Hi everyone. I'm sorry for asking what is likely to be a very common question, but I've looked through a bunch of threads and couldn't get it to work, so I'm here asking for someone to basically hold my hand through the process I've set up a home server. Got TrueNAS Scale on it (Core did not support my RAID card). Local access is working fine. Now - I'm looking for a solution that does not involve a VPN. I'm looking to mount the storage pool directly to some machines that are all away from where the server is situated. This is a storage vault for non mission critical data, but we'd like regular access to it, as it's where we want to place off-jobsite backups as we are regularly on the road and want to get to the end of the day, do a local backup, then upload it all to the vault. I understand two ways of doing this would be by SMB sharing, WebDAV, or (s)FTP. As long as it works, I have no preference. I would like it to be accessible also through my browser, in case we want to send something in a pinch to a client, but this isn't something I'd necessarily need - can use Drive or Dropbox. Mounting the storage pool directly to the remote machines would be the most necessary part. In the past we used prebuilt NAS and we had an office so it was relatively more simple, as for remote access we could just use the WD or Synology apps. But I'm clearly failing at some point in the process between setting up the share configuration and port forwarding, as every time I've tried to check the port externally I've gotten back that it's not pointing to the correct place. As much as it pains me to say this, security is somewhat secondary, so I'm willing to compromise on that for ease of setup.

Budget (1000$ USD): Country: USA Games, Minecraft. Other details, needs to be power efficient with a powerful cooler (heat is dreadful here) I host a Minecraft server on a Kindle Fire 8 (10th gen) and will need an upgrade SOON I have around 20 clients now, but in the last month we have gained seven new members so seeing as I'm hitting the limits of this custom-cooled tablet (92mm pc fan drawing heat away from the CPU) Here are your requirements (note this Minecraft server is enormous to me and this upgrade is scary so please be kind I'm already facing 2 days of downtime to make this happen) The data this server holds is mission-critical to this server running I run nearly 24/7 and downtime is to be avoided here 500 GB should be acceptable as I run without mods and our world file is at 150MB right now) (redundancy is needed here) AMD or Intel I don't care a bit so long as there's little downtime WIFI is a nice to have as I run locally and need both a wired and wireless connection (for redundancy) ddr4 or ddr5 should work (32 / 64GB ram more is better) I have a battery backup with 1.2kwhs (1200 watt-hours) so that's taken care of! I do have an RX 5500 4GB (non-XT) I could use for a video output I do not run a Realm I run a Minecraft world, and then that world is set to public and people join it it's dead simple and it's set to friends only so I can control who joins that world Hosting through a cloud service is not a option for me

Me and a buddy are starting a server based company but will be more than that down the road. Anyway, we have our server rack and are working on planning for the Minecraft server and this server will be massive. We plan to try and have 50k+ people always playing (This will be WAY down the road). But I need to know what kind of CPU's I should run for the servers, Should I run multiple servers and connect them via Bungee or something else?, Should I run multiple CPU motherboard with multiple servers?, I need way more help because I've been doing a lot of research and reading and constantly seeing different opinions etc. HELP! lol.

Hello Everyone, As of September 8th my main server has been hacked. I live in a house-hold. I run this server for 2 different gaming servers. I am asking for some serious help. I don't know what to do. I have Windows Server 2022 Datacenter(Desktop Experience) installed. I was using PC Manager the free edition from Microsoft. I guess it didn't help because the server got hacked and they changed the Login and I was unable to access my server. I had to actually take the hard drive out and put it into another server as a secondary drive to browse the files on it. Finding in the "Downloads" Directory there were some files downloaded that I never downloaded. It was on September 8th. That is how I know that it got hacked. I am un-sure what Antivirus/Firewall to use. My home desktop uses ESET Smart Security. I would use ESET Server Security but I don't want to pay an arm and leg for their service so I need something open source that is free right now if that is even possible. I have tried to Google my way around to finding a Antivirus/Firewall for my server but I have had no luck. I am also un-sure how the hacker even hacked my server. If anyone might know of a way to figure out how I can check to see how my server got hacked that would be a huge plus as I have been struggling with that as well. Much help is applied right now. Thanks so much, -HomeAdmin247.

Hello, I have a family member that has made one of his rooms set up as a game room. Set up with four Xboxes and small TV's for each. His networking, luckily, is in the same room. I've been the one actually dabbling in networking and server stuff. I have an old Dell OptiPlex that has 3 hard drive slots (1 parity drive), 12 core Xeon E5-2695 v2, 128gb ECC DDR3 with a 2.5gb pcie network port. I plan on using TrueNas and LANCache in a docker container. Is LANCache able to support Xbox games/updates? Is there a possibly better application for this niche project?

Hey! I am playing a bit with a x3550 m2 7946 server I got and for some reason this morning it doesn’t seems to be able to see the drives in the front bays. I was trying to install Debian and the only storage it found was the USB stick I used for installation. Going back to the BIOS, into System settings, there is no Storage option and I can’t seem to find the drives anywhere else. When removing and reinserting the drives, the green LED flashes a bit. Disk 0 also flashes a couple of time while System X is starting but nothing afterwards. Let me know if you get anything from that Thanks!

Hello, this is my first post, I would like to get help in a built used for Storage/NAS/Transcoding Media files: CPU: Threadripper PRO 5995WX Motherboard: Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WIFI II RAM: 8x32GB 3200 DDR4 GPU: 2xRTX4090 OS: Linux OS NVMe: 2x2TB (Maybe Samsung 980PRO not sure yet) to be in Raid1 for redundancy. Media Pool Drives: 100TB (10x10TB HDD enterprise for NAS level) to be configured in Raid 5 for data protection. Extra NVMe or SATA SSD: 2x1TB to be used as cache acceleration (read/write) for all the HDD above. Extra SATA SSD: 2x1TB to be used as cache for general purpose/temp workflow (not associated with any other storage - free use storage). Case: I've found a rackmount case that is good for the build and can host all of the mentioned drives. Network: I will be adding network card maybe Broadcom with 2x10Gb/s ethernet ports. Questions: 1- What kind of Raid/Storage controller would be good for this build? Single Controller or multiple ones? 2- Based on the controller, how do I connect the storage? buy a disk shelf? what is a good choice of that? 3- how do I connect that storage shelf to the server? I am asking because I've read that it is not a good idea to run raid on the motherboard for critical workflow, plus the motherboard does not has enough ports to support all the media. Plus, I would like to maintain the option of future expandability for the storage.

Hello everyone This is my first time building a homeserver. I'm building a server with i9900k and Asus z390-f motherboard(bought them second hand for 250$).corsaircx600 600w 80+ bronze PSU. This Nas is mainly for family use. We already have 1TB of memories(picture and videos). And I want stability and redundancy more than speed. Have decided to go with TrueNas scale as I want to run Minecraft server(also I'm more used to Debian). And maybe some apps in docker. My problems are: 1. I don't know which HDDs to buy.(was gonna go with 2 ironwolf 8TB) but it doesn't sound right. 2. Should I go for a second hand case for this? And what should I be looking for. 3. Also just want to make sure if going TrueNas scale is a good choice? Also is there anything I should keep in mind building the server? I would appreciate getting some advice...

Budget (including currency): 1500$ CAD Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Backup/Gaming-NAS/Storage-NAS Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): Hi, i'm looking into swaping my jank 3 normal pc used as nas with no ethernet switch for a "professional" Grade Server Rack. i already have most the Hardware as for the performence side of thing, but when it come to networking, i'm a complete noob. so i need; -about 1000ft of ethernet cable cat7(for 10gbps) -connectors -keystone -tools needed to install everything -a good 10gbps switch with 5-8 ports i'm from Quebec Canada and all the brands that people recomend on reddit are either only available trough resellers that only sell to other company or i find some on amazon but it look more like a knock off version of the real product than the real thing. so i'm wondering do you know a website that could sell all these thing directly to a customers? do you have any brands to recomend me for all the parts i needs? p.s. the budget is more of an idea than a hard limit, if i need to blow the budget i will lmao p.p.s. picture are there to show some of the hardware i've got already p.p.p.s. when i said "gaming-NAS" in the workload description, this will be a NAS Server on wich i install my steam game. i already have a server doing this for the last 3 years and it's working great(game in 1080p60hz not sure if it could hold up to higher resolution but i don't really care).

Hi all, I have been watching the LTT live stream recently and saw Linus do 6 gamers one CPU and thought about giving something similar ago myself just on a much smaller scale, ie two computers one chassis for a LAN event. The unit I have was used in an industrial setting but they retired it earlier this year and I bought it for cheap to make into a home lab but I haven't the time or knowledge to make it a home lab server but I thought about using it when I go to LAN events. Obviously the idea would be to run a virtual machine off the server and add in some external graphics cards for the display and gpu stuff needed. Does anyone know if one this is even possible with a hp proliant dl380 g7 and two could I run more than one machine if this worked. Thanks

I have an Acer Aspire One 722-C6Ckk notebook running an AMD C60 cpu with 2GB DDR3 Memory. I want to turn it into a home NAS server. But, since this is an x86 architecture cpu, I don't know which NAS OS can run on it. I've only ever use Windows, so i have no idea how to use FreeBSD or Linux based OS. Though I've checked the requirements for TrueNAS CORE and SCALE, they all need a 64 bit cpu and at least 8GB RAM. I don't have any particular OS in mind that I want to run. Anything that can run on my notebook as a server OS is ok with me. I'm not ever sure that if it is even possible to turn my notebook into a NAS! The hardware is more than 10 years old now. Now, if it is possible, which OS can I use to turn this old notebook into a NAS? Also, if I'm able to turn my notebook into a NAS, will Jellybean run on a 32 bit cpu? Or will I have to run PLEX? Thanks.

Hello good people. I recently bought my apartment. Right now I am looking to build a Nas to edit videos directly of of it, Build my own Router/WAP/SWITCH and also get into Smart Home. I have no idea about these things. I want to build something thats future proof and reliable. I would prefer for all of this to be ONE SYSTEM. The DIY part is really important to me in this regard. Any and all advice is appreciated.

Hi, I have an old laptop with Windows 11 that I'm thinking of using as a Plex Server instead of using my Raspberry Pi 4 since I'd get GPU hardware acceleration and its easier to setup network sharing on drives on the former. However the windows laptop tends to turn off and go offline frequently thereby making my plex server unavailable often and I cant teamviewer into it either because it shows up as offline. (Is there a particular version of teamviewer that I should use that might be better when it's on the logon screen?) I'm trying to setup my laptop as a headless PC. Is there something I can do to keep it from restarting randomly and/or something I can do that can ensure it stays up longer. Or is there a way to get Plex Media Server running right as the laptop turns on and it not have to wait for someone to log on to the laptop before it starts running the Plex Media Server and other processes.

My name is Jeremy (Yiru for most people online). I would like to get advise on the following. I want to run the following on it. SQL (with Redis as cache). Minecraft servers (I am making a little network around max 100 people so far). Virtual machines. webserver using nginx/apache2. maybe some other things in the future. 2 idea's I had so far. 1 or 2 servers. (6 cores/server minimum for 2 | 8 minimum if 1 server) using multiple blade servers in an enclosure. What I want advise on. I want advise on what the best option would be. If there are better options I also would like to know. Budget. I could spent a max of 2000 euro on it. I would like it to be not 2000 if possible. (I will keep an open mind on budget if needed) Where to buy. I live in the Netherlands. But cant seem to find good places to buy from. I would love to know if people have good links to those if possible. Software is not an issue. I already have that covered. If any questions just ask. I would love to answer them. Thanks in advance. -Jeremy (Yiru)

Hello everyone, I'm seeking your assistance and advice regarding a data storage solution, and I'd appreciate your input. Here's what I'm looking for: 1. I'm in need of a local storage solution; I'm not considering cloud options like Google Drive or Dropbox. 2. The solution should offer remote access capabilities, as around 80% of the time I'll be accessing the data remotely. 3. I require the solution to provide controlled access permissions to employees. Not all employees should have access to the entire server. I find Google Drive's permission management appealing, where specific project folders can be shared with designated individuals. However, I can't use a cloud-based solution due to the sensitive nature of the data I'll be storing (it's all legal, related to financial data for my clients that I will be auditing). 4. Additionally, I need an activity log feature. In case an employee modifies or deletes a file, I need to be able to track who made the changes and when. I've noticed that my previous company used Google Drive as a means to access the server located within the organization. It seemed like Google Drive acted as an interface. If this approach is feasible, I'd appreciate learning how to set it up. Feel free to use technical words, I might be an auditor, but I do know things in the tech. I'm truly grateful to all participants for investing their valuable time and knowledge. Your help is much appreciated.

Hi, Recently my server is running kinda slow or suffers from crashing/freezing and the network shutdown or stay slow during several using. This isnt frequently but already happened three times in a time of 1 month. This server is used to share files, printers, user control, DNS Server and it runs some programs that are shared through network. Currently using a Dell PowerEdge T330 from 2012 Brief of specs: One socket with: Intel® Xeon® E-1120 v5 @ 3.00 GHz 3.00GHz RAM: 8 GB 2.133 MT/s (single) SO - Windows Server 2012 Standard Storage: 1TB HDD Everything I could do to make the performace better I did, but I think its time to an upgrade. I'm willing to get something with simmilar specs but updated to today standards. Is worth to upgrade to a PowerEdge T150? That would be: One socket with: Intel® Xeon® E-1120 v5 3.00GHz 8M Cache 4 cores/4 threads to → Intel® Xeon® E-2336 2.9 GHz, 12M Cache 6/12 RAM: 8 GB 2.133 MT/s (single) → 8 GB 3200MT/s (single) SO - Windows Server 2012 Standard → Windows Server 2022 Standard Storage: 1TB HDD → 2TB HDD Any other recomendations?

This is a network connection between a PC and a server, so faster the better. Both mobos have 2.5gb ethernet, so my first thought was to buy a 2.5gb switch. Then once seeing the price of the switchs, I realised 2x 10gb NIC's would be cheaper and 4x the speed. Buying a 2.5gb switch which will cost me about $150 I can buy 2x 10gb SFP+ NIC and the optical cable with transeivers for less than the switch So the idea would be that the mobo would bridge to the NIC and supply internet to the other machine. 1. Is this possible? 2. Is there other consideratiions I need to consider?

Hi all- As I have posted about in a couple of other posts, I am planning a build for a home NAS. I just realized I have 32GB of DDR4 2133 MHz sitting around and I was wondering if it would be fast enough for that processor. (The Intel i5 9600 NON-K variant) If not I can always just get new memory, I just wanted to know since I already had that sitting around if I could use it. I am planning to use TrueNAS Scale.
