops working when i connect 2 HDDs at the same time. All SSDs + 1 HDD works, but 0 SSDs and 2 HDDs don't. i really cant tell if its the HDDs, the Mainboard or Windows. We basically tried everything and no result. It was working just fine and the it suddenly stopped. I really hope someone could help me out in here. Thanks in advance. My Specs: i7 6700K MSI Gaming Pro Carbon Z270 MSI GTX 1070 16 GB DDR4 Trident Z Ram 750W Corsair PSU.

Hi everyone! I currently have a 1TB HDD in my PC and I am planning to get an M.2 ssd to only put the OS, and maybe some applications on it. However, I still wanna use my 1TB HDD for games and general storage. the c drive that has that has my OS is in a partition that has around 300GB. I dont mind reseting my PC and downloading everything from scratch if that will make the process any easier lol.

Im planning to purchase 2 ssd one for my PC (the one im using to type this topic on) and one for the Family PC these PCs has windows in it (obviously) and i want to remove Windows so ill have just my files and Windows will be on the SSD how can i do this?
