So I recently opted to try out raid using my two WD green drives, so I proceeded to follow the steps in my mobos manual. It told me to change the sata mode to Raid and then reboot whilst rebooting press Ctrl + I and then set up the raid which is what I did (Name: Raid 1, Type: Raid 1, Striping(Can't remember exact name): GREYED OUT). After this my computer keeps on BSOD without even entering the windows homescreen, so I had to disable raid and delete hte raid volume in order to get into the os. After goggling I found out that in order to enable raid without re installing the OS I need to change some registry values however I cannot find the ones for windows 8.1. I was looking at this thread: http://www.overclock.net/t/1227636/how-to-change-sata-modes-after-windows-installation however there is no option for windows 8 to go from ACHI to Raid. Any assistance is appreciated.

I am building a system that will have 2 SSD in raid 1 + 2 HDD in raid 1 but as outlined by @Spannerhands in this , i would be need an ECC ram so as to prevent silent data corruption. Please note that reliability is my primary concern here and by budget is flexible .I was about to buy the Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8gb) but its not ecc.. Any ECC ram you would recommand ?

Hello just a quick question. I already have a 2TB drive that I've been using. I plan to buy a new 2TB drive and use it with this one in RAID 1. Now, if I enable RAID1 would I lose all the data on my old 2TB drive or would it just copy over? Thank you

Hello's being a storage solution noob I was wondering if someone could offer some help this morning to my dis pleasure i discovered one of my disks in my raid 1 has failed. firstly how do i actually work out which physical disk has failed?, also i was thinking on upgrading from 1tb wd blacks to 2tb wd reds (or 3tb's but i think they dont work on old rigs?) - how do i go about doing this on a old 1366 rig? anyways helps would be great

Greetings all !! I am having problems with my new Asus Maximus IV Gene motherboard and the raid option. The raid array is working "fine" sometimes, but most of the times it can't be seen from Windows and the only thing I have found that fixing it is a restart and a look in the bios. It is only a look i am not changing anything in there. The HDD is two 500gb a Samsung and a WD. Do anyone have an idea to what could remove the needed restart ?

Hi, I am planning to make a new rig for my PC, and I want to buy 2 x 2 TB HDD's run them in RAID 1,and 2 X 4TB HDD's also want to run them in RAID 1. What would be a good hard drive to buy for that storage solution, WD Red, WD Black, Barracuda ? Also, I am the only one that uses that data inside, so would it be better to use a NAS for this solution, or just a normal setup inside the PC?

Lets say I have 2 drives in a RAID 1 array, and one of the drives and the raid controller dies. Would I be able to recover all of my data from the raid array by taking the drive that is still working from that computer and simply connecting it to a different computer and accessing it in an operating system environment? The reason I'm unsure about this is because I know that with more complex levels of RAID, the raid controller dying means the data wont be accessible by just plugging all those drives into a different PC, however due to the nature of RAID 1 (it being just a mirror) I don't see how this would be an issue. Thanks

Hi, I'm planning on buying 2x 4 TB HDDs to run in raid 1 to have a trusty storage I can use for media files, personal documents, OS drive backup and basic hording. I would put these in my full tower desktop case and run raid 1 off of my MOBO's controller. I would also eventually use this storage as a NAS. Now I was thinking of this drive (http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st4000dm000) since it's 4 TB, it has one of the lowest $/GB ratio and it still has good reviews. Since the drives will function in synch, do I automatically need HDDs that are NAS "certified" (such as this one : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/seagate-internal-hard-drive-st4000vn000) ? I do not want to induce possible errors in the data because of vibration amplification. Thoughts ?

Hi Linus Forums, Something that my system currently lacks is a good backup solution (and space). I want to prepare for that purchase by asking a variety of questions. Current config: 2x SSDs in RAID 0 (contains Windows and applications); TRIM 1x HDD (important documents/pictures and Steam library) Ideally, I would like the following: A NAS with WD Red drives More local storage space Redundancy for HDD in rig Redundancy for SSDs (Windows and apps) Questions: (1) I am new to NAS. How frequently can data from associated computers get pushed? Can you expect something analogous to say Dropbox? (2) Can you RAID 1 drives that are inside of the NAS? If so, is this limited to certain NAS units? (3) Because I want to expand space and put two local HDDs in RAID 1, can I RAID 1 hard drives of different capacities/models? (E.g. I have a 1 TB HDD. Can I buy a 3 TB HDD, partition it, RAID-1 1-TB between the two, and gain 2 TB of non-redundant space?) While that sounds complicated, it would save a hard drive's amount of money and not result in leaving out the original drive because of case space. (4) Can you RAID 10 two SSDs (with OS) and two HDDs (with data)? Are there SDD lifetime issues in this situation? (5) Would a RAID 10 allow me to boot Windows from HDDs if an SSD fails? (Really important to me, so there is no downtime for work should I have to replace a drive the following weekend.) (6) Do I need a RAID card for RAID 10 (if not doing RAID 10, then for SSDs in RAID 0 and HDDs in RAID 1)? I know there are a lot of questions here. Please kindly answer as many (or as few) as you would like. I appreciate your time. Thank you in advance! - Polite Master

So I have two different model (WD Blue and Seagate NAS) 1TB drives that I want to put in RAID 1- and have wiped and mirrored both- then created a RAID 1 volume with them in my bios (On a gigavyte Z97MX Gaming 5) and then checked to make sure that by boot drive (840 Evo 128GB) is set to AHCI while the RAID volume is configured. Now when I boot normally it fails once then restarts and on the 2nd boot it enters automatic repair and fails to diagnose anything and boots wrong again this time only giving me the option to restart. If I put my PC back into AHCI and ignore the RAID volume it boots off of just the SSD it goes fine.

I want to get an external hard drive enclosure within which I can store either 3.5" or 2.5" hard drives. There will be as many HDDs as the enclosure can accomodate. They will be configured in RAID 1 (*1) and will likely later be connected to a Raspberry Pi configured for a NAS. When I hook up the HDD enclosure to the pi, they will be running 24/7, so I would like tips for choosing HDDs that will survive when running 24/7. I know of RED drives which are good for NAS', but in what way? What gives them an edge over other HDDs? I would prefer 2.5" drives as they're quieter, but I know of no 2.5" drives that are good for NAS' The enclosure will need to be connected to the Pi or my PC via USB! 2.0 max is needed since the pi doesn't support 3.0. --- *1 The RAID 1 will be hardware based, not software based. --- So my Qs: 1) Does anyone know of any decent RAID 1 enclosures I can use, such as http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00371POSW/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&colid=1B6VLY7UI68H1&coliid=I2NSJ5IDFG4SKV&me= I would prefer it if the enclosure isn't too expensive. Ideally under £100, though I don't want a crap quality one. 2) What drives do you recommend I use? Manufacturer, form factor and model? eg. RED drives? [ - though I think the RED drives are only by WD]

So I'm just wondering, is Raid 1 'Improved Reliability' and if so does it have any negatives like decreased performance and if it's even worth having it. -Thanks

Hello everyone! I just finished building my PC, I have an SSD and two HDDs. I'm a bit uncertain about whether I should do RAID 0 or RAID 1. I know what they do, but I'm just unsure if I should go with RAID 1/0. How's the performance in RAID 0, will there be a noticeable difference? Any replies will be appreciated.

SSD Caching a HDD Raid 1 vs SSHD Raid 1 which one is better if both possible?

Ok, I'm getting ready to setup my raid 1 (as already updated in my signature) and I have a few questions. My motherboard's manual (http://www.msi.com/service/download/manual-18958.html) states that I have to hold ctrl+I during P.O.S.T. and follow a few steps to create a new raid volume. 1- Creating a new Raid 1 volume will format my drives right ? 2- Do I need to create two byte-precise partitions before hand ? 3- Do both my drives need to be in Sata ports of the same gen ? (SATA 1 and 2 OR SATA3,4,5 and 6 , see manual) 4- Can I create a Raid 1 volume on a portion (partition) of the drives and a Raid 0 volume on the other portion, or is this completely absurd ? 5- Are Sata 3 cables backwards compatible ? 6- My drives aren't NAS optimized. Should I install them in different drive cages ? (my case has 2x 4 3.5'' cages) Thanks for the input.

Alright, so in my system, I got a 240 GB SSD and a 2 TB WD Black HDD. I looked into the forum for a problem similar to mine but couldn't find one that fits my scenario. I feel the Force within the HDD is dying out. What I plan to do is clone the HDD onto an external hard drive (will probably be using Acronis True Image Home) get another 2 TB Black HDD, setup a raid 1, and recover the clone copy from the external hard drive onto the raid 1 using Acronis (which has a boot disk, so I can do all the work without going into Windows) The problem is, I'm not very knowledgeable in raid. I'm not even sure that what I suggested is possible. Can you clone back to an empty raid 1 using a cloning software? If you can, what's the best way to go about it? Do the HDD's have to be exactly the same, or is alright if I went with WD and Seagate? Any advice, tips, suggestion, and ideas are welcomed. I would also love if you have an experience with raid 1 and Acronis together.

I really need some good help with my Raid 1, 2TB SSHD Mass storage. PLEASE. well the problem is that for some reason my raid 1 array has went into being write protected, while i can still play my games at the moment (tested with Team Fortress 2), i cannot access any of my music or download anything onto this array. Is there anyway i can fix this? Please someone help.

I recently pulled out two drives in raid 0 from my laptop and installed into my desktop, and they registered and read fine, and all data was preserved. After I backed up some files, I went ahead and changed the drives to raid 1, but now they are not showing up in my computer. Device manager says there is an intel raid 1 volume, but it doesn't show anything in the "volumes" tab. Going into the ASUS UEFI shows that the drive has a question mark on it, but I did change sata to raid mode, and both drives are being detected by the motherboard. Any clues as to why this is happening? I have also tried reverting them to non-raid mode, and they are still not detected by windows.

Hello, I am looking to build my first raid configuration and I have a couple of questions so I would really appreciate some help. The goal is both performance and redundancy. I will be using two Intel 730 480GB SSD for speed and one WD Caviar Red 3TB for mirroring them on a daily basis. 1. Additionally since the total capacity of the SSDs is 960GB I would like to use the 2TB left on the WD for storage and direct writing of important data. I don't know if this is possible when the HDD is in a some form of RAID configuration? 2. As far as I understand Raid 1 is actually out of the question since the HDD is only one. Does this mean that I should setup a Raid 10 where the SSDs are in performance mode and the HDD is the backup disk? Or do I need two HDDs in order to set any form of RAID redundancy? The reason why I am picking a 3TB WD instead of 2x2TB is because tests show that the 3TB version is much better than the 1 and the 2TB versions in terms of both noise and performance. I could buy a second 3TB though, given the fact that redundancy raid configurations only provide half the capacity of the drives. Basically my goal is to run the OS from the SSDs as well as all programs and games. Hmm, now that I think of it, the best solution is probably to just set up a Raid 0 on the SSDs and store all my valuable data on the WD Red. This way backing up won't be required since there's nothing valuable about games and the OS in my case. Also considering that the 730SSD are almost enterprise grade the likelihood of damage is not that high. What do you guys think. What's the best solution here? Thanks.

Hi, I like to know about wich Raid controller card is the best for SSD's. I'm looking for a Raid card that is optimised for running multiple SSD's in Raid 0. A card that are pcie gen 3 x16 or pcie gen 3 x8, have 24 or 32 sata III ports and have trim support. I'm also looking for an SSd that is perfect for raid. A very reliable SSD with very good garbage collection and with a lot of storage.

Hi, I am looking for some help/hints/guides on setting up my own storage solution. I would like to go for safe storage on 2 spacious hdds in raid 1 that automatically back up my OS drive in addition to being a dump for all my other files (music, videos, ...). I would also like to have access via an internet connection to my drives' content and be able to read/write from another computer and read from iphone if possible. I would also like to have the hdds in my full tower case since I have the space. I looked into personal clouds but I am not sure this is what I want. For a start, they seem to require application for its use with its custom explorer view. Also, from what I understand, they require an always on computer. I also stumbled upon the VPN solution which I misunderstand a bit. It seems to be a gateway to your home network from an internet address with encrypted data streams. This seems to also need an always on computer. There is also the remote desktop option. I need opinions of people with a little more knowledge than me, so my questions are the following : 1- Is there a solution that doesn't require an always on computer ? Maybe some way to power only the drives, chipset (or whatever part of the Mobo is needed for W/R) and ethernet adapter ? 2- Regarless of the computer being always on or not, what could be a good option to R/W files on local drives from any internet connection and do it in a secure manner ? 3- Is this option accessible from a browser or application ? Can this be accessed using a smart phone ? 4- Do you have a recommandation for a good reliable drive (2, 3 or 4 TB) that could be used for that purpose ? 5- Any other things I should be aware of ? Thanks in advance for the help. My rig : MSI MPower z77, Intel 3570K, XFX R7970 DD, GSkill 2x 4Gb @ 1600Mhz, Samsung 840 256 Gb, Some 600 Gb HDD, Corsair H80i, OCZ ZX1000, Azzo Solano 1000R

Hi All, I am looking to purchase a Samsung Pro 840 256gb SSD, and also 2x 2TB WD Green 64mb and put them in raid 1 (mirror). I will be using the ssd as the boot drive by I was going to partition off some GB so that I could cache the raid 1 array. Is this possible to do? And how much do you recommend taking off the 256gb for caching? Thanks for the replies!! -Willager Z77 platform
