// Title says it all. What inspired you guys to start coding? I just started learning Python because I've always been interested in how the software that I use in my everyday life actually works. I really enjoy it so far (:

Heya fellas! I've recently been watching some programming tutorials for C and was wondering what the cleanest way of starting your opening braces is. In the tutorials that I'm watching the instructor uses this method: #include<stdio.h>main() { int a; printf("Enter a integer less than 10: "); scanf("%d", &a); if(a < 10) { printf("Integer is less than 10\n"); }else { printf("Integer is more than or equal to 10\n"); }} But I tend to prefer this way: #include<stdio.h>main(){ int a; printf("Enter a integer less than 10: "); scanf("%d", &a); if(a < 10){ printf("Integer is less than 10\n"); }else{ printf("Integer is more than or equal to 10\n"); }} I actually don't remember where I picked this up, I've never really done much programming. What method do you prefer and why?

Hey guys! I took my AP comsci placement test and I failed. I do feel bad about it but I am retaking the exam on August 24th. I was not given an answer key to see what the right answer is for each question and I don't know why the answers I put are wrong. Can anyone take a look at the pictures included and point me in the right direction? ANY help would be amazing. IMGUR Link: http://imgur.com/a/oih0q Thanks a lot, sribeast21

This is going to be my first build and I would really appreciate some advice. This is mainly going to be a workstation for application development. Gaming, video editing and 3d rendering might happen but it is not the main purpose of the build. I develop highly concurrent applications so more core is better I prefer stability over balls-to-the-wall performance, so no overclocking is going to happen The build needs to support 3 screens (already have 1, need to buy 2) Monitors should be able to pivot in portrait mode and if possible have a VESA mount. Linux will be the *only* operating system I already have my input peripherals (keyboard and mouse) The build needs to be as quiet as possible Budget is 2000$CAD (canada) Here is what I have so far: PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1240 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($274.98 @ SuperBiiz) CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U9B SE2 37.9 CFM CPU Cooler ($44.98 @ OutletPC) Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme6 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($189.99 @ SuperBiiz) Memory: Crucial Ballistix Elite 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($162.00 @ Amazon) Storage: OCZ Vertex 460 240GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($139.99 @ Amazon) Storage: Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($149.35 @ OutletPC) Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Superclocked Video Card ($139.99 @ Amazon) Case: Fractal Design Define R4 (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case ($89.99 @ Micro Center) Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($85.98 @ SuperBiiz) Monitor: Dell U2412M 60Hz 24.0" Monitor ($238.49 @ Amazon) Monitor: *Dell U2412M 60Hz 24.0" Monitor ($238.49 @ Amazon) Total: $1754.23 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available *Lowest price parts chosen from parametric criteria Generated by PCPartPicker 2014-08-01 12:48 EDT-0400 Here are my main questions about this build: Video card: How good are the drivers support under linux? Am I better with ATI or GeForce chipsets? SSD drives... Intel 730 series are considerably more expensive, are they worth it? Motherboard: I don't need overclocking support but high-bandwidth memory support and a lot of room for HD expansion is needed. CPU: I don't care for onboard graphics or overclocking so I went with a Xeon processor, is it a good choice or am I still better with an i7? I plan to expand to 32Gb of memory in the future (hence the 2 x 8Gb dimms) and add more SSDs and HD also. Thanks mo

I'm in high school and I want to learn a programming language. My school has a Java course but I won't be able to take that until senior year. I want to know which programming language I should learn first. Should I learn Python, C++, or C#? I have pretty much no prior programming experience at all.

Ok, So I thought of an idea of having a button create a new button dynamically, which would give it a new name and put it into a listbox which you would be able to edit the size and location of the buttons as well as delete them too. Any ideas how I would be able to go about doing something like that? I got the idea from looking at how you can dynamically add stuff in basically any editing program. Like how in photoshop you can add a new layer and it will pop up with a name like "layer1" then "layer2" and so on then you can do stuff with the object and delete them... But doing it in a C# Forms Application and using Buttons or any other object like a picturebox or a panel.

So I'm a freshman in high school but I've already been given private tours and summer classes by MIT and Harvard who approached me earlier in the year. I'm fairly sure I'm going to attend one of those schools and so I have a question. Computer Science or Computer Engineering? I'm tempted to go into Computer Engineering because I really like hardware but I also really enjoy programming and I'm worried that I won't get enough programming in Computer Engineering. Another thing I'm really REALLY interested in is Networking/Hacking. I've done research but I can't really find which major covers Networking/Ethical Hacking more. And my use of the term "Hacking" includes reverse engineering and cracking but obviously also network based Hacking, be it ethical or not, I'm not really one for ethics. So to sum it up I'm interested in -Hardware -Programming -Networking -Reverse Engineering/Hacking Which major do you think covers these topics more/better? And which of said schools do you think would be better for the chosen major? --Thanks mates

Greetings everyone, Firstly, I apologize if this is posted in the wrong area. I require some advice about deploying a website that has been in development for some time now (i.e. Countless templates (custom and pre-built), optimizations, etc). I am a semi-noob programmer though I am very knowledgeable in terms of HTML, CSS, and Javascript, and less so with things like PHP, server/website administration, etc. Throughout countless videos I have watched, I have heard like don't run as root admin, .htaccess, etc. Yet I know absolutely nothing about any of those aspects. I usually research aspects such as these thoroughly, but conclusively get conflicting reports. So my question is there anything else I should really know before diving deep into this and run into trouble with attacks, hackers, etc? Additionally, I am considering the following to handle my web hosting, but feel free to suggest any good ones you know of: A Small Orange (ASO) FatCow HostGator NearlyFreeSpeech Site5 Thanks in advance, Mr. Cyborg

There has always been two things i really wanted to be, first was a game designer/developer and the other was a web designer. Well life and other crap got in the way of a formal programming education so i just ended up as a web designer/ computer technician which isn't bad but my dream is incomplete. Been gaming alot lately and just like that the old flame was re-lit like the beacon of gondor, just this morning infact, so i think i'll give it a go. All that out of the way i need to know where do i start, what language and what programs i'll need...first project will be one man so i'm thinking cube world/hyperlight drifter. Something that will look good but i can do on my own for now. Whatever advice you can give will be appreciated, but i'm serious about this so serious advice....Thanks in advance

Problem #1 - Deletable Primes So here's the first problem for a (hopefully) fun series of Problem Solving challenges! I solved a similar problem as a part of my introductory course to programming at University, so it shouldn't be too difficult. Problem Description: A Deletable Prime is a prime number from which you can remove digits one at a time, and each iteration of this removal gives you another prime. Let's look at an example of a deletable prime: 410256793 41256793 4125673 415673 45673 4567 467 67 7 All of the numbers above are prime, and deletable (by definition). It is worth noting that numbers such as: 10859 859 59 5 Are not Deletable Primes, because the removal of digit 1 implied the removal of digit 0 (10859 => 859), and thus it is not a valid sequence. Your objective is to find all of the Deletable Primes in range [0, 10000000], and output the number of Deletable Primes in that range, as well as their sum. Input: None. Output: Two lines. At the end of every line there must be a line break (\n). The first line is the number of Deletable Primes existing in the interval [0, 10000000]. The second line is the sum of all of those Deletable Primes. Example Output (range [0, 10000]): 699 3168960 How to test your solution: I have built a very simple web gateway. It is still very much in BETA, as it was developed in a few hours for this purpose. The gateway has a listing of problems, and you create an account to submit your program's output to check if it is the correct solution to a given problem. The problem page there is also easier on the eyes than this thread's formatting (my bad!). I chose this method because I don't like giving out the solution to problems, and it's fun because we can have a small gateway where we can check each other's stats. I'll be adding new features to the gateway eventually. Without further ado, you can test your solution through the gateway located at this link. It is very simple to use, and I hope the community enjoys it. The account creation process is very minimal, and your password is salt-hashed. Final notes: Create your account at the gateway with the same username as the one you use at the forums. Include your code in spoiler tags, so that the thread isn't cluttered with code. If you're having trouble solving the problem, ask the community for help! You may learn a lot from them. Don't worry too much about efficiency if you're starting out. Solve the problem first, we'll then tell you how to improve it. Please don't share the output solution if you've solved the problem. If the problem description isn't clear, please ask for further explanation!

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site, was up way too late after I found the YouTube channel last night. So much stuff to learn! I'm a game programmer and artist, and I've been on a 2011 iMac for the past few years. It's not powerful enough to run Unreal Engine 4, so I'm working on my first desktop build. Excited to get back into the Windows world and check out all the games I've missed, too. The software I'll be using most is Photoshop, Illustrator, AE, Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine, and VS2013. I've put this build together based on some recommended specs posted by the Unreal staff. Since I code iOS apps I'd also like to have the option to Hackintosh it in case the iMac dies, so I've tried to follow this recommended build from tonymacx86 as well. Here's my part list, trying to stay under $2000: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Kx8Zzy I'd love some feedback since I'm pretty clueless about all this! The mobo has some pretty bad reviews on Newegg, but I've seen it listed in a lot of successful builds as well. I'm also not entirely sure I've chosen the right PSU and graphics card - I know I want a GeForce and not a Quadro, not sure if the 780 would be a better choice for this type of work though. Really, any tips about anything would be a huge help! Thanks so much for taking a look!

Recently I have been looking into programming, and would like to give it a crack. Anyone out there have any suggestions as to the best one to learn for a beginner, or any tutorials? Before anyone jumps in and says don't, it's waste of time etc, I would like to make that decision myself. Cheers.

Ok so actually "The Intel challange" was for my friend (sorry I'm from phone and posted the challange 2 times).So I want a gaming PC for programming and very very little video editing (cut here and there paste music here that kind of stuff) I want to play the new gen games atleast at medium at 1080p I will have dual monitors (one fullHD and an old one 1280x1024). I need a lot of storage and thats all of my requirements. I want it as cheap as possible and I already have case and OS and mousr/keyboard. So I am waiting for suggestions. Man I love this forum

I have been thinking about making a tutorial for beginners for some time but never had the time. Now that I have some free time, I decided to begin now. I am hoping to start two series. The first series is a beginners/intermediates tutorial while the second series is a user’s choice tutorial where users PM me a topic title they want me to create a tutorial for and after a vote I will create a tutorial showing how to code the choice with the most vote. The topic titles can be in the form “how to make a calculator in VB”, “how to make a Point of Sale website” or something along those lines. I will also be answering any question that any users might have in text or video form depending on the question that the users ask. I hope you will give me feedback by replying. The feedbacks can be about improvement that can be made to my idea and/or any other feedback you might have. NOTE: This is just a thread to see what the user feedback is. Do not send me a topic title for the second series before I update this thread or create a new one. Edit: Updated poll to include more options.

So... ummm, yeah, my university requires us to do some work in Fortran-66. I agree that that is stupid as hell (and we can't use at least Pascal because... reasons), but the work has to be done, and I need a compiler that will work on my laptop (and I'm too lazy to install Windows on VM, unless there are no other options whatsoever). I've signed up for Intel's Fortran Complier trial, but they've yet to send me a confirmation email... Any suggestions?

How do I do this? I would like to retrieve a number from a text file, increment it by one replace the one in the file with the incremented one and save it. The text file has just 1 number at the first line of the document. package modifying;import java.io.File;import java.io.PrintWriter;import java.util.Scanner;public class Modify { public static void incrementByOne(){ try { File input = new File("/modifying/assets/timesPlayed.txt"); File temp = new File("/modifying/assets/temp.txt"); Scanner sc = new Scanner(input); PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(temp); int i = sc.nextInt(); i += 1; pw.write(i); sc.close(); pw.close(); input.delete(); temp.renameTo(input); } catch (Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } } public static void main(String[] args){ incrementByOne(); } } When I try to execute this code it just gives me the FileNotFoundException.

So, I was wondering how I make an executable program from my program I've written in Java so some of my friends can play with it. This is probably basic knowledge to most of you here, but I have searched for an answer for a few weeks now, until I decided to ask the nice people on this forum. If someone is interested in the source code, it's available on Github : https://github.com/Vogeltak/Hangman It's just a basic text-based hangman game, for practicing (is it practicing or practising) purposes. If you have tips on how to improve my code, I would value your feedback! Because I'm sure there are some things wrong with it, or done inefficiently.. Thank you

Heyo guys, There is a slight problem I encountered a few hours ago. I have a char array and a string. If you put together the values of the different indexes of the array you'll get the exact same as the string. There is a problem though, whenever I do that and compare those two , they apparently are NOT the same. I don't understand it. If someone could explain this to me I would be very grateful. Here is the sample code I setup, I don't want to bother you with my main program I'm writing, this snippet of code just highlights the problem: public class Start { public static void main(String[] args){ char[] c = {'H', 'E', 'Y'}; String s = "HEY"; String cs = new String(c); if(s == cs){ System.out.println("true"); } } }

Hi, I'd like to know your opinions about the PC I'm building. I will use it for coding on Linux and gaming and video editing on Windows. FYI I'm currently using a Dell Vostro 3700 with a 2.4 Ghz core i5 and I am able to edit videos and playing a few games. I've been able to finish Arkham City without changing the default settings. I have about 30 games released between 2009 and 2013 in my Steam library, so I don't plan to play very recent games for the moment, otherwise I'm okay with reducing the settings. So these are the components : - CPU Intel core i3 4330 - Case Zalman ZM T4 - CPU Cooler Thermaltake Nic - PSU LDLC QS-450+ Quality Select 80PLUS Gold (it's French !) - Motherboard ASRock H81M - Graphic card Sapphire Radeon R7 260X 2G GDDR5 - RAM memory Kingston DDR3 1600 8 Go KVR CL9 HyperX - Keyboard Zalman ZM-K400G - Hard drive SSHD Seagate 1 To So the total price shouldn't be above 500€. I already have some of the components : the CPU cooler, the PSU and the RAM. I'll order the HDD this weekend. For the next evolutions, I planned to buy a SSD (unless SSHD become better), do a crossfire and maybe change the CPU. But I won't do any change before Christmas. So are there better choices to make? Thanks
