Hi, so I've been running a Debian Server at home since 2022. It was running stable until 4 months ago. Since then it crashes once or even twice a week. I mean it really crashes hard to the point it has to reboot itself. The logs don't show anything. Memtest came back with no errors, so the RAM seems fine. I am going to switch out the powersupply next. Here some specs about the server: Mainboard: MSI H510I PRO WIFI Mainboard Mini-ITX CPU: Intel Core i5-11600 RAM 64GB: Mushkin Wave - D464GB 2800-17 Redline FB G3 K2 MSK PSU: Seasonic Prime Fanless PX-500 HDD: 2 x Toshiba MG09ACA18TE SSD: Samsung SSD 980 PRO 1TB NIC: MellanoxConnectX-3 Cooling (CPU): be quiet! Dark Rock TopFlow 2 BK031 Fans: 4 x Noctua (2x 80mm + 2x140mm) In my next attempt to narrow down the cause I will install a new PSU: Seasonic Prime 650W Ultra 80 Plus Titanium Full Modular On my server I am running some apllications as well all in docker containers: Jellyfin AMP (for game servers) Nginx-Proxy-Manager There is also a cronjob running every minute to update my DNS-Entry in case my IP changes since I don't have a fixed IP address. If you need further information, logs or else please just ask. I use a homebuilt UnRaid server as a file storage and media streaming server. I have around 14TB of Blu Rays and DVDs stored on a JBOD with 1 drive of parity (made up of 4TB and 8TB HDDs [I think they're WD Reds], about 24TB total capacity). The 4TB drives are all 2-3TB full. Lately, I've noticed that the Finder window takes about 10-15 seconds to load all of the icons when I open the Movie folder. Similarly, playback is stuttering when both playing the file directly via VLC (Plex not functional due to Comcast modem IP passthrough issues). Similarly, 1-2 threads/cores show higher loads during playback, but the eth0 connection doesn't appear to saturate the 1 Gbps ethernet connection I use. I attempted to add a 2TB NVME cache drive, but it doesn't appear to do anything. I do rip using Make MKV at full quality (~40GB for Blu Ray, ~24GB for the main movie file) instead of pulling a compressed version. I did also build it about 6 years ago (May 2018) and have not touched it since apart from adding 2 more HDDs and the NVME drive so it's not exactly new. Looking for a potential solution to upgrade the server to make playback smoother/Finder display faster if anyone has a solution. Not sure if it could be processor related, drive fill or speed related, OS related, etc. Specs (not currently IVO the server, so from memory): CPU: i5-8400 RAM: 16GB DDR4 GPU: N/A Storage: WD Reds or Red Pros at 4TB and 6 or 8TB, 2TB Samsung 900 something cache drive OS: UnRaid Ethernet: 1 Gbps Should I upgrade to a more recent processor, swap to SSDs, use a different OS, add a GPU? Not sure where to go next and looking for any assistance that can be provided.

https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/X570M Pro4/ Currently in the process of building a server/NAS and after days upon upon days of searching for a decent motherboard I have came across the Asrock X570M Pro 4. Has all the specs I'm looking for, 8 SATA ports, 2 PCIe 4.0 X 16 slots, 2 hyper M.2 ports etc. I have read that it had a shaky release with some issues in relation to fan control. But it is quite old now and is still getting BIOS updates (as recent as January 2024) Was wondering has anyone used this board for a NAS/Server setup, all information is greatly appreciated!

I am setting up port forwarding on my router for a Minecraft server and having trouble getting it working. I will attach a photo of how I have it setup. basically I give the ip address to my friend to see if he can join but he can't. I can join from my local network, but that still doesn't mean the port forwarding is setup correctly. any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I bought this CPU about 2 years ago, and bought a cheap LGA2011 motherboard. The CPU did not fit so it has just been on a shelf for 2 years. CPU is a 12 core 2.60GHz Xeon E7-4860V2

Kind of a simple question but not really. I have a 2U server in my basement with datacenter 2k22 on it, has a bunch of roles and its in a forest with a few old laptops. nothing "too" special about those machines, just backups for the domain, ADDS (active directory) and crucial/barebones "helpers" for the server. anyway so i got a bunch of stuff that can go into cold storage but obviously i dont wanna pay or use external services. simple reasons for this, potential cyber-incidents with X company, but most of all human error. say for example i setup autopay and i lose my card then forget, well my failsafe data storage is in limbo. given my email is packed with junk most of the time it would be something easily overlooked. maybe the data side on the server would be helpful -16x pcie 4.0 nvme uh, thing. has 4 nvmes in it all kingston fury's at 1tb on raid 1, bitrification or whatever -8x SAS drives, raid 10 all HDDs, seagate constellations, id like to say 4-8tb each? of course the capacities of all and models are the same. disk manager says 14g and some odd megs, so im thinking 4tb each -boot drive is irrelevent, but its a intel something enterprise ssd, guessing prob 128g or less, its on SATA -id like to say at least 4 samsung pro/qvo SSDs at 1tb each, raid 0, just used as temp storage then i shovel copies to other "drives" -a simple 4tb usb3 drive, seagate HDD -another simple 14tb HDD via usb3, that ones a 3.5 inch drive and only one, western digital all this junk are linked to the other pc's, network mapping whatever. nothing special. i deff dont wanna (or do i?) use msft storage spaces role, i forget what its called. basicallly it takes the free space of my other laptops/DC's and combines the drives. all that would mean is if one goes down on the network then poof. prob better off network mapping the laptops multiple drives independently per machine, one has 3, another 4, raid isnt setup yet but thats not a concern at the moment. all samsung 1tb evo/qvo drives. the slowest machine is still rocking a HDD, only a 2 core cpu so not much bother throwing money or anything at it. SO with all this stuff, any ideas for cold storage? apparently bit rot is a real thing so yeah. apparently making dvd-r backups have issues too - even if kept safe without scratches, bit rot yet again. debating on investing in one of those tape deck things, slow but often used for cold storage. but then the magnetic reel is always prone to "something" only reason for the inquiry is because duh we live in a digital world. isnt like going in the basement and busting out a shoebox full of photos is practical these days. my phone alone has ~72,000 photos on it. say i die in a car crash or something at least my daughter would figure out how to access pictures of her birth and my entire life prior and current. of course a crapload of movies, music and games too. man what was that film? oh lets check dads backup cache cause thats where it would be. cant find it online anymore. same goes with games, even after a while i check my stuff and say DAMN i forgot about this one! boom, now im playing Kingpin or Soldier of Fortune. im only 36 but who knows right? should something happen, my lifetimes worth of data could be passed on to my child. its a worthwhile thought, right? any ideas out there? id "burn" vinyl records with .rar files if i could, aside from warping at least it isnt magnetic storage...?

Hi all, I am looking to build a NAS/Home server and need some help. I was originally looking at N100 CPUs but was uncertain if it would be powerful enough for my uses. I want to achieve the following: Backup for video production projects and my own personal photos. Would be a bonus to be able to work off of the NAS while editing. Will be using all SSDs Possibly the use of a Plex server Some other server related stuff such as: Ubiquiti cloud key PiHole VPN Home automation I am currently thinking of getting the following pieces for the build: SilverStone Technology CS351 Asrock B550M Pro WD Red Sata drives (maybe starting off with about 4TB and hoping to expand in the future) I just recently upgraded my PC and was wondering would my old hardware be a possible choice to use, I have a Ryzen 5 3600 and a RTX 2060. I understand that these may be extremely overkill for the applications stated above but I was thinking, if possible, I could undervolt the GPU but i'm unsure if it is possible on Linux. All input would be greatly appreciated!

I am currently setting up my own server using UBUNTU 18.04.6 LTS. I have been able to connect to it via my laptop using Putty and set up the necessary directories for a minecraft server. However, I have been unable to transfer files using Filezilla or WinSCP; it comes up with an error: permission denied. I have entered all the credentials and login in the SCP tool and SSH is up and running on the Ubuntu server. I've tried looking at fixes but I haven't found anything that works. Does anyone have any ideas or a way to troubleshoot furthur? I would really appreciate the help. PC: Windows 10 Asus TUF laptop Server: Linux UBUNTU 18.04.6 LTS. So, I am working on a server build at work. We purchased 3 ProLiant servers with standard riser chassis. However we needed more then a single PCI express riser, so we purchased the additional riser kits to add 2 more PCI express slots into our primary riser. We are only running 1 CPU at 128 PCI express lanes(plenty for what we need). Where I am neeeing help is the cabling within the chassis. We are able to get the first additional riser (blue cabling) to work in the chassis it is plugged into ports 7 & 13 ref attached images. However when we try to add the third riser (top riser with yellow cabling) into the server, we keep getting a “Improper Cable Order in Slot 1 or 2 error”. I was just hoping someone more knowledgeable could help explain HPEs weird new changes in gen 11 with these new NVME/ PCI express ports and which ports I should be plugging into with a single CPU configuration.

Budget (including currency): $1,300 Country: USA Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: AI-Machine learning Other details Build a solid reliable platform to learn Machine learning programs. LLMs, Image and video generators etc. I am building a budget server to run AI and I have no experience running AI software. I'm thinking starting with Llama LLM, but would like to get into making AI pictures and videos as well plus who knows what else once I learn more about this. I am just getting into this and have not received the hardware yet but it is ordered. I'm just gathering information so I know how to get started when it gets here. System specs: Dual E5 2686 V4 (32 cores, 72 threads total) 128GB ECC RAM 2TB Gen 4 NVME SSD (didn't order, already on hand. Not included in budget) (4) 1TB SATA SSDs in RAID 0 (didn't order, already on hand. Not included in budget) (4) Tesla P40 24Gb cards (uses the GP102 chip, same as the Titan XP and 1080TI) I'm planning to run this headless and remote into it. This is just for tinkering at home and I'm not worried if it isn't the fastest system in the world. What would be the best OS? What drivers are the best to use with the Tesla P40 cards? Any other thoughts on this setup, or suggestions? Do I need to use NV link on the cards in order to use all the VRAM? I am thinking of using bifurcation and running each card on 8 PCIE gen 3 lanes, Do you think that would cause a bottleneck?

Lately I've been running my nodded server on some old hardware and I've been wondering about upgrading my server. Current hardware is a intel i7-3770 (non k) with 32GB of ram and a SSD. Runs fine most of the time. But there is definitely room for improvement. Anyone know of any solid setups that I could build to be able to run my server with no performance issues? I've seen that minecraft is a single thread game so would it be best to get a single core Intel cpu with a high clock speed? I'm not sure here.

Hey guys! This is my first time on the forum so forgive me if I put this in the wrong place. Basically I am a photographer videographer and I used to just do file management on my one custom built pc that had a 1tb nvme ssd and a 4tb hdd to the back for archival storage, however 2 things happened over the past 3 ish years. 1, I have since purchased a second computer, a laptop, a macbook, an ipad, and inherited an old prebuilt dell from a relative. )The macbook and 2nd computer have been added more recently, so I havent needed a purpose to purchase a new nas to run my storage off of, as the one computer sufficed and then any projects I would upload to my google drive. As time has gone on, Ive thought about taking the sleeping machine back on another few trips around the sun while in high school to manage my files. I currently opperate a wix webpage for my photography, but I would like to be able to use the feature of connecting over the internet to the wix webpage. (I have a little bit of experience with java so I can figure out some way for the data to access an application on the computer eventually) but in the meantime it would be nice to just have the portable access to where if Im on my home network I can port into that computer and have it upload and download files as needed, so after a big photography trip I can upload all my photos from my mac while upstairs and then sort through them at a later date. Looking into it, I found a few different options for me. I could purchase a new 4-drive g-technology for myself and connect that to my computer, or I can (for much cheaper) purchase a drive bay with some p-cie - sata adapters and connect the bay to the board that way. It wouldnt be able to run raid, but honestly other than the main hard drive that the computer boots off of its all going to be archival storage with not much going on there. Either way, I would like to just have this setup in my basement off my desk constantly running to where all I would need to have is a monitor so I can watch as my files are preserved for however long the ssd's last. Either way. Im looking for sudgestions on how you would run this system. Is there an application that could be cheap or free that either boots on linux or windows that I can then turn into my controller for the drives, or is there some service (Like google drive) that I can pay a few bucks a year for the software to local host my data. I can follow up with photos once I am at my house after school today (Gotta love the college experience) Any help is greatly appreciated. I would like to quickly mention that yes, I have watched linus's videos on turning your old pc into a server, but most of them are from a few years back and the companies that (potentially) were free back then have started charging an arm and a leg for their software, that is subscription based. Amazon links to what I would purchase if I were to build my own enclosure: Rack Drive Bays Sata Port Potential 1 Sata Port Potential 2 Sata Port Potential 3

I have a 300GB VHDX file that I need to transfer and convert to a new ProxMox server, that has default installation settings. The issues I am running into: 1. The local directory is max 240Gb and I need to know how to transfer the file that's 300GB (whatever that looks like) to the ProxMox server. 2. LVM storage and why I can't use it to store files 3. Creating a VM within ProxMopx with that converted Vhdx file I NEED YOU TO TALK TO ME LIKE I'M A DUMMY, I'M VERY NEW TO THIS. I keep running into people saying things like "just allocate a new file system with CMD" but not explaine how to do it. Thanks for any help! The server has a 1TB drive in it

We purchased a new Dell PowerEdge R250 server for one of our business customers. In that new server is a 1TB SSD with no OS installed. They currently own a 10+ year old Dell PowerEdge T320 with Windows Server 2019 Essentials installed and activated. We have created a Virtual Hard Disk using Disk2vhd and ultimately want to spin up that VM on the hard drive in the new server. What kind of host OS needs to be installed to run the VHD made from the previous server's hard drive? Can it be activated with the same license key as the guest OS (the one activated in the VHD that was created from the previous server's hard drive)? If not, and we only get to migrate the activation key from the previous server's hard drive to be used in the guest OS on the new hard drive, does that mean we have to pay for another activation key for the host OS on the new hard drive?

I'm in the process of buying parts for my unRAID build which will run Plex. This is my build. It's my first time building a PC and all is straightforward to me except choosing the PSU. I need help finding the right one that will support at least 8 SATA HDDs for expandability. Such a system doesn't require more than 500w-550w. What confuses me is the SATA power connector having multiple connectors on it. I think this is called daisy chaining and I'm wondering if there will be sufficient amount of power to connect say 4 drives on one strip. Wouldn't I need 1 strip per HDD? I don't think such a power supply exists. I don't really know how to express my concern in a different way but in a nutshell, I have no clue what I'm doing when selecting the right PSU and I need some help choosing one that will be able to power all my components (1 HDD for now in my build but expanding slowly to 8 or more drives through time). On PcPartPicker I was selecting the filter for the number of SATA connectors I need, at least 8 connectors. Not sure if that's the correct approach.

Hi LTT forum. I recently bought a FUJITSU PRIMERGY RX2520 M1 (12 FRONT LFF Bay) to upgrade my existing NAS that currently run TRUENAS Scale 23 but with consumer hardware from an old PC I had lying around. After my purchase I upgraded the server with a second CPU (XEON E5-2420 v2), 48GB of ECC REGISTERED RAM and 8 18TB Seagate Exos X18 Enterprise drives. After that upgrade I tried to install TRUENAS on a dual SSD connected to my hot swappable bay at the front. I can go through the whole process of installation and after the reboot needed, I can see in the BIOS my two boot entries TRUENAS-0 and TRUENAS-1 but none of them let me exit the bios. My first though did goes to the RAID card installed by default, I switched the RAID card by 2 LSI 9300-8I in IT Mode with no success. I tried other OS with no luck at the moment: - Ubuntu server 16 - Ubuntu server 23 - Proxmox VE 8.1 - openSUSE - Windows 10 - Truenas SCALE 23.10.1.3 I'm at the limit of my knowledge right now. Does anyone have any idea? Video of the problem:

Hello LTT forums, I live in France and I'm sharing with this community a project that was proposed by multiple "intervenants" (people who teach us subjects at school) to us who are in a apprenticeship school Our current state in IT infrastructure is limited, meaning only the basics are given to us (access to internet, power and school outlook) The direction has approved of this project with others of the head of our school to engange to deploy a IT infrastructure for our needs in education Since most of us are students, and we learn computer technology, we have to bring our own laptops capable to do emulation (vmware workstation, cisco packet tracer & more) Some of our tutors have been happily discarding their old IT equipement to this project (dell / HPE servers, cisco switches, etc) instead of recycling them or throwing them away. We already have an agreement where we can install a 25u rack with the servers given to us, We would like to host a primary vsphere server that would be for administration, and two secondary ones for the students and teachers to access remotely This would enable the "intervenants" / teachers to prepare in advance courses for classes on subjects of virtualisation or networking, and would also enable us students to connect on the network to discover the technology What would you recommend?

Hi all! So I noticed a few weeks ago that my home network would “crash” occasionally whenever I would try to stream content via Plex on my local network. My client is a 2nd Gen AppleTV 4K. One behavior was: After starting playback, the content would load, but shortly after my server and home network would go offline. All devices would loose connection until my router came back online. The routers would not “reboot” per se, at least according to the status LEDs, but they completely lost connection. Another behavior was: Playback would start fine, but usually after a few minutes, playback would stutter and a “your connection to the server is not fast enough” message would appear. Sometimes it would stabilize, other times it would just lag and crash the network again. Server: 2018 Mac mini running Plex Media Server v.1.87.2.87-87488d5a Router: 2x Linksys Velop MX4200 Anyway, the solution seems to have been to ENABLE “Priority By Device” in my Linksys Smart Wifi App. Assigning my server to the priority list seems to have completely stabilized my network. I watched Oppenheimer (4K @ ~45Mbps), an episode of Bobs Burgers, and am currently watching South Park while typing this. The network appears completely stable. tldr: If you have a Linksys router and your network is crashing when watching Plex, add your server to the “Priority By Device” list in your Linksys Smart Wifi App.

I have been trying FOR DAYS to get a home server up and running using the godawful ISP-provided ZTE F670L (Datasheet PDF Link). Not only that but the dashboard (or control panel) has so many spelling mistakes, sentences that make no sense at all, Wi-Fi devices cannot communicate with devices on LAN, etc. Since I live in Egypt, I cannot get another router/modem that supports a fibre cable (GPON). I thought about getting a new router/modem, connecting that to my ISP-provided piece of garbage, and using the better product to manage the network. The problem is, I am pretty new to all of this, and I did my research and narrowed my options to either the Archer C86 AC1900 or the Archer VR2100 AC2100, both from TP-Link (which I assume is a trusted manufacturer). Which of these options is better for my situation, and how can I connect the two devices (my ISP garbage and the new device) to achieve what I want? I would be very grateful if any of you wizards out there could help. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I'm kind of in an uncomfortable situation. I need some dedicated help in getting Home Assistant, Unraid, and PiHole up and running. read on for more details. I wanted to have a Home Assistant setup for my workshop. I didn’t know it at the time, but that’s what I needed. Through a series of conversations (and roughly $700 later) I had enough equipment to set up an Unraid server, and have two tablet computers to run my home assistant (inside unraid) and two dashboards. They're just sitting in my home office doing nothing. The person who recommended all this equipment to me was willing to help me get everything up and running, but he had a personal emergency and now isn't able to help me complete the setup. I'm super-duper green when it comes to this kind of stuff... so much so that I'm finding it hard to follow tutorials, as they seem to require a base level of understanding I don't have. I'm fairly technical, but most of my computer knowledge revolves around tinkering in the files system. I just don't have the grid for networking and custom computing. This leaves me with a server that I somehow managed to get up and running properly (I think) and a home assistant VM that, while technically might also be installed correctly, I have no idea how to integrate all my devices (cameras, lights, air monitors, outlets, 3d printer). I was also trying to get Pi-Hole up and running as a VM as well tonight, but literally 1 minute into the video I was already lost. So the good news: Most of this is ready to go, I just need help in figuring out...... how to use it, I think. Pi-Hole is the only thing that hasn't been started yet. Mods: If this is the wrong place to post this, my sincerest apologies. I'd love a tip on where to go to get assistance if the post has to come down.

Hello, LTT Forum Community! I'm on the brink of embarking on an exciting project to set up a home server and would greatly appreciate your collective expertise to guide me through some decisions. Given the constraints of apartment living, where space is at a premium and modifications to the property are off-limits, I'm leaning towards a compact yet powerful setup. My vision includes a small form factor PC discreetly placed under my TV cabinet, complemented by a hard drive enclosure for NAS purposes. Here's what I aim to achieve with my server: Implement ad-blocking using Pi-hole or a similar service. Support at least four simultaneous video streams on Plex. Run a VPN server, specifically something along the lines of Vmess/Vless. Facilitate occasional light gaming on my TV, including Switch emulation and party games. Hosting my website(s). Explore additional services, such as smart home integrations. Potential Hardware Configuration: PC Option: Minisforum UM790 Pro 7940HS Mini PC. Storage Solution: Ugreen 5 Bay RAID Enclosure USB-C to SATA HDD SSD – UGREEN. Hard Drives: 3 or 4 Seagate Iron Wolf 8TB drives, contemplating RAID 5 or RAID 6 setup. I saw a video telling me to leave a bay or two empty for future expansions. Key Questions: RAID Configuration: Given the built-in RAID support of the Ugreen enclosure, should I opt for hardware RAID or would software RAID be more reliable? I'm concerned about the potential for data loss if the RAID controller fails, and I've read mixed opinions on the resilience of software RAID in such scenarios. PC Choice: Should I go with the Minisforum PC, or would building a custom ITX PC be a better route? Having previously built a mATX PC, I'm a bit hesitant about navigating the intricacies of a smaller ITX build. Alternatively, are there other solutions I should consider? Budget-wise, I'm aiming for a balance between cost-effectiveness and meeting my project's requirements. I'm open to investing in quality components that provide value without being excessively pricey. I'm eager to hear your thoughts, recommendations, and any personal experiences that could help steer this project toward success. Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for any advice you can provide!

Hey Everyone, I recently bought a M3 pro Macbook pro for video editing and now I want use my old laptop (Asus ROG GL502 VM core i7-6700HQ with GTX 970m) as a NAS. I am completely new to this topic so here are some things that I can not figure out. 1 - I have around 5 external HDDs. is USB connection enogh for the speed? 2 - I want to be able to read and write files from my macbook, Do I have to format them all and lose current files on them? 3 - I want to be able to access them both in my house and remotely. but in house I want to be able to access the files more directly. what is the best solotion? 4 - I know I am missing alot of things so I would appreciate If you could help me out with it.

I'm new to servers, so I'm looking for recommendations that would fulfill my purposes. I'm trying to use the NAS for file storage, virtualizing OSs, and hosting a media server like Plex. I was thinking of getting a 4-bay server and filling 2 slots with 16TB 7200RPM drives so I have both adequate size and future upgradeability. It's also not required, but being able to have an NVMe drive as a cache would definitely be nice. I have heard that the DS923+ is a solid option but If anybody knows of any systems as well as drive options that would work well for my purposes i'd appreciate the advice.
