So I am looking for a new WiFi router, something that would functionally replace an Airport TimeCapsule but with modern speeds. AFAIK, I need a: Wifi 6 (or 6e) capable router Router with a few external USB 3 (3.???) ports, so that a 1-5 TB external USB hard drive can be attached to it to make a file server at 100+ MB/sec speeds. (router with an internal HDD / SSD would be nice but maybe not necessary.) Router that has some wired Gigabit ethernet ports (one WAN side, and 2+ LAN side for desktops) DMZ feature? Basic wifi router that isn’t a wifi extender (wifi mesh network device, or whatever that is). Am I missing any features I may need? I just want to make a file server for photos, and videos, and to upgrade my local Wi-Fi speeds, to keep things secure locally, and preferably to not pay for extra “remote/cloud access” features. So given these features I am looking for, does anyone have any recommendations for what WiFi router (and/or external TB USB drive) I should get? I read on the forums people mentioning TP-Link router devices. ( c.f. https://www.tomsguide.com/best-picks/best-wi-fi-6-routers hard to choose, some are brands that I have read here that are bad (netgear), some are wifi mesh routers,…) Thanks, RO.

Hey everyone. sorry if i didnt look hard enough for a solution on here. ive been trying for weeks. i just moved in with some friends. the new home owners father used to work as an engineer / in telecommunications. we currently have 2- 2.4 ghz networks, and 1 5-ghz network. we dont have the password for the 5ghz network. the house is two stories, main router is on the main floor. i was told that the two different 2.4ghz networks were based off of the main floor and the second floor. while going into the router options to see if i cound find the 5ghz password i found. we have our main router. another router on the main floor. and then upstairs we have a "office" which has at least 6 different routers. all of them will give me internet hardwired to my laptop. our 1 network only works on some devices / has connection issues / slow for our internet speed our second network is pretty decent but not that fast for gigabit internet 5ghz cant even find it in router settings to get the password hard wired to the main router i get 800 megabits/s up and down everywhere else is under 100 even on wifi i assume the best course of action is disconnect everything from the main router. perform a factory reset on the network settings and then find a solution for wifi extenders its a house of 4 adults. heavy wifi / internet users basically whats the most cost effective / easiest way to set up this house. we dont need hardwired connections upstairs that badly. mainly just a connection that doesnt drop all the time i appreciate any and all answers!

Hi, I wanted to ask that how can I improve my internet without getting a new internet connection. I have Huawei B315s-22 and it works fine in the morning. I get 60-70 ping (on Ethernet) in Valorant in the morning but, as the day passes my ping gets higher and higher as much as 2000+ ping. I have searched about this issue on the internet and found about network congestion which I know can be handled by a wifi extender. Now, I want my ping to be consistent throughout the day and night. My question is that if I buy a Huawei WS5200 which is a dual band router and use it as an extender with my primary router and connect all 8 devices in my home to the new router (through wifi 5GHz) and the PC to my primary router (through ethernet) will it help me get a better ping? Thanks

So basically we are getting a new wifi router and wifi provider, we have a nbn cable that runs through the house into our modem and we want to get this router https://www.pccasegear.com/products/52558/asus-rt-ax55-ax1800-dual-band-wi-fi-6-router, will this work if we use a (I think it is a RJ45 NBN) cable or do we need something else?

First im new to OpenWRT and i realize there is an entire wiki on this topic and setup, but im not understanding the information exactly so maybe one of you guys could explain it in more laymans terms... this is the router i am trying to configure, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GBXMBQF/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_Z04ZNZFJ5Y4VYDDMKZ3T it seems to do everything i need it to.... individually, but i cannot seem to connect to static IP devices... Im and automation technician, here lately i have been doing alot of reprogramming and replacing plc's and i tend to prefer ethernet, these devices often come with various preset IP address's that need to be changed upon initial setup so that their on the same subnet. I quickly realized readdressing all of them and plugging in a wireless router was needed to eliminate time, then i need to add internet to this new network to assist with help files, etc. So i took an old TP-link router that i found that was 5V and modified it to create my network with all my devices, and added another access point device to plug into the Wan port on the TP link router. This setup works but is bulky and rather large, so i found the above device that is USB powered and has all the features needed however i cannot see any of the PLC/HMI style devices and i am not sure why... The router does have a Luci GUI under the advanced settings but everytime i mange to get static IP devices to show, then i break Internet connectivity so im sure what i am doing wrong, If someone feels like reaching out to help i can further explain in detail or maybe even setup a video call. I figure it wouldnt take long but ive wasted two days and have factory reset this thing multiple times. ATTACHED IS MY DESIRE CONFIGURATION... the ethernet ports on the back would act as a switch allowing everything on the "switch" to talk amongst there selves as well as to the laptop... (these three ports on the device dont need internet, but it would be nice if they could access it as well) The laptop can access internet and all devices... and i can use wifi or USB tethering as my internet source depending on if i am in the workplace or on a service call.... can anyone help or atleast point me in the right direction...

So, I have got no clue why, but when I use my mikrotik router (RB941-2nD) the internet connection becomes very weird. I am very confused so some diagnostic tips would really help. When I play CS:GO it quite regularly starts to jitter. This happens all the time with discord and other web calling apps. This does not happen when I connect the ISPs cable directly to the motherboard. Could it be because of the fact that my connection to the internet is 300Mbit but the router supports only 100Mbit networking? I did not nortice this for quite a while (a few months), maybe it showed up after I updated the firmware.

Hi everyone, So I got Starlink internet about a year ago and it has 100% changed my gaming with the low latency. (rural internet is AWEFUL) I plugged my computer directly into the modem, and while playing WoW I was getting in the range of 80-150ms of latency (local + global) my wife's computer was connected via 5g wireless and it was about the same, even while streaming the latency did not change. Now the messy part. At our farm there are 2 houses, Mine and my parents house; my brother his wife have also been living with my parents since the pandemic. In order to cut monthly internet fees we trenched a 400ft of RG11 Coax cable (was rated for burial) and we linked my starlink service to my parents house. I have Used an older Asus router (RT-AC66U) as a gateway to connect my pc, the digital-to-analog converter to run internet to my parents, ext. Anyway ever since we made that change our latency has increased, it stays in the 200-250ms range now! I have researched and used the router settings and fine tuned the QoS settings, tried disabling firewall, wifi. and I can't get my gameplay lag below the 200-220ms range. Is this just because of the older router? the increase of devices? I don't know I've kinda reached the end of my knowledge at this point thanks for reading! **edit: I thought I should add that the peak about of devices connected is around 12. 3 of which are connected to the starlink 5g wifi but they too are showing the same increase in lag.

So my dad got a warning message from kaspersky saying someone was trying to get to his computer. He ignored it at first thinking its a small thing but then kaspersky started spamming him with warnings to shut of the computer. He ended up pulling the power and lan cable from his computer isolating it. I am a bit worried for my pc as I am a student and have worked my ass of for over a year to afford the 2000$ rig I am running today and would get crazy mad if someone took control over it. My dad owns a company and so has a lot of customers information is at risk hence why he is getting a new pc to be fully sure to keep that safe. My questions are: Is the router at risk, all pcs in my home are connected to our router via cable, and if so would they be affected? And is there any way to prevent this from happening again or get a hold of the people that did it? (Kaspersky gave my dad an origin IP adress but that's probably just a fake). Thanks a LOT for any type of help as I really need it.

I am sure this situation is not unique, but I would appreciate any help. My home network consists of a custom mini pc running Untangle for routing and firewall, etc. No issues with that. The problem is my Asus AC-5300 has bitten the dust. It has been functioning as an access point. It has had descent range but not the best. Question: can anyone suggest a replacement that will have at least as good range, if not better? Open to any and all suggestions. I truly appreciate. It is hard to find reviews, etc on range.

I have a D-Link DIR-859 and even though I'm getting my 500Mbps service from the ethernet ports on my router I can't get more than 30Mbps through wifi. The throughput of the router is 1300Mbps for 5Ghz, my M1 MacBook Air has 1200Mbps, iPhone XR 1300, granted that these numbers are for in an ideal environment but shouldn't I still be seeing higher numbers? The router and devices are in line of sight and about 10ft from each other, and nothing in between them. I feel like I'm spinning my tires with this, even went as far as to reset the router. Any thoughts and ideas would be awesome!

Hi, is it worth to have router , which can transfer more than 2000mbps . ? Is there any benefits in real world (not on paper) to have router which can transfer 3000 or more megabits per second? I am looking for new router and there are a lot of them with different speed and etc. And the ones with faster speed cost more, but not sure if there is a point to have router which cost more than 100 euros. thanks :)

some context for ya- While torrenting I notice something quite weird, Task manager shows internet speeds in waves at one point it's at 70-84 Mbps, and 10 seconds its 4-5 Mbps ( Mbps, NOT MBps, I checked ) And the torrent's are DEFINITELY not the problem, This happens on every torrent. And al are quite popular with 20-30 seeds. And oh, IDK if this is the problem, but I run plex media server on this, and for a few of ma homie's I set up remote access. I had to set up port forwarding if it matters. And just yo make it clear, I am NOT asking why my speeds are much slower. I wouldn't care if it was 50 Mbps, because I know it would a recognisable/googlable issue. This is straight up weird. This happen way too often,an I have to restart PC to solve it temporarily. This computer is on 20/7, if it matters

Anyone know the stealthiest way to route a cable from one corner to the next (not including through the wall)? Need to get an ethernet cable from one corner of a room to the diagonal opposite. Appreciate the help!

GDL 1 and GDL 2 and MEX 01 are computers. It shows that I do not have the Default Gateway set on them. What is it and how do I set it up? I am also sending photos to show what it looks like for me.

Hi, I'm sure I'm not the only one here who bought some of the T-Mobile AC1900 "network extenders" and turned it into an Asus AC68U router. Mine has been working great for years but I'm wanting to upgrade the firmware to the latest version. Current version Im on: 3.0.0.4.384_32738-gc9a116a Is anyone still using these or could tell me whats the newest firmware version I can install? I have read some rumors here and there saying that some people's routers reverted back to the AC1900 firmware and this is my main router in my home.

Hi, I just set up my TP-link AC4000, a.k.a Archer A20, and it's working fantastic, save one thing, the 2.4GHz band. I'm only getting up to 40 Mbps down and our bandwidth is rated at 200 Mbps down and we get 230 Mbps down. It's in 'router mode' too. When I was using our Spectrum router, I'd get the same speed 230 Mbps as I would on the 5G band. I just want to know what's bogging it down. I have both IPv4 & IPv6 enabled. I haven't changed default settings, save for stuff like SSID names and passwords of course. The only other things I've changed, the security protocols are all enabled. I also changed IPv6 LAN type to DHCPv6 rather than the default SLAAC+Statless DHCP. Should I change it back to SLAAC+Stateless DHCP or is my DHCPv6 just fine? What I'm looking for most, in this speed, reliability, range & security. I don't know why my IPv4 is so slow. I've tried my phones to my PC using WiFi mode. Could it be the security protocols enabled is too much? That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe it could be a little, but cutting down 3/4's of the speed out... I don't think so. Anyway, if anyone could help me fix that, it would be much appreciated! Model: Archer A20 Hardware Version: V3 Firmware Version: 1.03 20191026 rel.16299 (5553) Thank you in advance, Sithtiger

Hey, sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'm not very knowledgeable in computer networking. I currently have all the network equipment from my ISP and was wondering if it would be worth upgrading. The speed is good and the range is ok, I do sometimes have a bit of an issue with 5.0 GHz network disconnecting. Current I have an ONT, a gateway with the wifi disabled and a wifi router (WCB3000N) I was looking at either a TP-Link Archer AX50 AX3000 Dual Band Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Router or TP-Link (Archer C2300) AC2300 Wireless WiFi Route, but am open to other suggestions as well. Would either of those be a significant update? Finally, would I plug it into my ONT and replace my gateway, or do I plug it in to my gateway to replace my WiFi adapter? Hopefully that all makes sense, like I said, I'm not great with the terminology. Thanks

Hey sorry if I got the terminology wrong. I still have the ISP WiFi router and it doesn't seem to work very good. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good introductory Wifi router I could pick up?

Recently I’ve had big issues with connecting my pc to the internet. Since I’m using AirTies I’ve got three units placed around my house. One connected to the main router (in the living room), one in the kitchen that just acts like a “booster” for the connection or what it’s called, and then finally I have one in my room that is connected directly to my pc with an Ethernet cable (my pc does not have Wi-Fi built in). Basically whenever I turn on my pc the AirTie in my room completely drops out. And just to add insult to injury the AirTie comes back online about 2 min after I turn my pc off. Although all the other AirTies downstairs are working just fine. I’ve been using AirTies before all this for about three years with no problem at all, including 3-4 months with my current pc. This also includes my two previous PCs that also used the same AirTie with the same Ethernet cable. Also all my other devices work just fine all around the house. Incase the hardware in my pc is related to the problem I’ll mention it here: CPU: Ryzen 5 5600x GPU: RTX 3070ti RAM: 16gb 3200mhz SSD: 1tb nvme m.2 HDD: 2tb (Can’t remember the brand) Motherboard is from Asus but I cannot remember which it is (it should be a pretty new one since I bought my pc mid summer this year) Any help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks. PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Turned out my terrible cable management behind my pc was the problem since it essentially jammed my AirTie since the AirTie was right in the mess.

Hello. I dont know whether this is the correct forum for this question, but I couldnt find any other suitable spots to post this so here we go... I recently built my first PC and now Im using it with WIFI (onboard wifi chip & antenna) and that hasnt been a problem for almost a full month. In the past few days however, my Wifi decided to act up a lot and I cant seem to find a solution or even someone sharing the same issue anywhere: When playing apex legends with a friend, my WIFI looks, feels and works absolutely normally until at one point my ping shoots to unreasonable extremes (2000+) and becomes super unstable. It then usually fluctuates between normal, somewhat fluid gameplay and this awfull mess of freezeframes and extreme ping. The games internal analytics tell me I get this super high ping and a high packet loss, but the FPS stay above 40 (unchanged) so it isnt my PC hardware most likely. For testing sake I stopped the game entirely when it happened last time and almost immediately after started downloading the new valorant update. I got about 10 to 100kbps of download speed there. Until at some point, it jumped to my regular 7 or 8Mbps.+ When this happens, the router interface shows a completely clogged Wireless-Channel. I will provide a picture that nicely captures the problem. I think it might also be relevant to include that according to my routers interface, all the data being pulled through the Channel is incoming Data. And when I was seeing the download speed normalize, there was a huge wave of outgoing data I have never seen before. It is also important to mention, that this always happens around the same time (10-12pm). Might be a little sooner or later, but thats usually the time around which I play, so thats when I notice it. Maybe it also happens throughout the day and I just dont notice tho. Does anyone maybe have any information about the nature of this issue, the cause of the problem or even a potential solution? I have considered going wired instead of wireless (which I wanted to avoid so far cause I would have to run the cable and that will look ugly in the end). I have also considered testing this with another router, but I do not have access to one. If neccessary, I can always include more information. But due to my minimal knowledge about networking, I do not even know what else to mention here and what to look for while troubleshooting. Some information about my hardwawre: Using the Fritz!Box 7360 and an EasyBox as a repeater (the repeater is connected to the main router with LAN) 2 devices connected by LAN and 3 to 5 phones plus my PC connected Wirelessly 60mbs download, 12mbs upload Router firmware is up to date (updated shortly before the issues started, could that be the problem?) Telekom as my service provider Sorry for the bad image quality. The pictures below show the Channel usage chart, one picture shows what it looks like when the connection shoots up for the first time, two of them how it fluctuates and the last one (with a big green portion in the graph) is when the issues stopped (yesterday, didnt test it since). As mentioned above, I expect this to not be enough or the right information, so feel free to ask for anything that might help identify the issue. Thank you in advance. Any Information is dearly welcomed

So we were using a wifi router/modem for a while a 2 in 1 device but the wifi range was horrible. So we bought an asus wifi router and set the old device into modem only mode. All my devices are running ethernet cords but for some reason my PC internet speed slows down from 8-15 when i plug it into the new asus router, And when i plug it back in to the modem i get my usual speed from 250-400 mbps. This problem only occurs with my pc becasue my roku, ps5, and smart t.v. are all using ethernet cords plugged into the new asus router with no problems. Any help guys ? Also idk if this helps but on the back of the motherboard where the ethernet port is there is a green light when it is plugged into the modem and then that light switches to orange when plugged into the asus router.
