Hey there fellas. I plan on upgrading my R9 290x here in my main rig soon and will be dropping it down into my second rig which currently has a FX 8320 and HD 7870. I have already ran the 290x with the 8320 and it is severely bottlenecked in CPU heavy games such as Battlefield 1 (and BF5 when it releases). Seeing as how its my second rig I plan on spending as little cash as possible on it. Upgrading to Ryzen seems to pricey considering I would have to buy at least 8 gigs of DDR4. There doesn't seem to be any AMD FX CPU that can keep up with the 290x, with the closest being the 9590, which isn't supported by my board and will probably more power than my PSU can provide (Corsair RM650). So with all that out of the way, is there any cheap Intel CPU's that would be better suited with the 290x and support DDR3? I am not super familiar with Intel's lineup of CPU's and I'm not sure where to start. If anyone knows any cheap reliable motherboard to go with it, that'd be great. Thanks!

My friend wants to buy my r9 290x 4gb (msi twin frozr) and a fx8350 will his 550w bronze psu (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01C3FFLZ8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) be able to run the setup with or without any OC or under-volting?

Hi I have an asus R9 290X with a Morpheus cooler on it. I first connected the fans on the motherboard and they worked perfectly. However they run at full speed. Since i'm all about "quietness", I bought a "5-Pin VGA PWM Mini PH Connector to Dual PWM 4-Pin Fan Cable Splitter" which fit on the graphic card itself (see picture). I connected it and both lights of the card light up so everything "aah ok". When turning on, the fan didn't spin up. And they don't do it after heating up de card. How can I fix this? Do I need to reset something? Thanks

So, I finally managed to update my system from 775 to 1366. the CPU I have is the X5650, cooled by a Coolermaster seideon 120m. Now i think i am facing a GPU bottleneck. ( Currently Gtx 680) I thought of a 780 ti, but those are selling used down here in Germany for around 200 €, R9 290x Cards, on the other hand, are selling for around 150 € with a good cooler. What Gpu should i get? (price to performance in mind) What would be the best Card this Cpu could handle? Thanks for your answers

So I found a R9 290x matrix platinum for 200 euros. It is a pretty good price for a 290x given the current prices of video cards. The thing is I know from the past that asus cards had abysmal cooling before the latest cooler they put on the 480s and 1060s and the rest of the cards of that generation. Can I overcome this ? Does anybody have any experience with that card ? Is it a thermal paste issue ? Or is it just a bad cooler ?

Hi all, My first ever build has taken it’s first major casualty, the graphics card. It was an XFX (maybe sapphire?) R9 290x. So I need a new card now. Any suggestions for a card of comparable performance? I know Volta is coming out soon and I’ve been holding out until then, but now my rig is out of commission completely as far as gaming goes. It’s also worth mentioning that my monitor is a 144hz FreeSync monitor. Price is a big issue too. I know Nvidia is selling their cards at MSRP (or close to) prices so that gives me some good options there. Call me crazy, but I feel like an RX 580 shouldn’t run me almost 900 bucks! My system is: i7 4790k MSI Gaming 3 Mobo 16GB Ram samsung 860 evo 500gb 1tb HDD

Making this post for 2 reasons, to help others and to solve a weird issue. First, I got sick and tired of the heat and noise the Asus R9 290x Directcu II was putting out. What Asus was smoking with slapping that cooler on was beyond me. The card isn't officially supported by Nzxt as it is a non reference pcb. But it works just fine. You have to remove 1 part of the backplate (it's a small 1 inch wide portion of the backplate that hangs down the side) and don't use the washers supplied by nzxt or the screws won't reach. I used a corsair h55 water cooler with it. Temperatures went from 88c at 80% fan speed to 67c at 30% fan speed. It's amazing. The problem The card kept crashing to a black screen, even at idle. After much troubleshooting I noticed that on hwmonitor64 I was getting a shit ton of gpu memory errors (talking thousands). This told me that the card was suddenly not getting enough power (at stock, no OC). I raised the core voltage by 15mv and sure enough it is rock solid stable for the last 6 hours. Now it's not really a problem, as it's working great with a slight bump in power, but it's my ocd that's keeping my head scratching. Without the shitty dcii cooler, I had to give it an extra bump in voltage. Any ideas? Or should I just ignore it and hope my ocd doesn't get the best of me lol. The pump and fan are plugged into my mobo, and pump is working fine. Vrm temps and gpu temps are low (each around mid to high 60s) at load Specs Fx 6300 at 4.6mhz 1.4125 v Gigabyte 970 UD3P Rev. 2 Asus R9 290x direct cu ii 4gb Corsair hx750 power supply

Hi! Can I flash an r9 290x bios into my r9 290? I know it's risky but I will flash it on the silent fan profile bios, and if that goes bad, I can just roll back to the uber bios, right? I have the wf3 non oc version.

Hey guys, first of all sorry for my bad english, I hope it is good enough to ask you something about watercooling because I am a newbie to this. My actual system is: AMD FX8320 @4.3Ghz (Corsair H100i) AMD R9 290x MATRIX @1080Mhz (Raijintek Morpheus) 8gb Gskill memory (1333mhz) ASRock 970 Performance bequiet straight Power e7 700w (oldest part in this PC ^^) Samsung Evo 850 SSD (250gb) some 1TB HDD's I'm planing to build a custom water cooling loop for my system with a single 480mm radiator at the top of my case for cpu and gpu, is that enough? Are the components even worth watercooling or are they too old to get a benefit of more OC? Just that you know, I don't care about silence, my PC is in another room and could be as loud as a starting Jet if the Performance is okay, I only want a water cooled system to get better OC Results. Thats all I guess, if I forgot something feel free to ask me and thanks in advance for your amswers

Hey, some time ago I had Windows 10 installed on my system but because I got some Bluescreens after the Anniversary Update and decided to go back to Windows 7. The Problem was solved and everything worked fine... for some days/weeks. After a time my PC started freezing without a reason, no matter if I played WoW, Rainbow 6, GTA V or just watched youtube videos. My System is overlocked so I tried the default settings and this didn't solve the problem. The freezes doesn't appear everyday but sometimes they appear 4-5 times a day. I already googled for it but didnt found something that helps, I hope you guys can help me out My System : CPU : AMD FX8320 @4240Mhz - 1.3625V GPU : AMD R9 290X @1080Mhz Core RAM : G.Skill RipJaws 1333Mhz (8GB) Mainboard : ASRock 970 Performance SSD : Samsung SSD 850 Evo PSU : be quiet Straight Power e7 700w Already tried prime95 stress test for 4 hours without a failure. Overheating can't be the problem too, while gaming my CPU is between 41°C and 54°C and my GPU is between 40°C and 67°C

Hi all I have just purchased a GTX 1080, my current PC hardware are CPU: AMD FX-8320 GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290X Mobo: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 I have seems some comments online mentioning the AMD CPU i have will bottleneck the 1080. I really dont have any more money to spend on another mobo or cpu, Just want to check what would happen in games if i use the 1080 with my current CPU. If a upgrade is needed what would be the recommended CPU and MOBO. Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated Thanks

So my brother is selling his old machine with two R9 290X cards and said i could buy it off him cheap (neither of us has any idea what it's worth). I'm tempted to buy it as I have a GTX 950 now. I usually just play BF4 so an AMD card should be better, right? Info: I play all my games at 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. I have a 600w Corsair CX PSU that will be replaced shortly. So my questions are; 1: Is it a good upgrade at all? 2: What would it be worth after 2 years of gaming without OC, any help is much appreciated

Can someone please answer me on this one? I am gonna build a computer, and i am conisdering buying the R9 290X as the GPU for my build. But I was wondering if the X4 880K will bottleneck or if it will be fine? I am also new to this page, so I have no idea how things work around here, but anyways.. Thanks for the replies

should i buy an r9 290x or an r9 390? or should i wait a little longer to see how the gtx 1000 series turns out?

Alright, well for the longest time I had an issue plaguing me where the two crossfire cards inside my rig would develop artifacts when sitting idle on the Desktop. If I would bring up anything somewhat graphically intensive, let's say a web page with a Youtube video the artifacts would stop, I minimize the window and the artifacts would come up again. I could game for 5 hours without any issues as soon as I hopped to the desktop, bam, like clock work the artifacts would come back. At first I thought it was a heat issue, so I modded my case with a exhaust fan pulling the hot air from both cards, problem still persisted. So then I fired up GPUz and started to look at the frequencies of the GPU both the memory clock and the core clock. I noticed that when I open said youtube window the Core clock would throttle up from 350 to whatever was required with a maximum of 1040 Mhz. Having said this the core clock would usually remain under 500 for such tasks, but it would throttle as needed. Also I noticed that during these tasks the memory clock remained really low, @150 Mhz. I found it odd that the Core clock would throttle but the memory would not. So it looked like the memory had only two states 150 and 1250 Mhz. In the end I hex edited my BIOS and flashed it with AtiFlash in DOS, I also disabled ULPS. Although ULPS did not fix the issue and was not the root cause, I like knowing that when I hop out of a game the fans will keep spinning to further cool down my card, instead of just stopping. I don't like the idea of one card being passively cooled after it reached 80 degrees +. Here are the changes I made. I edited my bios to never drop the Memory clock, so the memory clock is always at 1250Mhz now. I also edited my core clocks, my core now never drops below 500 Mhz, the next step up is 840 Mhz, and then 1040 Mhz. I also changed my fan profiles and a single temp profile. Since I raised the Core clock slightly and the memory clock completely I wanted to make sure that the card was not running to hot. So I raised the fan profiles by 10% and dropped the top temperature profile by 10 degrees. The single temperature profile I was worried about and changed was the 90 Celsius/100% fan one, I changed it to 80 Celsius/100% fan speed. Then I raised the other fan speeds by 10%, so 56% went up to 66%, and 36% went up to 46%. I can't remember the exact #s I used but essentially I brought them up by 10% from the original values. With all these changes to the GPU BIOS on both cards I now have eliminated the Desktop artifacts. My idle card temps hover around <50 Celsius, ~ 3-5 degrees higher than the stock BIOS clocks, and ULPS is completely disabled. Disabling ULPS: (link)Open regedit and search (Edit - Find) for EnableUlps then change the DWORD value from 1 to 0. Ignore EnableUlps_NA this does nothing. Keep searching (pressing F3) through the registry and change every entry you find in there from 1 to 0. Once finished reboot. Editing the vga BIOS: (link) I changed the Fan and Temperature profiles with a Hex editor, I used an application called HxD. Then I used the Hawaii Bios Reader application to edit the core and clock frequencies and then used it to create a proper check sum for the BIOS. After the edits you have to flash the BIOS to each card individually. I just swapped them after each flash, left one out of the mobo while the other was being flashed. I hope this helps someone with the same issue.

okay, so im in a bit of a pickle. ive had my card for a few months now and its idle temps have only been up to about 33-35C. there is plenty of airflow and the room temp is low. yesterday, after playing fallout 4 for a bit, i noticed how loud my fans were and also the enormous amount of heat coning out of my system. the game had been closed out for about an hour at that point and i went into afterburner to check its idle temps. they read @ 78C!! my system has never gotten that hot even under MAX load, and for it to be on idle was just bizzare. so i shut down my system to let it cool off and restarted it once it had, but to no avail. the idle temp began to raise very quickly. so i checked my drivers and software and they are all up to date. it is the next day and i have afterburner runing to monitor my temps, as of now it has been on for a about 20 minutes and is sitting firm at 47C, which still worries me because thats almost 15C hotter than usual. I am worried to play anything so i dont overheat my card.

Sorry new to the forum but a long time watcher of LinusTechTips on youtube way back. I bought a r9 295x2 last year during tax season. Throughout the year and also within the last few months, i have put this card in a Corsair 250D since march of 2015 and sometimes would hit the thermal limit on one or even more than one gpu on the card. Taking a long time in researching over the last few months I'd rather not go into full loop watercooling. I work as a part time and as a college student and I do not have the time to invest into a watercooled system. I take and move the computer around usually on a weekly basis and that is why it is in a small case. I have 2 performance edition SP120s in push pull pushing air out the front of the case. So i had researched and from what i can tell, the asetek cooler that is on the 295x2 is very if not the same as the h55 cooler from corsair. From the picture, i'm wondering if the h55 can be screwed in the same way. If you have a r9 295x2 and did something like this, let me know how it is. I'll need to install 2 to the card. I'll be keeping the central red fan to cool the vram but want to know if this will be better than doing a full waterloop for the GPU in that small of a case. If you have suggestions about using a waterblock instead and doing a loop, try to give me a budget.

so i have everything that are the makings of a gaming rig, but for some reason i dont get the performance of a gaming rig. here;s my specs. AMD FX 6300 six core @ 4.1GHz(overclocked and water cooled) Radeon R9 290X 4gb 16gb RAM (four 4gb sticks) MSI 970 MB 850-875w Power supply 238gb SSD 1Tb HDD my problem here is that 1 im not getting the fps i should (no more than 60) and 2 my gpu gets super hot, its said to get up to 95C but my computer shuts down when it hits 70. any help would be amazing, thanks.

Basically I'm getting an average of 40 that stutters and drops to 20 fps when I should be getting constant 60. (I practically copy pasted this from a dead Tom's Hardware thread that is now dead and no help) Specs: CPU: i5 4690 GPU: 2x XFX DD R9 290X 8gb Mobo: GA Z97x-SLI Ram: 8gb G. Skill 667mhz Hard drive: 1TB WD PSU: XFX Core Edition PRO850W I know that I should be getting 60fps average. Everything is turned up, except for Nvidia Hariworks. I'm running the 15.12 drivers and my cards are set in Uber mode with a clock speed of 1375. Whenever I run Heaven benchmark I get a score of 2500-600, and get a 60fps on the Shadow of Mordor benchamark at 4K. I also set the EnableTemporalAA=false in the rendering.ini file in the Witcher 3. I get practically the same fps with crossfire disabled. There is also a lot of sudden dips in fps and stutters while playing. GPU Usage during gameplay:

I currently have an R9-290x (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202129) and I want to get a crossfire set up. I was planning on pairing it with an R9-390. This one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131672 or this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202164. Will this work together? I have never done a crossfire setup and I just want to be sure it will work. Also, if the 390 will work, which one should i go with? Should I try to save $30 and go with the PowerColor or should I go with the Sapphire? I know this should be asked elsewhere, but will my PSU power both cards? I have this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182325 Thanks for any help, I need it!

Hey! I want to buy a new PC but I don't know which GPU to buy. My System would be the following: i5 6600k want to go to 4.5GHz when I have a proper cooling Asus Z170-A Kingston HyperX Fury 2666MHz DDR4 8GB EVGA Supernova G2 750W WD Blue 1TB Samsung Evo 850 256GB NZXT H440 Razer Edition Artic MX-4 Cooler? a cheap one...going to upgrade to NZXT Kraken X61 or Corsair H110i for Christmas (not enough money atm) Maybe the CM Hyper TX3...is it good for non or little OC? Windows 8.1 -> 10 Now I'm not sure about the GPU. The options for me are: MSI R9 290X Lightning Sapphire R9 390 Nitro I'm tending to buying the 290X since I'd really like to overclock my Card. On the other side it has 4GB less VRAM and is already 1.5 years old. I don't find any benchmarks giving me a clear view of the situation. The cards are both between 350 and 360€. Im using a 1080p monitor so the 4GB VRAM wouldn't be that hard kind of a loss. Which one has better performance for 1080p Gaming and will still be good in the future? Could you recommend a Cooler? Is 750W for the PSU enough?(Heard that the MSI uses much power) Thanks in advance!

Hey everyone, I do not post on forums often but I find myself in need of help. Normally I am the guy that everyone goes to for PC help, but I find myself at a loss for the problems that I am having with my own system. What keeps happening is that the AMD drivers keep crashing. Either they crash, pop up the message that the drivers have crashed and recovered and then the game that I was playing crashes in turn (duh) or the whole system goes down; screens go black and the only solution is to hard reset. I'm sorry I cannot be more specific than this but it is happening in every game that I play. Recently I have been replaying alot of games so here is the list of games that I have been having issues in: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, Dragon Age: Origins (And all DLC/Expansions as they are the same game), Dragon Age II, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Grand Theft Auto V, Company of Heroes 2, World of Warships, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Homeworld Remastered, Hitman: Absolution, Borderlands: The Presequel... yeah. I am pretty sure that the problem is down to something with the drivers or my system. My system setup is kinda complicated. I recently changed over to using my secondary tower as the main had me throwing fits of rage. But the secondary is giving me the same problems, if less frequently. And on top of that I have changed the secondary a bit to compete with the power my primary had. (Note: All 3 of these setups have been giving me the SAME problems) Original Setup: Gigabyte G1.Sniper A88X AMD Athlon II X4 860K Corsair LP 2133 RAM (2x 4GB) PowerColor Radeon R9 290X PowerColor Radeon R9 290 CoolerMaster Hybrid Pro 850W PSU Secondary Setup: MSi FM2-A85XA-G65 AMD A10 6800K Radeon RP1866 RAM (2x 4GB) HIS Radeon HD7750 Fractal Design Tesla 650W PSU Current Setup: MSi FM2-A85XA-G65 AMD A10 6800K Corsair LP 2133 (2x 4GB) and Radeon RP1866 (2x 4GB) RAM (I know I am running 2 different kits, see later explanation) PowerColor Radeon R9 290 Fractal Design Tesla 650W PSU Now, to this point I have been dealing with the issue but it is really staring to grind my gears -- namely cause I have started playing MP games with my friends again. So, what have I tried? Here is another list, and this is just what I can remember having tried: 1. Uninstalling and reinstalling the AMD drivers, both the beta and non-beta versions (I use DDU to completely remove the drivers) 2. Underclocking my GPU 3. Underclocking my CPU 4. Changing RAM 5. Removing the Crossfire setup 6. Running MSi Afterburner to monitor temps 7. Uninstalling and reinstalling DX 8. Updated BIOS on motherboard (Both on the previous and current setups) 9. Updated BIOS on the R9 290 10. Changing out 8 pin connectors from PSU to GPU 11. Flipping switch on the 290 from normal mode to quiet mode and vice versa 12. Various fixes that are specific game related (Disabling in-game for programs, overlays, specific profiles, blah blah) So, for the RAM configuration that I am currently running, I found that I am having the same issues regardless of which RAM kit I have in my system and the fact that I am having the same issue with BOTH kits installed, directs me to thinking that the RAM is not the issue. I do know that RAM problems can emulate problems with other parts of your system... but in this case I think that I have already proved that it is not the RAM. Also, you will note that I have not mentioned what OS I am running, that is because I am currently running Windows 10. But, I have been having the same issues since I was running Windows 7. So I have had these issues with Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 Technical Preview, and 10 Official Release (All fresh installs BTW). Like the RAM, this leads me to believe that my problem is independent of the operating system that I am running. (Does kinda tempt me to try it with Linux though) I think this is about all that I have to say about it. If you have any ideas, please post them cause I am at the end of what I know what to do.
