hey guys! i was watching scrapyard wars of old and had the sad realization that with the steam deck being not only a consumer viable option but probably the best option for budget pc gaming. and now with the rog ally on the horizon, what is the better option at $400, $500, $600, $700? base "system" -> base system + 1tb "upgrade" (or equivalent upgrade in budget). and i have some interesting results. DISCLAIMER! i am in no way a tech guru of any kind. i do favor amd products, though i try to be fair and go with fps/dollar. fuck Nvidia. most of my choice are based on research (google) and i dont have any hardware to test. i will be assuming mouse, keyboard, controller, tv/monitor will already be provided in some way. 1. $400 all new PC https://pcpartpicker.com/list/H73G78 okay this parts list had to be kinda cut throat. cpu- AMD Ryzen 3 4100 3.8 GHz Quad-Core Processor MB- ASRock A520M-HDV Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ram- Samsung Green 8 GB (1 x 8 GB) DDR4-2133 CL15 Memory storage- TEAMGROUP AX2 512 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive gpu- Sapphire PULSE Radeon RX 6500 XT 4 GB Video Card case- DIYPC F2 MicroATX Mini Tower Case psu- Thermaltake Smart 500 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply with this pc coming in at just under the $400 (at time of writing) im both happy and disapointed. the r3 4100 is an already aging quad-core that wont be much more than a paper weight in about a year with AAA gaming. rx6500xt looks to be a 1060 6gb equivalent (maybe? i dont have the physical cards to test), again not a stand out for coming AAA titles. the motherboard does not have wifi or bluetooth so wires tangle. i hate only having a single stick of ram, and on top of that its 8gb 2133. i could have done a single 16gb 3200 stick but that would have taken the budget to 403.92, for this excerise i decided if i was buiding a pc at this budget that would mean i didnt have a cent too spare. now for some positives, the teamgroup ssd is a great buy that follow an upgrade path for many years to come. the case is peferctly suitable for many budgets. and the power supply has both qualites, though a 80+ bronze would have been more favorable. conclusion? $400 is not enough with last gen consoles, current gen consoles, and other options in this post i cant see a reason to even try with this budget or parts list. do not buy. 2. 399.99 Steam Deck https://store.steampowered.com/cart as basic as it gets, not much to say here. CPU: Zen 2 4c/8t, 2.4-3.5GHz (up to 448 GFlops FP32) GPU: 8 RDNA 2 CUs, 1.0-1.6GHz (up to 1.6 TFlops FP32) RAM: 16 GB LPDDR5 on-board RAM STORAGE: 64 GB eMMC okay there is alot to unpack here. 64gb is not enough storage, you could maybe get one AAA title but it would be an older one. APU is already seeing its performance ceiling. future AAA gaming will tough unless developers make ports targeting the steam deck hardware. not impossible but not likely. there is no upgrade to the gpu, cpu, apu, however whatever. this system is as good as it gets outside of software support. now for the positives! its a fucking steam deck! the most portable pc of all time. the console to do your taxes on. this is probably the best emulation machine. steamos is a huge selling point. emudeck makes emulating almost anything! switch titles are very popular as well as gamecube, ps3, snes, n64, ps2, etc. now getting the software is not part this discussion and the rule remains; dont pirate and dont get caught. conclusion? $400 for the steam deck is an excellent buy but limiting. desktop mode will be a learning curve to use with built in controls. the 64gb will need additional storage via sd card and of course i would reccomend looking into a usb type-c dock. but outta the box it is a good buy. 3. $500 all new PC https://pcpartpicker.com/list/87rQTn this is the new starter budget, some parts remain from the $400 list but now we have a respectable pc. cpu- AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor MB- Gigabyte B450M DS3H WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ram- Silicon Power SP016GBLFU320B22 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL22 Memory storage- TEAMGROUP AX2 512 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive gpu- Gigabyte EAGLE Radeon RX 6600 8 GB Video Card case- DIYPC F2 MicroATX Mini Tower Case psu- Thermaltake Smart 500 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply with this pc coming in at just under the $500 (at time of writing) im very happy with the list. bumping the cpu 6cores 12 threads is a big upgrade. the rx6600 is great budget card at the moment. 16gb of 3200 ddr4 is again a great upgrade and as ive said before the ssd, psu, and case are the same. and now we have wifi! allowing you to set this up anyway you have signal. this setup should allow you to run almost any AAA game from the past few years with some (or alot) concessions. lowering settings, resolution, etc; but that doesnt mean it will be playable. emulation should a home run. the only thing i wish i couldve upgraded/added was more storage. conclusion? if you have the budget and peripherals (mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc) this is a good buy to get started with pc gaming. 4. $500 steam deck budget https://store.steampowered.com/cart again i reccomend the base model with some add comforts Type-C Dock: https://www.amazon.com/JSAUX-Compatible-Ethernet-Charging-Deck-HB0603/dp/B0B7HVZNMB/ref=sr_1_22?crid=1IFASXGAVQBBN&keywords=usb+type+c+steam+deck&qid=1685568067&s=electronics&sprefix=usb+type+c+steam+deck%2Celectronics%2C170&sr=1-22 MICO-SD-CARD: https://www.amazon.com/PNY-Elite-MicroSD-Card-P-SDUX512U3100PRO-GE/dp/B07KD4XJLX/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=micro+sd+card&qid=1685568196&refinements=p_n_feature_two_browse-bin%3A13203835011&rnid=6518301011&s=pc&sprefix=micro%2Celectronics%2C219&sr=1-8 alright this a quick and easy upgrade, a type-c dock will make everything easier and allow you to use the steam deck as proper pc. and the micro sd card just opens you game library. the given examples are around $50 each but you could just buy a 1tb sd card and go from there. conclusion? this is a much better experience, but you are still on the same hardware. you will be trading horse power for portablity compared to the $500 PC. but if you are a student or live in a small apartment the steam is still a great option that doesnt need much more than what comes stock. i have a hard time reccomending the steam deck at this price point if you want a "gaming Pc" but if you want a badass handheld with pc games its a no brainer get this! 5. $600 all new PC https://pcpartpicker.com/list/BzfLhk this is such a non-upgrade it hurts. cpu-AMD Ryzen 5 5500 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor MB-Gigabyte B450M DS3H WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ram-Silicon Power SP016GBLFU320B22 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL22 Memory storage-TEAMGROUP AX2 512 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Seagate ST4000NM0024 4 TB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive gpu-Gigabyte EAGLE Radeon RX 6600 8 GB Video Card case- psu-Corsair CX650M (2021) 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply i hate this list, the only parts i could really upgrade was extra storage and better quality power supply. the extra $100 does nothing to give a better gaming experience. okay you could upgrade the cpu to a 5600x with extra storage but the point is $600 not the sweet at the moment. conclusion? just dont. 6. $600 steam deck budget get base model, buy more accessories 7. $700 all new PC https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XBqf6r okay this a solid upgrade, $700 puts us in a better position. cpu-AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor MB-Gigabyte B450M DS3H WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ram-Silicon Power SP016GBLFU320B22 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL22 Memory storage-TEAMGROUP AX2 512 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive gpu-ASRock Challenger D OC Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB Video Card psu-Thermaltake Smart 500 W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply im happy with this, we have a great middle of the road pc. the 6700xt is a last gen card but under cuts everything in its weight class except the 7600xt. the 5600x is a work horse of a cpu. it can game well, edit video, 3d model, etc all quite well. now we are hitting the 500 watt ceiling. depending on load (cpu or gpu) this system could crash, or just out right trip the psu. of course i would like to see more storage im happy to focus on the performance now and add storage later. conclusion? this a good buy, if you have the budget jump on it. 8. ROG ally $600 & $700 budget yes the the ROGA is right around the corner. it will blow the steam deck out or the water at every turn except for base model price. its support for external gpu docking (though clunky as hell) looks to be the future. more horse power in the same form factor is amazing and we have competition for Valve to win our dollar back. BUT! dont buy day one. please at this budget ROGA is still too much of a wild card. it could (more than likely will) boom or it could flop. dont roll the dice if you are just trying to game. the previous options have way too much foundation to pass up not to mention the $700 and $500 will out perform the ROGA and SteamDeck. conclusion? dont buy......... yet? i think in a year from now we could see a proper port of steamos for the ROGA along with a years worth accessories which would blast it to first place. but we dont have it today so dont go buying as if it is. alright, hopefully this will make sense for everyone reading. i asked a question and then hyper fixated for 3-3.5 hrs to right this post. what do you guys think? i think at $400 buy a steamdeck $500 look at the above parts list $700 look at the above parts list its great that these hand helds will drive more competition with lower end pc's causing price drops for both older gen and new hardware. if the steamdeck came out when i building my first pc i would have gone all in on the steamdeck. all the accessories, sd cards, docks, emulation, etc and not regret a single purchase. i still use mine everyday for casual gaming and have my main rig just for channel stuff. it works out great. anyways guys like for the read and feed back and i cant wait to watch this thread.

Linus, you told such a BS story to the 980 guy (nice acting btw) and he was so nice to you I would think it would be a good idea to send him a 1080ti as a gift. You know since you guys have about 35 of them and he helped you possibly win this seasons scrapyard wars performance wise.

scrapyard wars Video idea for Scrapyard Wars season 6
ChocoMocoHD posted a topic in General Discussion
Idea: Road Trip Teams go on a road trip from city to city(or towns if that is easier) and can only buy one item from each city(or town). By the end of the trip they must have completed the build.- 9 replies

Dear Linus and Team Techtips. First and always thank you all so much for all your creativity, Hard work, and Passion. So, I am a long time fan, first time post. I have been recently watching Scrapyard Wars which has quickly become my new love. Great job everyone by the way. And thought to myself if I could ask Linus what would it be. Well it would be, Linus I love scrapyard wars, but dont you think most of us probablly buy online or at least like to, would you consider doing a season or episode that is strickly based on buying on Amazon, or Online, or of that nature. Thank you very much for reading this and I wish you all the best. Your Friend in Arizona, USA Garrett, -Svornair.

I am constantly searching craigslist in my community and can't find anything like Linus and Luke do in Scrapyard wars. I'm curious, has anyone built a computer solely from used parts found on craigslist or Facebook marketplace. If so, are they decent PC's? I am a technology lover however I have never built a computer (even though I have followed LTT since the NCIX days). Is a scrapyard wars scenario practical to do a first time build?

First of all, I know this is a very sensitive issue. So if I'm breaking any rules let me know and I will remove this post. Secondly even though I have the video saved I won't be sharing the video. Two reasons. It's not mine to share and secondly it's pretty big and will take a long time to upload where I live. I'm making this thread only because I'm really curious as to what happened. But as this is sensitive issue I'll understand if I don't get any answers. I'm attaching the screenshot only to show that I'm not bullshitting. So my questions are how did this happen? Did you guys use a public hosting service to upload the video and send it to office? Did you mistakenly send someone else the video? Did someone from the office leak the video? Did a monkey break in, copy the video and ran away with? What do you think happened? Now I'm no detective but I have watched my fair share of detective tv shows and movies. I've watched fromJeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes to Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock. So just saying you know if you guys needed any help I'd be down for it. You could pay me with any gpu (I have no gpu now so anything will do) Spoiler alert:

An interesting idea is a battle to get the best benchmark in the smallest case possible. Scores are based on performance/liter (l*w*h, so boxes will have an advantage). The average of three consecutive benchmarks will be the score. (cooling will be important) Fixed Budget. Requires the case to be made from scratch.

Now that scrapyard wars is over (at least for floatplane subscribers), i thought it might be fun to just pool some ideas together for the next scrapyard wars. Maybe linus would even use some of these ideas for the next one. My thoughts for them are to go to completely unfamiliar high population high traffic city such as NYC, Chicago, LA etc. Some place that is confusing and difficult to navigate. The contestants are given an unlimited budget but the parts must be second hand. The contestants are obly allowed a single tank of gas, or a very limited budget for public transportation. Say maybe $50 ~ 75 or something like that. For every dollar spent above the competing teams PC, points will get subtracted from that teams final score. Im also think for comedic effect the PC should be ugly. Im talking hideously disgusting. So no amount of money spent for a high end case will help at all. They will have to get creative. Obviously which ever teams pc get judged to be the ugliest will be awarded extra points. What does everyone think about that?

Dear Linus, I'm not the first to post this kind of message, which in all likelihood you'll never even know existed (I've never received a reply or acknowledgement from any actual heartfelt...post...to any person/channel/company/conglomerate and I'm not deluded, the chances of this reaching you yourself are equal to lottery ((even better 'like these 14 things and bend over' competition)) odds. Big fan. Again, not delusional, 1M+ views these days is fan-McEffing-tastic and I'm glad the business is looking likely to succeed. BUT (hate it, some actor said "Everything that precedes the word 'but' is horseshit") I don't even watch your content anymore as you've adopted the face reddening trend of making every clip title a crumby click bait title. I KNOW it's probably working in favour (favor) of hits/views/revenue, but I'm guessing (Ye) 'Ol Linus' promised to avoid that when it all beganified. So please, if it's not too financially damaging, go back to titles that just explain the content - rather than saying something like 'WE'VE BEEN GIVEN FIRST PREVIEW OF SOMETHING BEFORE ANYONE ELSE AS USUAL, BUT IS IT ANY GOOD...OR MAYBE IT'S PANTS FOR THE MONEY???!?!?!!?!?!!?!? WHEN IT OBVIOUSLY IS EITHER GOOD OR PANTS.....' The view from my tower is SPECTACULAR, but I am given no choice to say....you're better than that. Secondly, you having helped build my own baby over the years through advice and such, I personally think your next S.C Wars theme should be, how much/well/efficiently can you upgrade a LAPTOP for gaming...I'm after a new laptop so of course it's self indulgent, but hey, content bebay. Yours undoubtedlyunknowingly, Joseph PS. I'v asked you for a job like 5 times already, don't MAKE me ask another 200-300 times...speaking of which, how's your firewall? PPS. THAT'S NOT A THREAT AND I'M NOT A HACKER. WHAT HAPPENED TO THE DAYS WHEN YOU COULD TELL A JOKE.

Been watching, and enjoying, the current season of SYW immensely over on Floatplane. While watching the latest episode, I had an idea - What if you do a SYW where you do no benchmarks, but rather determine the winners by actually playing? I present to you, the Masterrace LAN challenge! Each team is given a set amount of time and money to build 3 (or 5) separate systems. In the end, the winner is determined by which team's computers win the most games out of a list of popular e-sports titles, played at high resolution, with maxed details (hence the masterrace prefix). The idea is for the matches to be bottlenecked not by skill, but by performance! A few points: Building 3 or even 5 separate systems will require more time. You might want to give the competitors an extra day or two, but time should be tight, in order for the teams to be forced to take risks. Budget should be balanced such that the teams will have no feasible way of actually getting a full lineup of systems capable of good framerates. The teams should be forced to play on high-resolution monitors, to ensure high system requirements. The actual players should not be any of the system builders. They should be shoutcasting the intense games! In stead, the teams pick their players ahead of every game, alternating one at a time, with the teams taking turns getting first pick. The system builders also get to decide which player uses which system. Hopefully this will somewhat balance player skill, while allowing for some interesting strategies when parting out the systems. The teams could also be forced to get peripherals, to add another layer of fun! What do you guys think? I think it's a really interesting way to do something completely new with respect to the bencmarking. We've kind of become used to the same criterion for the past seasons.

I apologize at the begining. I don't see a specific place in the forum to post this. I only see the recommendation for proposed Tech Quickie topics. I really enjoy the Scrapyard Wars series. I've been hooked since I saw the first one several years ago, when I began really getting into tech. One of the things I really liked, and still like about the show, is the used parts market and the interactions with people. I really like watching Linus and Luke haggle (As well as Jayz and the other guests), but I do feel like we are consistently seeing the same faces all of the time. I like when things get changed around, such as Season 4 with the Case Modding requirement. Guests on the show that we don't see all the time. So with that out of the way, I really think Bryan from Tech Yes City would be really good competition for Linus. His show is geared around the used parts hunting, and he's got a lot of good information as well as super awesome people skills. I think he might be smoother than Linus as persuading people to sell at lower prices. The heart of Scrapyard Wars is trying to find the best parts and the best prices, and I think Bryan would definitely have the advantage when it comes to negotiation and persuasion. Again, after the past couple seasons, I think we've been seeing very similar competition, and I think fresh competition with other YouTuber personalities would be great. It doesn't always have to be LEET dollar amounts, or some weird RGB fetish to change things up. At the end, its the same people competing against the same people. Linus and Luke are great to watch, but I feel like its a lot of the same old. New personalities bring fresh ideas into the competition. Bryan may not be a fan favorite, and I'm cool with that.. I still would like to see Linus and Bryan battle it out in good old Scrapyard Wars style. I've been wanting to voice my thoughts on this, but had been looking for an official thread for these suggestions. If there is one and I'm super blind, please let me know and I'll take a look. Again, I don't see a subforum for other series suggestions and ideas. If this is the wrong place, please move it to where it belongs. And if anyone else agrees or has other ideas, please share. I'm sure I'm not the only one. Thanks for your time. "Best wishes, and warmest regards," Ryujin2003

I was just thinking about the finale and the salty comments about the self proclaimed Team Imba victory plus all the influence buys, HDD swap etc. But all that aside. If I recall correctly, Linus and Luke decided not to dock Paul and Kyle the 30% for the overtime. Technically that 30% Paul and Kyle gained on the RGB factor would of been pretty much negated after the 30% reduction they would of gotten for going over the 30 minutes of over time (even longer as stated to Jay at the end). IMO I feel like Kyle and Paul did great and had a better potential system. Linus and Luke did great also, and it was very close. The final results though, would of been roughly: Team Imba: 574.65 Team RGBeast: 504.686 Thoughts? Edit: As @rn8686 pointed out RGB was a 10% boost, not 30% as I said above! Adjusted score would be: Team Imba: 574.65 Team RGBeast: 427. 042
-
I remember in the scrapyard wars trailer, Kyle said something about a fist fight happening. However, in the actual scrapyard wars episodes, nothing of a fist fight is ever even brought up. Was this a potential case of LMG including something in the trailers that wasn't actually there just to hype up scrapyard wars?

1: choose a random country or allow viewers to strawpoll vote for a country 2: both teams travel to a place with in that country. Again, randomly selected or voted on 3: try to build/buy a pc Just the idea of the teams trying to find shops and communicate with sellers in Columbia or North korea! yes that would be entertaining I think my idea would be great. what do you think???

Since Linus is officially out of ideas most of us expected SE5 to be nothing special in terms of the competition and rules a lot of viewers did not get disappointed. So feel free to post some ideas on how to make this show creative again and lets hope that SE6 will be at least inspired by some of the better ideas we might come up with. Done so far: >Build a budget PC >Build a PC with DIY watercooling >Build the best value PC >Build and mod a PC >Build a budget PC ver.2.0 I didn't look up any old threads on this topic, so I'm claiming this idea as my own, if it has been posted in some of the year old threads let me know. >Scrapyard wars: free performance edition. Overclocking is a HUGE part of PC hardware culture and yet it is never addressed in depth on LTT. My idea for the next scrapyard wars would not only be fixing this, but also changing the buying pattern, which has been price/performance oriented most of the time. This means that we could even end up with very old or exotic hardware if it overclocks better. Since a lot of parts are overclockable (CPU, RAM, GPU, (+ Motherboard) which is basically the whole PC minus PSU and Hard drives) there won't be any "I'll just buy everything as cheap as I can with a well overclocking CPU and call it a day" if scored accordingly. The idea is: >points for "free" performance, meaning the Systems get benched 2 times. >Bench 1: normal settings (no cheating!) >Bench 2: everything overclocked as far as it can go >Bench 2 gets compared to 1 and this will give the system a score. The bigger the difference, the better. This is just the basic idea, you could still give points for the usual stuff (overall performance, looks, sound etc.) but I'd advise against it. If this is a stupid idea, let me know. If you have a decent idea yourself with the only rule being "address the issues with Scrapyard Wars that you feel is making it stale and predictable" please let me know.
