Hi, I'd like to know your opinions about the PC I'm building. I will use it for coding on Linux and gaming and video editing on Windows. FYI I'm currently using a Dell Vostro 3700 with a 2.4 Ghz core i5 and I am able to edit videos and playing a few games. I've been able to finish Arkham City without changing the default settings. I have about 30 games released between 2009 and 2013 in my Steam library, so I don't plan to play very recent games for the moment, otherwise I'm okay with reducing the settings. So these are the components : - CPU Intel core i3 4330 - Case Zalman ZM T4 - CPU Cooler Thermaltake Nic - PSU LDLC QS-450+ Quality Select 80PLUS Gold (it's French !) - Motherboard ASRock H81M - Graphic card Sapphire Radeon R7 260X 2G GDDR5 - RAM memory Kingston DDR3 1600 8 Go KVR CL9 HyperX - Keyboard Zalman ZM-K400G - Hard drive SSHD Seagate 1 To So the total price shouldn't be above 500€. I already have some of the components : the CPU cooler, the PSU and the RAM. I'll order the HDD this weekend. For the next evolutions, I planned to buy a SSD (unless SSHD become better), do a crossfire and maybe change the CPU. But I won't do any change before Christmas. So are there better choices to make? Thanks

I'm trying to find some online courses for Game Design and Programming. Can any of you recommend any, with the price of them. I'm a beginner at both. -Thanks

So I think I am going to slow down my gaming and learn a computer language, but because I'm a noob I have no idea which one. I know there is going to be different opinions, but is there a general good one to start with. I'm also going to have to learn touch typing first (im only 15) so should I change my keyboard layout from WASD (on a corsair k90) and get a cheap dvorak keyboard and start on that? Whats the best operating system/distro to start with? Also, I know how to run linux commands ect, if that helps whatsoever with programming. AS I said, I am a complete utter noob. Thanks

As the title implies. How extensive are your programming skills? Talk about -How it start for you, where do you learn? -What level would you claim you're at? [beginner, Depth Understanding, Complete Understanding] -Languages you are familiar with. - The kind of programs you are able to create on your own. "hello world"? - what have you created so from? I'll go first, My interest in programming came from basic website language. At 13 I was making websites from mobile use only and the whole idea of programming a software just felt like the right thing. I started watching tutorial on programming languages. I mainly focused on of C++ because it looked cool (all of which I dont remember now). Thats because I didn't know what its purpose was. Im still at the beginner level, im currently doing C in school. And Im starting to feel that motivation I once had to program. I haven't created anything other than basic homework and couple programs I knock together for fun, just to see what it would do. What about you? In this post Im really looking for guidance, anyone who is willing to help me. Im a fast learner and school is coming to an end after exams in June, I'll be done. Happy coding.

Hi, I'm looking for a new keyboard used for gaming (mostly FPS), programming and project development. I do not have any experience in using mechanical keyboards (or maybe I do If the Commodore C128 had a mechanical keyboard). Here is what I would require from a keyboard: - Longer key travel (my Logitech media 600 has a medium key travel), i dont like slim keyboards like chiclet or notebook keyboards. - More force needed to press (most membrane keyboards I've used simply don't feel right) - Samsung SL1500 was a fantastic keyboard (large key caps, long travel before bottoming up, good force neded to actuate the key) but it died on me. - Black color or mostly black. - Antighosting or N-KRO so that "THE QUICK BROWN FOX JUMPS OVER THE LAZY DOG" written while holding both Shift keys doesn't look like "HE QUIC BROWN OX UMP OVER HE Y OG" (my media 600) or "HE čQIC čROWN čOX čMPS čVER čHE čY čOG" (my notebook). - ISO layout (large Enter key) with EU, UK, DE, SLO or best CRO symbols. And a wrist rest would be preferred. Here are my options, from these stores: http://www.links.hr/?option=katList&page=sviartikli&id_kategorija=1012&sort_cat=cijena_s_pdv&sort_ord=desc http://www.adm.hr/index.php?cPath=258_51&page=1&sort=3d http://www.portio.hr/index.php?page=katList&cat=01070101&sort=4&pg=1 http://www.protis.hr/products/index/tipkovnice/147?filter=edMwA1AHwAfgB8AHwAfgB8AFQAaQBwAGsAbwB2AG4AaQBjAGEAfAB-AHwAVABpAHAAbwB2AGkAIABhAHIAdABpAGsAbABhAHwAJAB8ADEAMgAwADgAfAB-AHwAfAB-AHwAfQFpAA0BbgBhAHwAfgB8AFYAcgBzAHQAYQA%3D http://www.centro.hr/kategorije.02595960edb34c9692b5178926f2bd48.tipkovnice.aspx I wouldn't go over 1000 Kn (~170$), maybe 1100 Kn MAX. Would a mechanical keyboard be any good? Most mechanical keyboards here use Cherry MX Red (CM Storm Quickfire Rapid, Pro, TK, Corsair Vengeance K60, K70, K90), how would they fit my needs? Some use MX Black (Steelseres 7G, 6Gv2, CM Storm Trigger), blues only from Razer (and I don't like them) and the only one with Brown is logitech G710+. Thanks for your help.

So this was just a general topic of discussion that I was hoping people might have some insight into. Some of you might know of Andrei Alexandrescu from his work with C++ (particularly with Modern C++ Design etc.), anyway he's been working on the D language (http://dlang.org/) with its original creator for a while now as a proposed successor to C++ attempting to provide memory safety while still enabling low-level access (including in-line assembly) and I was just wondering if anyone has had much experience with the D language? I know it's not yet gathered any where near as much support to be taken as a serious successor to C++ but i'm interested in people's experience with the language as I was thinking of taking it up in the summer once I finish university. The ability to combine functional and imperative programming in the same language is definitely of interest to me as this may be important if I take up the PhD offer for next year.

To make the programming section of the forum more mainstream, I am developing an ultimate programming resources thread. It can be found here: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/14904-ultimate-programming-resources-thread/?p=166788 Please have a look, and if you could then please contribute. If you have nothing to contribute then but are interested in starting to program then please check it out; you may learn a lot.

Hello, I am a 2nd year university student who is approaching the 3rd year this September. I am required to create a major project which will be worth nearly 50% of my final mark. I am thinking along the lines of creating a mobile application for the Android platform but it can be desktop software. However, i'm not sure what to create for this app. Please can you help me think of ideas to do for this upcoming project. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. :) Thanks in advance

Will Android Studio be automatically updated on your system, or will you have to download future versions as they come out? It's not that I'm lazy, I'm just terrible at keeping up with software versions as they come out. Also, I'm in the middle of downloading it now, what's everyone's experience like with it? Is the emulator better?

I have been thinking about making a tutorial for beginners for some time but never had the time. Now that I have some free time, I decided to begin now. I am hoping to start two series. The first series is a beginners/intermediates tutorial while the second series is a user’s choice tutorial where users PM me a topic title they want me to create a tutorial for and after a vote I will create a tutorial showing how to code the choice with the most vote. The topic titles can be in the form “how to make a calculator in VB”, “how to make a Point of Sale website” or something along those lines. I will also be answering any question that any users might have in text or video form depending on the question that the users ask. I hope you will give me feedback by replying. The feedbacks can be about improvement that can be made to my idea and/or any other feedback you might have. NOTE: This is just a thread to see what the user feedback is. Do not send me a topic title for the second series before I update this thread or create a new one. Edit: Updated poll to include more options.

How do I do this? I would like to retrieve a number from a text file, increment it by one replace the one in the file with the incremented one and save it. The text file has just 1 number at the first line of the document. package modifying;import java.io.File;import java.io.PrintWriter;import java.util.Scanner;public class Modify { public static void incrementByOne(){ try { File input = new File("/modifying/assets/timesPlayed.txt"); File temp = new File("/modifying/assets/temp.txt"); Scanner sc = new Scanner(input); PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(temp); int i = sc.nextInt(); i += 1; pw.write(i); sc.close(); pw.close(); input.delete(); temp.renameTo(input); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public static void main(String[] args){ incrementByOne(); } } When I try to execute this code it just gives me the FileNotFoundException.

So... ummm, yeah, my university requires us to do some work in Fortran-66. I agree that that is stupid as hell (and we can't use at least Pascal because... reasons), but the work has to be done, and I need a compiler that will work on my laptop (and I'm too lazy to install Windows on VM, unless there are no other options whatsoever). I've signed up for Intel's Fortran Complier trial, but they've yet to send me a confirmation email... Any suggestions?

Recently I have been looking into programming, and would like to give it a crack. Anyone out there have any suggestions as to the best one to learn for a beginner, or any tutorials? Before anyone jumps in and says don't, it's waste of time etc, I would like to make that decision myself. Cheers.

Problem #1 - Deletable Primes So here's the first problem for a (hopefully) fun series of Problem Solving challenges! I solved a similar problem as a part of my introductory course to programming at University, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Problem Description: A Deletable Prime is a prime number from which you can remove digits one at a time, and each iteration of this removal gives you another prime. Let's look at an example of a deletable prime: 410256793 41256793 4125673 415673 45673 4567 467 67 7 All of the numbers above are prime, and deletable (by definition). It is worth noting that numbers such as: 10859 859 59 5 Are not Deletable Primes, because the removal of digit 1 implied the removal of digit 0 (10859 => 859), and thus it is not a valid sequence. Your objective is to find all of the Deletable Primes in range [0, 10000000], and output the number of Deletable Primes in that range, as well as their sum. Input: None. Output: Two lines. At the end of every line there must be a line break (\n). The first line is the number of Deletable Primes existing in the interval [0, 10000000]. The second line is the sum of all of those Deletable Primes. Example Output (range [0, 10000]): 699 3168960 How to test your solution: I have built a very simple web gateway. It is still very much in BETA, as it was developed in a few hours for this purpose. The gateway has a listing of problems, and you create an account to submit your program's output to check if it is the correct solution to a given problem. The problem page there is also easier on the eyes than this thread's formatting (my bad!). I chose this method because I don't like giving out the solution to problems, and it's fun because we can have a small gateway where we can check each other's stats. I'll be adding new features to the gateway eventually. Without further ado, you can test your solution through the gateway located at this link. It is very simple to use, and I hope the community enjoys it. The account creation process is very minimal, and your password is salt-hashed. Final notes: Create your account at the gateway with the same username as the one you use at the forums. Include your code in spoiler tags, so that the thread isn't cluttered with code. If you're having trouble solving the problem, ask the community for help! You may learn a lot from them. Don't worry too much about efficiency if you're starting out. Solve the problem first, we'll then tell you how to improve it. Please don't share the output solution if you've solved the problem. If the problem description isn't clear, please ask for further explanation!

Hello everyone, I would like to have an opinion on the surface pro 1, to see if it is worth to be bought. I'm 16 and I would use it at school, and for programming in visual studio (c#), now my questions are: 1) Can it run visual studio smoothly ? 2) Is it worth buying the 128Gb model at the price of 699 € (942$ I'm in italy  ) ? 3) Are there any better alternatives that still are highly portable ? p.s. In my current setup I have a laptop with a brocken screen converted to a desktop pc with a pentium p6100@ 2.0Ghz and an mobility radeon 5470 OC. Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english.

Hi guys, So I want to set up a batch file to run every day at a certain time. I will use Windows' Schedule Task to do this. So that part is easy enough. However, I want it to back up files from a directory to another directory on a server. Every time I have used it, even with tinkering with the switches that I can set, it will only ever copy the folder structure, but never the actual files. Very annoying. Here is the batch file: @[member=Echo] offxcopy C:\Users\ILSAPKP\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\ \\10.0.12.10\users1\ppringle\emailbackup /c /e /h /i /j /k /m /q /r /s /v /y /z Yes, I want all of those switches. Unless one is doing the equivalent of the /t switch (which only copies the folder structure but no actual files). As that is what it appears to be doing. Now, I am essentially wanting to back up my emails. My emails are brought to my actual computer and not left on the servers of the company related to the service. There are databases with my emails in them in the Thunderbird directory. These are what is not copying. Thunderbird is closed. The IP address in the destination is the U: drive (it is not U: on everyone's computer), and I just wanted to test if it actually works before trying to find a way to replace the "ppringle" in that folder directory with something like %username%. Can a batch file pull a username and use it like that? Or will that simply not work? I suppose I could try putting the batch file in everyone's folder and just removing the destination, but that would be more work (lol). Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Vitalius
