So I'm building a entirely new gaming PC but... This will be a second hand build because I want to be overclocking, tinkering and generally mucking about with everything I can without it being a massive disaster when I mess up. BUT I don't know whether or not I should try to find a PC pre-built by someone else or if I should find all the individual parts myself. Here are the pros and cons of pre-built vs custom: Custom Pros I can source the exact parts I want for my build. I can ensure there is a better upgrade path. Cons If a part is not working I won't know until I've built the whole PC and then it will be harder to get a refund. I will probably have to pay for a operating system because who sells a HDD with windows? Pre-built Pros If it does not work I will know instantly and can send it back and get a refund quite easily I can mix and match some parts from say a slow PC but has an i7 with parts from one that has a good power supply and ram. Cons Inspecting the images of a whole build in preference to individual parts over a website like ebay can be difficult. I would like to spend as little as possible although I am happy to spend quite a lot if there is a GTX 970 and an i7 in the build. What I need help with is Additionally I am waiting for zen, polaris and pascal hit the market so that I might catch some great deals off of people clearing way for there shiny new builds and so that older GPUs and CPUs value will have gone down. So if anybody knows how or where to find great value pc parts or has seen any good listings please inform me. Anyway Here Is what I am actually looking for: A setup that means I can overclock my CPU, RAM and GPU. Something Expandable to at least 16 GB of RAM. A CPU with 4 or more cores from intel but I would really like to have an i7. Low overall power consumption so an R7 370 in preference to an R9 270 for example. The RAM clocked as highly as possible with heat spreaders. My preference leans slightly towards cooling over having less noise. For newer slow paced games I am fine with medium-high settings @30fps but for FPS games I'm not happy with <60fps at settings that are a detriment to playability. Windows 10. Ok so you might have noticed I'm concentrating on having my CPU being well fed. This is because a) I play very CPU intensive games as it happens b) gaming is not the soul purpose of the machine and c) the GPU is easier and cheaper to upgrade than the motherboard, CPU and potentially RAM if my CPU is bottlenecking my PCs performance. Anyway I realise this is a lot but if anyone could help me in any way at all I would be thrilled. Thanks a million!

Hello, i signed up after watching scrapyard wars. My favourite season is season 2, where the contestant really had to use their wits and knowledge to solve the challanges. Season three became a tad to much and i really like how you made two teams in season four to solve the issue. I got really turned off during season three. All the contestants with their struggles are exciting and interesting to watch. I just dislike the fact that all PCs that qualified for the best valued gaming PC had so many issues during benchmarking. A contest over the best valued gaming PC with unlimited budget should at least be stable. I hope you add rule about stability in the future with some more time to the contestants. A stability rule will make the free stuff more of a high risk, high reward tactic. A builder will never be satisfied with an unstable creation. I really look forward to see what the rest of season four have to offer, the focus on design is brillant. Peace out!

Scrapyard Wars Season 3 was awesome because it wasn't just Linus vs Luke; now that they've featured Austin Evans, who would you like to see next on the show? I'd personally want to see MKBHD featured on the next show.

So recently I bought a GTX 950 SSC to put in my rig, could anyone please let me know if there are any bottlenecks and what I can do to upgrade.

I'm tired of all the videos of people building "console killer" pc's but not actually testing to see if their computer can do everything that the current gen consoles can for the same or lower price. Usually the test consists of comparing the graphics quality of one game like GTA 5 or similar and then saying that "the pc clearly kicks the consoles butt". But in reality the consoles have much lower performance because some of the processing power is permanently set aside only to be used for things such as video capture, streaming, motion controls, and snapped apps. If you really want to compare the power of these two devices then the pc should be tested to see if it can run all these programs ,with the same performance, simultaneously for the same price. I would like to see Scrapyard Wars 4, or later, where the contestant's goal is to build a gaming pc setup that includes everything you get when you buy a console. That means that: 1) The pc must run all applications in the same way that the console does with the same performance. 2) The setup must include any other devices or extras that come in the box such as an input device (controller or keyboard and mouse), webcam (excluding infrared camera), chat solution, cables, ect. 3) The total cost of the setup must cost equal to or less than it's console counterpart. This would be a good show to have 3 contestants again. They could test three different console configurations like say one person would try to beat the base Xbox One, the second would have an Xbox One with kinect, and the third would go against a Playstation 4. With the new low prices of the consoles it would be really hard complete so because you do have to pay to play on Xbox Live or PSN you could also add in some funds for that. This would be a tough challenge but I'm sure with their skills at finding cheap used parts they would have a chance.

I really enjoyed watching the Scrapyard Wars series, especially DIY parts of it and I'm hoping there's going to be more of that soon. I hope this is right place to do so since I couldn't find a proper place except "All things Linus" where somehow I can't post a topic. So my ideas for improving the series would be: - Select from a list of interesting build subjects like e-gpu, bitcoin-farm with many cards hanging on risers, mini steam machine builds with modded cases etc to eforce more DIY - Give teams random and weird competitions for comparing the builds like they did in Top Gear - Allow forum support with randomly but evenly distributed thread access for all team's threads or something done with invitations - More (3?) teams if possible - Allow grabbing staff from the LMG storage shelf if the subject's more about DIY than a fitting under target cash amount. What do you think?

Where does all of the music in the videos come from? I'm not talking about the intro but like the rock loops in Scrapyard wars and stuff like that. Also if you like technology and gaming (which I presume you do if you're on this forum) come and check out Double Click Productions Here Thanks in advance.

While watching Scrapyard Wars 2A Part 1B subsection 3C, I had an idea for the judging on future episodes. Since Linus is a big fan of StrawPoll on the WAN show, I figured he'd be interested in what the forums had to say about their builds. Perhaps they could have a thread or poll on the next build that would factor in our votes? I'm sure they've discussed it before, but I think that'd be a great way to interact with the community.

So i don't know about you but I quite enjoyed LTT scrapyard wars and would love to see a high settings sweet spot war with a slightly higher budget. So what do you guys think, can we make it happen? do you want to see it happen? If you do what should the rules be maybe they should start with a psu and case.

So after watching scrapyard wars and seeing what could be done on a small budget I decided to try it myself and create my first PC build. I have made some modifications to the rules, such as I have unlimited time to find parts and my budget is no more than 1000$ canadian I will try to stick around 800$, I am also allowed to sell parts that I have bought to increase my budget, and buy parts new if they are uneasy to obtain. This is my first ever PC build and I am in desperate need of a new computer that has some kick to it (my current PC's gaming potential is my younger brother playing Minecraft on everything turned down and off and getting 25 fps). I started a week ago and this is my progress. Motherboard: M5a99x evo 60$ Kijiji GPU: Gigabyte R9 290X windforce 1.04 Ghz 250$ Kijiji

Hey Guys newbie here, So I haven't seen anything like this around and I wanted to start a discussion. I loved the recent Scrapyard Wars series and I hope that happens again perhaps with focuses other than gaming. Like a scrapyard wars for a NAS or something. That would be awesome. That style format actually had a ton in common with certain car channels where, with limited budget they build a car to fulfill a purpose, tons of fun to watch for the same reason. It got me thinking that there is another "game" people play with cars that would work well adapted for computers/software. So with no hesitation I introduce: "The Cheap Game Challenge." Here is the premise, the lads get a limited budget say 100$ with a task who can bring in the biggest haul of games CURRENTLY to be purchased at various sites with the intention that they can play no other games for the foreseeable future. So the games have to scratch all their gaming itches. So for instance, my list would include a FPS, RTS, and if I can squeeze in a Racing Game I'd be pleased. As an example of the way it works for cars see . I think it'd be a hoot to watch and have the flavor of "get most bang for the buck" like Scrapyard Wars. Suggestions? Also. what other "non-standard" Linus formats do you want to see?

This build was semi inspired by LTT Scrapyard Wars or just me being cheap... or both. Subtract the monitor, case fans, and the ssd for a more fair comparison with price and performance. Some of you may be wondering why some of these parts have no price listed with them and that is what I expected. The reason for that is that the motherboard, gpu, cooler, and ram were all purchased as a bundle for $145 and that most certainly was quite the steal. The power supply should be more than enough for overclocking and/or a gpu upgrade. The only new parts are the SSD,case, and monitor. The rest is used except for the hard drive which was bought a while ago. The OS is free as an engineering student so no pirating for me. The case fans were an impulse midnight buy with Amazon gift cards. Performance is amazing not only considering the price, but just in general. Rendering and gaming are smooth and I love every second of it. I will try and post performance numbers later but I'm currently not at home. My biggest disappointment with this build has to be the cooler. It gives jet engines a run for their money in the sound department and not to mention the mounting hardware is faulty at best with 1 of the 2 important screws being stripped (I'm not the only one with these problems, even new ones exhibit these flaws). I think it's just a bad cooler. Don't get me wrong, I love the smell of new parts and brand new builds, but used and secondhand, imo, are almost always just as good ie. I've never had a bad used part. I really don't want to copy the end of LTT's video, but most of what they said I agree with so just watch that instead. I am working on getting a video up of the final build but only after finals are over. Please leave any comments and questions you have and I'm curious as to what the best used pc part deal you have ever gotten was. I really hope that question hasn't been asked too many times before. P.S. I'm also looking for a new case so please use this thread to recommend one to me: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/329378-outgrowing-my-old-case/

Now I know that another scrapyard wars is on the way, and I have no idea what they have planned for it. (Heck, it might even be what I'm suggesting right now) But, I came up with a bit of an idea. Now, of course, like the last one there would be a certain budget and time limit. (and they're also talking about celebrity guests O_o) But this time they would be building a PC, but not just any PC. A bitcoin miner.( spell-check wants to change "bitcoin" to "bitchiness") Of course they would be rated on how much they cost and how efficient they are, but since they are bitcoin miners other things can be factored in. I was thinking that the final defining score is how much profit they would make over a certain period of time. But, along with calculating just bare profit you would have to factor in the costs of the actual machine and power consumption. There could also be a sort of bonus round where they factor in temperature and noise. Just an idea that i thought might be cool (sorry if anyone has posted this before... I haven't been on the forum in a while.)

(THIS POST HAS MOVED TO BUILD LOGS, CLICK HERE TO SEE MORE) BACKSTORY My Current Build List - CODENAME: Ratchet - King of the Scrapheap CPU - AMD FX 6100 OC to 4.0GHz (Freebie! Kindly donated by GzeroD) - eBay MOBO - (New!) Asus M5A97 LE R2.0 - ($47 Shipped from eBay) - GPU - AMD R9 280x ($150-ish on eBay) - eBay RAM - DDR3 8GB (Yet to find a good deal, maybe 4GB dimm X2) Case - Bitfenix Neos Red/White ($34 On Sale ends 3/11/15) - NCIXUS CPU Cooler - be quiet! Shadow Rock 2 (39.99 shipped from Newegg) PSU - Thermaltake TR2 500W ($37 Clearance @ Radioshack RIP) DVD Drive - free (from previous repair) HDD - SATA3 2.5mm 320GB drive (free from previous repair) The Motherboard Swap I had originally planned to use a MSI 970A-G46 Motherboard, but a cross between not being able to get a solid line from the seller on craigslist and some unsettling research about this board had me throw it out entirely . Come to find out through sites like TomsHardware.com the MSI board was a terrible overclocker and on more than a few occasions had ruined CPUs and other parts even with steady overclocks and straight-out rejected OC'd 8-core CPUs. Apparently that's why you see so many on the second hand market. To replace my previous board I went to eBay to scavenge, and late last night I found an Asus M5A97 LE R2.0. Bought it. Comes with the standard factory warranty and an additional warranty from the store the seller bought from. (Fully transferable, no worries) The only thing that gets me is the board doesn't have heatsinks leaving me to possibly damage the board with my mild OC. Now I know for about $15 I can buy copper fins to help dissipate the heat and that in some benchmarks I've seen helps for about 10 degrees in some cases. However, this is where the genius of buying an air cooler comes in. With the motherboards rather hot parts being situated toward the back of the board, and conveniently in the path of the airflow coming off my CPU and right in front of my rear case fan, this means I will always have a steady pull of air cooling the motherboard right where it needs it. Motherboard cooling, all thanks to fluid dynamics and decent engineering. So I will probably invest in some mosfet heatsinks in the future, but I want to see what the board can handle before I start chucking money for parts that I may not need. Conclusion With my new parts this build costs an estimated total of $370 (USD) out of my $350~$450 budget. Now I haven't bought a GPU or RAM so this is the last part of the race where I can Min/Max as much as I can to turn that $370 into a $350 or even a $340. So this is where I wait and find the best deal and pounce. I've already created followed searches for the R9 280X and 7970 on eBay and check my craigslist once-a-day. I'm planning on getting some kind of performance RAM most likely second hand. Special thanks to forums user GzeroD for donating his AMD FX 6100 toward this build! Although he says it was just gathering dust in the corner, it means a lot and I greatly appreciate it. This truly is a great group of people here at LinusTechTips. Let's all give him some good karma and keep the vibes flowing. Can you dig it? Tell me what you guys think? Decent? Leave your thoughts in the comment section. This is what my locals have to offer at the time. What do you think? Questions? Comments?
