Hi guys, i found someone who wants to buy my notebook. Of course I cant give it to him the way it is right now. I need to erase my private data and the Windows 10 license (the laptop came with Windows 10 Home installed) has to go into his ownership. I saw that Windows 10 has a built in reset option ( Start>Settings>Update&Security>Recovery) that deletes all files. -> But what about the user name? Wouldn't I actually have to re-install Windows and then enter his Name so that his Username folder gets created? When I first got the laptop and started it for the first time, Windows was installed but I had to enter my Name etc and this stuff got created. Is there a way to do this again? Does anyone have experience with selling laptops (and Windows included) and can give me some advise? If there is a better sub-forum for this question please tell me / move this thread. Thanks in advance!

My operating system needs a reset (clean of hard drive) as files continue to get corrupted and there is a virus that I have not been able to remove apparently. Although, I have the problem where I cannot open the start menu bar to get to the settings app and the reset option. I have tried getting into the recovery menu manually and was able to get to "Advanced recovery tools". Here, there is an option that says "If you're having problems with your PC, go to settings and try resetting it". This is exactly what I want, but when I click on it, it will not open. I have tried sfc/ scannow in the command prompt and it will only go to 2% then says that this operation cannot be completed. I have also tried the trouble shooter that Microsoft has developed for this specific issue of not being able to open the settings app and that did not work either - it instantly goes to "trouble shooting cannot identify the problem". I have also tried reinstalling windows (earlier, with the windows 7 CD before I upgraded to windows 10) and the problem was not removed. Basically, my computer is broken, and it needs a reset and a complete clean of the hard drive, but I can't reset it because it's so broken. Please help?

Hello everyone, could someone help me reset my password on my actual account? I keep hitting the forgot password and will not receive an email no matter what I do thank you

Let me start off by saying that my reason for doing so is for completely legitimate reasons. Now that that's out of the way, let me explain. My boss has an old file server he wants to try to use as a backup workstation (our workstations have shitty power supplies, so we lose at least one of them every time the power goes out.) The problem is that he doesn't remember what the administrator password is. I am not sure what OS it's running. He seems to think it's Windows of some kind. For now let's just assume it's Windows 7 Pro because that's what most of our computers here run. I did some research online, and found at least a couple of programs that would allow me to reset the admin password. Do you guys have any experience with trying this? Any recommendations?

So, while I was using my computer I noticed the back of my case was bulging out so I took the panel off and started to organize the wires, until I accidentally unplugged my main SSD. The computer was on and now when I boot, It boots up windows automatic repair and gives me the option to reset. I really don't have much on my SSD, so I don't mind reinstalling and wiping the drive but when I try to reset it a message telling me that there was a problem with the reset appears. I tried not to touch it too much, because I don't want to damage it (if it even is) any further. I need the computer up and running as soon as possible. It's midterm week! Help! Thanks

Hi guys, After the security breach on the LTT forum I wanted to reset my password. But after submitting my username or email I didn't receive an email to reset my password. I sent an email twice because of this issue but didn't receive an answer. That is why I created a new account to post this. So my question is: can someone help me reset my password? username: arendsoogg Jeroen (aka. arendsoogg)

Hello LTT Community I made a horrible mistake and this post is my last resort in an effort to fix my phone, because I'm out of ideas. I don't worry about losing data or what rom is running as long as it's working to the point where I can rescue it myself What i did: The K3 comes with maleware and bloatware. I wanted to remove it so I rooted my phone in an attempt to delete them. What I did not know was that one of the junk apps does not like that and goes kamikaze when you remove it (Info about it in the link above). The current state: It does not boot, when I try to boot it, it will hang at the lenovo screen. What i tried: Hard and Softreset (Holding the volume rockers at boot) allows me to boot once. After the initialization (accepting terms and stuff) I don't get the home screen. I only get the bar at the top and I can actually open the settings from that. But in the settings the "Apps" option is gone, so I can't start (or don't know how) any of the apps that are still on there (which would help). What I also tried: I tried flashing with Odin3, but the download to the phone won't start, even though I followed this guide step by step. What i can still access: I can access the storage from my computer. I can also put it in USB debugging mode from my computer. I hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance. It would maybe help if you know a way to install apps via USB debugging (I know about the android sdk but I thought there might be an easier way.)

Yes, I know this is a rather common error and there's a giant reddit thread about this. However I have yet to find someone with the same error code on Windows 10 (Only finding ones with Windows 7 with that code). So here I am making this thread. Onto the problem itself. I'm trying to reinstall a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro on a Surface Pro 3 i3 version. The current 10 was upgraded from 8.1. Now I'm experiencing some issues and would like to reinstall for a fresh install to hopefully solve all the little issues I'm having. The error has popped up with every install I tried. Here's what I have done from the beginning. At first I went to the Recovery page and tried to reset the computer that way. I got "Could not find the recovery environment" error. Moving on. I used the Media Creation Tool x64 from Microsoft to create an installer with a USB stick. The surface I have is the 64gb model so there was no way I could squeeze out 20gb free of the main drive. I then unplugged everything off the Surface (including the keyboard), leaving only the USB stick plugged in, and proceeded with the install. The computer restarted to the installing page, it goes to around 9% before restarting itself and restores the previous version of Windows with the error "0x80070070 - 0x2000c The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during APPLY_IMAGE operation" I have tried deleting $Windows.~WS and the Download folder under SoftwareDistribution. I also tried clicking Keep Settings, and all combination of don't find update option. All to no success. Same error code every time. I could try booting from the USB itself and starting the install there and formatting my PC beforehand, but if the install fails I risk bricking the device so this'll be the last resort. I'll continue researching for a solution but if anyone here knows something I can try, that'll be much appreciated! Thank you!

I'm currently towards the end of a totally custom build where I've basically installed a computer inside one of the underneath side panels of a rather large desk. I wanted to have a dual power button per-say. As in one functional power button on the case and another mounted on the desk. Now I've seen external power buttons/switches, but nothing that allows for 2 on/off buttons. At the same time I didn't see any header splitters or similar. So I just decided to do some wire cutting and splicing, THEN I stopped and started thinking. Maybe there's a reason why you can't/shouldn't have 2 power buttons on a computer. If it's not possible to have 2 power switches, the next thing would be a on/off toggle and a more standard on/off button that would be dependent on the aforementioned toggle being on the "on" position. Just more or less looking for feedback or a Y-adapter that will solve my desires.

I recently bought a mouse from a friend a Roccat Kone pure optical and my friend had macros on it but i can not find them and I cant overide them either so i am stuck with the profile that is on the mouse and I cant change the colour of the led or change what the buttons do. So i was wondering if i could factory reset it and remove all profiles from the mouses internal storage. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Hi guys I'm new here at the community, allthough I've been watching a lot of Linus tech tips on YT. I really love the tips and tricks and it seems to be a nice community with lots adn lots of knowledge. With that said, here's my problem:... I have a Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 2 which is stuck on boot, I can't get past the "Tree of life" bootscreen, I don't even get a progress bar that seems to load... It is just the picture with the child reading underneath the tree... And that's it. I have seen the charging icon with a battery a flash and charger illustrated, but as soon as i try top start it notrhing happens. Neither soft reset, hard reset or anything else seems to work. Does somebody here recognise this problem? Any tips & tricks on how to solve it? Best regards Niklas

I want to fully reset my PC because I ran into a problem that I couldn't find an answer too. I reset my PC by using both options it gave me which were "Fully clean this drive" and "Just delete the files" or something i don't remember. Usually it gets pretty close to 100% and then it just says "There was a problem resetting this pc". or "There was a problem resetting this pc. No changes were made." I did a chkdsk and since it finished right when I typed it in I figured that everything on my hard drive was wiped. It's not letting me reset it at all. Also, yes i'm still going to use this pc personally it's just it has run into so many problems I or others can't fix. It's been really frustrating.

So my friend has come to me asking that someone has messed with his Macbook pro (Looks like from 2012) and has added passwords and timers to his account, But he cant disable any of it because he doesn't know the passwords. He cant factory reset it and he wants to keep his data. Anyone got clues to fixing it? His last resort would be to somehow factory reset it. EDIT: His OS is "OS X Yosemite"

GPU overclock resets, and then cannot be applied again until reboot. I have an 7970. It overclocks perfectly to my desired frequencies, BUT after a while the OC started to reset to stock after sleep mode. After that i press the apply button (in MSI afterburner) it "applies" but the frequenices IN FACT do not change. Also i tried it in the Crimson software, again: it "applies", but doesn't I disabled the sleep option, but the problem still persists. Apparently it happens after the monitor shutdown (but i don't know fur sure). A reboot helps, but, ya know, it's not a solution...

Hey guys, I'll make this short and straight forward; I installed a couple of mods in my GTA V folder, edited some files and whatnot. I would like to reset my folders to their standard factory settings. As I am using the physical copy, I inserted the first disk and it made sure the game was running properly, but it did not restore the default folders nor remove the mod folders from the GTA V folder. What can I do to fix this? Thank you in advance! (if you help me fix this, you will receive and additional thank you!) EDIT: I have no desire to re-install the game, if there's a way around that, it would be great.

Hello everyone! So one time I tried overclocking my A10-6800K from 4.1 GHz to 4.2 GHz. This overclock was made in EasyTune 6, which is a tweaking and monitoring software that came with the motherboard. I clicked on the option that said 4.2 GHz(not higher because I had stock cooling) and after that I restarted my PC to have the overclock take effect. But once I turned on my PC, nothing would display. The PC itself was running fine with all the fans in the system were spinning - everything seemed fine but nothing displayed. This motherboard is a Gigabyte F2-A78M-D3H - A78 chipset, which means it supports overclocking, but apparently it didn't like this overclock. After the problem started I just reset to the factory clocks and it worked fine. Did it black screen because I had an incorrect setting in my BIOS set? Did I need to wait for my PC to turn the display back on? Or does this motherboard not handle overclocking good? Feel free to post any comments down below if you can answer this. It would help me a lot

Hello folks. The computer with the specs below has started to only boot after hard reset, two weeks ago. CPU: 3770k MB: Sabertooth Z77 RAM: Corsair Vengeance 4x4GB GPU: EVGA 780ti HDD (Windows): Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB HDD (Storage): 9 disks (Samsungs, WD Reds...) PS: LCPower - LC8850 I did a CMOS reset and turn off all hard drives but it didn't solve the problem. I also changed the power supplier a few days ago and it has been working properly but today it didn't boot again (only after reset). EDIT: I've tried installing the OS in another SSD.. Does anyone happen to know what it may be? Thank you for the support. Cheers.

Sorry if this is in wrong topic but I couldn't post in the forum discussion page for some reason well i use a steam logon to use this website and I am afraid of my steam account being hacked (I own like 300 bucks worth of csgo knives) Is there a need for me to reset my password? I use email confirm and email logon so to trade anything from my account the hacker would need to also have my email and they are different passwords. Do I need to change my email or steam password? D: Thanks for replying

In setting up the instalation for windows 7 onto my ssd, I messed up in that when it came to selecting "custom instal" rather than selecting my ssd and going to the advanced settings and clicking "new" to partition my drive properly, I selected my ssd and hit "next". The instalation began, and I thought everything was going fine until I went back and watched a tutorial on how to instal windows 7, and founf that I did not click "new". Fearing I had messed up horribly I quickly cancelled the instal and tried to do it again, only this time, there were 3 partitions and I had no idea what to do with them, so I deleted one of them, and now I can no longer delete anymore, and I dont have enough space to install windows. So, is there any way to fix this? (aka, clean my hard drive of all partitions, and install windows the proper way) I do have another regular WB black hard drive with nothing on it, and the ssd is a samsung 850 pro if that helps at all.

I have had this issue, as many others have, for a long time and it happens whenever I enter a fullscreen game or boot up my computer and the monitor looks all washed out. I used to have windows 7 and I found a fix on a forum that I can no longer find. The fix was simple; I only had to modify 2 or 3 files with regedit. I installed windows 10 today and the problem is back. Does anyone know of this registry fix or any other fix?

I am trying to completely reset my pc. However, when I try to reset my pc, I get message that says 'unable to reset your pc. A required drive partition is missing'. I am really confused and was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this problem.

Hey guys, I've come to you now as a last resort. I've been having an issue where some sites seem to randomly reset my connection when I try to visit them. I've experienced this issue with Reddit, StackOverflow, Puush and LTT (ironically). I've tried resetting my network using netsh, renewing my IP lease, uninstalling and reinstalling my network drivers, booting with minimal startup, booting into safe mode w/ networking. I've tried on Chrome, Firefox and IE, and the issue still persists. I've tried using my PowerLine kit with another device (my laptop) to see if the issue happens there - it doesn't. I'm able to access those sites fine on all the other devices on my network too. At this point I'm really not sure what to do other than reinstalling Windows. Any ideas?

It's rare that I post on a forum like this seeking help but I am just at a loss, so I turn to you, fellow Linus Tech Tips members. Recently, about 5 months ago, I finally got together my gaming desktop. [Which I will post the parts of for reference after the explanation.] After having it together for about a week or so, I began to notice random freezing while I was browsing the internet using Google Chrome. This immediately sent up red flags as I had only just built the machine and everything at that point was just running off of an SSD with no bottlenecks that I could see happening anywhere. At first I assumed it might be because of the NIC software that came with the mobo, so I got rid of that. Then I assumed it was because of the NIC drivers, so I re-installed them fresh, right from Broadcom, and not from my mobo manufacturer this time. Finally given it was happening only, as far as I could see, in Google Chrome I got rid of every shred of chrome from my PC by uninstalling and then deleting all files and folders associated with it. Then I tried re-installing it, and began getting the same freezing. After that I tired using Firefox and while it seemed to happen less often with Chrome and to a lesser extent, with a the freezing lasting for a shorter time, it was still happening. Since the installation was still pretty fresh and I didn't have much on it, I re-installed Windows. After getting things set up just enough to the point that I needed them to be. I began to browse again and...the same issue began popping up. In both Firefox and Chrome. It's causing me confusion because none of my other internet based applications such as playing games or being on instant message and voice chat programs seem to cause the freeze up to happen when just they are running and the internet browsers aren't open. Another issue I'm having is shortly after the re-install and dealing with this first problem, I started up my PC one day to find a BIOS message telling me that my default settings were loaded. All of my overclock settings in BIOS we're just reset to default. Though, strangely enough, all of my saved profiles were still there. So I just had to load my favorite up, not a huge deal. The problem is that this keeps happening, and it's growing more frequent every day. The time isn't being reset so I'm not drawn to think it's the CMOS battery. The CMOS jumper is in the correct position and since it only happens some of the time I don't think it's that. I'm not sure what could be causing this and I'm not sure if it's related. But my first thought was possible mobo issues given the BIOS issues popping up after the freezing. I've been putting up with the freezing whilst trying to find solutions in various places but now with the BIOS issue I'm just at the end of my patience. So TL:DR; Freezing issues when browsing. Have tried: Uninstalling browsers, drivers, and NIC software. Re-installing Windows. Different Network connections. Different cables. Updating BIOS. My current system configuration is: AMD FX-8350 ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Professional Motherboard Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866 Mhz. [2x 8GB Dual Channel Kit] MSI Reference R9 290 Corsair AX760 Power Supply Samsung 840 Evo SSD And finally a WD Black HDD And I have Win 7 x64 Ultimate running on it. Before it comes up. I got the mobo second hand off of a friend who recently upgraded his build. So RMAing it is not an option. And to make it even shittier, I can't find a new one through any of my normal PC part channels which sort of sucks. Any help that anyone can provide would be very much appreciated. I'm sorry if I maybe put this in the wrong area of the forums and if I did could someone help me out with where to put it?
