I have an old G linksys router collecting dust. Has anyone found the best use for them or maybe used as a repeater or access point? Firewall, Media Server......one more thing, if someone has the ability (2 NIC Cards) to run dual ethernet lines, is there any performance gains or security gains and has anyone used the MAC changing abilities in *Nix?

My wifi is kinda bad, and I have to restart my router all the time. For example, my ping to 8.8.8.8 becomes higher than 300 ms sometimes. Also, it never gets higher than 70 Mbps. Help, how can I make wifi faster, even my school wifi is better. EDIT: I am not connected using Ethernet, because my router is in an awkward position.

I need a way to hinder my brother’s ethernet connection, but under the current circumstances i’m not smart enough to do this myself. So Lets get down to the deal. i don’t have wifi but my pc do have LAN connection to the router, + the ethernet wire (The global one, don’t know how its called) go trough my room. Said router is inside his room. He changed the admin password for router settings and whitelisted only his PC. I could reset the router and superglue the reset button but right now that’s not the option, What could i do to break his ethernet temporarily when he plays videogames? Maybe there’s some form of a heatwave that can cause problems with the wire, or somehow ruin it trough cmd on my PC? His play list consists only of League of legends.

I have a 80 Mbps internet line in my house. The internet comes over a fibre optic cable, is converted to ethernet which then plugs into my router. I'm using a D-Link DIR-825 as my router. It has 4 gigabit ports, all of which I use. One of my router's ports isn't working anymore, so I've thought about getting an ethernet switch, maybe plugging my router's LAN to the switch, and using the switch to connect to my 4 devices (2 PCs at Gigabit speeds, 2 APs at 100Mbps). I used to think switches were very simple, but I'm starting to see some specs like Forwarding rate and what not. What specs do really matter in my situation, and how heavily can getting a low-priced switch affect my network speeds?

Sorry if my terminology is off, but I am looking for a consumer-grade router that can allow me to create an SSID that runs through a VPN (PIA) and a separate SSID that is 6GHz only. Not looking to break the bank, not sure where to look online. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hello there, I really want to ask for an advise from more experienced users than myself abot L2TP internet speed. So I bought NetGear AX1800 RAX20 router (latest firmware already installed) and it seemed to work fine by delivering 100mb/s stable connection. However after I bought new xbox console I noticed that I am always getting disconnected from online gaming even though everything is connected directly by internet wires. After discussing this issue with my ISP I've been told that I need a vpn connection using L2TP which they can provide me with. After entering all the credentials in my router I got VPN L2TP connection and my console started to work just fine. However I didnt check my internet speed at that same moment. Lately I've noticed my internet speed is limited to 60mb/s while using VPN which is almost 50% less the amount I am paying for. If I turn L2TP option off - my speed comes to normal 100mb/s. As a solution my ISP offered me to try their own router (Mikrotik hap-lite 7442a-94125ND) which is significantly smaller and, on paper, less powerful. BUT using this router with L2TP my connection is basically 100mb/s. ISP explained to me that my routers CPU is not powerful enought to encrypt all the data so it limits the bandwidth. Another solution would be to turn L2TP encryption off, but I did not find this option in my router setting. Mikrotik router seems to handle this without any problem for some reason and I get 100mb/s stable connection. So the main question: is my NetGear router so bad (even though it costs 3 times as much) that it can not deliver 100mb/s bandwidth with L2TP connection or am I missing something? I would like to keep my NetGear router because it has so many features and controlling it with an app sometimes is really usefull, but this 60mb/s limitation really forces me to take Mikrotik router instead.

I have a tenda AC11 as my main router. And I want to use a Mercusys MW325R as a wireless repeater. Now the problem is, after doing the WDS Bridging on the mercusys, keeping both the router SSID different, and the LAN IP as 192.168.0.1 for the tenda, and 192.168.0.2 for the mercusys, when I connect with the mercusys router, I cant access the config page (192.168.0.2) or (mwlogin.net) of the router I just was configuring on anymore.

Hi everyone, Can anyone share the list of TP-Link routers that support configuring NordVPN directly on their router's page settings? I cant find it on NordVPN website or anywhere.... Regards

I have an ethernet cable running from my main router (D-link DIR-825) which also serve as Wi-Fi access point for the whole house to my room. Recently I needed to plug in another computer (a laptop) in my room. Since Running another cable is very tedious, I decided to use my old D-link router (DIR-816) in switch mode (WIFI disabled), dhcp off, UPnP off. Every thing was working fine so far. But after connecting any device on the now switch, WIFI grinds to stop on the main router. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help.

This is a weird one, I can't even figure out where to start in figuring this out. Hello everybody! I recently started having issues with my network, specifically my LAN connected devices. My network is set up the following way: Outside fiber -> Telekom fiber modem -> FritzBox 7590 (router) -> ca. 10m (~33ft) CAT5e LAN cable -> TP-Link TL-SG105 -> 2 PCs and a wired WLAN-AP. Tl;dr (for details, read the rest): I randomly lose LAN connection to my router. I can sometimes get it back. When I get it back, I sometimes still can't reach the router or the internet. Surefire way to fix it is rebooting the router. Have no clue what is going on. I should mention, the cases I'm describing here are not all one event but multiple events where sometimes one of the solutions I tried worked BUT there was one event where I did everything in the described order. Here it gets weird: When I walk out of my room I directly walk past the switch. It's on the bottom of a shelf with the LAN cable running underneath the shelf. When I come back to my PC, I've lost LAN connection. Further, the line coming in on the switch shows up as disconnected. So, my first thought was, maybe the cable and the super janky LSA connector I use to connect the end of the cable coming out of the wall to another cable that then goes into the switch slightly moves when I walk past it (this building is about 90 years old) and there is a bad connection. So, I pulled it apart, confirmed it works fine with a multi meter and put it back together. Issue persists. It's also not guaranteed to fail when I walk past it. Instead, it fails randomly. Next thing I did was log into the FritzBox with my phone to see what it can tell me. LAN shows up as disconnected. I go and just change all the ports. Go from port 0 on the FritzBox to port 1 and shuffle all ports on the switch. LAN shows up as connected on the FritzBox again but no devices. Weird... I check my PC and it tells me, no internet access but LAN is connected. Even weirder... I'm pretty much at a loss and start throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. /ipconfig renew is the first thing I think of, and it tells me the DHCP-Server isn't replying. But I can see that something assigned an IP to my PC. I change the port speed on the FritzBox from 1Gbit to 100Mbit and boom, my PC shows up as connected to the FritzBox, but I still don't have internet AND I can’t reach the FritzBox from my PC. So, renew again, I think. Still no reply from the DHCP-Server. What?! Switch the port back to 1Gbit and nothing changes. PC still shows up, still can't reach the FritzBox or reach the DHCP server. Only thing left that I could think of, is reboot the FritzBox and now everything works fine. A few hours later (I've walked in and out of my room multiple times now) I walk out of my room and come back: LAN connected but no internet access. Huh? Try to reach the FritzBox with my PC, nope. Log in with my phone, LAN connected but no devices. I just, what? I know enough about networking to know that I know nearly nothing and not enough to even begin figuring this out. I know a thing or two about wires, wiring and how important shielding is to know that the LSA connector is jank but works fine and isn't affected by the floor subtly shifting when I walk past it. If pulling on the cable (dw, I'm not yanking on it) to get it out underneath the shelf doesn't affect it then why would walking past it? Beyond that I have absolutely no clue what is going on. I did run the cable my self and there are no points where someone could walk over it or even damage it in any way. What I'm saying is, it's done right. Any help in diagnosing the issue or even fixing it would be much appreciated. English isn't my first language if there are any points where something isn't clear, I apologize and please don't hesitate to ask for clarification. Thanks in advance, Zero

My usage is gaming, game stream broadcasting. Online a lot of the times. Have only a handful of wi-fi devices. I've been through many tp-link routers. Ideally would want more value for money.

Up until several weeks ago, I had no internet issues. I frequently lose internet access to all of my devices, now; wired and wireless. My browsers and Windows network adapter diagnosis say that the DHCP server can't be reached. I use an Arris SB8200 modem and a TP-Link Archer C7 v4.0 router. My desktop is hardwired to the router. I have tried the following: Rebooting the router (no change) Connecting the desktop directly to the modem (no change) Using a different router (no change) Using a different modem (no change) I used a new modem for a week and returned it after the first disconnect happened. Calling the ISP (no problem identified) Having an ISP tech visit (no problem identified) He checked the coax cables and grounding. Of course, the internet was fine while he was here. Rebooting the modem (this usually works, but the problem returns in anywhere from a week to 5 minutes) I'm going nuts. What should my next step be? What could be the root cause?

Hi, I recently bought a TP-Link Archer C6 router. Previously I had a ISP router which was not that good. I've connected the ISP one to the new router and it is working fine. Except that the NAT Type is set to Strict. I want to how I can change that to Open. I DMZ'ed my PC from the route's "site" but still I get "You're NAT type is set to Strict" in GTAO. When I looked into to I see lots of info about Port Forwarding and stuff. I don't understand that. For my ISP router I was easily able to change the NAT type. It had a drop-down menu of some sorts but in TP-Link I'm not able to find it. Can someone please help me ? TLDR: Need help with Changing NAT type in a TP Link Router and Need info about Port Forwarding and stuff. Thank You

I'm sure by this point most of us have had to worry about the stupid ISP 1TB/m data cap at least a few times. Is there any sort of software solution to just kill your router when you get to like, within a gig or so? I can live without wifi for a little bit, but I can't live with Comcast charging me like $40 per megabyte or whatever it is once you go over. I've considered paying the extra $30/m for unlimited, but this is an infrequent enough problem for that to be an infeasible solution for me personally. I have pretty standard stuff in my home (Phone, laptop, Apple TV, PC), but I also just finally set up Sonarr on my Plex server and that has really been chewing through some data. The server itself is running Windows, so setting a data cap using the built in tool would be easy enough, but then I'm leaving money on the table, right? If I set a 500gig cap for the server, but only use 300 on everything else, then that's 400gigs I paid Comcast for but didn't use! And I don't wanna set the cap to the hard limit of 1200, because then I'd inevitably go over with my other devices. I'm not a complete noob when it comes to networking, but I'm not nearly good enough to be able to parse a lot of the old Reddit threads I find when I look at stuff like this. Any help is appreciated

Hi, I have a 100Mbps connection at home and when I do a speed test (Ookla), with lan, I get a reading of 80-90Mbps. But then I use the wifi, which is from a TPLink DIR615, in 2.5Ghz, I get a speed of only 30-50Mbps. (My model does not support 5Ghz and only has 20Mhz and 40Mhz channels). Any suggestions and insights would be welcome.

Hello everyone. Im quite new to setting up home networking. My current home networking situation is quite old: ISP provided modem on the first floor with separate WiFi network and the WiFi 4 router on the second floor with separate WiFi network. I am not getting the internet speed I am paying for (500Mb/sec - max in my country for now) with this setup, AND I have to manually swap my WiFi connection every time I go to different floor, so I want to upgrade the whole networking system in my house. I want faster internet connection and want my phone and other devices to swap automatically the WiFi connection node. As I was looking up in Internet, Asus routers have a feature called AiMesh, and I dont fully get the difference of it from other dedicated Mesh system in the market. So the choice I have right now is buying 2 separate Asus routers (that supports WiFi 6 and AiMesh) or buy 2 piece Mesh system (that also supports WiFi 6). Can someone explain if there is any difference in practical daily usage between those two, and what should I go with? Thank you!

Will two devices on the same network still have to go through the router if they want to communicate with each other even though they are connected to the same switch? Will they have to go out of their way to go through the router? I drew a diagram here. It's kind of sloppy since it currently 2:30 am and I couldn't sleep without asking this question first.

So basically my problem is that I want to see how to improve my internet speed on my Ps4. I just moved into a rental house where the owner provides wifi. At my old place, I just plugged my router into the wall port and ran an ethernet cable to my Ps4 for a Lan connection and it was super fast. Now I cannot run a long enough cable to the owner's router and the 2.4 GHz that the Ps4 connects to is very slow and unusable. The 5g connection from the owner's router is fine on my computer and phone, but the Ps4 internet is slow. I have my own router here and when I tried plugging it into an ethernet port on the wall in my room it didn't get any internet connection. The router the owner has is a gigaspire connected to what I believe is a modem provided by the ISP that is connected to a GPON thing on the wall. How can I either hook up my router in my room or improve my internet speed?

Hi everyone, So recently I was going through my router to understand some of the settings. Its a TP-Link router (model TL-WR940N). I noticed on the Status page that there is this secondary connection with its own IP address. I understand the IP address of LAN and WAN parts but what is the point of the Secondary connection and the IP it provides? LAN MAC Address: 60-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx IP Address: 192.168.x.x Subnet Mask: 255.xxx.xxx.x WAN MAC Address: 60-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx IP Address: 100.xx.xxx.xx PPPoE(Connect Automatically) Subnet Mask: 255.xxx.xxx.xxx Default Gateway: 113.xxx.xxx.xxx DNS Server: 192.xxx.xx.xx , 192.xxx.xx.xx Online Time: 1 day(s) 01:33:20 Secondary Connection IP Address: 10.xx.xx.xx Dynamic IP Subnet Mask: 255.xxx.xxx.x

Hello. I'm using pfsense to set up a personal router for my own home network. I have Cox ISP to a Netgear Nighthawk CM1000v2 to a mini pc that contains a Celeron J4125 with 8gbs of ram and has 4 2.5gb ports. I've set up the 1 LAN and WAN ports. LAN leads to a switch that everything, including the access point (which isn't setup yet), is connected to. My computer is plugged into the switch. I have tested by plugging directly into the router. When setting up I followed both networkchuck's and Lawerence Systems's videos on it. Pfsense is running 2.6.0 on amd64. I see the WAN with my public ip and my LAN with my local ip. DNS server of 1.1.1.1 and 9.9.9.9. If there is more info needed please let my know.
