Hello, i want your help to build my friend's PC. He want PC for modeling of engineering components using CAD, SolidWorks (Solid Edge) and Eplan programs and too for normal daily usage. He want silent and long time functional PC too. This PC isn't for gaming. My friend have Dell Vostro 420, so we will use his case, if we can (we will must, before buy, remeasure dimension for GPU and CPU cooler). If you think, that it is verry bad case, we can use another new one. My first test is this: https://www.czc.cz/3156mop300hnu9s9cv8k048u8a/seznam (cca 1100$) - sorry for link from czc.cz, but i'm from Czech Republic, and this website has, for me, the best list. 1, I dont know lots of about GPU. Its better use GTX 1060 or RX 480. GTX 1070 or cheap Quadro/FirePro card? 2, About motherboard. I dont know why spend more for motherboard. Can this motherboard adjust FAN control? 3, CPU cooler, will it be enought? I read review for Fera 2, and it was verry well rated. 4, RAM, how many RAM memory need this programs? 5, I dont know, if PSU, HDD and SSD are right choice. Ok sorry for bad english. I dont know these programs verry well so i hope, that you will help me. Thank you for helping ideas!

Hi, I am currently running a basic, and oddly balanced (i'll explain later) system that I use for school and gaming. I have worked with Inventor and Solidworks on it with little to no issue in the past but recently I started using flow simulations and have had some problems. The system becomes incredibly unresponsive, everything is stutters, the programs crash from time to time, and it basically prevents me from doing work. My specs are listed below and in depth on my profile and I basically am looking for recommendations for upgrades. I am a student on a tight budget - $400 CAD. Specs: AMD FX-8350 (got free from family with a HP AM3+ mobo), 8gb DDR3 ram, Radeon R7 360 gpu, Corsair CX600m psu, Corsair H60 AIO cooler, 2 Bitfenix spectre pro fans, 2 arctic cooling rev 1.2 rans, nzxt fan controller, all inside a bitfenix prodigy m case.

My current laptop just isn't cutting it for the workload that I'm asking it to do. I'm planning to build my first pc and would like some input. I'm an engineering student in 3rd year from B.C., Canada, so if Canadian pricing is preferable. I'm not set to a specific constrained budget (which is sort of a problem as my build keeps getting more expensive), but I'd like to keep under 1000 CAD. My primary use will be for school, and possibly some light gaming, although to justify it to my parents it's for my school workload. The primary workload I have for school is design work, primarily with Solidworks, although I am also using the Altair software suite. Along with this design work, are simulations to validate the designs. While working on designs for my school's formula SAE team, we have quite large assemblies which really strain my current laptop ( open the file and come back 3 minutes later kind of performance). With that in mind here is my build. I don't have to pay for windows thanks to my school CPU Ryzen 5 1500X CPU Cooler Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO Motherboard ASRock - AB350 Pro4 ATX Memory G.Skill - Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 Storage ADATA - Premier Pro SP600 256GB 2.5" SSD Video Card Gigabyte - GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Case Deepcool - TESSERACT SW ATX Mid Tower Power Supply EVGA - B3 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Fully-Modular https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/user/marriokart/saved/76jccf I'm not set on the 1050 Ti, I may try to pick up a used quadro, as Solidworks can't make use of non-workstation cards. I would also consider an intel build, especially with coffee lake,as Solidworks is much better optimized for intel, although ryzen seems to be much better value. I'm going to add a HDD at a later time,I don't tend to use a whole lot of storage. Any tips or recommendations would be very appreciated.

I plan on building a new PC in December this year. I heard that Coffee Lake and a refresh of Ryzen will be coming around that time. I will be using the PC for SolidWorks and gaming. SolidWorks (CAD) modeling benefits most with an extremely high single-threaded clock speed. I will not be rendering much. I might purchase a motherboard before then and I wanted to know whether Coffee Lake will be on X299 or some new Z370 chipset. Also are there any articles with rumors (or confirmed specs) of the clock speeds of upcoming Ryzen and Coffee Lake CPUs?

Hi guys I'm currently looking at a used Toshiba P50-B-10V for 400€ here in Portugal. It has an i7-4710HQ (quad core), 8GB RAM, a 1080p display (which, buying new laptops, you can only get if you're willing to spend 900+€ on it) and an R9 M265X for a GPU. (1200€ when new...) New, the best thing I can get for that much (480€ actually) is an HP with an AMD A9 9420, 8GB RAM as well, but a 1366x768 display. (pretty shitty when compared to the Toshiba) My brother plans on using the laptop for SolidWorks and the usual casual media stuff. (and maybe some light-ish gaming, mostly FIFA and DiRT) I'm sure the Toshiba blows the shit out of the HP, while costing less, and it is the one I should buy. The thing is, is it worth it getting a 2 year old laptop? (will most likely have to buy a new battery for it, but that's relatively cheap). Thanks in advance!

im new into CAD designing, mostly Metalwork stuff. now i got Intellicad (Autocad Clone basically), just wondering what people here use CAD and looking for people to talk to About CAD and learn more about the program and what people are doing. not here to steal idea's from people, but happy to talk to people and bounce idea's. would like to see a community CAD chat put in here as well, not sure how many people here use CAD im happy to talk to anyone starting and or experienced users about CAD related stuff. learn some new tricks.

I was wondering if anyone knew any good guides to building something that would run software like Solidworks, Rhino, Fusion, and Keyshot. I want to build something but it would be more on a budget. I was aiming around $750USD but I can budge if I need to. As far as I know so far, CPU with a good core count is good as well as good amount of RAM. I could be wrong, this is why I am asking.

Hello LTT world, Ive seen many a review and suggestion for "workstation" builds but from what I understand they all* focus on programs optimized for parallel processing. As a mechanical designer by trade I am frequently stuck with an already built "top of the line" pc with 8 cores, 16gb of ram, am Nvidia Quadro 4000 and a frozen program with one core redlining while the 7 others idle. I've used Nvidia's gpu utilization program and that thing barely hits 70%. So my understanding is this, CPU clock speed trumps cores and unless you're using 8 year old quadros, you have enough VRAM. Does anyone have any input or suggestions regarding this? Best regards, The goaty one

I'm a huge Ultimate Frisbee fan. If any of you has ever played you'll know how dirty you can get after a game, and so does the disc. To not have to put a dirty disc inside my bag I made a clip that allows you to attach a disc to the outside of your bag. As a first year engineering student I didn't have a whole lot of experience with CAD, regardless I just gave it a try anyway. The program I used was Solidworks. It's the one they teach us how to use but you could also use Fusion 360 (which is free). First I designed the "cross-section" then extruded it. Then I rendered it and tried to imagine how it'd look like irl. (emphasis on 'tried' as I had no dimensions the disc but the height, I had to estimate a lot and expected to have to improve the model a few times) I don't personally own a 3D printer so I went to 3dhubs to find someone to print it for me. Looking to buy a 3D printer at some point, open for suggestions. In the end I was pretty happy with the result. Perfect fit the first time, so glad I didn't have to go back to change the model and reprint it. The print was made of PLA, not sure whether that's the best material but the dude I contracted assured me it was just fine. I had tons of fun making this and gained a lot of experience. I'm this won't be the last project. PS: Please make a CAD/ 3D printing Forum, surely other people will also like sharing their experiences

Hello Everyone, I am new to this forum and heard a lot this forum, so I have come here to ask some help, I want to build a PC / Workstation for mainly Solidworks, I have selected the graphic card, but rest of the parts are really confusing, Graphic card: AMD FirePro W5100 (Already purchased $351.2 from Amazon) I really confused between the two processors, 1. Intel i7 4790K, 2. AMD Fx 8350 As you can understand this problem mess everything up because the are really different socket types, I really need a help which processor will be best for my work (Solidworks mainly) or is there any other suggestions will be welcomed, My budget is $1300 - $1400 including the cost of GPU $351.2.

Hello everyone, Me and my f@cked up buddy we will start a huge project building our own pc case as "tidy" as possible for watercool, 2 gpu etc etc etc.... So I was thinking if we can find some general components as a solidwork parts so we can just implement them instead of designing them. I know that @TaranLMG did some project with 3D printing. I don't want to spent 3 months just to make all the part (I don't really mind if they are not in the exact shape). Thank you very much and I hope I will have a positive response!

Hey there guys I had a question about my current system and its worthiness for working in a College level solid works class. I imagine that some of you out there likely are very experienced with this and may have possibly even taken the CWSP, which I hope to take and pass as well. Here are my System Specs Sony Viao Laptop (I basically inherited it) Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3337U CPU @1.8 GHz Installed memory (RAM): 6.00GB Intigrated Graphics Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 System Type: 64-bit Model Number: "SVF15214CXB" http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Sony/vaio-svf15214cxb The computer was manufactured in mid 2013. I think that is about all the spec info that I have for you guys. According to the crucial website it says that there is only one RAM slot in my computer. The largest stick of RAM the have available is 8GB which would meet the minimum requirements for the software. The real kicker with the 8GB is that it is about $80 on crucial. I found 8gb of ram for my laptop on Amazon though at about $45 dollars (https://www.amazon.com/Memory-Sony-Vaio-SVF15214CXB-DDR3-12800/dp/B00YEV7SB0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483843467&sr=8-1&keywords=SVF15214CXB) I am hesitant because it may not work. There are no reviews on it. Preferable I would rather go with 12 or 16 (Actually I think that the limit on this computer is 12 according to the crucial website) but there is simply nothing available that will let me go that high with only one slot so I am stuck with 8. I have heard reports from other students that they have been able to get by with 6GB of RAM but it does on the rare occasion crash. So I have 3 options as of right now, -1 Do nothing and carry on, and just make sure that I don't have to many background programs running along with not to many browser tabs, and hope the integrated graphics and CPU can handle the program. -2 Fork the 80 or 45 over and upgrade the RAM, and then hopefully the graphics card and CPU will be good enough to handle the program on their side of the table. -3 Sell my current laptop and reinvest in a newer more beefy laptop that will meet my needs for the next few years and possibly into my professional career as well. I'd love to build a PC to met his need, but I need a machine that I can use in the class room. If you think this is right would you have any suggestions for moderately powerful laptop, that's affordable. Thanks for your help in advanced looking forwards to your feedback!

Hello guys, I am an Engineering student. I am currently thinking whether i can use my RTX 2060 with RX 580 (currently not have) to work in one system. The system is used for 3D CAD (Solid Works) and for playing games, Machine Learning and other stuffs. So i am thinking whether it is possible to use the RX 580 for the solidworks and RTX 2060 for other stuffs beside solidworks? If it is possible, do you think it is needed? any other recommendation for my usage? Thank you for your reply! Looking forward for your reply!

workstation A Budget build for workstation and gaming
Denracer posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
hello LTT viewers! I'm new to the forum and have been a regular LTT watcher for a while, but never join the forum. I'm coming here today because I need you guy's to help me in building a workstation. I'm an industrial design student and other then gaming occasionally I have to Sketch, build Solidworks 3D model, keyshot, fusion 360, Vray and rhino ETC. I've never built a PC of my life and only have been buying laptops (MSI GP60, Lenovo P40 yoga), so I'm still a NOOB on the desktop side. My budget is around $1000 and doesn't know if this price is honestly even possible (due to how pricy Quadro cards are)...if you guys or LTT workers see this, please help (a PC part picker link or a list would be greatly appreciated) Thanks for reading -
Short version, 1. Budget & Location I'm trying to keep it under 1500usd. Building in California. 2. Aim Mostly for learning heavy duty solidworks and other cad programs with eventually doing full machine modeling for firearms engineering and material science study. 3. Monitors Starting with one, will do more when we have a larger battery bank on the trailer. 4. Peripherals Got a good mouse but need a good keyboard with full numpad. Going to game on it but I'd rather have quieter keys. Walls are paper thin, my wife's a morning lark and I'm a night owl. 5. Why are you upgrading? My Lenovo y700 is starting to have issues and it's really chugging on the larger cad files. Long version, My wife and I are got stupid lucky/unlucky and inherited a house that allows us to go back to school for the next year as well as actually go on our honeymoon six years after getting married. I'm from Belgium originally (Belgian fries ftw) and have never had the chance to go see the country so we're going on a few month road trip while we rent out the house for skool moneyz. My four year old Lenovo is starting to crash more frequently when running solidworks and is starting to overheat here and there with the 90+ degree heat in CA. I'm running a GTX960M 4gb vram 16gb ram and a quad core @ 2.3ghz. I got the laptop to go back and forth to school originally but now that all my schooling is online I can go back to tinkering with desktops. Last time I built a desktop was when top notch was a single core 733mhz machine. Now I'm trying to see if I can build a desktop that can stand up to being in a trailer. I don't mind disconnecting all the peripherals and wires when we stop somewhere for the week it just needs to be sturdy so I don't destroy my gpu connection or something. Does anyone have any recommendations for the ultimate Lan party pc? I've got access to a very big metal shop to make fittings and sheet metal parts to stabilize things but I'd rather go for out of the box warranty etc and a proven build if anyone's got it. I can go back to a newer stronger laptop if this doesn't exist but it kills me that I can't upgrade my laptop. Any help on this would be shweet.

solidworks Mid rig for Engineering and light gaming
NaGoldfarb posted a topic in New Builds and Planning
I am looking to build my first computer and I am looking for some advice. I want to build a mid machine ($1000ish) that I can use running engineering software such as Solidworks and Matlab. I am not too heavy of a user but I definitely have Assemblies with 100-200 parts. I also want to be able to run some games. I have 1080P monitors that are not the greatest but I am not looking to upgrade. One big feature that I need to have is 2 boot drives for dual booting Linux and windows with a hard drive for additional data. I want something more powerful than my current laptop I currently using. Which runs SW as well as SW likes to run. Levenvo P50 with a Xenon E3-1505M v5 @ 2.80GHz × 8 Quadro M2000M 16GB of RAM 2x 256GB M.2 drives 500GB harddive. I know that SW is only "certified" on Quadro card. But I am confused if I really need one or I can use a gaming card or if I can run games on a Quadro. Can anyone please point me in the right direction? -

A friend of mine is having some issues with his work-PC (laptop). He's using programs such as Solidworks, Vray, Sketchup and Unreal engine. While using these his PC is slow and crashes a lot. It has a i7-6700hq CPU, 16GB Ram, GTX 970 (or better cant remember correctly). What I'm asking is this: What would be the best hardware to put together for a PC to run all these applications smoothly? What should be a priority hardware wise? Recomendations for a "budget build" and a "ultimate build" is apprecitated.

Need Help Uninstalling SolidWorks
i_know_but_need_help posted a topic in Programs, Apps and Websites
So basically I was being stupid and decided to just try to move solidworks program files from c drive to d drive. I somehow moved, them but obviously it didint work. Then i panicked and just started deleteing all soldiworks files, from program files, users, everywhere. However, in control panel, solidworks still shows up, but when, it tries to uninstall from there, it doesn't work, and continuously fails. I had tried reinstlaling soldiworks only to go in this cycle again, and I am here, with no solidworks instqaller files or anything, but solidworks still shows up still in contorl panel, and doesnt uninstall. I even deleted all solidworks registry files.- 2 replies

I'm in need for an upgrade of a mobile workstation. I currently have a Thinkpad L450 with an i5-5200u and a 72wh battery. I did me good service but its 4 years old and not fast enough for my workloads. Budget: 500-1000€ in germany (i can get student discounts). If there is a really good reason i can go to 1200€ Usecase: 50% office (powerpoint, excel and pdf's, also outdoor use), 40% Design engineering (Solidworks assembly of 500+ parts, matlab, Ansys Workbench, Altair Inspire, rarely 3dsmax, Programming), 10% photo editing in lightroom Mobility and IO: My laptop is still good for office use and i have a place in my university where i can leave stuff safely. My idea was to use a itx machine or a intel nuc with this: Nexdock. I know its a bit weird but it would be usefull for like raspberry pi projects too so its something. I do need sd card support and a decent keyboard and trackpad combo. Also thunderbolt is a nice bonus for future eGPU upgrades. RAM/ROM: everything will be upgraded to 16gb ram. I need at least 500gb of space but i have a 500gb 2,5" ssd on hand so if supported i would just use that, no need to upgrade the NVMe drive. This is what i have considered so far. I honestly can't decide what to do. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1L1MTAjGc1m-psDUdSkTZLTBB2W4Gju5az60NM_p-Kpg/edit?usp=sharing I have heard that AMD consumer GPU's are better than consumer Nvidia ones but i'm not really sure if that makes a big difference. Also are Intel 15W Cpu's even a good idea for this kind of workload? I feel like i should go straight for the 45W one and get a gaming laptop. What about AMD integrated graphics, is that halfway acceptable?

My brother is in his junior year of college and the program he's enrolled in involves using a lot of programs like Solidworks, and his laptop with his i5 4210u and his 6gb of ram and intel integrated graphics is having trouble keeping up...he never plays any games on his laptop, so what would be the best option for him to upgrade for better performance?
