1. Here's the links for the two builds being proposed. The AMD Threadripper 1950X build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zgk7tJ The i7-8700K build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/zzCvBP What I want to know is if either of these builds will bottleneck on the GPU or CPU, and which is the best for the intended use, which is going for high speed game development, as well as testing and gaming. This is a purely hypothetical build scenario, proposed mostly out of curiosity. Additionally, the initial price tag is no more than $6000 USD, and I do kind of want to preserve the RGB as if I were to spend this much money on a PC, it might as well look cool. And it can be used to monitor system temperature and fan speeds. In theory. EDIT: I should also point out that I would at least make an attempt at overclocking both processors, so it's a matter of which can achieve the least bottle-necking and the best game design productivity and gaming performance when testing high fidelity games (or playing other games for inspiration).
2. so I've got a code that I've started in a program called BlueJ, a work environment used for java. The program I am trying to write is basically a wizard school quiz to find out which school you belong to. If you need to get an Idea if what im trying to make, Im basically trying to replicate the intro quiz from wizard101, which can be found here: https://www.wizard101.com/create_wizard/?utm_campaign=disp_ad2games&utm_source=ad2games.18470_3278p&utm_medium=display&utm_content=wizard If anyone could help me out, I just need help figuring out how to set up basic choices kind of like an A,B,C,D sort of quiz. I just want to learn the fundamentals of writing a small quiz. I am a few weeks into an AP Computer Science class and I just sort of want to learn this concept a little before it is taught. Here is my code so far:
3. Hey, So yesterday I installed KDE Neon on my laptop which surprisingly worked after like the 6th try however it's been awhile since I've actively used linux for anything other than running the occasional server. So I was wondering, what IDE would you guys recommend using? I'm looking for something that I can easily compile C/C++ code in, that has a dark look so it's easy on my eyes, it would also need to be able to allow me to build code from inside the IDE rather than having to manually build my code in a terminal. Optionally it would be nice if the IDE also supported Python and Core JavaScript or allowed me to define new syntax highlighting definitions.
4. i have a column called ID in my table and i have set it to increase by 1 when new data is inserted. when i inserted data like 3 times the ID was 3 but when i added another record instead of showing the ID as 4 it showed 6. i checked my auto increment settings and it was set to increase by 1. i didnt understand what was happening so i dropped the table, made a new one and started entering data. the first time i entered the ID was one but the second time i inserted it showed 4 as ID and the third time in inserted a record ID was 6. what is actually going on? im inserting data using the edit table data mode in sql server however the first time i tried it was using C# and i got the same issue. is this some error in sql server 2014 or am i doing something wrong?
5. HI awesome LTT community, I am going to start my semester soon and I am looking for a new laptop which is specifically light and is powerful enough so it can last my whole degree. In the laptop keyboard is a factor for me. For comparison I currently have a ASUS-K55a and keyboard in that feels small and it's heavy asf. That laptop will be my main computer mostly doing programming. I am really hoping for a 1080p touchscreen but that almost seems impossible, as a programmer I don't foresee it but the only point I am going after is taking notes on touchscreen. Thoughts on touchscreen appreciated. 4k is too much and scaling sucks. I am not looking for high graphics, decent graphics is good. My budget is $1000 - $1500(max) I have been looking at XPS 13(expensive and 4k touch), Yoga 900(techrader says no pen input and shallow keyboard), Zenbook, Surface(keyboards sucks) and more. But I would love to hear from you guys as these things cost a lot especially in australia. And personal experience is far better anyway. Thanks badasses.
6. I am making a program in C++ that needs to download HTML files and extract info from them. The program is to try and figure out my exact nyseg bill by using data from their website. Being a novice in web interaction I managed to figure out how to download webpages with this code: #include <iostream> #include <fstream> #include <string> #include <tchar.h> #include <urlmon.h> #pragma comment(lib, "urlmon.lib") using namespace std; int main() { ifstream fin; string tempString; HRESULT hr = URLDownloadToFile(NULL, _T("http://www.nyseg.com/SuppliersAndPartners/pricingandtariffs/electricitytariffs/transitionchargestatements.html"), _T("nyseg.txt"), 0, NULL); fin.open("nyseg.txt"); for (int i = 0; i < 20; i++) { getline(fin, tempString); cout << tempString << endl << endl; } fin.close(); return 0; } So as long as a I had the url I could then download pages and avoid actually interacting with the pages, until I notice something I think is called postback? This, https://ebiz1.nyseg.com/cusweb/opcosupplyprice.aspx, is a tool for their prices and when you submit to the form the URL doesn't change. The page updates with new information after clicking submit, yet, the URL doesn't change. I spent a few hours looking at the code and researching and I just don't understand it. It uses Javascript in some way and I don't know that language. I see this code in the submit button: onclick="javascript:WebForm_DoPostBackWithOptions(new WebForm_PostBackOptions("btnPage1", "", true, "", "", false, false))" I simply want to know how to get the updated page downloaded so that I can get the information that I need. -Thanks
7. I want to start coding.what is a good starting language that is easy and versatile? I will code on a windows machiene.
8. Hello! I'm planning my first build and would appreciate your opinions, thoughts and tips about it. I will use this computer for pretty much everything but mainly for Android development, that is Android Studio and Gradle. Gradle processes can take too long, especially with big projects, so I want to invest in a powerful machine to reduce the (apps) building time. Apart from that, I enjoy testing the latest technologies and gadgets so having USB type C, Thunderbolt 3, 4K and this kind of things is important for me. To my understanding, what I need is a good CPU, enough amount of RAM and a fast SSD (M.2, I guess). Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I need a GPU as I don't play games. I've heard that X99 chips don't integrate graphics in the processor so I'd go for a 170 motherboard. Kaby Lake processors don't seem to improve performance too much so I'd go for a Skylake i7. But I don't know if the number of CPU cores is important or if overclocking the CPU worths for me. Do you think it would improve the Gradle tasks time? I'll choose between Z170 or H170 motherboard and 6700K or non-K processor depending on that. BEING SPECIFIC NEEDS Powerful machine mainly for Android development. Possibly iOS development in the near future (via Hackintosh if possible or Virtual Machine if not) ATX or microATX motherboard (for more than 2 RAM slots). Micro ATX could be enough but those don't seem to have integrated Wifi/Bluetooth nor latest ports Newest technologies and ports, 4K capabilities... As silent as possible A small case without so many 3.5 HDD places and a full-size window to see my hardware A proper PSU No offence, but I am not a gamer, I don't feel like so and I'd prefer my build not yelling "GAMING" everywhere WHAT I'VE THOUGHT Asus Z170 Deluxe motherboard Intel core i7 6700K processor M.2 SSD with at least 128 GB 16 GB of RAM at least with the possibility to add more in the future PSU with 500W or less, like Corsair SF450 PSU (SFX) NXZT s340 / NXZT s340 Elite / Corsair 400C / Corsair 460x case Air cooling depending on case size QUESTIONS Is the number of cores important for my needs? Does overclock worth for my needs? Can I use a 4K display without a GPU? I think Air cooling is enough for me and water cooling is noisier. Am I right? Pico PSU is not really an option for me even when I'm not using a GPU, right? Are SFX power supplies noisier than ATX ones? Do you know about other cases with that style or even smaller/thinner? Maybe using SFX power supplies... Can I mix RAM sticks with different sizes? (For example 2 * 16 GB and 2 * 8 GB) I'd love to read your comments! Thank you.
9. Dear Members of the Forum! With the recent talks about Floatplane Club, and how @Slick, @CatBoiler and others have been working on it with some nice results, I had the idea, that maybe they could use some help with this project. Now I know programming and a little bit of design and would like to help. Can you guys point me to the right direction how I can do so? Also, is anyone else interested in helping them? Please post your thoughts and suggestions, or if you can please reach out to the people who are responsible for the development. Thank you all in advance! @LinusTech @nicklmg
10. So I am trying to make an arduino based TV-B gone by this instructable: http://www.instructables.com/id/Arduino-TV-B-Gone/ Here is my wiring: https://i.stack.imgur.com/xLAqd.jpg[/img] So my issue appears in Arduino. When I first tried to verify the code I got an error saying I had to put const after the * in this code, both for EUpowerCodes and NApowerCodes: "const struct IrCode *EUpowerCodes[] PROGMEM = {" And So I filled out the const in the areas needed, but then I got this new error where there was an undefined reference to both EUpowerCodes and NApowerCodes. More specifically here's the error message: Arduino:1.6.0 (Windows 8), Card "Arduino Uno" TVB.cpp.o: In function `sendAllCodes()': /Arduino/TVB.pde:261: undefined reference to `NApowerCodes' /Arduino/TVB.pde:261: undefined reference to `NApowerCodes' /Arduino/TVB.pde:264: undefined reference to `EUpowerCodes' /Arduino/TVB.pde:264: undefined reference to `EUpowerCodes' collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status Error by compiling. The error occures at line 261 and 264, here I have the code from line 259 to 265: 259// point to next POWER code, from the right database 260 if (region == NA) { 261 data_ptr = (PGM_P)pgm_read_word(NApowerCodes+i); 262 } 263 else { 264 data_ptr = (PGM_P)pgm_read_word(EUpowerCodes+i); 265 } Now I have tried putting "* cons" or just "const" in front of NApowerCodes and EUpowerCodes, and removing + i, and putting "const struct IrCode *EUpowerCodes[] PROGMEM = {" instead inside of the parenthesis. Does anyone know what I did wrong or what I can add of code to fix this? Attached is the TVB file with the undefined reference error. Here is the code (I couldn't include the full code, but I have included what I think is most important. I have attached a file with the full file of the project if you want to take a look at that. void sendAllCodes() { Start_transmission: // startOver will become TRUE if the user pushes the Trigger button while transmitting the sequence of all codes startOver = FALSE; // determine region from REGIONSWITCH: 1 = NA, 0 = EU if (digitalRead(REGIONSWITCH)) { region = NA; num_codes = num_NAcodes; } else { region = EU; num_codes = num_EUcodes; } // for every POWER code in our collection for (i=0 ; i < num_codes; i++) { PGM_P data_ptr; // print out the code # we are about to transmit DEBUGP(putstring("\n\r\n\rCode #: "); putnum_ud(i)); // point to next POWER code, from the right database if (region == NA) { data_ptr = (PGM_P)pgm_read_word(NApowerCodes+i); } else { data_ptr = (PGM_P)pgm_read_word(EUpowerCodes+i); } // print out the address in ROM memory we're reading DEBUGP(putstring("\n\rAddr: "); putnum_uh((uint16_t)data_ptr)); // Read the carrier frequency from the first byte of code structure const uint8_t freq = pgm_read_byte(data_ptr++); // set OCR for Timer1 to output this POWER code's carrier frequency OCR2A = freq; OCR2B = freq / 3; // 33% duty cycle // Print out the frequency of the carrier and the PWM settings DEBUGP(putstring("\n\rOCR1: "); putnum_ud(freq); ); DEBUGP(uint16_t x = (freq+1) * 2; putstring("\n\rFreq: "); putnum_ud(F_CPU/x); ); // Get the number of pairs, the second byte from the code struct const uint8_t numpairs = pgm_read_byte(data_ptr++); DEBUGP(putstring("\n\rOn/off pairs: "); putnum_ud(numpairs)); // Get the number of bits we use to index into the timer table // This is the third byte of the structure const uint8_t bitcompression = pgm_read_byte(data_ptr++); DEBUGP(putstring("\n\rCompression: "); putnum_ud(bitcompression); putstring("\n\r")); // Get pointer (address in memory) to pulse-times table // The address is 16-bits (2 byte, 1 word) PGM_P time_ptr = (PGM_P)pgm_read_word(data_ptr); data_ptr+=2; code_ptr = (PGM_P)pgm_read_word(data_ptr); // Transmit all codeElements for this POWER code // (a codeElement is an onTime and an offTime) // transmitting onTime means pulsing the IR emitters at the carrier // frequency for the length of time specified in onTime // transmitting offTime means no output from the IR emitters for the // length of time specified in offTime #if 0

Edits === I ended up buying a gigabytes P34w v5 for £690 on eBay, it has a I7 6700hq, 970m, 16gb ram, 256gb nvme ssd and 1 tb hdd so I'm happy with the specs. my brothers had a laptop with the 7 series gpus (for age reference) and it is fine hence I wasn't too worried about dust being a problem and the Dell is good but out of my price range when new if I look at the I7 comparatively to the one I bought. I guess I'll see when it comes in 2 days! Original === I'm looking to buy a roughly £700 laptop (at a real push £800) to last me throughout a levels and uni. I've been looking for second hand ones on eBay currently. I use my current computer (which has 12 year old components so no point upgrading it as I may as well buy a new one) for programming, trying to play games from arma 2, dayz, civ 5 and spelunky. I don't play major games currently as they are expensive for 1 game and my quadro fx 5600 is just beyond terrible however I would like to play them in the future. Games like rust are simply unplayable, black mountains, shards, 20 frames a minute. I can't bear an integrated graphics card for fear of suffering the same problems. I've also started learning to produce music so this is a consideration for specs as well. Below is a list of ideal specs so recommendations for good laptops of the recent past and maybe amendments to my sights that may be more reasonable to my budget is generally what I'm looking for. 'Ideal' specs Cpu - I7/I5 (recomendations on which I would need) Gpu - 960m/965m/970m. I've found 970m to be strangely similar in some pricing to 960m... Is it worth waiting for the 1050ti for laptops or even splashing out on a 1060 which I can't really afford right now. Ram - 8-16gb (preferably upgradable if 8gb) Screen - 14"/15" IPS but I wouldn't turn down a 17" Battery - not a huge concern but If I want to use it at uni it may be more of a concern so 4 hours maybe Weight - 2-3kg preferably not only because of the obvious benefits but slimmer profiles are preferable really just for aesthetics (not super likely at £700) The Razer blade ticks all of these boxes but its really expensive, even second hand as well as very limited amounts I'm the UK. Storage - SSD as large as possible but I don't mind a small one now and upgrading later. SSHD seems smart for budgeting. *Cheeky note* If there's any Razer blade competitions like the one I didn't win this Christmas by LTT, please suggest them as the new Razer blade is perfect for me (as well as the 970m one).
12. So i'm very interested in studying the new Vulkan API, except I can't find many resources for it. I'm looking for videos, articles, books, anything really. I found a video series on youtube by a user named Niko Kauppi, but honestly didn't find it very helpful and got a little confused in his explanations. I really work best with articles and books then visual stuff to back it up.
13. I have a problem with my C# Windows Form Application. When i click on a checkbox to turn its state to true it calls a Public void in another class (Class2.callFunction) This Class2.callFunction has code that gets enabled but it freezes my whole application. When i test what the code does outside of the application it works but i want to be able to use the Form still without it been frozen. CheckBox: private void checkBox1_CheckedChanged(object sender, EventArgs e) { if (checkBox1.Checked == true) { Class2 class2 = new Class2(); class2.callFunction(); } } Function Called: public void callFunction() { CODE HERE I CAN NOT SHOW! } The code works but in the call function which is in a class of its own freezes the application when its put into use.
14. Im creating a windows forms application and whenever i try to run my program i get this error: Error 1 Two output file names resolved to the same output path: "obj\x86\Debug\WindowsFormsApplication1.Screen_3.resources" WindowsFormsApplication1 can someone please help me fix it

16. i need to write a program in java and i want to go to another jframe from my current frame after 10 seconds. How can i do this?
17. I'm a Computer Science major and in my Junior year, I feel that I haven't learned all that I wanted to. I met someone in the computer labs who seemed to have an extensive knowledge on software engineering, I asked him where he gained all of this knowledge and he said he bought 6 textbooks that he learned from. Unfortunately, he had to head to class before he could give me the name of the books he bought. I just wanted to ask what programming and software engineering books do you guys recommend for someone who wants to be a full stack engineer?
18. Hi there, I have recently came up with an idea for a game which uses completely online server. I was wondering if anyone knows or can point me in the right direction to set up public servers for my game idea. I am a Game Design College Student but we are not touching off Servers at all. So i want to learn for myself. If anyone can help this would be much appreciated Thanks in advance
19. Hey guys, so I am looking for a laptop for programming. Last week I just sold my surface book, I liked it, but I feel like a 13inch laptop is too small for programming. and my current alienware 15 is too heavy There is really no budget limit here but I hope it could be lower than 2000 bucks. I want a 15 inch (or 14?)laptop with good typing experience, the build quality should also be good, battery life around 4-5 hours. Is razer blade good for programming? I owned a xps 15 before , anyone knows when will the new version be released? THX
20. Bit of a dump here, but my focus is on the printstub() function in the tester file and the functions that it uses, as for Total Deductions and Net Pay I get inf, and -inf respectively. 21. brief overview of what I want my app to do, it takes in the previous configured wifi information and saves them to a table. I have everything working apart from these two problems: Problem 1: So whenever I try and check if the wifi is enabled on the device, the app will crash. Here is the code for the Wifi problem: public void checkWifiState() { if(!wifi.isWifiEnabled()) { Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Wifi is disabled, please enable it", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); wifi.setWifiEnabled(true); } } EDIT: found out that wifi.setWifiEnabled(true); is what is breaking the app for Problem 1. Problem 2: I want to drop my table and recreate it, whenever the user trys to press the button to check previous connections. The reason for this is becuase I don't want duplicate data in the database. here is the code for the SQLite problem: this is in a seperate java file called DatabaseHelper that extends SQLiteOpenHelper public void dropTableAndCreateNew() { SQLiteDatabase db = this.getWritableDatabase(); db.delete(TABLE_NAME,null,null); onCreate(db); } I have tried setting the whereClause to "1" on the delete method. It still crashed when I tried to run it on my phone.
