Hi all, I’m interested in building a VR set up for under $4000. I need to purchase a PC and am open to both laptop and desktop options. What configuration might maximize immersion/graphics quality? I’d like to use VR for gaming and general recreation. How does the Oculus Rift compare to the Vive Pro, immersion wise? VR and PCs fall outside my wheelhouse. I welcome all thoughts. Thank you.

Hey guys, I've been planning this build for a while (delayed gratification + time to save up!) and plan on purchasing it sometime in January. I'm located in the United States and my goal is to create a gaming PC with a budget of $1600 for the PC and Monitor. I would like to play games at 1440p running at least 60hz, as well as VR games with the Oculus Rift. PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel - Core i5-8400 2.8 GHz 6-Core Processor ($215.85 @ Amazon) CPU Cooler: NZXT - Kraken M22 Liquid CPU Cooler ($82.58 @ Amazon) Motherboard: MSI - Z370-A PRO ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($99.99 @ Amazon) Memory: G.Skill - Aegis 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory ($109.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Samsung - 860 Evo 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($52.99 @ Newegg) Video Card: Zotac - GeForce GTX 1070 8 GB Mini Video Card ($329.99 @ B&H) Case: NZXT - H500 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($69.99 @ B&H) Power Supply: EVGA - 500 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply ($37.99 @ Monoprice) Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit ($98.99 @ Amazon) Monitor: Dell - S2716DG 27.0" 2560x1440 144 Hz Monitor ($439.00 @ Amazon) Total: $1537.36 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2018-12-06 15:57 EST-0500 I've included a monitor choice (single monitor, 1440p) in the build since it will factor into the budget. I'm not worried about a keyboard or mouse recommendation as I will be purchasing those separately after the PC has been built. Please let me know what you guys think, in particular if there are any noticeable bottlenecks in the system. In my experience bottlenecks give me the most trouble; having a mismatched GPU and CPU has been an issue in the past. Thanks in advance!

Buy mixed reality glasses on Amazon: http://geni.us/JzlsH Ever since Google Glass, we've been skeptical about Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality wearable glasses.. but could these help you watch Netflix or do covert gaming on a plane or college dorm?

Buy Acer Windows Mixed Reality Headset Amazon: http://geni.us/iJ1E6 Newegg: http://geni.us/qrT7 Windows Mixed Reality platform is here and we got our hands on an Acer headset..but can it compete with the Rift and Vive?

I cannot believe this is real! This is every Mario Kart fan's dream come true. Mario Kart in VR, throwing items, dodging piranhas, so epic!! They say VR is hard to promote, because unless you’re actually doing it yourself it’s hard tell what all the fuss is about. Well, not with Mario Kart Arcade GP VR it’s not. The game uses Valve’s HTC Vive headset, and although you have a real steering wheel to use you can activate items with one of the controllers just by raising your hand. The Arcade GP games aren’t by Nintendo and so there’s often slight differences to the usual formula. In this case that includes items hanging from balloons, instead of being in blocks, and a new hammer weapon. Mario Kart VR is heading to Bandai Namco’s new VR Zone arcade in Shinjuku, Tokyo. . . With no commentary, only "ingame footage" :

Dear People, Recently I did an outdoor event at a carnival using a few Vive Headsets as a VR Arcade. During the event our systems worked REALLY well except for a few specific times of the day. Is there some way on Vive or app to turn on the front camera or some kind of inside the headset that would show you where the headset was picking up IR signals from so we could track down what's causing the tracking problem? Maybe something that looks like the 3D front camera view but showed red colored lines or dots where it was getting interference from? Also, is there very much potential for the HMD for the Vive to overheat sometimes and cause any sort of problems? Extra info on what problems we were having: -Most of the mid day sun didn't cause a problem, but we started noticing tracking problems with some sunlight leaks coming into our tents. In one case it was one headset having a major problem at 2 or 3 specific points in the room scale. We ended up finding out that a car parked about a half a mile away was reflecting sunlight from it's windshield and just enough of it was shining through the trees to go through the front entrance of our tent (Entrance was facing away from the sun too which is why we were so confused for so long). -Another issue we sometimes had was tracking issues because of tiny pin holes in the top of our tent, or sometimes just worn down spots that weren't blocking sun. Cheers, Canto666Hades

Buy PSVR on Amazon: http://geni.us/WuXBSb With PSVR sales "on track" according to Sony, will this product be remembered as the first mainstream introduction of "good VR?"

I was wondering where vr technology would be in 10 years time? What areas would you like to see improved? I read this article (Virtual Reality Technology – What Lies Ahead?) where they suggest that in the future it may be possible to 'upload' your brain into a vr world! What does everybody think? Personally I would like to be be able to feel things :-)

https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4dq00o/what_worked_for_me_extending_pc_vive_30_ft/ Further down in the comments, another redditor had success with an active USB cable: I just thought I'd share this since I know some people would rather have a PC in their office/bedroom while playing the Vive in a more spacious place like their living room. Enjoy.

Hello, I am planning on building a VR Ready PC. I have picked out the part I would like to use in the build, but I am trying to cut the cost down a bit. I was thinking that I can cut the cost by changing the CPU Cooler, Ram, and Case. I was planning on getting, but I don't know what to get in place of what I have picked out already, and I can't really go from the 8 core CPU to a 4 core CPU because I run Virtualbox/Vmware. I don't really need the power supply, I have one that I can use, and the hard drives, I will remove from the system I have now. I don't really what to get a lower cost CPU, or Motherboard, because they go together like bread and butter and I was raised to never be a cheapskate when it come to a CPU, and motherboard, because by the time you're ready to upgrade your motherboard or CPU, it old and nearly double the cost, then it was a year ago. So can anyone help with reducing my total price tag [PCPartPicker part list](http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RTw6TW) / [Price breakdown by merchant](http://pcpartpicker.com/p/RTw6TW/by_merchant/) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [Intel Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80662i76700k) | $368.18 @ SuperBiiz **CPU Cooler** | [Cooler Master Nepton 240M 76.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-cpu-cooler-rln24m24pkr1) | $147.67 @ NCIX US **Motherboard** | [Asus SABERTOOTH Z170 MARK 1 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-sabertoothz170mark1) | $259.51 @ Amazon **Memory** | [Avexir Core Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/avexir-memory-avd4uz124001608g2co) | $79.11 @ Newegg **Video Card** | [EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB Superclocked ACX 2.0 Video Card](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-video-card-04gp42974kr) | $333.68 @ NCIX US **Case** | [Cooler Master MasterCase Pro 5 ATX Mid Tower Case](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/cooler-master-case-mcy005pkwn00) | $132.36 @ Amazon **Power Supply** | [EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply](http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr) | $90.76 @ NCIX US | *Prices include shipping, taxes, rebates, and discounts* | | Total (before mail-in rebates) | $1456.27 | Mail-in rebates | -$45.00 | **Total** | **$1411.27** | Generated by [PCPartPicker](http://pcpartpicker.com) 2016-04-04 08:47 EDT-0400 |

VR Here!-VR There! VR everywhere.. Virtual Reality is possibly the most anticipated piece of consumer entertainment technology of this decade. However, I'm still struggling to "see it"..(Non-intentional pun!) I think the idea of VR is exciting from a general entertainment perspective but I just can't imagine us all sitting in a room with box over our faces in the near future.. Maybe I'm just so used to actual displays that I think it seems ridiculous.. So I hand the question to you. Do you think VR will completely take over? Do you think VR has a place in the E-Sports industry? (again, I can't imagine a theater filled with people staring at nothing..) Will VR flop like 3D has?

A studio by the name of Sólfar secures $2.1M to recreate Everest in stunning detail and scale. Sólfar are teaming up with RVX, Nordic’s leading visual effects and animation house, to deliver the experience to VR headsets next year. I believe experiences like this is where VR really demonstrates its belonging. If done correctly, I could see immersive experiences like this being very successful. Video (not sure why it isn't embedding)

So I am a bit stuck with choosing a graphics card for my next build in part that I would like to purchase a VR headset to support its development when they release next year, however I am stuck between the Fury x and 980ti, but not because of performance, but what I would like to know is how the features stack up against each other. I know Nvidia has been working on its multi-res shading and asynchronous time warp, and how AMD has it's liquid VR developments, but how do they actually translate into an enjoyable VR experience and which card is worth my $650?

Apperantly, Microsoft is working on a Virtual Reality HMD called Project Irides. Irides uses the Kahawai technology which offloads some of the GPU rendering to the cloud and then streams it back to the headset with higher quality graphics. They have tested this technological concept with Doom 3 as their testing workload due to its fast game play and according to Microsoft, the participants loved it and said that it was impressive and there was a noticeable difference in the quality, latency and overall experience. Looking at how everyone is impressed with the Hololens, I am pretty sure Microsoft is going to integrate this Kahawai tech and make a super awesome Augmented/Virtual Reality HMD. What do you guys think? Project Irides is a software project btw. Thanks @AlexGoesHigh Article Source: http://www.neowin.net/news/irides-microsofts-project-to-create-a-better-virtual-reality-headset More info on Kahawai: http://www.neowin.net/news/microsofts-kahawai-is-a-step-forward-for-cloud-based-game-streaming

VR specific Android? Say it ain't so, but it seems like its going to be a thing. While I don't particularly agree with the idea that we're going to have yet another version of Android that Google won't maintain beyond giving it out to OEMs, i do think its a good idea that Google look at Androids usability as it stands and see if they can improve the VR experience of the OS. http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/03/07/report-google-has-assigned-engineers-to-build-a-version-of-android-just-for-virtual-reality/

For anyone who has experienced a Atmos system in a theatre or even at home, you'll know that it does leverage your extra speakers better and it can sound better than your traditional 5.1/7/1 setup, you just need the tech to support it. Dolby going for VR is great news, immersive video is NOTHING without the sound to back up that experience, and Dolby tends to not get lazy on the sound aspect of things. http://www.engadget.com/2015/03/01/dolby-atmos-comes-to-vr/

Hi, Decided to start new topic on this instead of writing in the already existing Project Reality thread. (link) What is it? It's a standalone game on the Unreal 4 engine from the developers of the Battlefield 2 mod called Project Reality. (link) Trailer. (link) 30th of may 2015 update: Project Reality mod just became FREE standalone game and you no longer need Battlefield 2 to play it. Check it out. What it is all about? To play as a team in a tactical manner using mics for communication and having massive amounts of fun! You have all the military equipment available to be used, such as infantry, armor, jets and helicopters etc. Keywords: realistic, teamwork forcing/endorcing, mic communication, tactical, mature, fun, time consuming. This is a special sort of news and I decided to post it and share it with you because it is game/social related and the idea struck me as 'crazy' at first but upon further reading I understood why he did it. "...it has made them aware of a conflict that even many adults do not fully understand". "Parents have a responsibility to teach their children the truth" I don't think I would bring my children to see the remnants of war and what it means to real people in the real world up close. However living in oblivion unaware what is happening around the world is not an option for me and will not be for my children. I think watching a documentary on the same would be I would go. That should at least make them aware and more understanding of the real world. And what age is appropriate to try to educate the youth? I think 10/11 might actually be perfect age to do it. Anytime later and they have already learned about guns, sex and rock n' roll from someone/somewhere else. Please, do share your opinion. Kudos to you Carl-Magnus Helgegren! Read more here (original source(s)): http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/relationships/fatherhood/11030428/Beyond-the-call-of-duty-how-to-teach-your-kids-about-the-reality-of-war.html http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2722609/Swedish-father-fed-sons-obsessions-violent-Call-Duty-computer-game-takes-SYRIA-guns-worked.html Note, I sure am not against FPS games (unlike Mr. Helgegren). I am pro AWARENESS and pro KNOWLEDGE.

This article, it radiates with such truth that I had to share how absurd and down right idiotic the entire SJW ilk vs the gaming community truly is. No truer words in an article on the subject would ever be written in such a pain painstakingly obvious way. Members of LTT, take heed. All of the fighting in the past over such things, the swearing, scratching and occasional biting. Put all that aside and please read this article. It is probably the most bias free slice of reality regarding the subject you'd ever read. http://nastythingssaidabout.wordpress.com/2014/08/26/the-terrible-misogyny-in-the-games-industry/ I wish I could convey my thoughts so clearly and convincingly. Read it all the way through and you'll feel as if a light switch has gone off. It's that brutally honest.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/236448256/petal-fan-for-virtual-reality Finally a device to simulate wind! I personally have been waiting for a product like this since I first saw the Oculus Rift. They're asking for a funding total of at least $35'000 and there's only 29 days left after I post this so pledge now! I really want a consumer release of this!!

Hi. The guys from the Node youtube channel have started a very interesting kickstarter project. Link to project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/controlvr/control-vr-motion-capture-for-vr-animation-and-mor In their latest youtube video, they are already using this working setup to play multiplayer games together. Have a look: It looks really awesome in my opinion.
