Hello, Long time viewer, seldom poster. I was very inspired by Linus’ home desktop in a server cabinet. My SO and I thought it would be a great way to consolidate our gaming builds and network equipment. I’ve been looking into 4U sized server chassis for a gaming computer. I know Linus had his specially made so I wasn’t sure what would be a cheaper pre-fabricated option. I was looking at some from iStarUSA (around $200 which seems reasonable). I was wondering if anyone could lend some advice regarding building in a server chassis and what size works best (4U?). I’ve been looking at a 22U sized server cabinet. My biggest concern which Linus mentioned too is the cord pass through. I have a basement closet that I’d like to keep the server rack in and route the cables to the other room for Monitor and peripherals. It seems Thunderbolt 3 maybe the best option and use a thunderbolt dock (even though the docks are pricey). How long can a thunderbolt 3 cable be? Should I just get a longer DisplayPort Cable? I’m thinking I may need at least 2 meters and possibly more for a 2nd setup a little farther away. I have a 1440p 144Hz monitor and it theoretically looks like it should run off TB3. Hello, I am starting to move my networking to a server rack in my semi attic (Semi Attic means that its in the attic but it is closed off and insulated). I want to know if it is ok if I put A enclosed server rack into the semi attic with the server rack having a fan built in it. Where I live, the temperature is A average of 75°F (23.9°C) to 80°F (26.7°C) in the highs, and the 51°F (10.6°C) to 61°F (16.1°C) in the lows. All I am having in the server room is a EdgeRouter 10x and a EdgeSwitch 10x, soon 1-2 SuperLogics servers, and a small rack mount Synology Nas. The temperature of all of the servers meet the temperature requirement. I just want to know if there is anything that I need to do that will make the servers run smoother. I’m going to be getting quite a bit of new equipment in the next week and I’m just wondering if there are any sort of cheaper sound deduction tips out there. Like sound cancellation foam on the walls, not too expensive specialty fans, that kind of thing. [+] My cabinet is 24u 19", and has a depth of 1005cm. So I'm going to water cool every server(4) and nas(2) inside my 24u rack (with 6 network switches) then combine the outputs (the hot stuff) to one tube using t splits and dump all the heat to the 4 triple rads mounted on my window, then sent the input (the cold stuff) to serval t splits back into the servers and nas's(each server and nas has its own reservoir. So any questions or suggestions? Also I do realize that this sounds like the whole room water cooling project that Linus did a couple years ago.

Hi guys! So i've built my first server a couple of months ago and am now thinking about buying a server rack for it. Right now I only have a 4U server but I know that later I'll put some more in it, like a pfsense router, maybe some things for home automation and stuff like that but that's for the future. What I'm hoping here are some pointers for buying my first rack. Things I need to look out for, what is important and what is not so,... A question I had was about the widths of racks. I've found a couple of racks with different widths. Do the bigger ones just have more space left on the sides or are there differences in width in rack equipement? Thanks!

Hey guys, I just built a home server and threw it into a mid tower desktop case I had lying around. I’m wanting to rack mount it, though, along with a network switch and potentially add up to two or three more over the next couple years. I’ll live in an apartment with my wife, so I’ll want it to be relatively mobile (aka not bolted to the floor or wall mounted and possibly wheels) and I’ll want it to be as cheap as possible. Would I be better off building myself something out of some wood/steel/aluminum or buying a real server rack? I also am wanting to use my current ATX power supply, so potentially use a 4U case for this current build, but I’m not opposed to using smaller form factors in the future. What kind of trade-offs would I be making if I build my own rack instead of buying? And is there any noise/performance benefit to using a different size case? Thanks!!

Hey guys, So I bought myself a 15U Navepoint 450mm rack cabinet to house all of my equipment as I'm entering the realm of rack mountable devices. Just got the UDM-Pro for it which is great along with my Synology DS1819+. Long story short, things are starting to get a bit toasty. I mean I can't even close the cabinet door. Granted this comes with one exhaust fan on top. So I bought a couple of AC Infinity Rack Roof exhaust fans to try and help as well as this cheap 1U fan to get some more airflow. Everything appears to work, but man is that fan loud! It would be nice to throw some noctua fans in as a replacement, but I believe it's 120v though I don't know (haven't opened it up yet). I've seen (if it is 120v) that I can likely get a 120v plug to molex connector and then a molex to 4x 3/4 pin connectors to try to get it to work. I guess the question is, is this the best route? Am I missing something obvious instead? I'm trying to keep the budget down obviously (as I've spent enough lately) and am somewhat limited. Additionally, I have concerns that the db trade-off will substantially impact the cooling capability. I have been digging into CFM vs m³/h and seem to have a rough grasp on airflow vs. static pressure but not enough to determine which will favor me better vs what I actually need. Anyone have any thoughts or how to complete this or just a better alternative? Ultimately i'd like to keep things cool as well as keep the noise down as it is in my bedroom closet and it is a bit noisy. Also, I have the top exhaust going though flex duct lines into the attic to minimize sucking in hot air.

I am looking to change out my current server configuration. I plan to put in 24U + of servers over the next year and a bit. I was looking around the data center at a local place from outside the glass doors (sadly) and I see they have some nice APC units. They are steel mesh on the front then have turning lock handles that pop in and out. I don't know the model but was thinking something like that unless for some reason they are 1.5k CAD or more in which case, would a simple 42U 4 post work fine? I want to mount rails for servers and some switches on racks ears. I have never had a proper rack, just had everything sit in a homemade wooden one that is a pain to look at and work with since each change can take up to a day per server/appliance due to the weird way I built it needing mods each time. Suggestions on affordable solutions for me? I want decent enough to not curse it but doesn't need to be top of the line. Suggestions on PDU's would be welcome too.

Hi everyone! I own a photography studio and we started redecorating lately, so I have been thinking about moving my servers from a random room in the house to my office, which should improve a few things on my workflow. Long story short, to match the design of the studio I decided to use a piece of furniture as the rack, instead of my default black frame ugly looking thing. But I have doubts about airflow and heat dissipation. This is the furniture my wife and I have in mind for the office, except for the door, which will be removed: https://i.imgur.com/QB2rVU4.jpg I will get a friend's company to build me a few U4 cases to cover the servers, two editing servers running Vega 64 in crossfire plus a Threadripper 1950X each, plus four storage servers running Ryzen 3 and a network switch. AMD hardware is not known for being cold, so you get why heat is a concern here. As I live in a city with good weather (20C in average), I believe that will be enough to handle everything. I think the case fans will take care of everything, but I prefer to have more just in case. Maybe have the fan enclosure on the bottom, with holes in the case for the hot air to come out?
