So to make a long story short I have 4 8GB sticks of g-skill DDR4 3600Mhz CL 18 in my PC... well had. Now i'm down to 2 sticks. I'm not sure how but 2 of my sticks failed. The strange thing is first I bought 16GB and then a few months later added another 16GB kit. The weird thing is that 1 stick from both kits failed. The other weird thing is that both sticks that failed were in the same slot/channel. I've personally never had ram fail on me before but this seems quite odd. It seems like something about the sticks being in the specific slots caused them to fail however I cant see why that would be the case. I figured the sticks that failed would likely be from the same kit... maybe they were marginal from the factory and gave up after a few years but it seems odd that one from each kit would fail and that they wouldn't be from the same kit. I'm mildly worried that there's something wrong with my ram slots or the memory controller on my 5800X but I have no idea how to know for sure. I ran a memory test and figured out what sticks were bad. Now i'm just running the good sticks in the slots the motherboard recommends I use. Should I replace the dead ram? I don't want to replace it and have it fail again. Maybe I should buy a new 16GB X2 kit and use that instead? Yall think this is just a coincidence or possible bad memory controller? Suggestions? Also if anyone wants more info feel free to ask. Just curious to know what you guys think.

Hey there everyone! Thanks to some folks here in the forum (huge thanks to @YoungBlade) I've been guided in my upgrade to AMD (first time ever touching an AMD PC). Even if I already have 2x16GB 2666MHz RAM in my current PC and could very well transfer it to the new platform, I wanna see what upgrade I can make which would be cheap and far better than what I have. Maybe 3600MHz? I don't know anything about timing or anything so all help is welcome. Would prefer keeping the same amount of memory, and the cooler I'm getting allows up to 62mm memory modules. I'm welcome for new and used options, either Amazon or eBay, or just basic recommendations based on your local used market, might have similar deals. If there isn't something I can score for less than $45, then I'll just wait for that specific upgrade since I'm already doing a ~$300 upgrade and my wallet hurts. Any comments welcome!

DRAM issue on Z270 board, no post, run out of options...
naazynaaz posted a topic in Troubleshooting
Trying to bring new life into my old main machine parts (these have been for the most part sitting in the open so for a while ive been skeptical of them even working). Recently used them in a build but cannot get it to post with a DRAM failure light. Here are the parts: Motherboard: MSI Z270 SLI Plus RAM: Corsair Vengeance LED 16 GB 2666mhz CL16 CPU: Intel Core i7 7700k PSU: Corsair SF850L Case: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Mini I got the build done relatively quickly but as mentioned above the system doesnt seem to make it past DRAM checks in order to boot, ive been browsing all over the internet for solutions. I have: Reseated the RAM, removed one DIMM, inserted them into one of the other 3 slots available, reboot, repeat still DRAM light. Tried known working DDR4 memory (in my current machine) still no boot, same error. Tried a brand new kit of LPX memory, still no boot with the same troubleshooting steps as above. Reseated the CPU Cooler as posts online say Z270 boards are abit fragile with motherboard bend?? but still no boot. Removed the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, left it out for 5minutes, placed it back in, still no boot. Rubbing the sticks with rubber??? (yes im desperate). Ive attached in this post images and video of the build as well as the EZ Debug LEDs displaying DRAM error, to be clear the lights flash CPU then DRAM and STAY on DRAM for a couple seconds and reset, from the motherboard manual this indicates a RAM failure of some sort. Not sure at this point what to do as im thinking this could be a motherboard issue. Any tips or guidance would be helpful. Cheers. EDIT: No GPU as i wanted to use these old parts/pc as a home lab to try somethings out on it. 20240414_011940.mp4- 8 replies

After the recent Windows 11 update, I got a BSOD and my Legion 5 15ach6h stopped posting. To troubleshoot I tried: Battery disconnect and power drain Removing SSDs Tried disconnecting the CMOS battery (Destroyed the connector. :'() Removing RAMs (One of them turned out to be faulty) I am not quite sure but I think you can replace the CMOS connector. But is the SO-DIMM slot on my laptop fixable? Here's the screenshot of my update history,

Hi all! Im dealing with a very annoying issue at the moment. Out of nowhere, I can't play some games anymore because when I do, the RAM usage skyrockets to 100% which causes massive frame drops and makes the games unplayable. This problem started occurring out of nowhere and I have no idea how to fix this. I've tried to lower the in-game settings to the absolute lowest but even then, the RAM usage is 100% so I think there is something more happening here. I've already tried to monitor which processes use the RAM, but it is just the game that just keeps using more and more to the point of almost crashing. The specs of my PC are an AMD Radeon 7800XT, Ryzen 5 5800X3D, 16Gb DDR4 3200MHz RAM, B450 Tomahawk Max. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I'm looking to make use of the 2 open RAM slots on my motherboard with the overall goal to increase speeds. I just finished my PC build in Feb. so I'm completely new this and with all my research I've thoroughly confused myself and appreciate any insights and feedback. Would it be better to purchase another identical 2x16GB DDR-3200 RAM set, totaling in 64GB of RAM? Or go with 4x8GB DDR-3600 RAM set that would keep me at 32GB of RAM but with DDR-3600 speed? It's my understanding that more RAM doesn't always equal faster speeds, and having a dual channel motherboard plays another part in it. Current build specs: CPU: i5-12600KF Motherboard: ASRock B660M Pro RS Memory: G.Skill Trident Z 2x16 GB DDR4-3200

Hello everyone, I'm having hope my issue will be resolved with your help I own a pc, it's specs are: MSI z590-a pro Intel i9-11900kf Corsair 32 GB (4x8GB) DDR4 3600 MHz Vengeance RGB Pro Black (CMW32GX4M4D3600C18) Gigabyte p850gm PSU MSI Suprim X 3090 graphics card WD Blue SN570 1tb Samsung 980pro 1tb Samsung evo 870 250gb 6 bequiet coolers silent wings 3 deepcool rgb coolers Bequiet Pure loop 360mm The issue that i'm having, is previously I owned DDR4 2х16GB/3600 G.Skill Ripjaws V Red (F4-3600C19D-32GVRB)G.skill ripjaws V red But decided to "upgrade" to prettier ram because I'm trying to do white build So,with that 2 sticks of 16gb my pc was working fine, undervolted gpu, undervolted cpu, xmp enabled, not much tinkering in bios to be frank After I "upgraded" my ram, I've encountered very weird issue, my pc turns off, I hear psu click, then after couple seconds another click, and it starts back up, each time, no matter how many times you turn it off it comes back on While I had my old ram i tried to remove all Corsair sticks and populate back slots for ram, the issue was not present, the problems that I have are only with this set of ram. I've tried to get back to Corsair about it, maybe they could've helped me, but they just asked for contact info to rma it, which I can't do from Ukraine (also, the ram was bought sealed off, unused so there is no way someone was using it before me) The only workaround I've found is after it powered off, manually turn off psu with a button on it's rear, by doing so - rgb on cpu block and on fans are starting to glow for a splitsecond and turned off, then I hear another click from psu like it's trying to start itself again, another click, and another click, all in a time of about 10-15 seconds. I know some might say it's not that big of a deal and just move on with it, but it's really frustrating, I can't turn it off from my phone anymore because it will just start itself and consume power. English is not my first language, sorry, ukrainian is. Thank you for reading, hopefully someone will find a solution

Hello, I just "upgraded" my PC to I think better specs but I'm not sure that's why I want to ask here (I generally don't know too much about building a Computer). I had previously built 2 x 8GB (3200 MHz) in my PC. But now I took "old" parts from my other PC and now I've installed additionally 1 x 16 (3000 MHz) and 1 x 8 (1200 MHz). The question now is, is it optimal? I now have 40 GB of RAM but I'm unsure how many MHz they are running. The task manager tells me it is 2133 MHz but I don't know if that's true or if that is even good. Thanks for the help already!

Introduction Hey everyone! So I am fairly new to self hosting stuff at home, I am talking about 2-3 years here. I have bought my first Raspberry Pi about 3 years from now and my small home server 1.5 years ago. I first ran TrueNAS Scale as the OS, but switched to Proxmox VE, because I had issues with accessing other pods hosted on the same issue. Talked about this issue with one of my teachers back then and he advised me to install Proxmox instead of trying to fiddle around with IP tables and stuff. Since then I am a huge fan of PVE! Alright, so I then also started hosting other VMs on there, because I needed the unused computing power that I used for the pods on TrueNas Scale again. I started migrating some of my services onto an Ubtuntu-Server Docker instance. It's been like that since that point. Recently I started experiencing OpenShift at work and CI/CD pipelines with Tekton and wanted to also do something like that privately to strengthen my knowledge about k8s. I started researching and found the underlying project of OpenShift; OKD. Long story short; I checked the minimum requirements for OKD and realized that I am short of a few GB of RAM... My Goal I would like you to quickly take a look at the table 1 and 2 on the following official documentation: https://docs.okd.io/4.14/installing/installing_bare_metal/installing-bare-metal.html#installation-machine-requirements_installing-bare-metal For my cluster, I would need 3 control plane nodes and at least 2 workers. That would be a total of 14 CPU-Cores and 64 GB of RAM. I also have other VMs running on my system, that I have listed below this section. So there needs to be slightly better hardware, just to be safe. Current Specs Case: Fractal Define 7 XL Black CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600 G, AM4, 3.9 GHz, 6-Core RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX, 4x 16GB, 3200 MHz, DDR4-RAM, DIMM Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX B550-A Gaming, AM4, AMD B550, ATX PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 11 CM, 600W Storage: - 2x Intenso top performance 512 GB, M.2 2280 - 2x Samsung 870 QVO, 1000 GB, 2.5'' - 6x Seagate IronWolf 8TB, 3.5'', CMR Other: - 2x Delock Host Bus Adapter 2 Port SATA PCIe - 3x Delock Molex to SATA power cable Virtual Machines NAS CPU: 1 Core [host] RAM: 8GiB [balloon=0] Storage: - 6x HDD pass-through - local-zfs (onto m.2) 32G virt. disk Docker Services (Ubtuntu Server) CPU: 3 Cores [x86-64-v2-AES] RAM: 14GiB Storage: local-zfs (onto m.2) 128G virt. disk Adguard (Ubtuntu Server) CPU: 1 Core [x86-64-v2-AES] RAM: 2GiB Storage: local-zfs (onto m.2) 32G virt. disk (The SSDs are currently unused, because I wanted to put the cluster onto those. Distributing the control planes and worker nodes onto them, having no ZFS pool for possibly a better performance?) Issues 1. My system was experiencing a high I/O rate, peaking at around 15-20% when doing high intensive writes. I had some MC servers hosted on there at some point, with large worlds and when they saved, all VMs were lagging to their death (almost). This was the case when I had the SSD1 and SSD2 as a RAID1 and I read that this can cause huge lag (possibly from ChatGPT, I cannot remember). Well so yesterday I migrated away from RAID1, also because I need more storage for my OKD cluster. 2. Another issue is that I had to buy those PCIe SATA adapters, because I didn't know that 2 of my 6 SATA motherboard connectors are going to get disabled, when using 2x m.2 slots. (I decided later that I am going to buy SSDs for my system). 3. Yesterday, a friend of mine pointed out, that my CPU only has 2 lanes and that this is probably going to be a bottleneck for my RAM. He advised me to do some more research about this topic though and as you can see I also don't know that much about hardware. 4. About the RAM issue, I would actually buy 2x 32 GB sticks here, and replace 2 of my 4 16GB sticks with them. 5. If I understood Proxmox VE correctly, it emulates certain CPU types, so the operating system would think that it has 4 cores, if I for example give it 1 socket with 4 x86-64-v2-AES cores. Also I still don't quite understand that part yet, with what CPU type to choose. Maybe I can get some advice here as well. 6. I actually want to give my NAS VM way more RAM, for faster caching, but it's not necessary really. Conclusion I would be very happy if I could get some advise about my current situation and maybe if you could address some other concerns that I maybe haven't stumbled into yet. I am willing to spend around 500$ for my upgrades (or more maybe, but I'll have to save up some more money then). I've also thought of maybe moving the NAS onto another Proxmox system (including the VM with the Docker services), but this will be more expensive. But this makes the system available for the cluster (with a small RAM upgrade).

Hi everyone, I was earlier editing a video via Blender and rendered it under Windows 10. After one session was done, I wanted to start another edit, but blender crashed consecutively when trying to start another project. I thought I am gonna play some games before I look into it. But then the game crashed after a while as well, but no error. So I looked into the Event-Log from Windows and the error indicated the RAM is running full. Which was the actual case, it was 59 of 64GB RAM memory used. I tried to empty the cache with RamMap, that would only temporary free up to 15GB, so 40GB are getting gulped up from somewhere else. Okay, let's test with a restart. Saved all my workspaces and turned the PC off and left it off, just to be sure. After restart, 40+ GB RAM were still in use, here is the screenshot of ressource-monitor Like does this indicate a physical memory leak. Sadly my PC can't boot Memtest, so I can only use the windows build in Memtest, but I got no other explanation. Any help/suggestions are very welcome.

A LIL BACKSTORY - I've been wanting to get into 3D design, video editing, and other media design programs as well lately. I already have good RAM (G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB (2 x 16 GB)), and I thought why not get another set and fill all 4 slots and not have to worry about not having enough memory. I understand I don't necessarily need it but I'm in a position where I can spend the money on more RAM. THE MAIN thing is when I installed the RAM, my PC booted up fine and all was well until some programs would randomly shut down all in unison, and that would happen every few minutes or so. Then my PC would just crash and I'd get the blue screen of death. Then I'd turn the PC back on and it would boot and run Windows fine then 5-10 minutes later it would just crash again and I'd be rewarded with another blue screen. The same thing kept happening till I turned my PC off, unplugged it, and took out the RAM I had just installed and now my PC has been fine ever since. The thing is though, I want that RAM in my PC. I haven't tried to install it again, so I wanted to come here for some advice/help. PC parts list here -> https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HfLKQP I thought it could be something to do with the PSU? (not sure if this is necessary information but I've got the PC internals, mouse, keyboard, and 2 monitors plugged in. - just in case it has something to do with PSU that's what's plugged in.)

Hi, I was following a tutorial to upgrade ram on my laptop. Each RAM slot has 2 retention arms that hold the RAM stick down. The idea is that you push them away and the RAM stick pops up. When I was doing it, I must have pushed the retention arms too far and now they are stuck. A little bit of metal won't let them get back into the right posirions. I can't get them to close and the new RAM sticks won't stay in the right position without them. I'm running out of ideas at this point and I really need help

Hello I am having this same problem with my build. Fans running, ram leds on, but nothing on the display. here are my specs: https://www.newegg.com/m/tools/custom-pc-builder/ld?dln=33077017 I was getting a solid yellow light on vga but i redid the gpu install and now I am just getting a solid yellow light on boot. i did not update any bios before hand is it possible i need to do that for my cpu to be compatible?

I tried building a pc and it will power on but not boot bios. I just get a black screen. Can someone help me troubleshoot this? https://pcpartpicker.com/list/N8Vzh3 I tried reseating the ram. I haven't tried checking the cpu placement yet. I have also tried an hdmi and display port out and different monitors. I am thinking it could be a defective psu wire or maybe it needs a bios update?

Hi, I'm looking to upgrade the ram on my Acer Nitro 5 laptop (model #: an515-57-919c. Series: an515-57). Specs CPU: i9-11900H GPU: RTX 3060 Storage: 512g SSD RAM: DDR4 16g 3200MHz I am planning to replace my old single ram stick of SK Hynix DDR4 16g 3200mhz with two 32g 3200MHz modules because I will be doing 3D modelling, using Photoshop etc for university and I will need more ram if i'm gonna be using such demanding software. I was hoping to get some ideas on what ram is compatible with my laptop and which brands of ram are worth choosing. Budget isn't an issue but obviously nothing overpriced, I don't want to be paying more for something that offers the same performance as something cheaper. I do live in Australia and want to get my ram from a local business so keep that in mind whern picking out ram. I'd prefer not to order from Amazon (just a personal preference of mine) but if the only compatible ram sticks are available there then I will make an exception. If I forgot to mention anything or if you need further information just let me know. Master Yoshi

Hi, I've encountered this issue and to be honest, I've run out of ideas and other hardware to test with. My system is running Linux (Ubuntu Studio to be exact) but I don't know if this is a problem with the software as I get the same info when booting to a live USB. The Problem: I have installed 4 x 4GB DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 (matching) sticks. They recognise in the UEFI/BIOS they are detected when running the "sudo lshw | grep -A 8 bank" command in the terminal (output below) however the total memory detected by the OS (or live USB OS) is only 7.5GB. The problem persists with all amounts of RAM above 8GB, including 2x8GB and 4x8GB all at 1600Mhz but lowering speeds or timing makes no difference. In addition, the 8GB sticks are 1.5v and the 4GB sticks are 1.65v so no mixing of capacities has been done. NEW BUILD PROBLEM I am running into an issue where my new build isn’t booting. I built the PC out of scraps from previous builds. All components are good and have been used on previous builds for testing. I put everything together and now my ram and usb devices aren’t being detected. I have gone through every troubleshooting process I can think of and have hit a wall. The only new component I have bought was a new GPU (only purchased because I wanted to check out the 40 series). Here is a list of the systems specs; intel i7 4780k asus z590-a motherboard PNY 8gb RTX 4060 (brand new just purchased) 16gb of ddr4 ram 1.5 tb of storage 700w power supply
