Hey guys, I'm connecting two of my servers with dedicated 10GbE SFP+ connections. Both NICs are seen in OS and are transferring data successfully over the connection at near "max speeds". However the connection speed is not what it should be. I've enabled Jumbo Packets at max size, picture below.

I’m going to be getting quite a bit of new equipment in the next week and I’m just wondering if there are any sort of cheaper sound deduction tips out there. Like sound cancellation foam on the walls, not too expensive specialty fans, that kind of thing. [+] My cabinet is 24u 19", and has a depth of 1005cm. Currently, I only have a Dell PowerEdge 1u server and a switch installed. Thanks in advance!

Hi. So, I have around 1.5TB worth of shadowplay footage, and 800gb of that is old footage that I don't need, but don't really want to delete. I know that I could just get a HDD, move the files to that and then store the drive away, but how would I access those files again? And how would I dump old footage on there in the future? So, I want to work with servers in the future, so I guess this is a good time to learn how to use them! I'm Australian and currently a student, so money is tighter than tight. What should I get / buy to build? And any ideas on how to get parts cheap as chips?

Hello LTT Forums, I wanted to setup a LAN party for my mates and me but wanted to avoid the logistical issue of moving many PCs and the fact they have very weak PCs. I have seen that it is possible to virtualise a GPU so it can be used by multiple VMs. My plan was to have monitors with a cheap thin client hooked up and pop a GPU in my DL160 G6 and create a couple virtual desktops. I was wondering if anyone has done this before and how they did it? Thanks HP Proliant DL160 G6 Single Xeon E5520 @ 2.26GHz - Quad Core with HT 4GB DDR3-1333 2x 250GB SATA HDDs P410 Raid Controller Spare Parts 2x 72.8GB 15K SAS HDDs (1 makes a clicking sound so I have assumed is damaged and should not be used) I am already planning upgrade to 2 Hexacores and 32GB of RAM. The NVIDIA Quadro K2000 looked like a suitable GPU as I am limited to PCIe x16 Gen2 and 1 FH/FL Slot. I am on a limited budget so I can't afford a GRID K1 or similar.

I just wanted to share this great news with you guys We are finally upgrading our servers in the company where I work. Since I love working with hardware I'm super hyped. We are going to get a lot of POWAAAAAA! Ok, maybe not so much, but a lot more than we've had before! We have 3 HP ProLiant DL380 G6 and one G7. Untill now each one of them had only one CPU and max 20GB of RAM now three of them will have 96GB of RAM and the last one will take what we will harvest from the rest of them. All four of course will get one extra CPU Upgrades include: 3x Intel XEON E5530 2.4GHz 1x Intel XEON E5620 2.4GHz 36x 8GB 2Rx4 PC3 RAM 12x 600GB 10K SAS Dual Port 6GB/s hard disks I know, I know: "Pics, or it didn't happen..." Hi I am currently interested in purchasing a small 1U rack server in place of my router at home, I currently have been dissatisfied with consumer routers especially from Linksys and NETGEAR since they always seem to be buggy. I am switching to a 1U rack server since they're pretty much enterprise routers from my understanding. My question is if a $50 server used online such as the Dell Poweredge R410 will be more powerful than say an Asus RT-AC5300? Are the Xeon 5500 series CPUs better than those internal CPUs from consumer routers? If that's the case, should I look into more cores, clock speed, more ram, or a good overall balance of the three? I'm thinking about running Windows Server 2008 with the server to perform my networking tasks. I hope I'm not making a mistake and wish to prevent it here thanks. Cheers, El_Gran_Técnico.

Hey, I am facing really annoying issue when trying to download any content from Steam servers. I am from Poland and my default server is set to Poland, My down/up speeds are around 300/100 MBits/s so exactly 37,5 / 12,5Mbytes/s The problem Is that after I start downloading the speeds is growin to 25 Mbps what is my throttling limit and after a while it drops to 0 or to something around 1-2 Mbps I am downloading it on my second SSD that isnt handling anything at this time, I am using Windows10 on motherboard Gigabyte Z68A-b3-d3 that has 1GBit Lan port Speed tests seems also good when I am looking at servers in my country always around 300/100 I am spreading 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi network to 2-3 other devices and 1-2 other devices through LAN ports My router is TP-Link Archer C5 that;s AC1200 standard I am attaching couple screenshots to help you imagine my problem Sorry for my bad englsish, hope someone will have any idea how could I solve it Nowy obraz mapy bitowej.bmp

Hey All, I'm putting together a project and I want to get my servers off the floor. I've seen people use Lack Tables as a "Lack Rack" However the legs seem hallow and unstable even when they're being stacked feet to feet. If I where to rail mount servers as well as bolt mount such as routers switches etc would I run into any stability issues? Thanks

Hey guys. I have a little trouble. I am a company president that provides educational services online. My page consists of people flowing in and clicking at least 5pages until they get to the product. Our product consists of people filling out reports online and then printing them for their personal use or saving them on the server which is cloud based as of right now. I'm having trouble because current server has php 5.1 which is not recommended and when upgrading it many bugs surface or objects are not recognized by the updated version of php. Now, I am having this trouble because of money and time since my computer scientist can do the work but has not had the sufficient time. Anyway, this is not the main problem since it has been working fine until right now. But, now we are going to have 10x of usual traffic (e.g. more users, more clicks, more saving, but not uploading). I have been told that I should move the hosting site since it is shared. I need top notch security, upgrading php and the page to react fast. I need to know which server to use VPS or Dedicated for the insurance of functionality and downtime. Should I get the dedicated for a little bit more? Willing to spend up to $150.00 monthly. Where should I look for that kind of server? Who has had the experience with something like this? A tip would be nice. Thank you guys JV

I want to build a GODLY system computer and I need advice and for someone to point me in the right direction. I either want to build 4/cpu system or a 8 cpu system with all XEON processors and at least 4 Titan's in SLI. Before all of you jump on me and laugh, keep in mind I am fairly new to system builds and am not an expert at all in this field. First of all I was a little disappointed to hear that windows 10 doesn't natively support more than 2 dual physical processors, so my question is, is there a workaround this issue. I'm thinking that there is some type of hack/modification for the end user to use more than 2 physical processors on windows 10, maybe a program (customized OEM of some sort or maybe a program that someone released) or some type of method to get around this issue. I'm sure (giving all the gaming mods and election hacking by the Russians and all the yahoo hacking) that there is some type of way to turn a windows server 2012 edition into a windows 10 version. My second question is: Do anyone know where I can get CUSTOM built motherboards? The reason why I ask is because I realize that I may run into a problem with ECC memory (depending on the configurations). Also, is it possible to order a CUSTOM built mother board capable of running 4 way SLI Titans (and yes, I heard that Nvidia currently only supports 2 way SLI, but I've heard that you can create profiles/hack/modify) without ECC memory?

Hi guys, I am looking for an upgrade path for my current server. For right now it's serving it's purpose so I am prepared to wait a little longer to upgrade it. Here's what I have. Current Specifications MB - MSI Z77A-GD65 CPU - Intel Core(TM) i7 2600k @ 4.2ghz RAM - 32GB HyperX Fury GPU - MSI GeForce GTX 580 (Used for trans coding) Boot drive - Samsung 850 Evo 250GB (does the job) OS - Windows Server 2016 Datacenter The storage on the other hand is slightly more complicated and is where I would like to see significant improvements. Right now I have 3x 2TB WD Red drives in a RAID 5 using the on board raid controller... but here's where it gets dicey... That array is then combined in software (Using Windows Server File and Storage Services) with another Samsung 850 Evo 250GB in SSD Tiering mode. This is done to improve the read write speeds of the array and I get on average 500MB/s speeds on the array. The aim here is to saturate my network link of 1gbit and the hardware raid on its own was way too slow for me to be satisfied. I know this configuration is by no means ideal and I am very concerned for my data which is why I want t improve on this first and is one area where I would like a lot of advice on what to do and what products will support my needs here. I use this server primarily for storage of most of my data including my very large collection of movies which I host from this server through Plex to all of my many Chromecasts scattered about the house. For now this is doing just fine but storage capacity will need to be expanded in future when I start wanting to consume more 4k UHD content and I will certainly need to have some significant transcoding power if I want to start getting more 4k sources. Aside from it being used as a home media center though, I also use Hyper-V to host some Virtual machines on this system that are primarily used for development purposes... The main guest on this system is a Windows Server Standard 2016 development server used as a RAS (Remote Application Server) with Remote Desktop Services. I run a lot of my development applications through RemoteApp such as Visual Studio 2013/2015/2017 Pro (different versions to meet the requirements of different solutions I work on) I don't have a lot of upfront cash and would like to upgrade bit by bit... starting (I hope) with the storage. I would like to have a high enough storage speed to saturate my network link while still having some redundancy and would like to maintain as much expand ability as possible if I want to add more drives in future (I am satisfied with having to move all of my data off the array before expanding it if that's what is required for me to maintain the current architecture) I have tried software ZFS storage solutions in the past such as FreeNAS and UnRAID but this simply did not meet my windows requirements for running RAS., In addition to this the reliability of simply put... awful. I have so far had near 100% up time with my windows server since I made the move and I am very satisfied. So to cut the rambling short, here are my requirements Storage redundancy that doesn't rely on any one drive High enough storage capacity for a large media collection High enough storage speeds to saturate my network link (preferably 2 times over at 200 - 250MB/s) High CPU clock speed to deal with media encoding and virtualisation High volume of memory to deal with virtualization Some advice wold be very much appreciated. I do ramble a lot and may not have made myself very clear in places so feel free to pick me apart on that point to get any more information that would be useful in helping me, and possibly others, on my quest to create a stable and expandable storage and virtualization server on windows. Hello peeps! I am looking to build a metal shed in my garden to host my few servers and any I build in the future. So really just wanted to ask what you all think of this and any issues you can think may arise from it so I can try to address them before they are issues. Of course, I will ensure that it is waterproof and well vented. I have also been looking at maybe some heat or extra cooling for the summer/winter. So I'm looking for a bit of buying/setup advise, Currently I have an old desktop that's just running some crap on it such as plex, IP cams, ftp server, nas, backup server etc the usual really. This desktop is getting old and clunky and I've always liked the idea of VMs. I have a little experience with Hyper V and kind of know my way around it so I'd like to setup a tower server at home and create a small VM for each of those uses I listed earlier. Now this isn't meant to be some top wack thing I literally want something to tinker with and that is going to function better than a 10 year old desktop machine. So I am working on setting up an RTMP so my friend can stream to it so I can splice my stream with his. Since I could get nginx to work naturally I am using Docker Toolbox, and its using vm to run the server. I finally got it working to where i can stream to it and add it to my steam and look at it. Do i need to do sone port forwarding to allow my friend to stream to it and if so how do i port forward a vm? Plan: He streams to my server I set up his perspective and mine also I stream to youtube gaming he streams to youtube gaming also or i do something to redirect my stream to both channels All help appreciated… --Edit-- this is not on server equipped builds, like a raspberry pi, It is on the same computer I'm streaming on --Edit2-- also or to either reduce latency or make compensation for it

You have always wanted to team with people about servers and learn about them... This is the best place to do it. We will share stuff we know in a group. It is good for server beginners who are beginning with servers so they can get info if they do don know about that tip, hack, tip, or advice with servers.

Ok. So I have a project where I have to create my own company. I decided to go with the same style as Linus Media Group, and make a company that provides entertainment via internet, such as youtube videos and such. But I'm still new to all this, and I need help with picking up all the necessary components for my company. I know that I need a switch, a NAS, 1 or 10 gigabit ethernet, a router for a wireless connection for laptops and such, and propably some UPS units in case of a powerout. What other things I might need to set up a company that has its own storage server in house, and a backup storage off-site? I know this is a lot, but I thought that this might be a good place to get some noob friendly advice.

( like what do they do , what are the specialties of these) -I know you can and sometimes need to hook up a server to a monitor, but how do you have like these enormous server rooms where i just see them stacked up without a single monitor? just fyi: I am still 17 years old and studying IT. Okay so this has been bugging me a while when I was contemplating about this forum and the question is, "Where is the Linus Tech Tips forum even?". So I know where the service is and the web address but what is exactly the physical location of this forum? Is it in house over at the LTT Headquarters or is it hosted by an external hosting servicing like Amazon? If it is then how can they even afford the amount of internet which requires to host this website even and coupled with maintenance and other factors? I know might have been covered by Linus or the crew somewhere in their library of Videos but to be honest i'm a very recent subscriber and I'm very sure the video/s lost somewhere in the vast amount of videos in the channel. So therefore, I'm seeking answers from the people of this big forum.

Hello, I`m doing a Multi-processor server research and was interested in specific more than 2 CPU setup. Additional things would be support for 10Gbps NIC and additional management port. Except Supermicro I didn`t saw any other solutions. At least that would be 2U or 4U units. Has someone got any experience in this field and would like to share knowledge of these kind of servers? Also what kind of CPU would recommend. As i was looking at Xeon E5-4000 series.

Greetings all, I have been the owner of a DELL R900 for about 2 years now. I am also the husband of a very forgiving wife. We have moved to our first home and the R900 has been off for almost 2 months. Unfortunately, my wife has grown accustomed to the lack of a very loud server always on and heard from anywhere in the house. My only real option of maintaining the use of the R900 would be to run it from the basement. The only problem with that location is the moisture, I have clocked that at 70-73%. So this is my question: Is 70% humidity too high to safely and continuously run datacenter grade equipment? What say you, Capt. GingerBeard

Hi, I am looking for a custom gaming server for a community of Arma 3 Mil-sim gamers, 150 of us. We are looking to buy and build our own server however we are looking around for suggestion for what would be the best option for us. Our budget is $10,000, Hosting and management will be taken care of. Requirements: Must be able to host 150-200 people at any one time. Must be able to host a minimum of 4 Arma 3 servers with upto 50 mods on each. Must have at least 1gbit connection Must have redundant power, networking and storage Must have both fast storage (at-least 1TB), backup storage, and 'cold' storage. at-least 64GB ram (faster is better when it comes to ARMA)
