  1. I just had a new hard drive put into my seven-year-old system because the old one crashed. Windows 10 had to be reloaded along with all the drivers including my graphics card, ASUS Strix GTX970. For some reason, it keeps thinking that it is hot and cranks up the fan. It started with just slowly heating up, not right after i boot up, it reads 80+ degrees! The GPU Tweak is currently reading 87 degrees. It does not show that the card is cooling and the card does not feel hot. Anyone know what is going on? Is the driver messed up somehow? Thank you for any help!
  2. Hey folks, New here and just wanted to have a discussion with you fine people about my current build and where I'm taking it. **AT THE MOMENT I WILL BE SKIPPING THE CURRENT GENERATION OF GPU's BEING RELEASED AS WE SPEAK** Key: * = to be upgraded Specs: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X case in black (I don't plan on changing this case as I have zero issues with it, and if I did it would be for the white version) ASUS TUF B450m+ Gaming motherboard* AMD Ryzen 5 3600 MSI GeForce RTX 3070 Suprim X 8GB 1TB SSD* DeepCool GAMMAXX cooler* G.Skill Trident Z Neo 4x8GB 3200Mhz CL16 (*?) Stock Phanteks case fans (that need to be de-dusted lol) Corsair HX750i 750w 80+ Platinum PSU My plan for my build over the next couple of weeks: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X ASUS TUF B450m+* AMD Ryzen 5 3600* ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3080 12GB OC EVA Edition 1TB SSD* DeepCool GAMMAXX cooler* G.Skill Trident Z Neo 4x8GB 3200Mhz CL16 (*?) I havent had a reason to change the case fans but maybe you people can twist my arm Corsair HX750i 750w 80+ Platinum PSU I will also switch from my 16:9 1440p monitor to an ultrawide 21:9 3440x1440p monitor, the ASUS ROG STRIX XG349C 34'' UWQHD 1ms 180Hz IPS Gaming Monitor. I am pretty confident in the roadmap so far as the 12GB 3080 will handle ultrawide very nicely and from my research I don't have too much cause for concern about CPU bottlenecking. This brings me to the next phase of the build roadmap. In the case of a partial rebuild in about 6 months, here's phase II: Phanteks Enthoo Evolv X ASUS ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING WIFI II Motherboard (I cannot use a LAN cable for where my PC is at the moment) AMD Ryzen 7 5800X ASUS ROG Strix GeForce RTX 3080 12GB OC EVA Edition 2TB M.2 NVM SSD (recommendations please!) EKWB EK-AIO Elite 360 D-RGB Liquid Cooler G.Skill Trident Z Neo 4x8GB 3200Mhz CL16 (*?) Better case fans (recommendations please!) ASUS ROG Strix Thor 850w 80+ platinum PSU Sorry about the long read. Love to hear everyone's thoughts. Thanks, P
  3. I did this for fun but never thought to post it here, only posted it on a subreddit. It was a full rebuild to mint condition just for fun because I noticed it in Stargate SG1 while binge watching one weekend a long time ago. Took a while to get all the parts and housing pieces that were new old stock to rebuild it. Only parts I didn't replace was the motherboard, lcd, and dvd-rom drive. Then when it was finished finally, well the world drama started and I couldn't get it signed. But eventually a couple months ago I finally got it signed. It was a fun project, even managed to find some original video artwork used in the show that moves. Not exactly what I'd call retro hardware but getting close now days. It was a lot of fun, lot of shopping, and even plane rides and hotel stay involved. But meh I'm a geek, so it's just all in a days work. DELL XPS PP14L M170 (Came with a 2Ghz cpu and 6800 ultra) Upgraded to max spec; Intel Pentium M 780 SL7VB 2.27GHz 533MHz 2MB Cache GeForce GO 7800 GTX 256MB 2GB RAM MSATA to IDE adapter with a Samsung 256GB SSD
  4. I just recently got a new motherboard (I'll tell if anyone even comments) and cannot find a connector for this cord with 9 pin slots. Any help would be a godsend so please if you're a geek or some shit on this please hit me up
  5. Hey, today I rebuilt my computer in a new case, I also reapplied thermal paste since the one in the CPU was dry, but after that I am getting some weird issues on both Windows and Linux, after some time of using the pc the CPU Usage goes insanely high, audio gets choppy and the pc freezes, It's not overheating as the CPU is running at around 35 to 40 degrees when the audio gets choppy I notice on windows audiodg.exe CPU usage increases drastically, it's not an issue with audiodg as it will happen with discord, edge etc too, I have no idea what could be causing this, it's my first time assembling a pc, everything is correct, the only thing that is not plugged in is a fan because I am missing a fan header on my motherboard and a 2 pin FAN panel connector (for the rgb fans that my case doesn't come with) I changed the sata ports thinking it may be an issue with the sata connector but that didn't fix the issue, the drives work normally, I checked my ram, also fine, I don't know why my cpu would be affected by a simple case swap... I don't know what to do anymore...
  6. Specs:i5 7400 4gb ram 180watt psu Half a size of an microtower Metal cabinet The cabinet is made of metal and the power supplied an only support a gt 710 which has a bottleneck.when the pc heats up the metal cabinet takes all the heat and theres isnt much airflow and when the cabinet heats up the pc starts laggin and when restrated the pc tries to remove the whole heat with a dell custom cpu cooler(kind of intel stock cooler).thinking of rebuildin the whole pc just without wasting money for the processor or is it good to build a new pc with new parts(i highly dont recommend this pc from dell if u wanna use it for gaming)its been used for 4yrs by me can you guys give reviews?
  7. I have a:- Intel i5 7400 12gb ram 2633mhz Gt 710 (Dell vostro 3268) The cabinet is made up of metal and sometimes the cpu fan runs high cause the the cabinet metal is hot.mostly its a half size of a microtower pc and i even have some bottleneck issue with my gpu Would upgrade to:- Gtx 1050ti Cabinet Rebuild :- ryzen 7 5800x(i dont the correct name, but its the highest varient of r7 in 5000seris) 32gigs of 3600mhz ram colorful rtx 3070 a liquid cooler 750watt psu(if gpu upgraded in future) uses:- architecture(auto cad, 3dsmax),programming,gaming
  8. What I am asking for is an assessment on if I should just scrap it and build a brand new rig, swap out some components, or maybe reconfigure or repair what I already have to get the most bang for the buck. Current components list is below. Thoughts, concerns, and recommendations are all appreciated. Thanks again LTT Forum Community! Budget & Location Ideal budget would be around 3.5k but am flexible if it makes sense. Best case scenario would be recommendations on just swapping components and using most of what I currently have. Of course I am trying to make the overall best decision regarding budget but am not afraid to spend a little more if its worth it. Admittedly, I have not been current with the community or PC building in general so I really have no idea what parts are good, current, or to be avoided. I know that GPUs are expensive and hard to find right now but that's about the extent of my current knowledge. Prices would best be listed in $USD. Thank you. Aim I use it as a general desktop but also some gaming when I have time and hopefully some streaming in the future. I play Skyrim, Witcher 3, etc. The best case scenario is I would really like to get it to be able to run "Star Citizen" but it can't in its current state (it is really laggy when I try to run it). Monitors ASUS VG278Q 27" Full HD 1080P 144Hz 1ms Eye Care G-Sync Compatible Adaptive Sync Gaming Monitor with DP HDMI DVI I am currently only running the one, but would like to be able to run two. Although, the onboard sound is a bit pathetic for how quiet it is. Why are you upgrading? Backstory: I build the majority of my current rig back in 2013 (using recommendations from this very forum). In 2019 I wanted to add a second GPU and get a "tune up" by a professional, when I did so I also had to upgrade to the current PSU because it wasn't supplying enough power to the existing rig and actually ended up damaging my SSD as a result, which I also replaced with the current one listed. Fast-forward to late 2020 / early 2021: I moved across country and I boxed up my rig pretty well and it was in a non-climate controlled storage unit for several months. When I finally got it out and set back up, there was some slight mold on the case but that was it. However, now it seems like it is running way too hot and will on occasion auto-restart because of a failure somewhere. 9. Good Afternoon, I recently rebuilt my PC in a new case with new fans. I switched from 6 Corsair's HD fans to 9 Lian Li's Uni SL 120 fans. After the rebuild when I power my PC on it starts up, after a second or 2 it shuts off, and then boots normally. Could someone please advise what could be the problem and what I could try to fix it? I’d like to run the games at 1440p with at least 144hz at high settings, I’m thinking about trippel monitor setup but using the other ones as secondary for discord and YouTube, in the future use all screens for more demanding workloads (I’m transpiring audit). In addition I’d want to keep the build aesthetic, thinking about making a black and white theme with cord extension (never done a proper one, so all tips about extension and where to buy them are appreciated. My thoughts were on an B550, R5 3600x as bare minimum upgrades but It’s way above my pay grade to decide. Thanks for taking your time, a yolly little fellow !
  12. I recently moved my PC into a new case and got everything hooked up and it boots up. I verified everything is properly connected. But it will not post. Everything was working before the move but now the POST LEDs go to the dram yellow for a few seconds and then no status lights what so ever. Normally, the order would be Red(CPU), Yellow (DRAM), White(VGA) and then Green(Boot Drive) and would boot normally after that. In the event of an issue the corresponding LED would stay lit, but now the Yellow is on for 3-4 seconds and then is off with no more indication as to what is happening. Any and all help would be appreciated. System: CPU- i7-7700k MoBo- ASUS Strix Z270E RAM- 8GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000MHz GPU- EVGA 1060 6GB SSC PSU- Corsair 750w semi-modular
  13. So.. first some history: This thing started out as an acer prebuilt desktop. i've bought it when my main desktop was starting to seriously fall behind, and i needed a quick solution. It's life as a desktop was not too long lived, and it was phased out maybe a year and a half later, and found its new purpose as my "home server". All in all, this will be the fifth "reincarnation" of this box, and the second major rebuild. Fact is, the case is staying, because as long as it's the same case, i do not need to defend it's purpose, as the entire household is 'used' to its presence. the primary reason for this thread.. is forcing myself to *not* half-ass the rebuild for once. the before of this rebuild, starting out with the exterior: One endless frustration.. is the upside down power supply.. which is just a result of the case design, and also the first indication this prebuilt has had a weird life... The 'before' parts list: - the original case of the prebuilts, its already missing some parts here and there that were in the way, but from the outside is essentially original. - the original corei7-4770 - noctua NH-D9L cpu cooler, that replaced the original coolermaster 'block of aluminium with a fan'. - asus B85M-E motherboard, that replaced the acer OEM board when the pcie slot decided to crap the bed. - 4x8GB corsair vengeance, totaling 32GB DDR3-1600 - mushkin triactor 480GB SSD as boot drive, which is showing signs of wear, so it's time for change. - the original DVD drive. - some noctua fans - a refurbished HP 4-port gigabit ethernet card, with a radial fan taped to the front. - a seasonic prime titanium 650 watt power supply, because overkill - 4 WD Red 3TB hard drives, in a linux software raid5 array, which has been lacking in reliability. Including, a picture of the crammed interior: The upgrade list: - a HighPoint RocketRAID 2840A raid card - a new boot SSD, staying on the cheapskate course upgrading from a mushkin triactor to a kingston A400 240GB. - 4 extra kingston A400 240GB SSD's, to be put in a RAID0 array for blazing fast active data.. on a platform that doesnt do nvme storage. - some customized cables, bits and parts, and a ridiculous plan. The ridiculous plan: Writing this on a saturday evening, i've got the next week off, and the plan is to have this thing completed before the end of my week off. topics to be touched on during the rebuild: hardware: - the rebuild itself, obviously, because it needs some prettying up. - the ugly plastic bodge keeping the DVD drive in place. - the upside down power supply. - the RAID card, and propper cooling for said card. - cable management, and most likely partially custom wiring. - a slimmer front fan, so there's a touch more space between the drives and the PCIE cards. - more pretty. not 'average gaming build on the forums with RGB' pretty, but an understated clean pretty. software: - a reinstall of the OS, for now xubuntu is staying, but the SSD needs to go, and the install has gotten rather messy over time. - AUTOMATIC backups this time.. i havent fixed my backup scheduling since i got the 4x 3TB drives - replacing the "every share is mapped/forced to a single user" system with actual account/user management. - propper instancing of the game servers i run on this thing, including implementing minecraft servers as a system service. - probably some more shit will come up along the way. Some numbers, and the first update: "Day 0": my SSD's and the fans will arrive on monday, but there's already things to be done. i've taken two backups of my storage array, the plan is not to restore from these backups, but to create a new folder structure and migrate things into that folder structure. did some "initial" performance testing using gnome's builtin disk benchmarking utility, all tests in this thread will be done on the same settings: 100 samples of 10MiB, and 1000 random access samples. old SSD results: Read: 476MB/s Write: 404MB/s access time: 0.03ms old software raid array: Read: 216MB/s Write: 24MB/s access time: 16.62ms hardware raid with the 4x 3TB drives: (the array is still initializing, so these numbers are in a less than ideal scenario) Read: 205MB/s Write: 65MB/s access time: 19.66ms
  14. I want to rebuild my father's old emachines computer as a sleeper pc, but on a budget. If anyone has ideas, suggestions, advice, or have a build that is similar, then I would be glad to listen. As you can see in the pictures of the computer, the machine has an Intel Celeron 325 D processor, a 40GB hard drive, a Combo Drive (it reads both cd's and dvd's), and 256MB of DDR SDRAM. It will not POST due to a broken pin on the cpu, but all the other systems, (including the mouse, keyboard, and monitor), seem to be in working order. It currently runs Windows XP.
  15. So I am relatively new to the computer building scene and just acquired an old gaming rig. I want to upgrade it as much as possible (if possible) and may be willing to straight up just build a new computer in the case if necessary. right now it’s running i7 Intel processor X58A-UD3R mother board GeForce GTX-460 6gb of ram 1000W power supply AIO liquid cooling (probably from 2013) I don’t remember the brand or any other specs because I don’t have it on hand at the moment. is anyone able to help out a beginner with some upgrades? EDIT: It is a first gen i7 sadly
  16. So I recently built my first PC in about 15years and it didn't take long for me to find flaws (mainly due to my lack of research). I found that with the setup I'd built had horrible idle temps around 47-50degC so I have rebuilt it. Case: Corsair Carbide spec delta Sahara P75 White PSU: EVGA 750 BQ CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 COOLER: Stock Game Storm Captain 240pro V2 MOBO: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite RAM: 32GB HyperX Fury 3200 GPU: Gigabyte GTX 1660 6GB oc SSD: Sabrent Rocket Q 1TB M.2 Case Fans: 6x beHere ARGB 120mm 4x front intake, 2x rear exhaust The Corsair case I was using had awful airflow as the case front is almost completely enclosed. Idle temps are now around the mid 30s and the system is nice and quiet. I've yet to test it under load and gaming but the massive idle temp drop does give me hope. I also used Arctic MX-4 in place of the pre applied paste on the AIO. So between better airflow, 240mm rad and MX-4 I've managed to drop the temps by 10-12degC
  17. I was getting annoyed with the aweful cable management when i messed with drive configuration, so I finally rebuilt the computer when I started to do some BSEL mod testing on my cpu. It's a core 2 quad Q6600 2.4ghz with a rx480 and a 600w PSU. 4gb of ram. DDR 2, 666mhz. Total of 1tb 788gb of storage.1tb hhd, 500gb hhd, 160gb hhd, and a 128gb boot SSD. Its not great, but cable managed pretty well, I think. Before.
  18. So my grandpa had a nice XPS 420 that he bought around 08. I've had it for a few years now and it has stopped working. I'd like to be able to get it running again as a project to do during this summer. Can someone who has some experience building pc from that time help me out a bit.

I don't need anything insane and if possible I would like to keep using what I can, mostly because it all still works fine. I already have all peripherals and a monitor. I just don't know if it's even possible (or worth it) to upgrade without starting from scratch. I thought about upgrading the graphics card, but I dunno if it would make sense with my CPU being wha it is and vice-versa, the CPU socket is pretty old. Then I would have to upgrade the power supply...I just don't know where to start . Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

  21. Budget (including currency): 300$ cad Country: Canada Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: GTA 5, COD MW, Premier e Pro Other details I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on what I should do with my pc. I currently have an am3+ motherboard with an amd fx-8350 with a be quiet cpu fan,700watt psu, 8gb ddr3 and an asus gtx 1070 turbo. My cpu is very old and is not great for playing most games. So should I sell everything or just upgrade my motherboard, cpu and ram. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  22. I am ready to swap out all the major components of my pc, it's sitting on my living room table now. As is the assembled new parts. My intention was always to refresh windows as part of the upgrade. Should I do this before or after I install the new parts?
  23. A prayer sent up to the gods of techedness, I own a windows surface 3, and I wish I had seen Linus Rex's review first, but alas, I did not. My co worker gave me His 100% identical Surface, with a busted screen. So I open it up, and all the components are wrapped in that silver stuff, and read about how hard it was going to be to "finish" taking out the old surface and adding a new one. So, that wasn't gonna happen, so Im left with all these components, and I would like to know if I can use anything Inside the other Surface? I want to make a "super surface", originally the idea was to make it a 2 sided touch screen double surface, velcroed together or something, but I saw how hard the screen was to fix, I I felt making an animal sacrifice to the tech gods would be a good idea first. So according to LTT scripture (old testament) I set fire to a fire wire PCI card and an old corded ps2 mouse. Sorry, for the lame sacrifice , we are still poor in the Appalachian mountains of Tennessee, , but not all as stupid as our governor. I'd like to do something with this before our governor makes me go back to work risking my families life serving the tourists who come to see Dollywood, Dixie Stampede, and maybe the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. So all the stupid people jacked up on wood grain alcohol and tidepods are coming here for their Covidication, All hail Xenu and Linus too I apologise for the commentary. Zero
  24. Hello all! It is thanks to this forum and to many of you that I got into PC building and gaming. I love this community, you guys help me build an amazing PC back in end of 2015 start of 2016. She has treated me well with little to no issues. However as time has gone on I have upgraded a component here, a component there, and now have a PC that has a GPU that is being bottlenecked by other components. I want to upgrade, with a budget of about 1k, given I already have an amazing 1080ti. So without further life story, here is the spec list of my build, with what is original and upgraded.•OG CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4 GHz•OG CPU Cooler: Rosewill RCX-Z775-LP 33.5 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (this cooler is old and dirty and bearing seems to be going out on it, makes a lot of noise)•OG Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-Gaming 5 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (2 sata ports have died on this board since I originally got it, but otherwise she is doing fine. I like the fact that this MOBO has SO many USB ports on it. It has 4x3.0 and 4x2.0. I use all the 2.0 for peripherals, and about 1-2 of the 3.0 for my monitors usb pass through. But obviously some things are more important in life then lots of USB ports.•OG RAM/Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Z Series 16 GB (4 x 4 GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (4x4 running in quad channel, they are in xmp mode and have only been for 2ish years now)•OG Storage: Seagate 4 TB 3.5" 5900RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive•Upgraded/Added Storage: 970 Evo SSD 1TB M.2 NVMe + with a PCIe 3.0 x4 adapter due to M.2 slot on the mobo not being faster then x2 NVMe: M.2 NVME to PCIe 3.0 x4 Adapter with Aluminum Heatsink Solution https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JJTVGZM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Zm4tEbWTBQG2A•Video Card/GPU: Originally a EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4 GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card but have since upgraded about a year ago to a EVGA Geforce GTX 1080 ti sc2 hybrid 11GB RAM. Overkill for this system I know, but I was preparing myself for a upgrade and bought it at a VERY good price new thanks to it being a job perk of mine.•OG Case: NZXT Phantom 410 ATX Mid Tower Case with 3-4 fans added to it to make it essentially a wind tunnel. 1 of the usb 2.0 headers on it never worked to begin with. Case has been scratched and banged up and very slightly bent on the bottom due to it being packed into a suitcase and relocated. The back fan is cracked, so it makes grinding noises, also seems a bearing is going out in it, makes grindy, vibratey noises until it’s been spinning for awhile, then it shuts up and behaves. So i think i want to get a new case as well.•OG PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA GS 550 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply•OG Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer•Monitors: Primary 27” 2560x1440 Dell G-Sync monitor running at 1ms 144hz on Display Port. Secondary 24” 1920x1080 Dell Monitor running at 2ms 60hz on hdmi. Wouldn’t mind upgrading my main monitor to 4K, but honestly I love my current main monitor, do not like my secondary much. OS: Win10 Pro (here is a suggestion i got for an upgrade, however it is only dual channel ram, and not many usb ports which yes i know is not really that important due to being able to use hubs. I was also suggested a x470 mobo.) That is my current setup. My goal here is to salvage as much as I can from this build to build something better and newer and more modern by using the best of what I have now such as my GPU and storage. I have roughly 1k in mind as my budget with maybe being able to spend 1.5k if it is a big price to performance difference. I have extremely high end peripherals so I don’t need to upgrade anything there as they have all been recently upgraded. The reason I need help with rebuilding is I had help from some of you all when I first built this, and sadly I’m not really up to date with what is considered great or good. I play a LOT of Apex Legends competitively, keeping my settings as low as possible to max frame rate, while playing games such as RDR2 and other AAA single player titles on high as possible settings while still getting smooth frames for just causal enjoyment. I do not use my PC for any heavy work, such as video editing, video encoding, or anything of the sorts. Just normal every day usage, browsing, downloading, with gaming as a huge focus. I know I’m essentially asking you all to do my work for me and virtually build me something, but I have tried to build an upgrade myself and just have kept getting lost in current hardware and confused as to what is good and bad and worth it, or just snake oil. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your time!
