Hello! Im planning a new build of a CAD-Workstation and Gaming-Rig. But even before I decide on the Graphics (will probably get a workstation card and a gaming card), RAM etc, I like to choose a case. I'm searching for a rack-mounted case, which means I'm searching for a 4U Server case. I like to have as much airflow as possible, something like 2-3 120mm fans on the front and a few 80mm on the back. It should fit an ATX-board and 2 GPUs, as well as a decent power supply and an SSD (no HDD required). I'm also thinking about using a AIO-Watercooler with Rad, but I'm not sure to this date if it's worth it. Do you have any suggestions for a 19" case? I think 4U is standard (to fit the GPUs), the second thing is the depth, I like it as short as possible, max. 500mm if possible. I found this one (ROSEWILL RSV-R4000): https://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Server-Chassis-Rackmount-Metal/dp/B0055EV30W?tag=linus21-20 But here, there are only two 120mm fans on the front and it's slightly longer (depth). If I go with the one with three fans on the front, the case depth increases even more. Another one is this one (NORCO RPC 431): http://www.norcotek.com/product/rpc-431/ But here I don't know if it isn't too short for all the stuff I like to put in. This one seems interesting too (ADVANTECH IPC 631): http://www.advantech.com/products/1-2jkd4b/ipc-631/mod_4088ba6f-9779-4901-9620-16ffa2143ce1 But there are only small ventilation cut-outs, so I think this won't work... right? I previously owned the ARK 4U-500-CA (https://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811182566&cm_re=ark_case_4u-_-11-182-566-_-Product), which was nice, but I like to have more ventilation upgradability, when I plan this new build Thanks in advance! Hey All, I'm putting together a project and I want to get my servers off the floor. I've seen people use Lack Tables as a "Lack Rack" However the legs seem hallow and unstable even when they're being stacked feet to feet. If I where to rail mount servers as well as bolt mount such as routers switches etc would I run into any stability issues? Thanks

Hey! I was just wondering what type of server rack LMG has in their server room. I'm looking for some good quality racks for a few servers.

Hello all, I want to build a NAS for home use and I want to fit it in a rack mountable case. Currently I don't have any parts, so I'm looking to buy everything. I want to use the machine a NAS primarily, as a media server so I can stream movies to a TV and use it to backup my computer. I don't have a price range in mind but I wouldn't want to spend more than $1000 including drives. Talking about drives, 4 x 6TB drives in RAID 1 should be enough. Thank you for your help ?

Hi guys! So i've built my first server a couple of months ago and am now thinking about buying a server rack for it. Right now I only have a 4U server but I know that later I'll put some more in it, like a pfsense router, maybe some things for home automation and stuff like that but that's for the future. What I'm hoping here are some pointers for buying my first rack. Things I need to look out for, what is important and what is not so,... A question I had was about the widths of racks. I've found a couple of racks with different widths. Do the bigger ones just have more space left on the sides or are there differences in width in rack equipement? Thanks!

Hey all, dumb question.... I am setting up my first server rack, and I want to run my cables coming out of it in a meaningful and nice looking way. The case has some openings that are obviously for just that purpose, but I do not know what they are called or what jacks that would fit in them are called, which makes them hard to search for. The ports are at the top of the image provided (which is the back of the case, Image source is the NavePoint website): Case: http://www.navepoint.com/navepoint-12u-600mm-depth-wallmount-networking-cabinet-pro-series.html Thanks!

Hi all, The company I work for are planning to buy Supermicro rax (configuration not yet decided) to be used for 3d rendering (Max, maya, blender - all CPU based as of now). We have two Supermicro E5-2697 v4 18 core machines with 32 GB RAM currently. Idea is to buy something that can provide thrice the speed of what we have (41x2=82 Gz) under 20,000 Euros. I have been using http://www.thinkmate.com/ to configure different options. Given the fact that we do not wish to assemble something ourselves, can someone tell me what would be the right choice for the amount ? Plus are there any other sites like thinkmate which provide us information on different rack options ? Thanks

I recently bought a refurbished server off ebay for some simple home hosting. Namely the HP ProLiant DL160 G6. It did however not come with rails, so I would like to know what sized I'd be looking at for this server, and what rails I'd need to buy.

Hello everyone, this is my first post in this forum. I plan to build my first ZFS box to replace my current Synology DS215j. I want to reuse 6x2TB HDDs, which I already got. I tend to use Ubuntu Server 16.04 LTS, which got ZFS support and samba for network shares. My main objectives are a low power consumption (due to 24/7 operation and high electricity costs in Germany) and high data protection against bit rot, bad sectors and HDD defects. The number of users will be not more than 3. After a lot of reading I found the following components: Mainboard: Supermicro X11SAE-F SSD for OS: Intel SSD 600p 256 GB (PCIe x4 via M.2 Interface) Processor: Intel Xeon E3-1240L v5 (max. 64 GB DDR4 2133 MHz RAM, 25W TDP) Memory: 1x 16 GB Kingston ValueRAM KVR24E17D8/16 (DDR4 2400 MHz) or KVR21E15D8/16 (DDR4 2133 MHz) Power Supply: Seasonic PRIME 650 W Titanium Case: IPC 3U-3416 (16-bay rackmount case) Cable: 2x SFF-8087 to SATA Since my budget is limited to 1500-2000 € and my LAN is a Gbit network, I want to avoid buying a dedicated host bus adapter card and stick with the 8 SATA connectors of the mainboard. For now I plan on filling the case with 8x2TB while reusing my 6x2TB and leaving the remaining 8 HDD slots empty for future upgrades. I intend to use all 8 HDDs in one RAIDZ3 vdev. I do not want to do RAIDZ2 because the HDDs have been used for years in a Synology NAS. I want to use lz4 compression, but not deduplication. Thats why I think 16 GB of RAM are enough. The power supply may be expensive, but has excellent efficiency (90% at 10% load) and 10 years of warranty. The box will have room for future upgrades: 1) If necessary I can add another 16 GB of RAM at any time. 2) The SSD and the processor may be oversized for a storage application but I want to leave some room for new ideas. E.g. a virtual machine for using GitLab. 3) I can add 8 additional HDDs with a HBA card to extend the storage capacity, when the money is available. My question is if there is something I haven't considered or some problems that might occur, e.g. compatibility issues. If you have further advice or know hardware components, which may be more suitable I am glad to hear them. Thanks for your help!

For a rack server such as THIS! or THIS!! Do I need anything else or can I just hook it up to my home router, plug it into a monitor and wall and then start my coding and then hosting. Or do I need this thing called a Server Switch and a special router like this?? Please Help I have no experience with rack servers and Don't want to waste money to find out I don't have everything and can't afford the rest... Please and thank you!

Hi everyone! I am building an addition on my house and I'm looking for input. I used to be an avid computer builder, modder, and overclocker more than 10 years ago. Life got busy and I haven't built anything since . I'm looking to build two computers for my wife and I to use. I have an equipment room with two 44u racks (plenty of space). I need a rack mount case for her build. I also want to output the computer signal to my media room, office, and Zwift room. I am planning on mirroring the screen to all displays unless someone has a better idea. Uses: CAD (Solidwork/Inventor) - me only Ripping movies to server - me only Gaming (mostly Zwift http://zwift.com/what-is-zwift) General internet and office activities My screens will be: Epson 5040ub projector (Media Room) 2x - 45-55 inch UHD curve (Zwift room) 2x - 40 inch UHD (Office) I live in California (USD$) and I'd like to spend under $2,000 for both computers combined. I am willing to go a little higher if the gains are worth it. Attached is a picture of my floor plan. If you have any questions let me know. Thanks for the help!

Hey folks! Been a while since I've needed some guidance on tech, so I came to the best of the best (that's y'all). I'm in the preliminary stages of building a home server and I want to dig ideas for an aesthetic. I'd like a wide variety of different designs, so go ahead and flood this post with anything and everything. Mini ITX or Micro ATX will "probably" be the board of choice, but that's up in the air. Could be 1U or bigger ... no dimensions are off-limits. Let's see what y'all got! Thank you in advance to everyone who contributes. You're all breathtaking. ~ J

Just recently, I started transferring my work over to a home server. I started buying some used servers and now, I need somewhere to put them. I currently have a 1U processing machine and a 2U storage server. I have the 2 servers on a little stool under my desk. I don't have space for a big rack and don't need anything more then 6-12Us. I'd prefer to buy something used or cheap because I am running lightweight stuff. I don't rely on this stuff for business, I just have them to improve the quality of my projects. Does anyone have any suggestions for racks that I can put on the floor? Thanks!

Hey all, so I need help with a project my wife's parents are looking at doing. In short, they are building a new home and want the following: IP cameras inside and out (wired) - at least 10 Remote door-unlock after viewing camera At least 2x wired ethernet ports in each room (lets say 10 rooms) Ability to view cameras from tablet + wall-mount touch-screen NAS to store everything they have, including movies and TV shows (at least 40TB usable space) PLEX server to watch their stuff, anywhere in the house + while on the move NVR to store / manage IP camera feeds Ability to have home-automation in the future (I don't know about this stuff) I'm meeting with them next week to get their actual requirements, but so far I'm thinking I'll need the following (and help with: PoE managed switch for IP cameras (24 port cat6) - but which one? IP cameras - but which ones? I don't want to pay any monthly fees / use their online solution NVR software - maybe ZoneMinder? NAS - but which one? Managed switch for home network (24 port cat6a) - but which one? Router - but which one? Patch panels - one for cat6 and one for cat6a - Ideally feed-through as opposed to punch-down 18RU wall-mount rack - but which one? 1RU rack-mount server (maybe an old DL360 G8?) - no idea about server grade hardware / software though Hypervisor - proxmox? Ability to have RAID 6 on 1RU server, or something so I can hot-swap in HDDs when they fail Touch-screen tablet thingy for use in kitchen to view stuff Other things i've not yet thought of The overarching aspects are: No paying monthly fees to anyone All OpenSource if possible Easy to maintain - i'll do the install and config and then hopefully annual maintenance only :) Cheap, but good quality stuff is more important I'm hoping people here can help me shape what I need to do. Thank you if you're able to assist :)

Hello Linus et al, I was hoping LTT would do a video/series to show us how they organize and store their equipment, track it, etc. We struggle with optimizing space for racks, carts, and workbench. Thank you! Sandy

Hi. So far, I stacked a lot of stuff into a piece of furniture that was litterally a leftover extra unit of kitchen construction from the people who were living before where I live now. And after 3years, it started to sloooooowly give up. The side of it is, month after month, creeping away to the side, leaving the bottom plate. This "thing" (with my pitiful attempt at "trying" to do something to at least be able to sleep last night and stress a little bit less) is actually where are: -my two storage and virtualization server -my fiber router -my U4 workstation&maincomputer and it's on top of it that are stored a screen, keyboard and KVM switch + loads of spare parts... So, here I am... looking for a rack cabinet between 15 and 18U, deep enough to take in a R720, the cheapest possible that can be delievered in France/EU. I'm quite sick of messaging every marketplace seller asking how deep of a server we can fit in their advertised "600mm deep" cabinet, and be told that the rails are so pushed back that only 45mm deep servers would fit, or that the back panel isn't removable, or only to be never answered. And yeah, I know officially Dell wants 75cm of rack depth and stuff, but aint got that kind of money and this R720 is gonna sit on the bottom like a naughty boy on top of the UPS units. I mean, if someone there knows which brand/place/vendor sells cheapo deep 15 to 18U rack cabinets with non-stellar shipping costs in EU, it would be awesome. That old kitchen cabinet is painfully slowly dislocating.

Hello, I'm looking for a motherboard which supports 6+ (dual slot) GPUs for i9-9900K/Ryzen 9/Threadripper 2/XEON. I wont use those GPUs for cryptomining. I'll be running virtual machines with GPU passthrough to 3 macOS VMs and 3 Windows VMs (plus 1-2 Linux VMs if I can find a motherboard which supports so many GPUs. All those GPUs as well as CPU will be liquid cooled with 1 liquid cooling circuit for 4 GPUs and 1 liquid cooling circuit for 2-3 GPUs & CPU. System will be rack mounted in a 5U for better cooling. I know that those are expensive as hell.

Hi all, I have to build a computer for my lab at work. we need as many PCIe slots as we can get. The motherboard should fit in a 19 inch rack mount pc case. Also we would like to have two hard-drives to run it in a RAID configuration for data collection and an SSD drive for booting. And if you can suggest a case for the new computer too that will be great. For the CPU we need it to be fast, preferable not less than 4-cores, and what kind of RAM will be compatible with it. for now we don't require a GPU money is not a problem, go wild Thanks a lot.

Alright guys and gals, I am ready to take the home server plunge! I am just about to order my server and start the process. SO here is a quick breakdown of the build plans 1. Get server 2. Move networking gear into same room as server 3. Setup server with battery backup, etc. 4. Install OS, and programs 5. Setup my raid To start I am going to base the server off of this one on ebay: https://www.ebay.com/itm/132880014310?ul_noapp=true They have an option to configure the listing below so I am gonna call tomorrow morning and change a few things After the server is ordered I need to get a third WD Red to make my Raid array for the server (This is to start, will most likely go bigger in the future) Will make a new post tomorrow after I have a server ordered

What rack brand/model is shown on these pictures? The blanking panels with handles is what caught my attention. (I'm aware that the handles most likely are for esthetics only) Hoped the IT guys would know. Original pictures on their website, customer service did not know. https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-routing/unifi-security-gateway-pro-4/ https://www.ubnt.com/unifi-switching/unifi-switch-16-150w/

Hello everybody, this is my very first post here, but I need a little help from the wise crowd. I hope my post makes sense on this subforum. I have a normal desktop PC which is currently standing under my desk on a wall brick. Unfortunately I am bound to a wheelchair and have difficulties to reach anything that is not at desk height. It means that I need help to do maintanance or any change to the system from another person. This is quite a hassle to depend on the availability of somebody else and their expertise or lack thereof to properly handle hardware. To fix this situation I had the idea to lift the complete pc up and built it in a 19" 2U rack chassis. It would make it possible to pull it out like a drawer of a desk and do all required tasks via a maintenance hatch from above. It is not possible to throw an endless amount of money (~300€) at the solution, therefore would like to have some insider tips with what components I could achieve what I am looking for. My current PC components are listed in my profile, but here's list of the most important ones, for convenience: Asus Z270 ROG Maximus IX Formular currently 5x 4 HDD (expansion possible) 5.25" Blu-ray ODD AiO 240mm radiator EVGA GTX1080 FTW (I would like to have a 2nd 5.25" front bay for a card reader/ HDD hotswap) One last note, my current build is optimised for noise reduction. Under normal load it is inaudible. Since the rack would be in the living room, I'd like to keep the noise floor to a minimum. So crazy 10,000 rpm fans are not an option. I am aware that it is not common to put desktop grade hardware in an rack mount case, but it would be the best sollution to help given my disability. ~~ Inty

Alright, so i've been running Pihole for a few weeks now, and i absolutely love it! I can definitely recommend it to anyone who has a spare rPi laying about. Personally, i've been using a Raspberry Pi 3B+. it's a bit overkill for just a DNS sinkhole, but atleast it won't run hot and i finally have a permanent usecase for this thing. The only problem i had was mounting. i previously just had it laying on top of my rack. (this is an older pic, please ignore the AP just laying there, it's been ceiling mounted since! this looks pretty jank tough, and my cat would constantly knock it off there so it would just hang off of the USB/ethernet cable. How would you mount a Pi in a 19" server rack tho? spacing out an entire U for just a Pi seems a bit overkill, and it's not like there is rackmount hardware available. Atleast, not if you don't own a 3D printer that is. Now in the top U of my rack there's my router. it's a Mikrotik RB2011 UiAS-RM. and inside, its just a tiny little board and lots of empty space. Perfect for a Pi! now that just leaves the cables. sadly, my router doesn't have any internal connectors. so i have to route cables into the enclosure somehow. lucky for me, the Mikrotik has some ventilation holes cut into the front. perfect for routing a cable through! i just had to make sure to pass the cable through the hole before crimping on the second connector. otherwise passing it through there would be a real challenge. the router also has a USB port in the front, which i used to power the Pi in the same way the eth cable comes into the box. i originally wanted to use the PoE of this router to power the Pi, but Mikrotik uses some weird proprietary PoE standard, and none of the PoE HATS i used ever worked with this. So regular old USB it is i guess. and here's the finished product! definitely looks a lot cleaner than just a little PCB on top of the rack. and if it wasn't for the cables, you wouldn't ever know there was a Pi running PiHole in there! excuse the lower-light photo, my cheapo Xiaomi phone doesn't handle those very well.

Not sure if this would be the right place to post this. I have a 2 post 12u rack I use for my home lab equipment. The rack is slanted at an angle, here is an example: https://goo.gl/images/8BTHcp I have been looking for an angled shelf for some of my equipment, but haven’t been able to find one that is angled so that the shelf is laying horizontal (not angled) once installed. Does anyone know where I might be able to find one? Thank you
