I have a WEIRD one here. I am trying to set up a small renderfarm in my room and I can access shares that I've set up on my server, but I can't ping the thing. The only way that I can access the server is to open Run and then type \\SERVERNAME, then I can upload to shares and download from them and do whatever else, but Windows simply can't find it any other way. I've turned on network discovery on all of the computers in the setup and I've even played with Windows Firewall to try to ensure that it isn't blocking packets that are required for Network Discovery. I believe the problem is on my server, because all of the other computers on my LAN can access one another without any problems. If you know how to delve into Windows Server 2008r2, then please dump some knowledge on me here so I can get this done. The Setup: Rendering Server (Windows Server 2008r2), Laptop (Windows 10), Desktop Workstation (Windows 10) Thank you for any help mes frères!

I have a server running Windows Server 2008r2, I got a free copy from my brother-in-law, and it is not detected on my network. My network consists of my desktop, laptop, and server. I can access shares on my server by opening "Run" and typing "\\ServerName". I did some reading up on how to enable Network Discovery in Windows Server 08 (which is automatically disabled) and followed the steps of going into Windows Services and enabling UPnP, SSDP, and DNS client. I'm trying to enable network discovery mainly because I'm going to use Renderpal V2 to render animations from my pc to the server over the network. Thank you for any help, mah nerds

so my friend has been playing The Crew for a while and he has a long progress in the game compared to me. he has completed the story and he has also completed most challenges and is at level 59. recently i started playing the game and i am in level 14 now. i think i have finished the story by 25% and done some challenges as well. so today both of us tried to play together today for the very first time. he is in my friend list in Uplay and when i tried to invite him to my crew in the game he is unable to get in.when he accepts the invitation it gives the error "unable to join the crew".he sees a red cross in my profile picture as well. same thing happens when he invites me. and i can see him in the map sometimes but when i go to his position his car is not visible to me. when i go towards other online players they appear nicely. is this some problem from the ubisoft side or is it some problem like he is in a higher level than i am in so i cant join him. but he tried to go and put a public event invitation to see if can play together like that, however i did not get the invite but some other random players were able to see it and they joined after a couple of minutes and out of those players one guy was level 5 so i think player level doesnt matter for inviting to a crew. what is going on? is there any fix to this problem?

Hey everyone, I want to buy a MikroTik RouterBOARD RB2011UiAS-RM but I need to have some ports open for my servers. My dad however needs a secure network for business reasons. I was wondering if I could configure it, and if so how, to have two separate networks with my server network having open ports and the house network protected. I don't want to buy another firewall and was wondering if anyone knew how to do this. Thanks -The_Auditor

Hello, I did a little searching through the LTT forums for any content related to Proxmox and ESXi. While I did find some information, I was unable to find any articles specifically comparing Proxmox and ESXi in terms of their features, and their drawbacks. I'd like to compile a list of features and drawbacks for Proxmox, ESXi, and any other hypervisors you see as good competition. The goal is to compare only free versions of software. Thanks!

Good morning LTT Forum Junkies I'm looking to downsize my current set of servers to one single server that can withstand some expandability (more VM's) and sata is a must. I would really like an atx form factor so I can build it as a desktop tower size (perhaps using an air 540 case). My server setup: Server 1 (vmware) HP Proliant DL320 G6 4 CPUs x 2.133Ghz E5606 Xeon Vmware Sphere 6 Processor sockets: 1 Cores Per: 4 2 nics 4 virtual Machines Currently 3 data stores ( I have drives to expand this but ran out of slots) 4tb currently all together Ram 20gb (15.5gb currently allocated) VMware is running from a 120gb samsung evo ssd. systems ran server 1 Server 2016 Domain Controller Windows 7 File Server/Murmur Server/Plex Server/Milestone VMS for security Cameras. Windows 7 vm of my old pc incase I need to go back and grab a file or run a program I had on that machine that is so rarely used I decided not to transfer it to the new. Random Linux playground Server 2 Free Nas 4 2tb drives zfs ( I have 3 more but ran out of slots) Build FreeNAS-9.10.2-U6 (561f0d7a1) Platform Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU X3440 @ 2.53GHz Memory 16344MB System Time Thu Oct 12 10:25:09 CDT 2017 Uptime 10:25AM up 49 days, 15:53, 0 users Load Average 0.11, 0.34, 0.47 I'm looking to find one atx motherboard with say 12-16 cores 32gb of ram and enough sata ports to make the pope cry. Problem is I want to keep this down on a budget. I will sell these 2 servers once I get the new server up and going so that money can be rolled into the purchase price. It would be awesome if I could find a place that would buy these servers and sell me a driveless server with dual 3ghz or higher hexcore cpu's and 32gb of ram. I understand the freenas server is overkill on power but it was what was available to me and had the appropriate sata ports and slots at the time. Any suggestions or leads would be super helpful. I really want to keep the price down as much as possible. This is just a home server setup that I use to practice on and run plex and a murmur server for my gaming habit. Thanks LTTF!

Hi what a first post on the forum, but I just recently was given 2 dell poweredge R710s with 48 gbs of ram each and no hard drives I'm currently using a program called knime on my desktop quad core with 8gbs of ram to do a research project for one of my classes in school which involves image classification. I was wondering is it possible to take a 250 gb ssd with windows 10 and just stick it in one of the power edges to take advantage of the processing power and if so how can I go about doing that because at the moment my quad core can not handle the load I'm putting on it. All help is appreciated

Our small business was recently donated 3 Dell poweredge 2950s. One of them (I think is Gen 3) was working for a week. The week after I added more memory and removed some intel gigabit NICs for use in another server, but did not use the server. Then the week after that, I go to start it up, and I get the error: Invalid memory configuration. I open the server to find that one of the DIMMs was poped out of place on one side. I reseated the DIMM and started the server again and got the same error. One of the other servers did have a bad DIMM slot, so I started removing Memory Sticks, removing one and trying to boot, untill I had removed all of the DIMMs, obviosly giving a "No memory" error. I then started trying different memory, and got a different error: CPU 0 error". At that point, I was extreemly confused considering I haven't messed with any of the CPUs in any of the servers. I then reseated the CPUs and tried each CPU by itself until putting both of them back in and got a different error: No memory, even though there was memory installed in the server at that time. So thats where I am now. Me and a few other people all agree that the motherboard has gone bad, but I wanted to sak the forum before I purchase a new motherboard (which surprisingly is cheaper than buying a new server). Here are some of the system specs: 2x Xeon E5420s origonaly 24gb ddr2 ECC FBDIMM memory 2x 750w PSUs !I will try new power supplies soon, but i doubt that that would make any difference considering that they are redundant and both have to be completely dead for that to be an issue! Also, the Xeon E5400 linup isn't offisialy supported on dells website, but the other 2 servers have the same prossessers and work fine.

So, I wake up one morning and get ready for work. Get to work and log on to my router (Mikrotik RB2011UiAS) and server at home, hop on to the logs and found that someone in the Netherlands is trying to log on to my server! I go into overdrive and start putting in a rule to block the IP and block RDP to the servers in question. They start to ping my router to see if it responds but it won't, so it seems that they gave up after that. Looking through my logs it's interesting to see what accounts they tried to use (XEROX, USER, USER1, SCANS, RECEPTION, even KEVIN of all people!) and how many tries they did with each account. I've now gone in and blocked the whole country now so I won't get any more requests from them now. My question to the people; what type of firewall rules/security do you run? How strict are you? Going through what I have now it seems that I need to make some revisions on the rules to prevent this from happening again.

Alright, just need some input from people around the forum. I am planning to rework my server back-end for the house. Currently I have an older C2D and a FX machine handling server tasks (Media, HTML, Switch Management, etc. C2D is the Domain DC.) That should be going away. To replace my DC I have an older Dell -Poweredge 2970. Yes I know it's a power hog, and yes I know it's loud, but I had an idea. Dangerous, I know. But instead of putting capatcitors on the fans, could I just put a fan controller in the machine and populate an external bay with a controller? A couple temperature probes and such should allow a controller to manage the heat with PWM fans right? It's CLEARLY not in a data center, so it shouldn't run hot. Anyways, that is the most QUESTIONABLE concept, I'm not even sure if the server would boot. If it doesn't? No harm, no foul, I'll just move the FX machine to that job and the next server will replace the FX machine. Next, I'm planning a system based around the Intel S2600CP2J Motherboard, a dual socket, 2011 board. I want to put two E5-2660 8-Core CPU's in there as a virtualization center for the house. I will migrate all the VM's there, and run them under UNRAID or something. IDK, One of them will be a gaming VM for guests as well. So that mobo, the Xeons, 64GB of HP Server Memory, as well as a GTX 970 I have sitting in my office, and other supporting hardware. Should work. Not really a question, but just a thing. My main question is whether the Poweredge could even function like that. So yeah, thanks for input guys!

I am getting ready to purchase a used Dell Poweredge r410 on ebay for a family nas. My plan is to use Rockstor as the os and have the 4, 3TB hard drive array backed up to the cloud as disaster recovery. My goal is to be able to transfer data to and from it at 80+ mbps over a gigabit connection, as well as have some redundancy. So what's the best way to configure the drives? I'm a little new to Advanced NAS like the one i'm trying to create. Should I use the RAID card (which only supports raid 0 and 1)? Should I put the RAID card in ISA mode and configure something in Rockstor (Also I have little experience with rockstor). Or am I looking at this the wrong way.

Qualcomm, better known for their Snapdragon series of phone SOCs have announced that they've started sending samples of their Centriq 2400 series processors to 'key prospective partners' with expected commercial availability in 2H 2017. Centriq 2400 series CPUs will have up to 48 of Qualcomm's 'Falkor' ARMv8 cores fabricated (presumably by Samsung) using a 10nm FinFET process, making the Centriq 2400 the first server processor with such small feature size. The workloads Qualcomm chose for a demonstration were Java and the Apache Spark and Hadoop cluster computing frameworks running on Linux, hinting at which use cases their solutions would be most competitive in when compared to other architectures. From Qualcomm's press release: I do hope these succeed, but I'm not expecting a flood of ARM commodity servers on the market. These will likely be picked up by large organizations looking to squeeze maximum performance per dollar out of their in house highly customized solutions. Press release Forbes Article

I just turned one of my old laptops into some of a VPS with Ubuntu Server; just to mess around on. But im having an issue... I'd like to trasnfer some files over using FileZilla (SFTP), but using my normal login with wont work as it wont let me upload files without root access. I've tried using passwd -u root, and it comes back with it has been successfuly unlocked and i changed the password to just "test" for now. But its still not working... I can login with root on the laptop itself, but using SSH or SFTP it still says "access denied" or "Authentication failed.". Any help? Im fairly new to all this linux-based server stuff, so sorry if this is a given and im just dumb...

I have 6 Power Edge 2970 Servers I am setting up as data repository, using 6TB SAS drives. 5 of the servers are going to be used as Solaris 11 using iSCSI through fiber optic cable to talk to the windows server which will be the master server running an indexing tool and analysis tool, as well as being the gateway to the network for the Solaris servers. The windows server will see the Solaris servers as partitions and this way they will have fast data transfer speeds with the already equipped fiber optic cards (dual port full duplex, daisy chain one to the next). We have Windows Server 2012 installed on the Master Server, but are encountering issues with the deployment of the Solaris 11.2. Unfortunately the only copies we can find are all meant for V Sphere use, and are .ova files, which you can not boot from the bios to. We want the Solaris to be the main OS for these latter servers. Is there a work around without having to use, VM and the inherit licensing it involves?

Hi all, I work for a small family owned accounting and tax preparation office and we have a server which is quickly reaching the end of its life so I'm looking for some help. We cannot use cloud solutions for security reason, otherwise that would be my first choice. We have 7 workstations, most of which are used simultaneously. We also store semi-sensitive information on this server, which needs to be accessible by all 7 workstations. As my username suggest I don't know too much about all of this so please ask questions for clarification.

Hi Linus and the LTT Community. I would like some advice please. I am building a FreeNAS server that will be used for media streaming and archival storage of family photos, videos, music etc. How do you think of the various names for your servers, linus? At the moment, my own server project is called "Project Bob" until I come up with a proper server name. Any advice given would be highly appreciated. Matt Kinsey (a janky ass britt from the UK)

I'm in the process of setting up a home network (I don't have any of the hardware yet) and I would like some pointers and/or recommendations I have created a diagram of what I can imagine what the finished product might look like. Switch 1 is for personal access to the network; WI-FI and Ethernet connected pc's Switch 2 is for everything else like servers

The Open Compute project, The project from the major tech companies to cooperate on server hardware development, has started working on scalable liquid cooling for servers. There are multiple engineering groups working on the parts for liquid cooling and immersion as can be seen in the opencompute project youtube channel There is a nice video summery of the effort in the video OCPSummit19 - EW: Advanced Cooling - Eco-system Enabling of Liquid Cooling Ingredients Maybe Intel or other vendors will allow linus to take a look at what is being done. considering the scale of production it would probably trickle down to consumer hardware sooner or later.

Hello, I've bought an old HP DL380 G7 server with 2x X5650s and 64GB of ram to run fluid simulations on. I planned on installing ubuntu desktop but it's the slowest thing know to man. I've read that this might be due to graphics capability of the server. I didn't consider this because I spent a year working in IT and we had these servers running Windows Server no issues. I've tried CentOS 7 with GNOME but that went to a black screen as soon as it booted and I pressed anything, apparently for the same issue. Am I going to have to bite the bullet and buy an dedicated GPU or does anyone have any other ideas? Cheers Fraser
