Hey guys, recently, I've been looking into smartwatches casually, but I can't seem to settle. I've basically narrowed it down to four, each with pros and cons, and my very hypothetical use case scenario - can anyone give advice on it? 1. Pebble Cheap. Not just the price. 2. Pebble Steel IMO the best looking smartwatch apart from maybe the Urbane. 3. Pebble Time Colour, that's really the thing that it has going for it 4. Moto 360 Android wear, thus more functionality. I didn't go for all those pebbles for no reason: I really would like the high battery life. I don't want to have to charge a *watch* every day or night, and then not even have the display on at all times. Because if I want to use something to check the time or notifications, I'll pull my phone out of my pocket. I mostly want to be able to see notifications when they come in and decide whether it's worth getting my phone out; I want to keep my phone in another room (quite bulky in the pocket) and still see messages from Whatsapp, Telegram (very important) and possibly Facebook, and I want to control music. Other things I'll probably discover once I get into the smartwatch game. Contrary to popular opinion, I prefer the more classic look of the steel over the modern 360 (also that chinbar, nope), and I don't like the look of the Time at all. The 360 and steel are about the same price, with the regular Pebble maybe being more suited for entry level, being very, very cheap. So basically, if I didn't overlook a crucial feature about the Time it's out, and if Android Wear isn't infinitely superior for my light use the better looks and battery life of the Steel will kill everything else. Thanks!

The Verge NYT CNET This is going to be big! Problems do include a bit of lag, since apps are not local on the watch for now, and a short battery life, but still a battery that will still take you through the day. However, Apple's platform seems to be significantly more powerful than Android Wear. It's more like a new device, less an extension of your phone. Smartwatches are headed towards the mainstream, and I definitely see people at my school and outside buying apple watches, just to be the first. And this product will only get better over time, with more developers and more competition pushing it forward along with the entire category. Opinions? Other Reviews: WSJ Re/Code Bloomberg

I bought a LG G R from Best Buy about a month ago. I used it for about a week with no issues (I really liked it) then I had issues with the bluetooth. I called Bestbuy and thought their exchange policy was ridiculous (I pay for return shipping, then when they receive the watch and take 5-7 business days to inspect it, they'll ship me a new one), so I just returned it and bought one off Amazon. However, I've noticed a few weird things: The manual is in Spanish (and it's not one of those that are 1/2 spanish and 1/2 english, it's all spanish) It's missing the "Play music" option on the menu thing It came with a chinese wall adaptor and a universal plug converter It came from a reshipping factory (this might be because it's fulfilled by Amazon) It came in a box shipped by UPS that contained a FedEx bag that contained the watch (Again, may be because it's fulfilled by Amazon) However, it has all the small things - the box looked real (or a very high quality fake), the protective tape is on there with the tabs in the same places as I remember, the base and everything looks the same and the "leather" strap is just as awful. I called LG and they said they can't determine if it's a genuine watch because they can only do serial number lookups on phones. Should I return it? If so, where should I get another one? I don't want to use Best buy or Amazon, and if I buy one I want to make sure it's good quality.

One of the biggest german public health insurance organizations said, that they will subsidize fitness trackers like the Apple Watch. The offer does not include smartphones that monitor health information and is limited to 50€ (~55$) every 2 years or 50% of the devices price. As part of a trend towards a more provision oriented health care system, some of the major organizations already subsidized fitness courses or even lowered their plan prices if people did sports in a club regularly. So I recently sent my Moto 360 off because the back was terribly cracked (the cracked back is actually covered under warranty if any of you have that problem). I got the replacement this morning and it won't connect. I already forgot my old watch in android wear and connect, even tried reinstalling both apps. I've factory reset set the watch many times, and restarted my phone a couple times as well. My phone (HTC M8) finds the watch almost immediately, just won't connect. My original watch was working fine before I sent it off and got the replacement. When the watch starts up, I get the "install android wear" screen. So I go to android wear and try to connect. When I select the watch to pair, the pairing screen to confirm the code pops up on the watch for just a second and then goes away. It goes away before I can check yes or no to connect. The few times I've been able to hit the yes check, my phone goes straight to the "couldn't pair" screen. I've even tried connecting straight through the bluetooth settings and the same general thing happens. Anyone have similar problems or some way to get this working? Thanks!

The No. 1 S3 is a Chinese round smartwatch. It comes in a couple of colours and both combinations are looking pretty good for the price of the device. This smartwatch costs $59usd and for that money you get a smartwatch that is also a phone. You can use it independently from your phone or with your phone. The watch itself it's made out of plastic but it does look like it is metalic. A metalic version would have been nice but it would most likely increase the cost. There is only one button available on the watch and it has a touch screen that it's supposed to be scratch resistant. the back is removable and you can remove the battery, insert a memory card and a sim card. The 350mah battery is able to keep the watch going for an entire day, but will most definatley not make it thru the next day. This watch is not waterproof. There is also a speaker on the back of the device that it is surprisingly loud. There is also a microphone on the left hand side of the watch in case you want to make any phone calls or record anything. On one of the straps there is a heart rate monitor that works very well, however it doesn't have a function to randomly measure your heart rate thru-out the day. If you use the watch as a smartwatch there is an app that you can download and that way all your phone notifications get to the watch. Some of the health functions of the watch like the heart rate, or the pedometer will sync on the watch. The watchfaces are quite limited and there is no way to get new ones or customize the ones that are available. The apps that come on the watch are also the only apps that you can get, but i believe that there are enough for the little screen that the watch has. You can change the music playing on your phone from the watch, take pictures from the watch and small things like that. I ended up using the watch as a watch, not as a smartwatch, just because i find the pedometer and heart rate monitor useful during runs and workouts. Overall, for $58.99usd it is a very decent watch. Source: getpebble.com Apple is now rejecting app submissions to their App Store that contain references to other platforms in the description and/or metadata. The following quote is from Steve's post on the GetPebble forums I have bolded the important parts. Basically, if you want to have an app on the App Store, you can't reference any other platforms in your apps description, metadata, or even marketing material. How are people supposed to know what platforms you support unless you tell them? I could understand if it was a choice that Apple made based on choosing to explicitly not support their platform, however this rejection, ironically, was served when the developer attempted to add Apple Watch support to their app. Steve again, from the comments:

So people of the internet, you kept saying how spending a lot of a smartwatch with no prestige didn't make any sense - here is a Smartwatch that has plenty of prestige behind it. So for 1,400 will you put your money where your mouths were and get this instead? Probably not. 1,400 is encroaching "entry" level luxury watch status, but with your 1,400 you also get FOURTY hours of battery life. Thats right. 40. Not shabby at all eh? Begs the question, how smart will this watch be? Or will it employ a mechanical front with digital screen in the back, so your watch stays as a watch for a lot longer? Who knows. Interesting either way. Curious to see which design they go with. I'm hoping its the Carrera casing, as shown below, since thats a great looking one. http://www.droid-life.com/2015/04/29/tag-heuers-android-wear-watch-will-cost-around-1400-have-40-hour-battery-life/

The Apple Watch is actually easier to work on than some recent MacBooks. In news that actually surprises me a little, the Apple Watch is actually quite repairable for the things you'd probably need to replace the most - strap, battery and display. Heck, the way the display is removed makes me think that sapphire versions might actually show up (or you can use the parts from the Edition and normal Watch if you so desired). Pretty neat, and in contrast to how Apple tech has been going so far. Of course, since the S1 sits in resin and is sealed up, thats harder to replace. No doubt that a Apple repair program of sorts could do it no problem, maybe even follow through with that rumoured "upgrade" plan, but don't expect it to be easy on your own. http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/04/ifixit-replacing-the-apple-watchs-battery-is-easy-replacing-the-s1-is-hard/ https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Apple+Watch+Teardown/40655?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Apple+Watch+Teardown&utm_content=Apple+Watch+Teardown+CID_e16d099d5d25d6145061643c0c824775&utm_source=CampaignMonitor&utm_term=Apple%20Watch

File this under "not shocking" even though some people are going to be surprised that such a device could sell so much, so fast. These estimates come ahead of the news that the Apple Watch is in fact shipping now, so consumers might start getting them before the 24th in some cases. I'm pretty amazed. We all know Apple markets well, but this is something else. Hopefully this encourages other smartwatch makers to take the game seriously and make products that just look good and wear good, something that not all Android Wear products have figured out yet. A watch can only be a watch when it kinda fits like a watch. Who'd a thunk it. Make a decent product and market it well, you'll sell a lot. Google, take note. Treat Wear seriously, don't leave it by the side of the road like half the shit you come up with. http://9to5mac.com/2015/04/20/apple-watch-sales-estimate/ http://www.macrumors.com/2015/04/20/apple-watch-preorders-begin-shipping/

The VivoWatch, according to Technobuffalo and Engadget, will track sleep patterns, workouts (so I assume heart rate), and will be water and dust resistant. It is unknown as to whether the device will support notifications and all of the other smartphone amenities one can expect from competitive devices, but Asus is claiming a 10-day battery life! Are you excited for this product, and will you be getting one? Comment below!

It is not the first time that Apple and Swatch crashed. Last year there is some reports that Swatch gave Apple a hard time with the iWatch trademark ( http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/148991-swatch-giving-apple-a-hard-time-with-the-iwatch-trademark/) and then there are some rumors that Swatch may go solo and develop their own smartwatches ( http://tech.firstpost.com/uncategorized/swatch-goes-solo-in-smartwatch-business-following-iwatch-rumours-231739.html ). But now new info emerges, and it seems this smartwatch would be an interesting one... Firstly confirmed by Swatch's Chief Executive Officer Nick Hayek the smartwatch would be communicated via NFC, and interesting the smartwatch "won’t have to be charged". I'm unable to find more details on Swatch's implementation, but I guess it would be a big competitor to other smart wearables if the Swatch smartwatch can really do it. Also Hayek also confirmed that the smartwatch will work with "Windows and Android software", but no mention on iOS platform. So the smartwatch may not work on iOS. Lastly, just like Samsung, Swatch is working on a mobile payment system, as they are already in talks with retailers on it, and you can make mobile payments via the smartwatch. Lastly Hayek confirmed the smartwatch will enter the market in two to three months. If so, it would be an interesting competitor to Apple Watch, Android Wear and other smart wearables.... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-02-05/swatch-plans-smartwatch-to-compete-with-apple-watch-s-debut http://www.macrumors.com/2015/02/05/swatch-smartwatch/ http://pocketnow.com/2015/02/05/swatch-smartwatch

Hey, Turning to the allmighty LTTforum to assist me in a difficult choice... Currently looking into buying a smartwatch. And after some research, im down to two devices, a Moto360 or a Pebble Steel. Now im curious if anyone has any experience with these devices. Is it worth sacrificing the excellent batterylife of the Pebble for the extended functionality of the Moto360? They're priced pretty much the same here in Sweden. Kind Regards Bingbear

LG just announced their first all metal smartwatch through a press statement, called the "Watch Urbane". As the title suggested, this watch is made of metal,. In fact it looks like a G Watch R with a metal casing. It has a similar specs as the G Watch R, Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip, 1.3-inch, circular plastic OLED screen, powered by Android Wear, and etc. But it comes in two colors, polished silver and gold finish, and it is complemented by a beautifully stitched natural leather strap for a more classic look (as LG said in their press statement). Also the strap can be replaced by any 22mm wide band. LG will show off this Watch Urbane at Mobile World Congress, and no info on pricing and availability was announced in the press statement. IMO, it looks better than the Apple Watch, but it's not my cup of tea. I hope LG would make a metal version of the G Watch R, as I like G Watch R's design more than that of the Moto 360(and this watch). http://www.lgnewsroom.com/newsroom/contents/64948 http://techcrunch.com/2015/02/15/lg-watch-urbane/ http://www.designntrend.com/articles/40051/20150216/lg-s-metal-watch-urbane-non-geek-audience-high-fashion.htm

Source:http://9to5mac.com/2015/02/19/pebble-teases-new-model-sources-say-thinner-watch-with-color-screen-in-the-works/ Note: This news isn't 100% confirmed. Keep this fact in mind. I personally see this as good news. As an owner of the original pebble that received said watch merely 2 months ago, I don't think I'm quite ready to upgrade. While these changes are welcome, I worry about the potential increase in price. I guess I'll be keeping watch tell Tuesday.

Apple hasn't disclosed much information about their apple watch so far, however some sources are already claiming the watch to contain a A5 class chip. For battery life things don't look too impressive however, reaching 2.5 hours with heavy use (seriously who would play intensive games on a watch?) and 3.5 hours of continuos app use. Apple initially stated that their watch should be able to make it through a day and go through nightly charging cycles, and they expected around 19 hours of combined usage (including passive times). source: http://9to5mac.com/2015/01/22/apple-targets-for-apple-watch-battery-life-revealed-a5-caliber-cpu-inside/#more-362448
