Hello everyone! Sorry for the long post maybe I should have made two but I really don't know what to do. So, first things first, I need a new pc and I make 800$ a month. With that out of the way I have never used a desktop pc and never built one all I know is thanks to Linus. What I do on my pc is unfortunately a lot. I say unfortunately because you can all understand it's a very bad experience when you game, record music, edit videos (or at least try) on a 4core 1.8ghz cpu and a gtx 720m 1gb ddr3 card........ After this part of the post things will get difficoult to follow but I beg you to stay with me. Question 1. Do I stick with a laptop going for the new Dell 15 7000 series (in italy they sell also a config with i7, 16gb ram and 128gb ssd on top of the 1tb hdd) or do i build a desktop for the same money (the model with above specs comes with a UHD 15inc display and costs about 1300$)? Question 2. If I go for the laptop is it better to buy the full optional or the base model (keep in mind in Italy it doesn't come in the i5 config only i7, 8gb ram, no ssd, 1080p 15inch display and it goes for about 1000$) and buy an 8gb ram stick and a 256gb m2 ssd as i would spend less and 1080p display is less demanding both for gpu and the battery? If you think the second config is the best remember I know nothing about this stuff so I need help on models for both the ram and the ssd Question 3. If I decide to blindly follow Linus vids and try to build my own desktop (always 1300$ monitor included) do you have any suggestions? Remember I also record music so I need a silent case (like the R5 from Fractal). The only things I know are that I wouldn't go higher or lower than a gtx 970 (I know AMD is cheaper but I am an Nvidia fan), no less than 16gb ram, i5 4690 (i don't really plan to overclock) and I don't think I wanna go with skylake as ddr4 ram is more expensive. Sooo..... If you are still here you already deserve a huge thank you! What should I do? I hope it was understandable as my english needs some improvements

Would you buy rift for example to boost productivity, get 3D ( for modeling, art, fun, movies, ... ), to sit on sofa not needing to sit behind computer screen, to not ruin eye sight, to control drones or RC planes, to block out outside world / light, to develop something,... It can be whatever you think of. Please only answer if you are able to buy rift at its current price.

What is on your desk and why? Is it something that you thought looked cool? Or is it something that increased your productivity in work or performance whilst gaming. I would like to know what you have on your desk, where you got it from (e.g website, boot-sale, etc. etc) and how it helps you in your day-to-day lifestyle. Also pictures would be pretty cool -Croum

Amazon: http://geni.us/nRK NCIX: http://bit.ly/1RjzivM Linus has always labeled devices as large as the Note 5 as stupid and not-well-suited for humans... But did the Note 5 change his mind?

Hey guys, I was wondering if you could suggest a CPU for light gaming (Minecraft et al.) and productivity (Programming and other homework for the university, and freelance webdev work). I already did some research but it seems to be hard to find reviews not focused on gaming which is not really my main priority. I think a "real" gaming CPU would be overkill so could you suggest a CPU or point me to some reviews not entirely focused on gaming? Current system: i5-2500k 8gb Corsair Vengeance RAM Sapphire R9 380X My mainboard died however and buying a new one (Socket 1155 Chipset p67/z77) is almost impossible and even used ones are very expensive. I can sell my i5-2500k for 150€ so I thought it would be best to sell my current CPU and buy a new modern mainboard and CPU combo. My total budget for both is ~500€ (including the 150€ I'll get for my 2500k). Thank you, Hendrikto

Hi All, Here's my first ever self-build that I'm planning for the near future. After much googling and research, I've come up with the following components. While not strictly a gaming rig, I am building this PC so that I can play Fallout 4, as well as GTA V and Borderlands. OK, so maybe it's a gaming rig of sorts, but I'll mainly be using the PC for web-browsing and office applications. With that in mind, could you please give me your opinions and criticisms of this build? I'm open to all suggestions. The PSU and monitor, in particular, were a little difficult to choose, so if you've got better options in mind, let me know. Thanks in advance! So I'm buying a new mouse and keyboard mainly for productivity, and would like them both to be wireless and preferably a back-lit keyboard So far the best option I could find was the logitech k800 and a performance mx bundle for £100 (~$150USD) or the same k800 with an mx master for £137 (~$210USD). Is the mx master worth the £37 extra or is there a better combination for the money?

Hi guys i hope everyone is doing well. Due to a recent bike accident, my trusty lenovo y580 ceased to exist, and i'm in search of a new laptop to use with will mainly be the Adobe suite (Illustrator,Photoshop,Premier,After and Flash) to give you some background this wouldn't be my main workstation as i have a PC at work (i7 4770, gtx 660ti, 8Gb Ram) but i would work on it (the laptop) a lot nonetheless, i would love to have some good battery life as i was tired of having to plug my lenovo only an hour after a 100% charge. Ok, so i was wondering if the lack of performance of the i7 4510u (being a dual core and lower clock speed) is compensated with a good battery life? (i mean like a noticeable difference) So far i have the these options Hp Envy 15 K050la i7 4510u, 8GB Ram, GT 840M, 15.6'' 1080p, Backlit keyboard HP Pavilion 14-e018la i7 4702MQ, 8GB Ram, Radeon HD 8670M, 14'' 720P Asus K751lb i7 5500u, 8gb Ram, 940M, 17'' 1080p, Backlit Keyboard Asus Q550lf I7 4500u, 8GB Ram, 745M, 15.6'' Touch 1080p, Backlit Keyboard The only Quad core processor is the one that lacks more features, i'm really inclined to go with one of the i7 U processors but i'm afraid that the hit in performance is gonna be noticeable in a big way, i have an SSD that would change for whatever HDD that the laptop has, so that why i don't mention it. I'm really overwhelmed by all of this and i wanted your opinion on the subject. Tanks to everyone who takes the time to read and comment !

Hello, a friend of mine asked me to build him a pc for his workplace with a total budget of 750 euros. He will be working in mostly adobe photoshop and adobe inteligent document platform, and another program that his office uses, not that heavy He said that he would like to have 32 gigs of rams since he tends to have multiple programms at once, but i think 16 gigs will be more than fine. Use de.pcpartcker if possible, since the prices in greece are pretty much the same.

Hi, I have just brought all of these parts and wanted your opinion on this build. It's for gaming, editing, 3D animation and heavy work tasks. I also wanted it to be a very small form factor for traveling around a lot and for it to be very quiet. Thanks and this is the build: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/bxrp6h

As the question states, what is the best monitor for £100 to £150. It has to quite large and easy on the eyes to prevent eyestrain. Thanks. PS; Stupid question... Are 2 monitors bad for your eyes?

First of all hi I'm a new member. So I'm looking for a laptop that I can use for school that I can game on. The things I would be doing with it in school are mostly ms word for taking notes and a pdf reader. I need it to last a minimum of 5 hours. The games that I would like to play are the newer titles. For the size either a 15.6" or a 17.3" and preferably a touch screen display, and it doesn't need to be 4K. I don't plan to play the games on ultra high settings just mid settings is fine. I have a budget of 1500 dollars. One more thing, it needs to be able to handle future games. Thanks in advance

Please do not use the following arguments: - Windows has more games. I agree windows is the winning operating system for gamers but please do not use this as an argument. - The hardware is cheaper, this is very true but i'm asking about the OS and not the hardware. EDIT: Hate is a strong word. Why do you prefer Windows over OS X?

Alright so, I'm planing to build a new PC on the beginning of next year, and I'm here to ask you guys about it so I'm still deciding if I should go X99 or Z170 Money isn't an issue here I will be gaming, streaming, video editing and probably come college work with it when I get to college. I live in the UAE so not all the parts are available current PC specs are in the desk, what I'll salvage from it is the SSD, HDD Graphics card and maybe go 2-way or 3-way SLI im not sure the case as well so yeah

Hi all. I decided I want a laptop that I can carry with me to college to take notes and do stuff on the go. I'm looking for a 13-15 inch laptop, focused on portability. The tasks I'm going to do with it are productivity stuff (edit docs, slideshows) and since I'm a computer science student, I'll be using it for coding very frequently. I don't really need fancy graphics or a laptop to be able to play, that's what I have my desktop PC for. I prefer a thinner and lighter computer than a heavier but more powerful one. Right now I'm not intersted in 2-in-1 PCs, I prefer a classic laptop with a keyboard to type on. I've already done some research and found some interesting models of which I'd like to know your opinion. I liked the Zenbook UX303(i54210U 6GbRAM/i75500U 8Gb RAM) and UX305 (this one with CoreM, I don't know if it'll be enough. It's crazy light and thing though). The UX303 cost 850EUR and 920EUR respectively, the UX305 being a bit cheaper, although I'm not sure about it because it's coming to Spain next month. Just so you know more or less what the prices are here (unfortunately more expensive) The budget is what I say in the title. Altough I could consider spending 1000EUR, it'll be best if the price tag was around 900EUR so I don't have to break the bank. I'm looking for opinion on those 2 PCs (specially the CoreM performance) and some other suggestions. Thanks in advance. EDIT: I can wait until September to buy the laptop, it's not necessary right NOW.

Ok so if im thinking off getting a second monitor for productivity and i got a question. Does the monitor have the same aspect ratio, resolution and physical size as the other monitor? Or can i pair a 1440p 27" with a 1080p 24"?

So ladies and gents, what do you think? http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/ncmwHx It is to be used for gaming at ideally 1080p high - ultra settings but also for a bit of productivity and also for capturing game footage with a teeny tiny bit of amateur video editing

I'm looking to buy a laptop to use for school, mostly for Office and media consumption. I don't need gaming performance since I have desktop for that. These are the features I'd like : 1080p IPS display with touch. Mini Display port 6/8 GB fast memory SSD or SSD/HDD 802.11ac and 1000base T (not absolute requirement) Numpad would be useful, but not very relevant. I saw the Asus ux303ln, but was wondering what the competition had to offer (don't like the colour much). All useful suggestions are welcome.

I have been using a single monitor for about a year now and it is excellent. The problem is that the single 1080p monitor just doesn't cut it anymore in terms of productivity and spending 600 dollars on 2 more of the same monitor would be too expensive. I have been looking for small displays to put beside my main vg248qe in portrait. It is not a standard setup, but I think it would be the best for my usage. By small, I mean between 15 - 21 inches diagonal. I don't care too much for resolution. I am mainly concerned about the price, I want to spend no more than 130 CAD per panel. I will not game on them, productivity only on the secondary monitors. I don't need 100% sRGB or anything crazy like that either. It is necessary to have the full range of rotation, as I want to run them in portrait on either side of my main display. TLDR: I need a small cheap panel (below 130 CAD) and I don't care about any specs like resolution (though more is better) and things like color accuracy are bottom priority. IPS would be nice but on the tight budget it is unrealistic.

I'm currently running dual 1080p monitors and have found that they take up quite a bit of room. Room that I don't really have when I'm living in my college dorm and so I've started thinking about a monitor "upgrade" to a single monitor. There are quite a few possible single monitor upgrade options: 2560x1080, 3440x1440, 2560x1440, and 3840x2160. Disclaimer: Everything below are opinions and conclusions based upon reading in forums and not personal experience. If you disagree with any of my statements, feel free to give your point of view as I'm sure I don't have everything right. 2560x1080 monitors are the most affordable resolution, but its really not much bigger than a standard 1920x1080 monitor. Also the monitors are usually quite small and not very tall. I've heard they are quite cool to play games on and are much harder to run than a 1080p. However, it doesn't seem like much of an upgrade productivity wise. I would consider 3440x1440 ultrawides as the best solution, but they are just so damn expensive (around $1000).... They are roughly the same width in pixels as dual 1080p monitors and are a bit taller. From what I can tell, this resolution would be the ideal single monitor upgrade due to the overall size being smaller than than an actual dual monitor setup yet having greater screen real estate. Scaling is supposedly much more friendly than a 4k monitor.Sadly, gaming would require a decent GPU setup which not everyone has. Also, there is no "gaming" model available as of this post and so some users would have to deal with screen tears and 60hz. 2560x1440 monitors would be a decent upgrade but would lead to a drop in screen real estate meaning it isn't that much of an upgrade productivity wise. It's not as physically large as an ultrawide being that the most common size is 27" compared to 34". They're quite a bit cheaper than an ultrawide with them costing $300+. Also, there are actually G-sync monitors out for this resolution unlike ultrawides. Finally there is 4k (3840x2160). Its the standard 16:9 aspect ration but it has more screen real estate than all the resolutions listed above. They also can be for around $400+ which is substantially cheaper than an ultrawide. The biggest issues that I've heard of are scaling, readability, and difficulty gaming at that resolution. What's your take on which setup would be best? I personally find 4k and 1440p ultrawides the best single monitor upgrade compared to dual 1080p. However, the sheer cost of 1440p ultrawides narrows it down to the 4k monitor. So if you were in my shoes, would you upgrade to 4k from dual 1080p? This thread is mainly a discussion of what would be the best single monitor upgrade from something like dual 1080p monitors. It's also for my own use of figuring out a more appropriate monitor for my situation

I currently have an Asus PB278Q and I'm looking for a second display to spread out my work on, maybe do some gaming. I'm stuck on deciding which one. For one thousand dollars, I can get the LG 34UM95(Amazon) For nine hundred dollars, I can get the Asus PB287Q(NCIX) Any advice, or links to better offers would be great! Thank you awesome people of the Linus Tech Tips forum! Postscript: I'm in Canada (BC) so anywhere I order from has to have reasonable shipping, etc. to here. Also, I want to be able to mount it on a stand.

Hi. I was looking to get windows 10 on this new rig I'm about to build. But. I'm only not sure about compatibility issues and as I'm not an expert on operating systems I might be overthinking this. The only thing holding me back right now is just compatibility, because other than that I'm 10/10 go for it. So, let's say modeling, video editing, photo editing, and coding in general + heavy gaming and light stuff like tf2 and a bit of csgo. Is it gonna cause that many problems to make it not viable at the moment or am I good to go? I was to install the build 10162 Thanks for your help and time
